Their dedicated professional staff is committed to using equine therapy to transform the lives of their riders. Riding a horse provides a multi-dimensional movement pattern similar to the human gait. This motion influences the rider’s body, leading to increased flexibility, core strength, fine motor skills, and intellectual functioning. ManeGait

was established in 2007. ManeGait’s founding family includes community leaders Bill and Priscilla Darling and their daughter and son-in-law, Landon and Zach Schneider. Bill and his brothers were original founders of Darling Homes where Bill served as President for 25 years. Bill and Zach recently launched Tradition Homes, a McKinneybased home building company. Located on 14 beautiful acres in Collin County, ManeGait is the developer and practitioner of the GaitWay to the Brain Program. The first program of its kind, GaitWay integrates brain-building exercises into the framework of equine therapy. The program is supported by neurological research that documents the impact of brain-building activities on individuals with physical, cognitive, sensory, and behavioral disabilities. The program was studied by 12

Texas Women’s University in 2015-17. Study results confirmed the benefits of this program reporting improvements in participant motor skills, communication, vision, focus, and many more cognitive attributes. In addition to their excellent results-proven programming, ManeGait creates a welcoming, family-like atmosphere for students, volunteers, and staff. The weekly riding time promotes close connections between rider, trainer, and horse alike. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, ManeGait was shut down from March through most of May. The week of May 26, they reopened welcoming their riders and volunteers back for weekly lessons. In response to COVID-19, ManeGait is taking every precaution in modifying their programs to help ensure the safety and health of returning riders. ManeGait currently has 200 people on their waitlist. With the cancellation of fund-raising events this spring due to COVID-19, they need help in the form of donations and volunteers. There are several ways to donate, including monetary donation, event sponsorship, and becoming a ManeGait Champion. There are also several ways to volunteer, and part of the volunteer training can now be completed online. As a result, her inventory is reasonably priced to suit the budget of her shoppers. I know first hand as I wasn’t able to leave the store without picking up a few things for myself and friends! Dawn prides her stores with helping her customers to find clothing and accessories that they will feel good about wearing. She wants everyone to look sharp and feel confident when wearing anything from her boutique. Brand names you can find at Distinctively Hers include P.J. Salvage, She + Sky, Vintage Havana, Naked Zebra, and Volatile. Her accessory lines include Alex & Ani and the local artisan Julio. In addition to clothing and accessories, gift lines include key chains, insulated tumblers, Paddy Wax candles, and the Oprah and Rachael Ray recommended Warmies, and much more. She also offers gift cards in any denomination. As an added thank you to her customers, free gift wrap is available year-round as well as a special $10 off during your birthday month. An additional store perk includes a rewards program whereby every time you spend $200, you get $10 back. New inventory arrives at the store weekly, so you won’t see the same thing twice. Dawn visits the Dallas Market 5 times a year and the Magic market in Las Vegas once a year to ensure she has the latest styles and trends available for her customers. When asked what’s trending for spring and summer 2020, Dawn told me it’s color and lots of it. Throwback to the 80s, clothing and jewelry alike will boast bright hues with a mix of beads, metals, and acrylics in the jewelry designs. While Dawn’s boutiques have been successful, she hasn’t always been in the retail industry. Formerly a Madison, Wisconsin resident for 28 years, Dawn began her career in the insurance claims industry, before transitioning into Human Resources for several years. Then one day, inspired by a good friend and boutique owner, Dawn decided she was through with corporate America and opened her own store after moving to the north Collin county area 15 years ago. If running two boutiques weren’t enough, Dawn reinvented herself once again by training and competing in AAU powerlifting contests. Challenged by her fitness trainer and encouraged by her husband, Dawn began competing at age 41 proving that age is just a numOwner Dawn Wermuth

As she relates, “I was giving him a hard time about not being able to get any women to do competitive weight lifting. A week later, I came back and he asked if I had decided whether or not I would do it. He said he thought I would be good at it.” Dawn was hesitant to participate at first, thinking she wouldn’t have the time to dedicate to the sport in addition to running her own business. Her trainer explained that she would not need to work out more, just differently, so she gave it a try. Dawn has won over 30 national and international records in the sport. She will start training soon for her next event which will take place this summer in Las Vegas. When not at the store or in the gym training, you can find Dawn spending time with her husband and 4 rescue fur baby dogs ages 5-15 years old. She and her husband are very involved with nonprofit organizations that support rescue animals. The McKinney Distinctively Hers location can be found just off the downtown square at 110 W Virginia Street, McKinney. Store hours are Wednesday-Friday 10-5, Saturday 10-6, and Sundays 12-5. The Joy of Living a Meaningful Life HOW TO FIND MEANING AND OVERCOME ROAD BLOCKS

ARTICLE KIMBERLY BLAKER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

“IT IS NOT THE YEARS IN YOUR LIFE BUT THE LIFE IN YOUR YEARS THAT COUNTS.” - Adlai Stevenson The point Stevenson illustrates is a reminder of how it’s easy to lose sight of living a meaningful life. It’s an interesting phenomenon the amount of time, energy, and money we invest in living healthier, longer, and happier lives. Yet, we often still feel unsatisfied and that our lives are devoid of meaning. When it comes to living a meaningful life, there’s no one size fits all solution. What makes life meaningful is unique to each and every person. So to find meaning, you may need to do some exploration to discover what speaks to you. Meaning can come from many different avenues. Unlike happiness, which stems from receiving or doing things for yourself, meaning comes from giving or doing for others. Perhaps for you, it comes from fostering a close family relationship. For some, it’s about choosing a fulfilling career path that involves helping others through teaching, nursing, counseling, or coaching. Others find meaning by giving back to their community by joining the Kiwanis or volunteering as a Big Brother or Big Sister. Purpose can

FAITH REFLECTIONS (CONTINUED) John's Book

John is passionate about the role gratitude has played in his recovery. As a part of his counseling, John was encouraged to keep a gratitude journal, which he still continues today. He says that the practice of gratitude has been life-changing. Instead of focusing on the negative things in life, gratitude journaling has enabled him to focus on the positive things that feed his future goals. John attributes the importance of his faith in his healing process as well. When he gave up control and let God direct him putting him where he needed to be, he started to be happier. He found he could stop stressing about the things he couldn’t control. When asked if he would write more books, John says yes! He and his wife talk about it regularly and have even tossed around the idea of writing a children’s book together. John would like to use his book as a speaking platform to work with others who have suffered failure and disappointment. He wants to inspire them to change the narrative of their lives and give them hope for the future. John’s wife, Shannon Patterson, is a broker for Coldwell Realty Apex. Shannon is ranked in the top 6 agents of 900 in the company. Shannon has such great relationships with her clients that she becomes their family’s go-to Realtor. John doesn’t watch baseball much anymore except for the World Series. Instead, he enjoys playing golf as a hobby, traveling with his family, and coaching lessons on pitching to area youth. In addition to all of that, John has also started an investment firm called Orange Tree Capital Investments company. Learn more about John and purchase an autographed copy of his book at Perspectiveagent.com. You can find Shannon at www.shannonpattersonrealty.com. 28
