LOCAL PARADE BACK AFTER 55 YEAR HIATUS

get ready for eden prairie’s

schooner days parade! 76 TROMBONES LEADING THE BIG PARADE? No but there will be marching bands. After a 55-year hiatus, Eden Prairie will again have a parade this year on Saturday, May 30th. department. Â A small procession of units, including two Connaughty girls representing the graduating class of 1982, moved down the highway. The viewers were enthusiastic, if sparse. What brought the local parade back to life? The simple answer is years of persistence by Curt Connaughty and the support of Mayor Ron Case. These two, and especially Curt, were the cheerleaders for organizing another parade.

ARTICLE RICK JENSEN

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | April 2020

Curt came to Eden Prairie in the 1950’s to accept a teaching position. He’s been active in the community ever since. He was the high school’s first football coach, he coached track and he became a principal at the high school. Since he retired a few years back, he remains active in the sports scene by being a timekeeper at football games and a starter for track meets. But why an interest in parades? One clue is that he and his wife Mary have attended the Bayport Memorial Day parade for over sixty years. Another is the twinkle in his eye when he talks about parades. Spry and active at age 88, there is a skip in his gait just thinking about the parade. He enjoys the hard work it’s taken, and will take, to put on the parade. But he is especially proud of the opportunity to bring many facets of our diverse community together to put on and to celebrate a parade. Connaughty found a fellow parade lover in Mayor Ron Case. The two of them conspired and cajoled the City to approve, and the Eden Prairie Lions Club to take on the formidable task of organizing a parade. Curt heads the committee that has been working hard since last October to make this event a success. They got a bit lucky finding Lion Club President Gary Watkins with an interest for and an understanding of parades. Gary through his business has been active and with the Osseo Lions ROAR parade for many years. His knowledge base has been a great help with the task of defining actions needed, approvals required, and helping ensure the commitment of the Lions Club. Curt, Mayor Ron and Gary have all worked on the committee that has been working hard for months to bring a parade to our community.

healthy, natural healing EXPLORE THE NATURAL HEALING PRACTICES OF ACUPUNCTURE AND CUPPING

INSPIRED BY OUR JANUARY ISSUE ON EXERCISE, I SIGNED UP FOR BOXING CLASSES TO KICKSTART THE YEAR. The fitness benefits are great, but muscle aches and tension quickly caught up with me. If elite sports performers use acupuncture and cupping as an alternative to pain relivers, I wondered if it might work for me as well. I turned to Sarah Elliott at Elliott Therapeutics. Sarah is a Licensed Acupuncturist with the Minnesota Board of Medical Practices and is certified in both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. I asked Sarah how acupuncture and cupping works. “When you get a papercut, the brain recognizes the injury and will send antibodies to heal the cut and in a few days it heals completely. Acupuncture works on the same principle. By creating a micro tear in the skin, the body will send antibodies to the area to help it heal.” Sarah explained. “Cupping works on the same principle, by lifting the skin away from the muscle, it signals the body to send blood into the muscles to help it heal.”

ARTICLE INGERID MOHN 16

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | April 2020

If you have a fear of needles like me, don’t worry. “An acupuncture needle is about the width of a cat’s whisker and you will probably feel it going in, but the pain is minimal”, explained Sarah. After swabbing the areas to be treated with alcohol, Sarah inserted the needles. I quickly realized that I barely felt the needles go in. Sarah placed needles in my neck, along my spine, ankles, hands and ears. Once the needles were in, she placed a bell in my hand to ring if I got uncomfortable. Sarah let me relax for about 20 minutes. During that time, I was aware of a comfortable zinging and warming sensation between the acupuncture needles. It was cool to listen to my body going through the healing process. After acupuncture, we moved on to cupping. Cupping is different than massage in that it lifts the facia, the connective tissue of the muscle, allowing blood to flow in to remove inflammation. Massage, on the other hand, is a downward pressure. Cupping and massage have similar benefits that it creates blood flow to the muscles. Elliott therapeutics is the only clinic in Eden Prairie using fire cupping. Fire cupping is when a flammable substance is inserted and removed from a glass cup then the cup is placed upside down on the skin. As the air inside the cup cools, it will create suction, lifting the skin away from the muscle. I expected the cup to be warm, hot even, but it was cool to the touch. Sarah let the cups sit for a few minutes before moving them around on my back. As I dressed, I took inventory of my body; the pain in my shoulder and upper back had lessened. Most of all, I felt centered and relaxed. I know that one session will not reverse the abuse I put my body through every week. Sarah even cautions that acupuncture or cupping are not a one and done approach, but can be a healthy addition to a natural lifestyle. If you want to check out acupuncture and/or cupping at Elliott Therapeutics, visit www.elliottacu.com or call 952-277-9975. Elliott Therapeutics is located at 8937 Aztec Drive in Eden Prairie. FAQ about cupping and acupuncture HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK? It kickstarts the body’s natural healing ability by stimulating the autonomic nervous system to produce chemicals that reduce inflammation, encourages blood flow and releases endorphins and calms the brain. WHAT ARE BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE? Acupuncture can help you relax, sleep better, have more energy, reduce muscle pain, lessen headaches, improve mood, improve digestion, balance hormones, improve skin and more. HOW DOES CUPPING WORK? Cupping is the use of suction to pull the skin and facia away from the muscle to release tight muscles and increase blood flow into the muscles.

WHAT ARE BENEFITS OF CUPPING? It is mostly used for musculoskeletal conditions such as tight muscles, tension in the back and neck and to reduce chronic headaches. It can also improve the overall sense of wellbeing.

ENJOY THE PRISTINE BEAUTY OF ARUBA AND FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOUR TRIP ARTICLE MIKE MOHN

IN SIMPLE TERMS, ECO-TOURISM MEANS TRAVELING TO AREAS THAT CONSERVE THE ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAIN THE WELL-BEING OF LOCAL PEOPLE. Ecotourists often visit fragile, pristine and relatively undisturbed natural areas, leaving the smallest footprint possible. Staying in places that use ecologically sounds practices, such as solar heating or cooling and recycling water or waste goods, ecotourists often purchase goods and services from locals or that benefit the local economy. As Ecotourism becomes more popular, more options are available. Aruba is a perfect example of an eco-friendly destination. The island is blessed with natural beauty and the appeal to tourists is easily understood. To keep the island pristine, government and residents take great care to encourage sustainable practices that will keep the island beautiful long into the future. Read on to

+ ECO-OASI S

learn some of the things Aruba does to protect its beauty.

Aruba is 70 square miles of happiness. Helping to keep it that way, the government promotes the use of renewable energy. Solar and wind are the most important sources of renewable energy. The potential for natural, renewable energy is enormous as Aruba has more than 5,000 wind and 2,500 solar hours available annually. These natural resources make Aruba’s renewable energy clean energy. The Vader Piet wind farm generates 17 percent of the island’s electricity needs. A large solar park at the airport provides electricity to some of the island’s residents through clean solar power. Because of its ability to generate clean energy, Aruba has offered the island as a testing hub for other countries renewable and sustainable solution.

20

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | April 2020

+PLAST ICS BA N Aruba has some of the most beautiful, pristine beaches in the world. The island’s number one commodity is its natural beauty and pristine environment, particularly it’s beach areas. On a small island like Aruba, the need to reduce waste is magnified. Waste from single-use plastics is a major problem. The need for a global effort to move away from single-use plastics is more visible on an island the size of Aruba, where even a small amount of waste becomes a glaring problem. While the economic costs of waste disposal are important, the environmental cost from an excess of plastic waste in such a small space makes this a crucial issue. To combat the problem, in 2017, Aruba’s government banned the use of single-use plastic bags anywhere on the island. The ban is strictly enforced, particularly in beach areas, where plastic not properly disposed of can end up in the fragile costal ecosystems surrounding the island. Roughly three quarters of the island’s retailers were in compliance with the ban as of late 2019. The success of the ban on plastic bags has emboldened Aruba’s Ministry of Environment to announce a milestone initiative that would ban all single use plastic in 2020. The banned items will include plastic cups and straws, utensils, styrofoam boxes and similar items - basically all disposable plastic that is commonly used to consume food and beverages will be banned from the island. Plastic water bottles or commodities pre-packaged in plastic that are imported into Aruba are not banned. Initial efforts to enforce the large-scale ban show strong local support and the effort is proving popular with the island’s visitors. As a result of the ban, regular visitors to the Caribbean report that Aruba is much cleaner than other destinations in the region.

TRAVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)

Tourists should appreciate the efforts by the locals to do their share to follow eco-friendly practices. For instance, tariffs on using electricity from the wind and solar projects have been lowered to encourage adoption of clean-energy equipment, with many residents feeding energy back into the grid. Islanders are employing a wide variety of sustainable practices. For instance, reverse-osmosis water purification systems are being widely adopted, which require far less energy. Residents and local waste haulers collaborate in annual beach cleanings where hundreds or thousands of volunteers – including tourists – join in. Recycling is regularly practiced and up to 50% of all trash is sorted and shipped for recycling. A biogas plant processes all organic refuse. In a broader effort, Aruba’s government has declared a goal to be oil-independent. International organizations have pledged to help, using Aruba as a test location. A Dutch energy think tank recently set up an experimental community, comparing 15 homes that will rely solely on renewable energy sources to 15 homes that do not, allowing for a comparative analysis. The focus of these international and local efforts is on improving current and harnessing new means of energy generation, along with providing education to change wasteful habits. One sign that residents are hearing the message is the prevalence of electric cars on the island. Some condo sales, for instance, include an electric or hybrid car as part of the deal. Aruba’s main power distributor is actively working to promote solar energy structures to homes that will allow residents to charge electric cars using solar power. Tariffs on electric cars have been reduced from 40% (Levied on conventional vehicles) to just 2% for electric cars. Locals are practicing what they preach. For tourists seeking an eco-friendly vacation experience, Aruba should be near the top of your list.

If you have traveled over the last few years, you have probably noticed a sign in your shower that reads something like, “Help Save Our Planet – Millions of gallons of water are used everyday to wash towels that have only been used once. Help reduce this waste. A hanging towel means you will use it again; a towel on the floor means please wash. Thank you for helping us conserve the Earths vital resources.” You may have cheered the hotel for encouraging energy saving practices, but you might be surprised to learn other ways that hotels are doing their part to be eco-friendly. As a good business practice, many hotels in Aruba actively work to decrease energy and water consumption. Adopting energy efficiency measures makes good sense, both financially to keep rates down but also to serve as good environmental stewards of the island. Examples of energy efficient techniques some of the hotels are practicing include using solar power for hot water systems and air conditioning. Recycling measures are being widely practiced and some hotels are experimenting with filtering water run-off to reduce waste water. Older style light bulbs are being replaced with more efficient light bulbs. Timers and occupancy sensors on bathroom exhaust fans and room lighting are reducing electricity usage. To know if your hotel is practicing sound practices that are eco-friendly, look for the EarthCheck seal, LEED, and Green Globe platinum certifications. Of the 85 hotels in the Caribbean award the EarthCheck seal, 10% are located in Aruba.

RESPONSIBLE SPRING CLEAN UP

EARTH FRIENDLY DECLUTTERING TIPS

ARTICLE MIKE MOHN

A PILE OF JUNK STARTS INNOCENTLY ENOUGH – YOU DESIGNATE SPACE IN A SPARE BEDROOM, THAT CRAWL SPACE IN THE BASEMENT OR MAYBE THE GARAGE TO STORE YOUR SELDOM-USED ITEMS. Soon, mixed in with the seasonal decorations, extra furniture that you no longer use, and unwanted gifts are the things that you just don’t know what to do with. Overtime, your storage space became a dumping ground. If your own a home, you know what I’m talking about. To give you a chance to take back your extra space (And for others, to avoid ending up on an episode of the TV show “Hoarders”), we’re giving you a firm plan for cleaning out your junk. Ed Forgerty at Junk King say, “Spring is the busiest time of year for us. Clearing out a mess is a simple process once you make the decision to start.”

5 TIPS FOR DECLUTTERING

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

BE COMMITTED: Cleaning out the junk will have to be done, either by you now or someone else later. Commit to getting your space back. HAVE A PLAN: Decide whether you will keep, throw or donate your items. Only keep items you will use immediately. The Prop Shop accepts most donations (Please be useable). HAVE SUPPLIES READY: Make sure you have bags or boxes for your items. Markers and tape are helpful as are cleaning supplies for when the job is done. BE RUTHLESS: If you haven’t used an item in over a year, then you likely won’t use the item in the future. Throw it or donate - no exceptions. START! A journey of a 1000 miles starts with a single step. Mark your calendar and work in short segments. You can do the job in multiple sessions. CONTINUED >

THE PROP SHOP accepts donations of clothes, furniture, bedding and kitchenware (Cookware and utensils). Your donations help over 750 active families that depend on Prop to give them a hand up. Please donate useable items only. JUNK KING can help you move most anything, including large pieces of furniture, appliances, old hot tubs, mattresses, construction waste, etc., Junk King will donate useable items where appropriate and recycles waste materials where disposal is required. WHAT’S HOLDING YOU BACK? You know the plan to follow, where to donate and how to dispose of items you can’t move yourself. Recognize that decluttering does more than just give you space back in your living space – by repurposing items you minimize waste in landfills and reduce the need to produce more consumer goods. Help yourself by decluttering – and the environment.
