PICKING UP THE AXE AT STUMPY'S

brotherssmokehousenj.com

Stumpy’s Hatchet House in Upper Saddle River had only been opened six months before the mandatory COVID closure. Switching off the party lights wasn't easy as business had just started picking up for owners Joyce Hayter, Bill Delia, and Michael Metzger. Re-opening in July to a different world meant that the Stumpy's team needed to take sanitization seriously. To disinfect, they invested in electrostatic sprayers which surround an entire area, rather than just spraying surfaces. Gone are the carefree days of big parties, but with their spacious, private, lounge-style "throwing pits," social distancing at Stumpy’s is much easier than at a restaurant or bar. Stumpy’s never combines groups; guests can bring their own food and beverages, and interaction with staff is minimal. The photo booth, ping pong, curling, and giant

Ralph & Staff at Sal Lauretta for Men

FROM MEETING WITH ZOOM TO DINING UNDER THE MOON DIANE VON FURSTENBERG SAID, “STYLE IS SOMETHING EACH OF US ALREADY HAS, ALL WE NEED TO DO IS FIND IT.” Well, the staff at Northwest Bergen Lifestyle has found some terrific styles from two distinctive local shops, and we are pleased to share our discoveries with you. Meet Kristin Dahl, owner of KD Boutique and Ralph Lauretta, general manager of Sal Lauretta. Both are located in Midland Park and offer personal service that far exceeds anything you’d find in a local department store. Our “Trend Setter” feature includes curated looks from both stores, along with a little insight from Kristin and Ralph on the upcoming trends for fall. Let’s find your style!

12

NorthwestBergen Lifestyle | September 2020

The tailors at Sal Lauretta have great custom tailoring right up their sleeves!

KD BOUTIQUE KD Boutique has the essence of one of those light and airy boutiques you would visit in Martha’s Vineyard or perhaps Hilton Head. Her styles exude that easy-going vibe in comfortable, wearable fabrics. Having a long history in the garment center of New York City, Kristin Dahl opened the doors of KD Boutique six years ago, after presenting home parties and pop-up shops throughout Bergen County. “Our manufacturers are switching gears because of COVID, and re-creating their fall lines, giving us unstructured comfort wear while incorporating the latest trends,” says Kristin. KD Boutique carries clothing that can be easily transformed…a t-shirt dress that’s perfect to run errands in can be topped by a great jacket or sweater for a home office Zoom call. Joggers, stretch denim, and vibrant pieces have been popular throughout the pandemic. “People want cheery, fresh colors. Bright tie-dye is a huge trend, she says.” Her vendors know what she’s looking for in her shop, and Kristin (and her customers) benefit from her long-term relationships with them. “I like to stock clothing lines that you won’t see anywhere else,” she says. “The shop’s look is focused on elevated, every day fashion--classic, chic, and stylish. I carry the clothes that you can wear all day—from your virtual meeting to outdoor evening dining!” SAL LAURETTA FOR MEN Growing up in Vittoria, Sicily, Sal Lauretta learned the art of men’s tailoring trade from his father, Raffaele. In 1962, Sal and Raffaele left Italy for America and brought with them their trade skills in European tailoring and style. The tradition thrived in the US as Sal and Raffaele opened their first store in 1974. Since then, Sal Lauretta for Men has become widely known as northern New Jersey’s premiere specialty menswear shop and tailor. The same techniques learned by Sal so many years ago continue to be evident in every piece of made-to-measure clothing created. Sal’s son Ralph is an integral part of the business as the general manager of the store. Ralph enjoys sharing style trends with his customers and strives to provide the friendly, “customer first” service that is lacking in many retail stores. Due to the pandemic, dressier men’s fashions and formalwear are less in favor at the moment. “Fall styles will have a more relaxed feel,” says Ralph. “There will be more loungewear and looks that will feel good to hang out in. Many men are working from home, so we are definitely moving toward a more casual focus this fall.” Keeping the inventory fresh and relevant, Ralph has requested more laidback fashions from his usual vendors and has sought out new manufacturers who are well known for casual wear. “We are swapping out the dressier looks for more informal styles and stocking plenty of looks that will be perfect for fall outdoor dining, such as outerwear and sports jackets in shades of brown, olive green, gray and navy. You can be comfortable and still look terrific.”

TREND SETTER IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT ALL OF US ARE READY TO MOVE ON TO A POST-PANDEMIC WAY OF LIFE. COVID has turned our dayto-day routines upside down--professionally, socially, and personally. Yes, things will be different moving forward, but I think we can all agree, it’s time to get dressed! The past six months have been surreal; a strange combination of dress-down Fridays crossed with Groundhog Day. Weeks have passed by as we sported nothing but sweatpants and pajamas. This was followed by the unlikely above-the-waist business attire look for those perpetual Zoom meetings. It’s time to find balance in our wardrobes again. KD Boutique and Sal Lauretta for Men have found

the magic combination of dressing for comfort while projecting an image of professionalism with an upbeat spirit. These will be the trends of 2020 and beyond as we move forward to reinvent ourselves.

OVER 40 YEARS. His creative interests were piqued as a student at Waldwick High School, where he made a point of fitting every art class possible into his schedule. Having had the privilege of working with three European masters over the years, Mike has gleaned an array of classic European techniques from their tutelage, and he now brings those exceptional talents to a new position at Danson Jewelers. Danson’s new and innovative store concept highlights Mike’s distinctive expertise. “People can come in and watch Mike at work,” says owner, Jack Nazy. “We wanted to be able to show customers that we’re different because we do everything here on site. We also wanted to cultivate an appreciation of the detail required with this type of work. 26

NorthwestBergen Lifestyle | September 2020

ARTICLE KRIS PEPPER PHOTOGRAPHY JEAN TERMAN This is something very unique to us. I don’t believe anyone else in Bergen County is doing this. Usually, custom work and repairs are sent out of the store. Now, we are able to do all of it here and the client can oversee the entire process.” The process itself is something to see. Mike first begins with drawings and a CAD design which is transformed into a wax model. The model is used to cast the metal, and every piece is completely hand-finished. Repairs are also completed on-site and Mike handles everything from tightening stones to sizing rings and repairing broken pieces. A state-of-the-art laser machine allows for special repairs that require welding near sensitive stones. The equipment is extremely target-specific and allows for repairs without having to remove the stone prior. “Many people bring in heirloom stones, to redesign them into something current and wearable,” says Mike. “One of the most popular redesigned styles right now is the halo ring. This design focus adds a “halo” of small diamonds around an original stone. The great thing about working with us to design your own custom piece is that we can customize both the look and the price point.” Marketing director Fiorella Landeo and several other employees have recently joined the Danson team from another local store, and all share the same high standards and sense of family. “Our customers recognize the sentimental story of their jewelry,” says Fiorella, who keeps the staff current on market trends in the business. “Families are proud to pass along fine jewelry to the younger folks when they get engaged, so they can transform those stones into a modern design that they can someday pass along themselves,” says Jack. “Real jewelry is meant to be seen across the room, and that’s what Mike creates--pieces with substance.” As we discuss Danson Jewelry’s future plans for expansion into Hackensack, Jack gives Mike a nod: “Look at him. A few minutes ago, he had a green piece of wax in his hand. Now it’s a ring!” dansonjewelers.com CityLifestyle.com/NorthwestBergen

HOW’S YOUR EYEWEAR FASHION IQ? Tracey Sinoway’s is off the charts! She and husband James, both optometrists, founded James Tracey Eye Care over 21 years ago with original locations in Wyckoff and Manhattan. Now, with additional offices in Woodcliff Lake and Midland Park, they have the expertise in eyecare and trending eyewear fashion to serve the discriminating Bergen community. In addition to providing exams and medical care, Tracey keeps her stock of eyewear on the cutting edge of style. “I buy the frames and meet frequently with sales reps so that we can offer all of the current looks. Our staff loves helping our customers find just the right frame for their faces--we want people to look good! I keep a lot of inventory on hand so that people can see and feel the frames and try them on. Our clients want that--they love good frames of high quality that will last.” James Tracey also features their own line of frames that offer best-selling looks in a budget-friendly version. The line is perfect for people who like to change their eyewear looks frequently or want a fun and trendy pair of readers. Throughout the pandemic, customers have been requesting blue light lenses. “We are seeing more people coming in with digital eye strain from working at home on their computers,” says Tracey. “It’s important to filter the UVA and UVB rays from screens to help decrease eye fatigue and strain. Preliminary studies are also indicating a possible increased risk of macular degeneration and interrupted sleep cycles due to it. If you feel like this may be an issue, a pair of blue light lenses to filter those rays are in order.” In addition to designer eye fashions, James Tracey also provides eye exams, medical eye care, and contact lenses. “We want people

+ EYEWEAR FASHION TIP 4: Translucent frames by Gucci (top) and Oliver Peoples in neutral colors have been on trend for at least a year and are still going strong this fall.Â

+ EYEWEAR FASHION TIP 3: These Prada frames are darker on the top and lighter at the bottom. They angle up to lift the face and the darker color draws more attention to the eyes.

LOOK UP The things that are closest to the camera lens are the largest in the image. Holding the camera slightly above you is a great way to place the focus on your eyes and smile. Speaking of eyes, while you can look directly into the camera, looking off-camera can produce a more natural feeling.
