WITH LOVE ON THE BRAIN, THE DESIRE TO WOO YOUR SWEETHEART COMES NATURALLY. While a night on the town is certainly nice, an intentional evening at home can be just as romantic and twice as impressive. Here’s a lesson by Landrum’s Florist & Interior Design and Chef Greg Mueller of REC TEC Grills on creating the perfect ambiance and the perfect steak, whether it’s Valentine’s Day or a Tuesday. When asked for her top three tips on creating a romantic setting, Charmagne Landrum, owner of Landrum’s Florist & Interior Design, didn’t miss a beat. “Always have fresh flowers - a bouquet or rose petals - on the table, and candlelight is a must! Nothing brings out romance more,” she notes. Her third charm is fine china. “Set the table with your best tablecloth and serve it on your own china.” We recommend serving a favorite dish, so here’s a lesson on a classic.

the perfect steak Method 01 Select Prime USDA Filet Mignon, Ribeye, or NY Strip Steak. 02 Thirty minutes before grilling,  preheat grill to  500°F  and set steak out  to bring to room temperature. 03 Rub  each steak with  olive oil and a few shakes of favorite seasonings, layering salty, sweet, sour, and umami elements. 04 Sear sides of steak on 500°F grill for 4-5 minutes each, rotating steak 90° to give it a diamond pattern. 05 Remove steak when it reaches an internal temperature of 133°F. 06 Let it rest for 5 minutes, allowing the protein to relax. This yields a medium-rare steak. 07 Top it off with garlic herb butter. Pair with their favorite sides and wine. CONTINUED >

INSPIRED BY

SH ADES OF H O PE

TWENTY YEARS AGO, AN ELECTRICAL ACCIDENT SENT EMMANUEL MARTINEZ TO THE DOCTORS HOSPITAL BURN UNIT. He ended up losing both legs, his right arm, and a finger on his left hand. Although life as he knew it was over, a new life and new friendships were being forged. “You never know what God has for you,” says Emmanuel. “He has a

purpose. At that time, you don’t see it, but later on, you understand the purpose. Without this, I would have never met Dean.” When he moved to the 6th floor, Emmanuel met Dean Beasley, then Director of the Inpatient Rehab.  “Emmanuel is probably my most memorable patient,” says Dean. “During his rehabilitation, they had been talking on the unit about him writing, painting, or drawing. For some reason, that clicked.”  Dean remembered a movie he’d seen about quadriplegic Joni Eareckson Tada. “I did everything I could do to find that video,” Dean adds. “He was inspired by it, so we bought whatever we needed to make it work.” “She was painting with her mouth, and it was beautiful,” explains Emmanuel. “I thought, if she can do that with her mouth, I still have one hand – why can’t I do that too? So, I started with charcoal drawings, then acrylics, then a little bit with the oil.” Dean adds, “Once he got out of rehab, he enrolled for lessons at the Gertrude Herbert Institute. That’s when he got really good.” “They showed me the techniques,” Emmanuel explains. “I also went to local stores  to learn more about mixing colors. After that, I

watched Bob Ross’s videos because I like his technique. I’d watch his videos and pause it to paint.” In appreciation of Dean’s influence in his life, Emmanuel gave Dean a special painting for his retirement in 2018.

ARTICLE MICHELLE W. PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY RANDY PACE

“I’m very thankful for everything Dean did,” says Emmanuel. “Since he was retiring, I painted him a seagull. A seagull has freedom on the air and on the sea. I know he loved his job, but sometimes you need a break and time to relax with family.” Emmanuel’s paintings and his life serve as an inspiration to others. He often returns to the rehab unit to meet and encourage patients who have undergone severe trauma.  You can find Emmanuel’s art at his website, EmmanuelMartinezArt.com, and around the Doctors Hospital Rehab Unit.

“I guess it’s always been in the back of my head to teach,” says Randy. “When I was at Lander, I was asked to teach a photography session for kids at a juvenile detention center. They were all there for different reasons, but I saw it change them to work with photography. It was fun for them; they could express themselves with photography. It was also fun for me to teach.” Since 2012, Randy has been a Lecturer of Art Photography at Augusta University. He teaches all levels of photography for majors and non-majors, including art appreciation, 2-d design, and sequential levels of photography. “It’s is a tough medium to teach because it’s wrapped up in creativity and technical things like lenses, apertures, and shutter speeds,” says Randy. “Photography is 98% vision or concept….not seeing with your eyes, but with your head and your heart. So, I push my students to go beyond what something looks like and explain that how you feel about something is more important. It’s a creative outlet in itself. I feel like I learn just as much from students as they learn from me.”

One of the things Randy brought with him from his time in New York is street photography. “I do a lot of portraits of people on the street. Some are strangers, some are friends of friends. When I started, it was pretty black and white, and I didn’t use much color. But over the years, I’ve started to do some color images and worked that into the series.” His years of street photography have been compiled into a gallery called A Look at the American South.  You can find the portrait gallery for this and other projects at Randy’s website, RandyPacePhotography.com. LIVE EDGE

CRAFTING PIECES WITHOUT THE DISCONNECT AND WITH ALL OF THE CHARACTER

“EVERYTHING I DO IS CUSTOM FROM START TO FINISH. There’s nothing that’s ordinary,” says Josh Heyns, owner of Vahalla Custom Creations. “I use the term  ‘custom creations’ because I’m more than a table maker or cabinet guy; I like to live outside the box.” A visit to two local businesses provides a window into Josh’s creativity and versatility. From the long oak benches, pecan bar tops, drive thru menu, and tables with custom-made metal legs at Rooted Coffeehouse, to the hand washing station with a  custom welded frame, reclaimed poplar wood bar top, and wall art at Augusta Candle Company, each piece is distinct and designed to fit the vision of the client.  Josh also has residential clients who call on him to bring special, one-of-a-kind touches to their homes. “I want to speak to people’s creative side,” he explains. Clients give him a rough idea of what they want, and he uses their idea to create a vision for the piece.  Work begins for Josh when the wood is still in its natural state. “I like to salvage the tree myself,” Josh says. “Sometimes I use my wench to drag logs onto the trailer. Then I take them to a friend in Edgefield who has a saw mill. He cuts them, and I let them air dry anywhere from 3 months to 2 years. Then, I can throw them into a kiln to finishing drying them. After that, the wood is ready to start the process of becoming a custom creation.”  “I seek out more of the exotic wood,” Josh shares.  “I’ve done mantels and used everything from pine to red oak to red cedar. Red cedar is my favorite. It’s very rich in color and has a cool grain with swirls in it. Paired with a textured edge of the white/tan sap wood, it looks very funky.” “I’ve used pecan for cutting boards, side tables, and a coffee table,” says Josh. “In pecan, the spalted wood can leave really fine ARTICLE MICHELLE W. Another unique project included turning an old upright piano into a serving bar for a client. “I started by tearing it down to the bare wood,” says Josh. “I put glass over the keys and put a live edge red oak slab on top to rest drinks.

Under the red oak slab, I installed a place to hang wine glasses, and above the keys, there is a shelf to mix drinks on. I mounted the foot pedals on the edge of the top slab to use as towel racks. Beneath, where the foot pedals were, I made a shelf that can double as a wine rack.” Along with creating pieces so unique they seem alive, supporting those in need is deeply important to Josh.
