Family and Our Furry Friends Make August Special
When our editorial team was putting together the August Kids + Pets issue — our annual love letter to the special souls we have the privilege of caring for — Prima Dance Co. felt like such a natural fit to feature.
As a former professional dancer who has performed all over the world, Douglas County resident Abby Welch was on the hunt for the right studio for her young daughters. She could find qual ity classes and teachers with the right credentials, sure, but nothing felt like home.
She wanted to find the right dance academy that cared as much about raising good humans as dancers. Oh, and she wanted a pretty space to hang out in as a mom.
So she built what she was looking for in Prima Dance Co. in Lone Tree.
Necessity is the mother of all invention.
At Highlands Ranch City Lifestyle, we celebrate all things local, all things community. We love to cheer on neighbors, nonprofits, entrepreneurs, civic groups and leaders, business owners like Abby Welch, who see a need and then build something monumental.

Historic Return of Bison to HRCA's Backcountry Wilderness Area
For the first time in more than 150 years, bison have gained access to graze Highlands Ranch Community Association's Backcountry Wilderness Area, through a collaborative conservation partnership with Denver Mountain Parks (DMP), Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, and Sanctuary Golf Course. The managed grazing initiative brings a portion of the historic Daniels Park bison herd to approximately 150 acres of native prairie within the Backcountry Wilderness Area.

Katie Trexler, Emmy-winning TV journalist and current Lone Tree resident, is the author of the newly released What Do I Tell My Daughter?, a memoir about losing her sense of self while balancing career and motherhood.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW YOU CAME TO LIVE IN HIGHLANDS RANCH/LONE TREE.
I was born and raised in Littleton, graduated from Arapahoe High School, and studied broadcast journalism and political science at CU Boulder. After graduating, I spent eight years working around the country, building my career in television news. I was thrilled to return home in 2000 and was the morning anchor at 7News (Denver 7) until 2007. In 2008, my family settled in Highlands Ranch because we loved the community, and it was close to my parents. I remarried in 2022 — and now go by Katie Trexler McLean — and live in Lone Tree with my husband, Steve McLean. Together we have four children.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND YOUR DECISION TO WRITE THIS BOOK.
I’m a storyteller at heart. As a journalist and now a PR professional, I’ve spent my career helping people share their stories. This time, I felt compelled to write about my journey through motherhood.
Like many women, I wanted both a meaningful career and to be a mom. For several years, I thought I had it all, working my dream job in news and raising our boy/girl twins. Then one day, I made the difficult decision to leave my job for my family. I had no idea how deeply that choice would impact my identity, self-worth, and earning power.
Eventually, I reinvented myself and went into public relations, hoping for more flexibility and balance. Along the way, I realized how hard it can be to juggle everyone else’s needs without losing important parts of ourselves.

What Do I Tell My Daughter? Hard-won Wisdom for Tomorrow’s Women is a memoir about motherhood, career, identity, and the hidden costs of sacrificing parts of ourselves for the people we love.
Each chapter ends with a short note to my daughter, a lesson or piece of hard-won wisdom to guide her.
WHY SHOULD PEOPLE READ THE BOOK?
Early readers and reviewers say they appreciate how candid and relatable my story is. They see themselves in the pages and appreciate someone saying what many women have felt for years but rarely discuss.
I hope the book sparks honest conversations, not just between mothers and daughters, but also with our sons and partners. Most families today depend on two incomes. Each parent will likely make some trade-off. The more openly we communicate about our goals, hopes, and dreams, the more likely we are to have healthy relationships and happy families.

Prima Dance Co. Founder Uses World-Class Talent and Growth
Mindset to Build Beautiful Lone Tree Studio

The moment you walk through the door at Prima Dance Co, you know you’ve arrived somewhere special. Every detail has been considered, from the natural light streaming into each studio space to the couches where parents gather with coffees in hand. Here, professional standards meet joy and smiles. It takes a visionary to create this kind of magic. Former professional dancer Abby Welch is exactly that, and Prima Dance is her answer to what dance education can be.
A dancer from the age of 5, Welch grew up in the Washington, D.C., suburbs, where she found her first instructor, a former soloist with the New York City Ballet trained by American choreographer George Balanchine. “I was very lucky that a highlevel teacher was in our neighborhood,” Welch says. That standard of excellence is exactly what she’s building at Prima Dance.
Years later, after a professional dance career that took Welch around the world, she found herself driving her three daughters across Denver to multiple studios. This routine proved unsustainable, but at a studio closer to home, Welch discovered something more troubling.
“[My daughter] was getting great instruction, but she wasn’t getting great life lessons. She wasn’t with people who cared about how she was developing psychologically, which was most important to me as a mother.” Within that disappointment, Welch saw an opportunity to create something South Denver was missing.
Drawing on her previous experience founding two successful dance studios, Welch got to work. She spent the better part of two years creating the space she wished existed for her daughters. “I wanted it to be some place I’d want to go to and not dread taking my child to this extracurricular activity,” she explains.
Welch worked with an architect to create a bespoke dance experience designed for dancers and their families alike. Dedicated dressing rooms, a sibling play area, and a welcoming lobby that’s become a gathering spot are thoughtful touches that make Prima Dance a place worth lingering.
Each of the six studios has state-of-the-art Marley sprung floors that protect growing joints and help prevent injuries. Light pours in from large windows. You can see trees. You can see the sky. “That’s important when you dance,” Welch says. “If you feel like you’re in a cave or in a black hole, that can affect your posture and how you feel about being there.”
Prima Dance offers a full roster of classes, including ballet, tap, acro, jazz, contemporary, and hip hop. Classes range from pre-school to adult. For dancers who want to compete, the Prima Pre-Pro Company offers two tracks: ballet and commercial dance. Regardless of style or skill level, every Prima dancer receives high-level teaching from instructors at the top of their field.
The Prima faculty hold master’s and bachelor’s degrees in ballet, contemporary dance, and pedagogy. Among the ranks are American Ballet Theater-certified teachers, classic Giordano Jazz certifications, and professional dancers who have performed and choreographed on the world’s biggest stages. “I’m very proud of the staff we have,” Welch says of the 14 instructors. “They are each so good in their own dance specialty.”
Among the shining stars is Monica Ramirez, a professional dancer who has performed at the Grammys, toured with Rihanna, and appeared in the Apple TV+ holiday film
Spirited, featuring Ryan Reynolds, Will Ferrell, and Octavia Spencer. “Dance isn’t about perfection,” Ramirez says. “It’s about progress, artistry, and resilience. My goal is to create an environment where they feel challenged, supported, and excited to keep growing, not just as dancers, but as people.”
Ashley Richter and her two daughters fell in love with Prima Dance a year ago. “We came in for a trial class, and my girls left smiling, their passion reinvigorated,” she says. “There’s consideration for how kids learn and the importance of what kids are hearing. They constantly preach: every body is a dancing body.”
For Richter, the experience has expanded beyond dance. “The studio has become a second family … rooted in a shared appreciation of our children’s passions.”
Community was always part of Welch’s vision, but so was something bigger. “I want to be the go-to place in Denver. When someone says, ‘Where should we go for dance?’ I want them to immediately say my name.”

For many teenagers, getting a first job is a rite of passage, a chance to earn spending money, learn responsibility, and gain independence. For 16-yearold Josiah, however, that milestone carries far greater meaning.
Josiah lives in Highlands Ranch with his parents and younger brothers Charlie and Marshall. He has Mosaic Down Syndrome, a condition that creates cognitive and social challenges many teenagers never have to consider while entering the workforce.
While most teens can apply for parttime jobs in restaurants, stores, or recreation centers, traditional workplaces often are not designed with Josiah’s needs in mind. Busy environments can

feel overstimulating, unfamiliar interactions can be stressful, and transportation presents another challenge because driving is not an option.
Watching this reality unfold, his parents began asking an important question. How could they help their son build confidence, independence, and practical life skills in a world that might not naturally create those opportunities for him?
The answer came in an unexpected place.
A year ago, the family launched Farmer Bros Call of Doody, a pet waste removal business created to teach all three boys the value of hard work, entrepreneurship, and financial responsibility.
Like many parents raising kids in an affluent community, they noticed their sons had grown used to simply asking for what they wanted: new shoes, outings, snacks, or spending money. The requests seemed endless, and they wanted their children to understand that money should be earned, not simply handed over.
But while teaching responsibility was the original goal, the business quickly became centered around something bigger: creating meaningful work specifically for Josiah.
The boys helped build every part of the company, from brainstorming names and voting on the logo to opening a business bank account, creating flyers, and going doorto-door introducing themselves to neighbors. It became a hands-on lesson in hustle, persistence, and teamwork.
Instead of forcing him into a workplace that may not accommodate his disability, the family built a job around his strengths. The work is quiet, flexible, and low stimulation. He can listen to music, work at his own pace, avoid overwhelming social interactions, and experience the pride that comes with earning his own money.
Today, the business serves roughly 10-20 clients each week. All three boys help with pricing, scheduling, advertising, and the physical work itself. Together, they are learning what it means to build something from the ground up and take ownership over something they created.
For Josiah, the greatest reward has been confidence. Having his own income has given him freedom, independence, and a sense of accomplishment that many young people take for granted.

His parents also hope the experience teaches generosity. They wanted their sons to understand that hard work allows people not only to provide for themselves but also to give back to others in meaningful ways.
Looking ahead, the family dreams even bigger. They hope Josiah will someday grow the business and eventually train other people with disabilities who face similar barriers entering traditional workplaces while creating flexible opportunities designed around their strengths.
They imagine a future where trucks carry the company logo across the community and where Josiah steps into a leadership role not simply as an employee but as a mentor helping others discover the same confidence and independence this business has already given him.
For this family, the mission extends well beyond profit.
What began as a family lesson about work ethic has become something far more meaningful, proof that sometimes building a business is not simply about making money but creating opportunity where it did not exist before. Josiah’s mom, Wendy, says, “I love the endless learning my boys are getting about life, leadership, hard work, responsibility, decision making, and money management.”

If I’m being completely honest, 16-year-old me was mortified beyond belief to be walking with my mom into Yesterday’s Scrapbooking Store in Redmond, Wash. I was simply looking for the job my parents required to pay for the gas to power my newfound freedom in the form of a driver’s license. I rolled my eyes as we entered. Scrapbooking?! No way! That’s only for old ladies! Imagine my surprise when they called me to set up an interview, and I was hired. If I had known then that that one singular moment of stepping into Yesterday’s would change the course of my life forever (and I promise I’m not even being dramatic!), I would have barged in with a huge smile on my face,
confidence in my voice, and said something along the lines of, “Hello! My name is Paige Taylor Evans, and this is my density! I mean, destiny!” #backtothefuture
To me, scrapbooking is more than just paper, stickers, scissors, and glue. It’s my creative outlet, and how I express myself. It’s my therapy and my happy place. I can’t go a day without making something with my hands. Since that fateful day back in 2001, every single job and aspect of my working life has revolved around scrapbooking. I am now proud to say that I have been scrapbooking since I was 16 years old and own and run a successful business from my home here in Highlands Ranch.

Scrapbooking is the perfect way to preserve the memories you are making with your kids or pets in our beautiful state of Colorado. If you’ve never scrapbooked before and it feels daunting, here are some easy steps to get started:
• Go to Simple Pleasures Rubber Stamps & Scrapbooking in Colorado Springs. It’s totally worth the drive because you’ll find everything you need and then some!
• YouTube is a great resource for helpful videos. I have tons of free content, so you can start by looking up my Make With Me Monday series, which is where we scrapbook together so you can follow right along.
• Join the scrapbooking community! There are lots of small groups all around Colorado (called a crop). There are also hundreds of scrapbooking groups on Facebook. My group is called Happy Scrappy Place, and I’d love to see you there!
• Search through Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook for inspiration. You can find me on all those platforms.
• Set aside 20 minutes for creativity every day. I know time is a precious commodity, so it can be hard, but just 20 minutes for you to get those creative juices flowing is so good for the soul.

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE
Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.
Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.
Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.
After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”
The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.
