Great Awakening Brewing Company DO YOU REMEMBER BIG ADVENTURES AT THE MILL IN WESTFIELD? For those with school-aged kids, you likely spent many birthday parties there over the years! If you were to visit the location now, you would never recognize it. Westfield’s newest craft brewery, Great Awakening Brewing Company, is the current occupant. The expansive space features gorgeous refinished wood surfaces, a loft-style ceiling, and a wall of windows bringing in natural light and lending a stunning view. Owners and Westfield natives Mark and Christine Netzer and Andy and Kim Grenier decided on the Mill because they loved the location and they wanted to begin their business journey in Westfield. Mark states, “We are invested in the growth of our community, and craft breweries can be a catalyst to continue that growth.” The concept for GABC all started when Mark embarked on a brewing hobby about 7 years ago. He brewed at home, perfecting his beers, and then decided to enter into local festivals and competitions. . .and he won! People would ask him where they could buy the beer, and the idea to start a company was born. Mark and Andy have known each other since high school. Andy, an entrepreneur at heart, was pursuing a career in corporate America. Mark approached him and pitched the idea to start a brewing company - Andy was all-in! The Great Awakening name originated from the idea to “be awakened” to the diversity of craft beer. As Mark says, “we’re more than meets the eye.” With over 85 recipes and growing, GABC embraces this mission and provides unique beer offerings every week. Mark shares, “We will not mass produce our beers, every batch is different.” Their logo was created by Edgardo Sanchez from San-Man Graphics. If you look closely at the “eye” within the logo, you will see the “G” and the “A” are interwoven within the design. GABC began sales in July by fulfilling curbside pickup orders via their online website greatawakeningbrewing.com. When asked what each of their favorite beers are, Andy quickly states “The Purist Black Currant & Vanilla, in our Sour Blonde Ale series, is my favorite yet.” Mark, on the other hand, was less decisive. “They’re like my children - I can’t pick just one!” Join us in some “socially distant” fun when the taproom and kitchen open this fall. Future plans include live music and a private event space. CityLifestyle.com/Westfield

TREND SETTER ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY DANIELLE BARTON
Let's Gather TABLE SETTING INSPIRATION AHH. . .THE DINING ROOM. The most adult room in the house. And most likely the most underused room, as well. In my house, it is periodically used as a resting room for items that are not yet put away, but happily out of sight. Now, for me, a dining room was a must-have when searching for our forever house. The small cape from which we moved had a small dining space shared with the kitchen. So, now that I have my very own, it’s time to Gather!!! Over the years, I have built up a beautiful collection of dinnerware, glassware, linens, serving platters & bowls. Most of my pieces are white, so they match with all special occasions and holidays. I do have some antique hand me downs that I love to use along with more everyday pieces. The holidays are closely upon us and I just love setting a special table for my friends and family. If there is one thing that 2020 has taught me, it’s not the “places” that I’ve missed, it’s the people! Let’s celebrate in style! Below are some ideas for creating your own table settings.
1
Table Setting Basics Mix and match stemware. When using red and white wine glasses mix up stem and stemless glasses and use pieces from different sets. Always use cloth napkins. They can be placed either to the left of the plate or on top of the plate. Add fresh flowers to the centerpiece. I used plants from my garden here. But even in winter, you can find interesting evergreen branches, twigs, and berries outside for a seasonal centerpiece. Bring in the color! I like to keep my plates white, then add the seasonal colors around them. This pop of color can be found in the centerpiece, a colorful napkin, or even a table cloth. Candles add ambiance! I like to use different length candles - from tapers to tea lights. Just make sure they are unscented so they don't overpower your delicious meal!

WHEN DID YOU OPEN KETTLEBREAD DELI? We have been in this space renovating for about a year. We officially opened for online ordering on May 11, 2020. On the first day we sold out in three hours! WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO OPEN? This idea has been in the works since 2015. The three of us have worked together in different capacities over the years, and we accumulated the recipes over that time. We decided on Southwick because the community has seen tremendous growth, and the residents and town are very supportive of that growth. WHAT DOES KETTLEBREAD DELI OFFER? We offer gourmet sandwiches in a dine-in/take-out experience for lunch and dinner. Our sandwich menu features such items as spicy ahi tuna, lobster grilled cheese, and peppercorn roast beef asiago. We provide a boxed lunch that our customers love, and we have seen great success with our Loyalty Card program. We cater upon request, and we are looking to offer holiday platters, as well. TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR BREAD! Our Kettlebread is special. It’s baked daily, and it captures the essence of both ciabatta and sourdough. WHAT OTHER BACK-OF-THE-HOUSE POSITIONS HAVE YOU PREVIOUSLY HELD? I did everything from washing dishes at Davios in Westfield, to Executive Chef at Jacob Wirth’s in Boston. I also worked for some private country clubs and hotels.
WHERE CAN WE FIND YOU WHEN YOU ARE NOT IN THE KITCHEN? I don’t take much time for myself yet. But I like riding my bike on the rail trail and going to Crossfit classes 4-5 times a week.

WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR PASSION FOR COOKING? My grandfather really enjoyed food and cooking. G A L AC T I C GOURD

Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!
+
Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!
+
You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.

Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combina-

Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!

A CHOCOLATE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY ARTICLE JENNIFER GIFFUNE, R.D.,L.D.N.
SINKING YOUR TEETH INTO CHOCOLATE, MAY BE AN OUT OF BODY EXPERIENCE. But soon after, you think, “I blew my diet.” Did you ever think of chocolate as medicine? Eating chocolate daily may just be the prescription you need to prevent and/or treat heart disease. Native Americans used chocolate for the treatment of hundreds of diseases, turning cocoa beans into a bitter chocolate drink. Today, scientists have found that dark chocolate can help your heart.
