The Women's Issue

I love any opportunity to recognize the women in my life who make life richer and more beautiful. Mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, aunts, and grandmothers are some of the most influential women in our lives.

With Mother’s Day in May, all eyes are on moms. But it’s not just the biological mothers who deserve our attention. It’s the mother figures who have made an indelible impact on us. These women, each with unique roles, pour irreplaceable contributions into our lives. Their silent service blesses those under their care and reveals to us a beauty that can’t be seen or understood except through their eyes.

In addition to strong and resilient women in my family, I am fortunate to have groups of close friends who’ve enriched my life along the way.  I am still in close contact with friends from childhood and college sorority sisters who get together regularly for dinner and girl’s trips. There’s the group of moms who spent Friday afternoons together when our kids were little, trying to keep some semblance of normalcy and camaraderie. Our children are older now, but the ties that bind are as strong as ever.

And these days, I have the opportunity to meet and know many extraordinary women right here in the Highlands Ranch/Lone Tree area. Our yearly Women of Influence highlights women bringing a little extra to what they do. We talk to Jenelle Goodrich, who has dedicated her life to providing care to young people whose lives have been marked by challenging circumstances. And we say a fond farewell to one remarkable woman who, in the service of her community, has made a lasting impact in Lone Tree and the South Metro area.

While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to go the extra mile and patronize businesses owned by women. By doing so, we not only celebrate their entrepreneurial spirit but also contribute to the economic empowerment of women in our area. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role—connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to our local women.

Finally, take a moment to text or make a phone or video call to the women in your life who deserve recognition. It’s a small gesture that can brighten someone’s day and remind them how much they are loved and appreciated. Let’s not underestimate the power of our words and actions in strengthening our relationships and building a more supportive community.

Happy May!

Parting Words From Mayor Jackie Millet

As I come to the end of my tenure as mayor, I am filled with profound fulfillment and gratitude for the privilege you’ve given me to serve our remarkable city. Throughout the past 20 years — as a planning commissioner, city council member, and mayor — it has been my honor to work alongside dedicated elected officials, talented staff, and engaged residents in shaping the vibrant community Lone Tree is today. As a civil engineer turned public servant, I have remained guided by a simple belief: solutions stem from action, not rhetoric. Our journey together has been memorable, and we have achieved much in service to our community.

Together, we have:

• Worked diligently to ensure that the City of Lone Tree exemplifies efficient, transparent, and inclusive government. We have prioritized partnerships, evidence-based decision-making, proactive infrastructure development, and public safety.

• Ensured the fiscal future of our city through the passage of 2E in 2021, committing to the continuation of high-quality services and amenities our city is known for.

• Established a robust multi-modal transportation network to facilitate the efficient movement of people and commerce with significant investments in light rail and Link on Demand micro-mobility. Bike and pedestrian mobility enhancements created a robust system for visitors, residents, and businesses in Lone Tree.

OUR TOWN | LIFE + CULTURE
20

• Welcomed significant employers such as Charles Schwab, Cochlear Americas, and Kiewit. In our supportive, business-friendly environment, we witnessed reinvestment from Lone Tree staples like Sky Ridge Medical Center and Park Meadows Retail Resort and the success of local businesses, including Lone Tree Brewery, Monk & Mongoose, and Vibe Foods.

• Weathered an unprecedented pandemic and emerged stronger and more resilient. Park Meadows Retail Resort, the first mall to reopen in our state, became a national model for its peers. During those challenging times, Lone Tree residents rallied to support local businesses, healthcare professionals, and first responders.

• Enhanced the livability and vitality of our city with a breadth of housing opportunities and investments in the arts, recreation, open space, and expanded community engagement. We finished paying off the bonds you approved to build our award-winning Arts Center and beloved recreation amenities like Cook Creek Pool, lowering the city sales tax in December!

Together, we will continue to build a brighter and more prosperous future for all who call Lone Tree home. As I prepare to pass the baton to the next Lone Tree leaders, I am filled with optimism for the future. Our new chapter will be guided by the values and principles that have defined us from the very beginning: respect, collaboration, inclusivity, and innovation.

I want to once again express my deepest gratitude to every resident, staff, partner, business representative, elected official, volunteer, and friend for their partnership and support. Serving as Lone Tree mayor has been the honor of a lifetime, and I look forward to witnessing the remarkable future achievements in our extraordinary city.

Cheers to you, Lone Tree!

“Together, we have raised the profile of the city from an outer ring Denver suburb to a vibrant, complete community. Collective action has allowed our impact to extend beyond the borders of Lone Tree.”

2024 Women of Influence

FOLLOWING THE VOICE INSIDE ON THE PATH TO SUCCESS

Each year, Highlands Ranch City Lifestyle highlights women in our community who are doing things a little “extra.”  This year’s women, almost by accident, if you believe in accidents, all share one remarkable thing in common: they’ve all listened to the voice inside to follow their hearts. One walked the path to becoming a writer; another heard God’s voice directing her to serve others. One blesses her children with the lessons of her parents; another braved business challenges to express her creativity and support her family. Here, each shares a glimpse into where they came from, what inspires them, and what they are proud of.

“I passionately wanted to contribute my voice and my ancestral experiences to the world of literature.”

Kali Fajardo-Anstine

Corina”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.

I was born and raised in Denver, but I’ve lived across the country from Key West, Florida, to Austin, Texas. I hail from a large multicultural Chicano and Indigenous family of seven siblings. I received my BA in English from Metropolitan State University and my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Wyoming. I’m now the Endowed Chair in Creative Writing at Texas State University, an appointment I’ll hold through 2024.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A PUBLISHED AUTHOR.

I dreamed of being a writer from an early age, reading everything I could get my hands on, and I spent years as an independent bookseller at West Side Books in North Denver. I passionately wanted to contribute my voice and my ancestral experiences to the world of literature. I never let that passion go away. My path wasn’t easy. If you’re undertaking a long journey, begin by placing one foot in front of the other.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Research! I love visiting archives and museums.

FAVORITE ACCOMPLISHMENT?

Being nominated for the National Book Award in Fiction for my first book “Sabrina & Corina.” I brought my parents with me to New York City, and together we walked the red carpet. kalifajardoanstine.com

Medical Director, Epilepsy, Littleton Medical Director, Neuroscience, Rocky Mountain Region

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.

My upbringing traverses diverse landscapes, commencing in the sun-kissed environs of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and the rich tapestry of Caribbean culture. I transitioned to the rugged majesty of the Rocky Mountains for undergraduate studies at Colorado College. I pursued my medical education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in the field of neurology. My tenure there included medical school, residency and fellowship, and formative years in my professional development. I have dedicated my career to the study and treatment of epilepsy, a complex and multifaceted disorder.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT THE MEDICAL PROFESSION?

The camaraderie and collaboration among colleagues. Working alongside other dedicated healthcare professionals—nurses and therapists, researchers and administrators—is both humbling and energizing.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

The relentless pursuit of possibility and the unwavering resilience of the human spirit. Individuals who refuse to be defined by their circumstances, who face adversity head-on and emerge stronger, and more determined than ever.

FAVORITE ACCOMPLISHMENTS?

Without a doubt, it’s being a mother. My professional achievements hold significance, but nothing compares to the profound role of motherhood. It’s the embodiment of hope, resilience, and boundless potential. In the process of nurturing and guiding my daughter, I’ve become more patient, more compassionate, and more attuned. adventhealth.com/find-doctor

“Like many young girls then, I dreamed of following in Clara Barton’s footsteps to save mankind from suffering, while wearing her white nurse’s cap and redlined blue cape.”

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND.

I was raised in San Diego, Calif., in a small home on the Point Loma Peninsula, a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean. Our home’s huge, west-facing bay window showcased spectacular sunsets and yearly whale migrations, which delighted me. Like many young girls then, I dreamed of following in Clara Barton’s footsteps to save mankind from suffering, while wearing her white nurse’s cap and red-lined blue cape. While nothing quite that grand materialized, God nurtured in me the seed of service to others. My first job was as a travel agent, then a flight attendant, bookkeeper, entrepreneur, and real estate agent, while serving as a school, civic, and ministerial volunteer. I’ve lived in Wind Crest since 2021, retired from all professional vocations in 2023, but continue to serve with our local Thrive Ministry, as well as ministries within my home church.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WORK WITH THRIVE MINISTRY.

I learned the ministry was founded in Colorado in 1907 as Women of the Harvest. Now called Thrive, its mission is to provide spiritual resources, transformative experiences, and authentic oneon-one relationships for women who minister overseas. Having personally witnessed the profound impact Thrive has on missionaries and humanitarian workers, I feel enormously privileged to play a small role in their organization.

This decision stemmed from my desire to combine my artistic roots with the creation of practical, wearable art pieces.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY TO JEWELRY DESIGN, AND ULTIMATELY OPENING YOUR SHOP

After honing my craft as a skilled artisan for various jewelers, I felt compelled to channel my creativity into custom designs that cater to each client’s unique tastes.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I draw inspiration from the wonders of everyday life. My creative process involves observing nature’s beauty, architectural marvels, and people’s diverse personalities, blending these elements into exquisite wearable art.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MATERIALS TO WORK WITH?

I have a deep appreciation for both precious and semi-precious metals, along with a particular fondness for diamonds, especially those with captivating colors.

Jenelle Goodrich’s childhood experience taught her two things: the saving grace of strong community and a tough, determined work ethic can transform lives.

Jenelle’s mother suffered from substance use disorder and fell prey to those who took advantage of her vulnerability. Jenelle was 10 years old when her mom died. Fortunately, Jenelle had close family and community to raise her. She credits that foundation as the reason she can do her work today.

“I was lucky that I had a strong family unit with my father and grandparents so that I could take a very different path,” Jenelle says. “I look back and think I was allowed to endure and witness this and grow in a way that some day I could give back to those in need.”

Jenelle is the founder and executive director of From Silenced to Saved, a faith-based, third-party case management organization focused on the recovery, restoration, and healing of victims of domestic human trafficking. They provide individualized victim support through trauma-informed mentorship, community awareness and education, legislative reform advocacy, and on-site engagement with law enforcement agencies.

Jenelle pursues this demanding, exhausting work with the passion and grit of a warrior. Her 60-hour-plus work weeks are unpaid. She believes it is her higher calling to provide support to those who suffer.

“I push forward daily, hoping someone I assist feels loved and served enough to save themselves," Jenelle says. "My mother didn’t have these options and choices when she was alive. If I convince one person, then it is worth every late night, hard day, crying in the car, and pure madness and chaotic schedule doing this work brings.”

“...I will not keep silent...till her righteousness goes forth as brightness, her salvation like a blazing torch.”

Faith-based FSTS doesn’t push dogma onto those it serves, Jenelle says. “I don’t care who you love, your pronouns, how you identify, or your skin color, if you’ve been harmed, I am going to serve you without judgment, period,” she says.

FSTS has an official, accredited relationship with law enforcement and is invited on-site to intervene immediately when officers encounter victims.

According to Vikki Migoya, FBI Denver Public Affairs Officer, "FSTS Is the only non-governmental organization to work with the FBI Denver Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force, which operates in Colorado and Wyoming. FSTS works with FBI task force members and victim specialists to respond on-scene during national operations to assist with providing emergency services such as transportation, lodging, food, and clothing.”

Jenelle was honored with the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award in 2022.

“We are honored to recognize Ms. Goodrich and her organization for their commitment to helping recovered victims. She works closely with community partners to bridge the gap with law enforcement in order to provide mission-critical support,” said Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek. "We are proud to partner with From Silenced to Saved.”

A graduate of Colorado Christian University, Jenelle studied philosophy, counseling, and theology, specifically focused on cults and the occult. She began counseling in a Christian setting, helping people escape a cult-controlled life, which is strikingly relevant to the work she does now, she says. Jenelle then completed her Certified Family Trauma Professional course, Mental Health First Aid, and Psychotherapy Training. For nine years, Jenelle has been a partner at a high school for survivors and a high-risk school for both girls and boys. Appointed by Gov. Jared Polis, she serves on the Colorado Human Trafficking Council and the Advisory Alliance Committee.

Jenelle acknowledges that success in this work looks different in each case and can come in small doses. For one person, it may include reduced drug use and risky behavior. For another, it may be completing high school and moving into independent living.

“Everyone I have worked with has a success story, even if it seems small,” Jenelle says. “Success is sprinkled throughout like glitter, only shining at times, but it’s absolutely still there. The key is recognizing them and applauding even the smallest victories so they build another success on top of that.”

DIY: Upscale Floral Bouquet

Fresh flowers brighten up any room, and a thoughtfully arranged bouquet is the ultimate finishing touch to a home's decor. Over the past few years, I've developed the ritual of picking up grocery store stems once a week and spending some time creating a beautiful vase. More than home decor, fresh flowers simply put a smile on my face. For me, it's self-care that others can enjoy.  Next time you are at the grocery store, consider picking up a few bundles of stemmed flowers. With a few easy steps, you can transform grocery store flowers into something splendid and upscale, an everyday luxury.

1. Select Flowers: Find seasonal color combinations, including varied shapes, sizes, and textures. Most grocery store arrangements already have strong combinations. Look for fillers, smaller flowers meant to highlight the larger flowers. You’ll probably need one arrangement and two fillers to build two average-sized bouquets.

2. Choose Focus and Prepare Stems: Remove all lower foliage on each stem and sort by type. To begin assembling, choose 4-6 stems to use as focal flowers. These are generally the biggest and brightest.

3. Measure and Place: Hold focal stems next to the vessel to measure where to cut. Use an approximate two-thirds vase to one-thirds stem ratio. Cut at an angle, removing at least an inch to help absorb maximum water.

4. Fill out Bouquet: Cut the filler stems slightly shorter than the focal flower stems. Continue measuring your fillers and adding them around the outside. To add contrast, you can also add fillers to the center of the focal stems.

5. Tips and tricks: If you work quickly, add water last to prevent recutting a stem if you change your mind. Choosing a vessel with a narrow, straight opening instead of a flared top helps stems stand straight. Cut the stems to reach the bottom of the vessel for support. If you use a large vase, increase the number of focal stems and fillers.
