The unprecedented actions that were taken to slow the spread of the Coronavirus had a severe impact on local businesses. While many businesses were able to adapt to stay open in a limited capacity, many businesses were forced to temporarily close. Our June issue is filled with stories from local businesses and nonprofits that continue to provide our community with top-notch services and support those in need. Be sure to check out our “Support Local” feature that includes updates from many of our valued partners. Now more than ever, Mason & Deerfield Lifestyle is grateful to be able to share the good news of our community each month, and it is because of the support of our partners.

They created a crowd -sourced fund—The Pay It Forward MADE Fund to help small businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pay It Forward MADE Fund issues grants to small businesses in the Mason area negatively impacted by the recent economic downturn. In its first few days, it raised over $15,000 from over 100 local contributors. Starting in late April, small businesses located in Mason or Deerfield could apply on-line for a grant, if they met certain criteria. When a business receives a grant through the crowdfunding

THREE MASON BUSINESSMEN SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE, PASSION AND WHY THEY LOVE SERVING THIS COMMUNITY.

SET OUT TO CREATE A COMPANY THAT WAS DIFFERENT. Growing up with an interest in math and using his hands, the longtime Mason resident and business owner saw his goal come to life. After working at another local remodeling firm, Rick was inspired to build a small business of his own that was customer-centric and focused on quality

rick boyle craftsmanship at a fair price. With that mission in mind, Creative Contracting Inc. (CCI) was born. Rick designed CCI with residential remodeling top of mind. His in-house design team works with clients to define needs and develop creative solutions from kitchen remodels to home additions. “Remodeling can be challenging,” Rick says. “Our goal is to provide a turnkey process that is enjoyable for everyone. It’s very rewarding to watch a client’s vision come to life by transforming an idea into reality.” But the impact on his client’s homes isn’t all that CCI is making. The business actively supports the Mason Deerfield Chamber, Mason City Schools, St. Susanna Parish, Boy Scout Troop 500 and Kindervelt #19. Putting people first will always remain Rick’s priority—personally and professionally. “We place great importance on communication

COUNTING PILLS OR LABELING BOTTLES FOR CO-OWNER AND PRESIDENT OF YOST PHARMACY, DAVID YOST. “People often view pharmacies with a traditional, narrow lens,” David says. “My favorite part of what I do is using tools like custom compounding, nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes for customers to create unique solutions for common problems.” The multi-faceted independent pharmacy and retail store prides itself on service and has a long history in Mason. Founded by David’s grandfather, Val Yost, in 1945, Yost Pharmacy grew over the next 41 years. The business was passed down to David and his sister and fellow pharmacist, Sarah McClain. “The core of our business is filling almost 3,000 prescriptions each week,” David says. “But it’s what we do next that defines us.” Counseling patients, sorting medications by time and day in pill organizers, delivering medications to homes free-of-charge, and offering custom prescription compounding are just some of the ways Yost Pharmacy differentiates itself from bigbox stores. In addition to what is done behind the counter, the pharmacy offers a large selection of medical equipment, vitamins and supplements. While increasing the health and wellness of the community is a top priority for David, staying nimble in a time of crisis has taken his service commitment to the next level. When COVID-19 arrived in Mason, the pharmacy quickly pivoted to free touchless delivery, and expanded mailing prescriptions directly to patients. They also unveiled curbside service and began compounding hand sanitizer for local law enforcement and patients. “I knew I wanted to be a part of this business longterm after watching my dad, Richard, in action,” David says. “I saw the way people responded to his kindness and I knew spreading that throughout our community was a legacy I needed to continue.” CONTINUED >

Today, people want more than a simple backyard patio. In addition to pools and spas, current trends in outdoor living spaces may include dedicated dining spaces, fire pits, bars, grills, water features, casual seating, outdoor kitchens or a combination of all of these. “Lighting, including LED and full color lighting controlled remotely, is also a big trend,” Steve adds. “It invites people outdoors and creates the ambiance and mood for entertaining and relaxing. It can also add an important element of security.” In addition to the backyard creations, the company provides complete landscape designs and professional grounds maintenance for residential, commercial and HOA properties. Whether you need to rework, refresh or maintain your existing landscaping or want to create a multi-faceted outdoor entertainment and living space, Lichtenberg Landscaping provides personal design services, quality materials and expert installations. “We visit the site, listen to your desires, give our input, do a site analysis, take photos and ensure what you’re looking for makes sense for the space. We do a fullscale plan with plants, lighting, patio spaces and more, then tie all of the pieces together. Most of the building and installation is done by our in-house team,” explains Steve. He adds, “I love doing the design work. I try to treat each project as if it is my own.” Lichtenberg Landscaping has won numerous awards from professional organizations such as Homearama, the Greater Cincinnati Home Builders Association and the Cincinnati Horticultural Society and has been spotlighted in local newspapers and magazines. They even appeared on an episode of ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. Steve is a long-time Mason resident with family roots that go back 50 years in this area. He reflects, “I am very grateful to be in such an amazing community. I try to treat everyone like family and give them personal service with respect and honesty. The Mason and Deerfield communities have come together in amazing ways to lift each other up, including efforts by the Mason Deerfield Chamber, Mason City Schools, local food pantries and residents. We talked to a variety of local businesses about how they’ve adapted to serve their customers and the community during the pandemic, and how we can best support them moving forward. Many are also providing new offerings and deals that make staying local even more appealing! Please check with businesses directly about their current open/services status, as state orders may change between writing and publication.
