If the state of one’s closet is a mirror into the soul, I’m guessing some of us have some soul-searching to do. In this month’s Style Issue, we feature per sonal stylist and closet organizer, Monika Nielsen of Your Style Rehabist, a longtime Highlands Ranch resident and one of the warmest and inspiring gals you could meet. She’s on a mission to help people go from clutter and icky — you know, those fabulous jeans from 15 pounds ago that you cringe at every morning but just won’t pitch — to inspired and empowered. No, really, putting some thought into the clothes, shoes and accessories you surround yourself with can have a huge impact on time management, confidence and headspace. And that goes for everyone, no matter if you have a seat in the C-suite, man age a household, or grind away as a solo-preneur. Douglas County Libraries announces its 2022 Brew Tour, inviting residents to connect with the library, each other, and local businesses in the community. Think about getting ready in the morning. You’ve just woken, changed out of your pajamas, maybe taken a shower. In addition to helping her clients, Monika is focused on helping the community. She works with local nonprofits like Dress for Success so that her clients can “transfer the blessing of clothes they no longer need onto someone who does.” She also likes to avoid fast fashion for the sake of the environment, and really tries to shop local, supporting women-owned boutiques in the area.

She begins with physically going through her clients’ closets. They delineate clothes into categories: fit and feel good, no longer work, and can’t let go because they have an emotional connection to it.

“I help people emotionally detach from unmet expectations,” Monika says. “We pull apart why, I help them walk through those feelings and help shed them. Then I usher my clients into a giving place where their best things get to become someone else’s best things.”
“The closet is the place dreams go to die,” Monika says. The process of purging frees her clients not only of excess clothing, but more importantly, the burden of negative emotional connections.
Next, Monika helps her clients clarify and capsulate. They review their lifestyle needs and style, then shop their own closet to create easy outfits for the different occasions in their lives: work, date night, easy weekend, etc. She even creates room for the “grubbies,” she just stores them out of sight, so they aren’t hiding the feel-great outfits.Onceherclients’ closets are minimized, Monika’s calls on her many years in retail to help her clients find the items that they still need. Monika is an uber-efficient shopper, weeding out all the marketing tricks retailers use to help her clients buy only what they really need. She calls it shopping with intention, “knowing what you need, where to find it, and avoiding the extras.”

LaKenya Holladay met and instantly connected with Kristy a few years after she lost her husband. Kristy helped LeKenya physically and emotionally downsize her home to attract the right family to buy.

The Castle Pines home pictured here is a prime example of Kristy’s work. The owner Paula engaged Kristy initially to help her choose some fabrics at the Denver Design Center. From that connection grew their partnership to design the whole house. Kristy creates an intentional connec tion with each of her clients, so that their new interiors tell a unique story. In this home, Kristy pulled inspiration from the objets d’art the family collected while living in China. Kristy partnered with Forged in Walnut to build a console which raises, lowers, and rotates a television 360 degrees so the family can watch from the kitchen, dining, or living room.
“It was therapeutic. Kristy transformed my home into a beautiful showpiece, which attracted a loving family, and made me feel good about letting the past go,” LaKenya said. LaKenya along with Lisa Fernstrum and Syanna Swyers are now all close friends with the Smiths, taking girls trips, sharing holidays, hiking, shopping and design ing together. At the urging of Kristy, both Syanna and Lisa pursued a design education. Syanna, for whom Kristy has designed three homes, now works with DBK as a consultant, and Lisa designs kitchens and baths. Designs by Kristy, rebranded as DBK Interior Services, offers a full suite of services, including single room design, onsite or virtual consultations, and new production home finish selection. They plan to source retail goods soon, like favorite finds, one-of-a-kinds, and shop able rooms, with plans to open a store.
“The home is modern, we didn’t want it to be too Asian, but instead accents that nod to the culture and tie the antiques with the modern vibe,” Kristy says. “We designed the pocket doors for John’s office using the grid found on traditional Asian screens, refined it, then also used a similar design on the console.”
“Designers wear many hats: purchasing agent, peacemaker, project manager, psy chologist. I now wear some of those hats, so Kristy can connect and create,” he says.
A subtle grid can even be found in the sofa fabric for visual cohesion and bal ance. Additionally, Kristy called on local company Black Hound to custom make the metal burn out hanging above the fireplace, inspired by a similar piece they’d seen in KristyBudapest.viewseach client as a special part ner. This is true of her colleagues as well.
In turn, great designers partner with cli ents to tell their stories. Designer Kristy Smith has built partnerships over her 20 years in the industry, helping expand her business to better tell her own story.

Josiah James doesn’t look like a fashion designer. He is very much a 10-yearold boy, wiggles and all. But given the challenge at Christmas of buying gifts for family members on a limited budget, he and mom Amber headed to the craft store to find something he could make. Josiah found he had a knack at using clay and designed earrings. After a homeschool charge to sell something homemade as an economics lesson (mom was thinking a lemonade stand), Josiah decided to make more earrings, and sell them. It was a huge suc cess. Josiah designs each pair uniquely, adding texture, scrapings and materi als such as gold leaf for variation. josiah james
