beauty that is Autumn in Idaho. As Stanley Horowitz once said, "Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all." While we still need to wait until October to enjoy the peak of fall colors, don’t give up on summer yet; there is still time to discover some of Idaho’s great lakes this month, and Roger Phillips highlights five of them in this issue. As our nights begin to cool off and we get ready to swap out our summer shorts for something a bit more cozy, we explore some great fashion trends and ideas to kick off the fall season in style. Enjoy the best of what our beautiful state provides, and from our hearts to yours, we wish you the very best this September.

LOCAL NONPROFITS GET BOOST FROM AIRPORT PASSENGERS

Boise Airport travelers with spare change have long known the challenge of dumping their coins in the X-ray machine dish and then trying to scrape them all back out again. Recently, however, those going through security have had the option to give their change to three local nonprofits. Over the past year, those nickels, dimes, quarters and pennies have added up to more than $5,000. “Kindness is a very real part of our cultural fabric here in Boise,” Mayor David Bieter says in a release. “The money donated at the collection stations is one of the many ways our community shows kindness and support for one another.” Neighbors

NEW BOISE PARK DEDICATED Boise added another park to its collection at the end of May. Mariposa Park, on the corner of Mitchell and Irving Streets, offers plenty of pathways, green spaces, a pond and a fenced dog park. The park’s new name was chosen from entries submitted by students who attend the city’s school-based community centers. The winning entry, chosen from among 89 names, belonged to Whitney Elementary School fourth-grade student Riley

COMPOST SITE OPENS IN WEST BOISE Need some compost? In Boise, you now have two options. The city recently opened a compost pickup location at 12142 W. Joplin Road. It joins the existing location at the Idaho Botanical Garden. If you’re a Boise residential compost customer, you’re entitled to two yards of compost a year (which is roughly enough to fill a pickup truck bed). Make sure to bring a shovel when visiting the self-serve locations. According to the City of Boise, since the 2017 launch of curbside composting, more than 50,000 tons of compostable material have been collected from the 73,000plus customers that participate. That collected material is taken to the 20 Mile South Composting Facility. Throughout 90-120 days, the material is processed until it

The finished compost is then available to Boise residential compost customers. The compost is also used for city green spaces like parks and golf courses, as well as sold wholesale (with the revenue invested back into the program to help offset costs). With youth on your side, you don’t need much more than a classic look. You can also push style boundaries to the limits—like pairing a Louis Vuitton handbag with knock-off shoes from Target! Don’t worry about being too serious. If anyone can get away with it, it’s you.

MEN Who doesn’t love a good flannel shirt? Flannel is often overlooked as an essential staple in any male wardrobe. It can easily transition from a young man in his 20s to a man in his 50s and still make the man look put-together and stylish, no matter the age.
#1
20s
The 20s for men is the sweet spot. Because it’s a demographic that’s catered to by fashion, you have a good variety to choose from to find your style. Use this time to do just that.
#2
30s In your 30s, it’s time to leave the boy behind and invest in important pieces that the man you’ve become is going to be comfortable in. Your style may change a little more from what it was before, but don’t overdo it. Find a little edge you can add.
#3
50-Plus Just because you may be a grandpa does not mean you have to dress that way. Style doesn’t have to change too much from when you’re in your 30s and 40s to now. Just make sure your uniform makes you confident, comfortable and on-point.

FAIRIES AND FORMALS MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE
ONCE UPON A TIME, A GIRL WISHED TO ATTEND A BALL, BUT SHE HAD NOTHING TO WEAR! As she looked at her dresses, she grew distressed. What would she do? She didn't have a trillion dollars for a formal! Suddenly, a magical lady appeared and whisked the girl away, fairy-like, to the closet where she kept her most lovely ballgowns. The girl found her size and tried on a dress that she felt really made her eyes pop. She thanked the lady, paid the minimal rental fee and texted her prince to ask if he would like to go to the dance with her. The ball was the kind of event a girl remembers always, and the couple had a spectacular time. There was no funny business to do with shoes or pumpkins—just a dress that made it safely back to Cinderella’s Closet by the following Wednesday. If this story sounds like a fairy tale, get excited! Dreams come true! Cinderella’s Closet is an affordable, formalwear rental service. It was started in a basement in 2003 by some moms from Borah High School and was taken over in 2005 by the Assistance League of Boise. About four years ago, the ladies at the Closet realized Prince Charming probably needed accessible formal wear too, and they began collecting tuxedos. Cinderella’s Closet now rents evenly to young men and women. The unbelievably low rental fee barely covers the cost of dry cleaning. Cinderella’s Closet services students with a student ID from Ada County. They open their doors for the five weeks of prom season each year, around the end of March and beginning of April. See AssistanceLeague.org for specific days and hours of operation. The dress collection currently includes every size from 0-28. “I think it’s an amazing community service," Daphne McNeal, Cinderella’s Closet co-chair says. "We have something for everyone. The advice I would give to teens is come out early in the season. You can check out your dress before your prom, and it’s not due until the Wednesday after your prom. The sizes are limited, so get there early in the season.” Formal wear donations are always welcome and tax-deductible! Bring “gently used” formal wear to the Assistance League Thrift Shop and mention to a volunteer that it is a donation to Cinderella’s Closet. 5825 N. Glenwood St., Boise 26

PARTING THOUGHTS
Inspired b y S u c c e s s ARTICLE JULIE MEYER | PHOTOGRAPHY REBEKAH PERNELL
Ta melle Livingston-Karlbom ’
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED ON YOUR CAREER PATH? I was kicked out of the corporate nest when my job was outsourced in 2007. I decided to turn my hobby into a money-earning business. I already had the majority of equipment needed to get started. I made business cards and sent a massive email to all my family and friends, and I haven’t looked back. WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Having clients that are super happy with my work and refer their friends and family. WHAT IS SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE PROUD OF? I’ve completed a lot of fun projects. One that comes to mind is my client wanted to wear her mother’s wedding dress, but she wanted it updated to a modern style. It was the Princess Diana style with lace up to the neck, big puffy sleeves, super long train. Let the fun begin! See the before and after at FitMyCurves.com. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN YOUR INDUSTRY? Know your worth when setting your prices. Most clients will appreciate your work and give you wonderful praise, but not always. Be prepared to educate clients on the tasks you need to do to get the project finished. Networking
in
various
groups
and businesses
has really helped me grow my business with both repeat and referred clients.
