LIFESTYLE LETTER

May Joy

May 2022 PUBLISHER

Jennifer Starbuck | Jennifer.Starbuck@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR

Sonja Nix | Sonja.Nix@CityLifestyle.com

I read an essay once questioning why Mother’s Day is in May, one of the busiest months of the year for many of us, second only to December. Whatever the reason, most women I know just get done what needs to be done. I feel blessed every May, given the opportunity to highlight the fabulous women of our community in the women’s issue. After last year’s Covid separations, we were happy to gather for a photo shoot at Monk & Mongoose Coffee Co. in Lone Tree. Spending time with these successful women, I loved hearing their stories and being in their presence. They each have an exquisite joyfulness about them, from subdued calm to energetic exuberance. And yet, reading through their bios, I realize how similar we all are. Life has brought each of them gifts, and struggles. They are the accumulation of life’s wins and fails, ups and downs. Like years past, we asked them a series of questions. Represented here are a condensed version of their answers. I encourage you to visit citylifestyle.com/highlandsranch to read their full answers in their own words. The thing that struck me was the final question we asked each of these women. “What makes you laugh?” Every single one had a similar iteration for their answer: the people around them. Their spouses, workmates, their kids, other people’s kids, belly laughs, laughing babies, themselves. I think it demonstrates that our community, the joy we offer, the joy we accept in return, is a sign of success, regardless of age, job title or wage. And guys – don’t worry, June is coming soon. We’ve got great things in store for you too. See you around town, SONJA NIX, EDITOR @HIGHLANDSRANCHCITYLIFESTYLE

Michael Magrin at the Museum of Western Art South Denver artist Michael Magrin's work will be a part of the show “The Heavens Declare! Celebrating the Glory of the Skies." Running April 1 through July 9 in Kerrville, Texas, the show brings together artists who capture the West's magnificent, wide-open skies in their work. Michael seeks to capture the emotions reflected in the western landscape through oil painting, reflecting nostalgia of place and feelings of peace. What emerges is a contemporary expression of the Colorado skyscape. MichaelMagrin.com

The Ladies at NWDCC & EDC

Kristy Howell, Amy Sherman & Trista Borrego

Working to Make Northwest Douglas County a Thriving and Prospering Place to Work and Live ARTICLE BY SONJA NIX | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA CHRISTIANSON

18

O UR TOWN | LOCAL SERVI CE S

The Northwest Douglas County Chamber and Economic Development Corp. (NWDCC & EDC), is a mouthful. It accurately describes, however, the complex and varied work performed by the women at the NWDCC & EDC. So what does a chamber & EDC do? Their mission statement sums it up well. “A Catalyst for Business Growth. A Convener of Leaders and Influencers. A Champion for the Community.” The NWDCC & EDC is a membership driven non-profit organization that serves the business interests and broader communities of Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Roxborough, Sterling Ranch, and the Santa Fe corridor. In addition to networking, referral and leads groups, and the very popular Women’s Business Alliance, the NWDCC& EDC hosts educational events such as Trends in Commercial Real Estate & How To: Healthcare Enrollment. They hold an annual membership breakfast and a business awards luncheon honoring those members who’ve made an impact in their sector or on the community. They partner with local governmental and quasi-governmental agencies advocating locally, state wide and on the federal level for for business-friendly policy and regulatory issues. Over the past few years, they became sourcing experts for their members on where to buy essential safety gear. On the economic development side, they participate in attracting and retaining businesses of all sizes to our area. They view their role to support the health of the broader community and economy by building a strong and supportive business culture and environment in our community. Finally, they seek to buildup new business leaders, entrepreneurs and next-generation leadership. As part of the economic development efforts, the Board of Directors led an economic and demographic study prior to the pandemic. A five-year economic development strategic plan followed with initiatives for business attraction, expansion and retention, marketing the region, working with the aerospace

industry, and development of a real estate committee. Highlights over the last year include Terumo BCT and Lockheed Martin expanding into Highlands Ranch, and a recent announcement of Blue Origin coming. Central Park and Sterling Ranch are thriving with new residential and retail. And they throw some pretty fun Business After Hours happy hours around town. Amy Sherman is the President & CEO, and has over 25 years of experience in the chamber of commerce, trade association and economic development industries. She was one of Denver Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 winners in 2012, Economic Development Rookie of the Year in 2013, and Denver Business Journal’s Top Women in Energy in 2015. Additionally, Amy was awarded the Colorado Chamber President of the Year 2008, and top women of Jefferson County in 2011. Trista Borrego currently serves as the Director of Events & Programs, with the well deserved informal title Director of Fun. She has previous experience managing both small and large teams in telecommunications, human resources, relationship development, and employee engagement. She is passionate about serving the members of the Chamber & EDC, helping connect business leaders and providing opportunity for the community to thrive. Kristy Howell is the Director of Membership and Communication. She began her career in sports and entertainment working for the minor league baseball team the New Orleans Zephyrs. She came to Colorado from her native Louisiana to work for the Colorado Rockies and then at the Pepsi Center. Throughout her time in the sports industry, Kristy developed strong partnerships with Chambers and EDCs. When she decided to leave sports and entertainment behind, working for a Chamber and EDC was a natural fit. Together, these women work to build a place where business thrives, employment is plentiful and our community prospers. Visit them at tnwdouglascounty.org

D R . JA N D E L A L L E N - DAV I S PRESIDENT & CEO | CRAIG HOSPITAL I am an Air Force brat. I attended Dartmouth for undergrad and medical school, then did my Ob/GYN residency at Thomas Jefferson University. I came West with National Health Service Corps at the Indian Health Service in Tuba City, Ariz., on the Navajo reservation. My family has lived in Highlands Ranch since 1994. WHO INSPIRES YOU? My 97-year-old aunt. Her age and the fact that we are African American limited her opportunities, and yet worked at the National Security Agency as an analyst. She is a role model for smart, confident, and independent women. I continue to live inspired by her philosophy, “For those to whom much is given, much is required.” WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF? When I stopped worrying about promotions and began to take full advantage of the experiences that were around me, I found that the real growth began. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I am a fiber artist. I started quilting in 1989 and I haven’t stopped exploring new ways to manipulate fiber and fabric. I spend a lot of my free time in my art room creating.

LEAH ROSINE OWNER | ABLOOM FLORIST “HAVE VISION AND GO FOR IT! IT WON’T HAPPEN QUICKLY, SO HAVE PASSION, DRIVE, AND EXPECT TO STUMBLE AND FALL. AND BE KIND TO YOURSELF.“

I was raised in Galesburg, Ill., began playing golf very young, then attended The University of Iowa on a golf scholarship. I settled in Highlands Ranch in 2014 when my former corporate job brought me to Denver WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON FAILURE? Use the situation as a learning experience. We don’t become the best version of ourselves if we don’t experience failure. There are blessings there you just can’t see in the moment. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? Good health and giving back to the community by working with Haven of Hope. Professionally, expanding Abloom within the South Metro.

JULIE WHALEN SALES MANAGER GUILD MORTGAGE HIGHLANDS RANCH “NEVER COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS. IF YOU FOCUS ON YOURSELF AND YOUR ACTIONS, YOU WILL MAKE RESULTS HAPPEN”

I’m a third generation Colorado native, attending Chatfield High and studied Human Development at Colorado State University. I met my husband there and we have been married for 26 years. We have raised two wonderful boys who I am most proud of. WHO INSPIRES YOU? My dad Mark was a successful realtor in Colorado. He was my first mentor, guide, and coach. He introduced me to the home financing industry and without his advice and insight, I am not sure I would be where I am today. He passed in 2019 but continues to be who I look up to. WHAT ARE YOU WORKING TOWARD? A big part of our company’s values as well as my personal aspirations involve the success of those around me. From community involvement to my own team’s development, I strive to create an atmosphere of support and success. HOW DO YOU UNWIND AND PROVIDE SELF-CARE? We are fortunate enough to live in an amazing area in which most prioritize self-care. We work hard, play hard, and enjoy rest. You can find me traveling with my family, hiking all over the state, or deeply nourishing my wellbeing with holistic modalities and exercise. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . D R . K AT I E RICHARDSON PEDIATRICIAN & BUSINESS OWNER FUSION SKIN REHAB

I moved to Colorado with my family in the summer of 1987 just before starting high school at HRHS. As a junior, I chose to be a pediatrician due to my love of science and my experiences working with kids. I continued my education at Colorado College on the prestigious Boettcher Scholarship where I received a BA in Biology. I spent most of my clinical career at Kaiser Permanente Colorado. In 2019, I left to pursue more entrepreneurial ventures including concierge telehealth practice, consulting with healthcare startups and starting Fusion Skin Rehab. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE A YOUNGER WOMAN ENTERING THE WORKFORCE? One of my favorite sayings is “Do what you love; love what you do.” WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH? Kids! When I was seeing pediatric patients full time, there was not a day that went by that one or more of my patients didn’t make me laugh. Now I rely on my daughter and my friends—I am a big believer that laughter is the best medicine.

SHERI KAISER, RN OWNER | FUSION SKIN REHAB & CASA BIANCA BRIDAL BOUTIQUE

My family moved to Highlands Ranch when I was a sophomore in high school. It was at HRHS that I met my now-business partner and dear friend Katie Richardson and my husband, Jason Kaiser. I studied Nursing at University of Miami in Florida, and practiced as a Neonatal Intensive Care Nurse before becoming the Nurse Case Manager and then Business Director at Pinnacol Assurance. I quit corporate America to open my Bridal Shop in 2017, and then Fusion Skin Rehab with Katie. TELL US ABOUT A TIME YOU EXPERIENCED FAILURE AND THE BLESSINGS OF FAILURE. I was a highly recommended internal employee up for a promotion. One decision-maker noted I lacked “executive poise” and I wasn’t promoted. It was the most devastating moment in my professional career. I later realized what she meant: tow the line. I am a passionate truth-teller and don’t sit back with my mouth shut. Ultimately it wasn’t the right fit for me. WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND? I absolutely love to golf. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/H I GH L AN D S R A N C H

J UA N I TA BELLE AUTHOR & HR EXECUTIVE | VOLUNTEER AT CASA

I was born in a small city in Louisiana near my maternal grandfather’s farm. My extended family would regularly gather over gumbo, followed by the Zydeco music my uncles would play on their guitars, accordion, drums, fiddle and keyboard, while the rest danced. We moved to California when I was 8 and did my schooling there. I attended UCLA and obtained my certification in Human Resource Management. In 1994 I moved to Colorado as a result of a job transfer. I knew when I retired, I wanted to help children in some manner. I have been a CASA Advocates4Children volunteer for five years and it is a privilege to be of service and advocate for a child. It has taught me the resilience children have despite their trauma. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF? As a young woman entering the workforce, I lacked self-confidence. I learned it is at the core of who we are and a beacon as we move through life. I was fortunate to have incredible mentors who wanted me to succeed. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS? My on-going pursuit is health, happiness and helping others. During the beginning of COVID I set a goal of writing a novel. It was an amazing process; developing a storyline and creating my characters. I learned that I was more creative than I imagined. In 2021 my book was published. I hope to publish again in 2023.

I have my own photography business, Nikki Brooker Photography. We moved to Colorado in 1996 for my husband’s work and chose Highlands Ranch for the recreation centers and the community. My nonprofit, YANAM2M, was created after two local moms took their own and their children’s’ lives, to ensure every mom feels safe, valued, and accepted. WHO INSPIRES YOU? My kids inspire me to navigate the unknown and lean on those who love me. My 2nd-grade teacher, Mrs. Bowman, inspired me to be a teacher. My dog Brady inspires me to love unconditionally. B E AT R I Z BONNET PRESIDENT & CEO SYNTES LANGUAGE GROUP, INC.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. I am from a town in Uruguay settled by French and Italian immigrants, thus my French last name. At 17, I came to the U.S. as an exchange student and picked up the flute. Back home, I went to the National Conservatory of Music, studying musicology and took private flute lessons from the principal flutists in Uruguay. I went on to perform with the Comedia Nacional. Further career opportunities were limited, partially because we were living under a dictatorship. I left Uruguay in 1982 to study at University of Arkansas and then Rice University. I graduated with a master’s degree in music and had a music and teaching career in Houston. I began to freelance for a Spanish/English translation firm. The owner decided to change careers and wanted to give me his translation company. As a musician, I didn’t think I had the skills to run a company. It took him two or three months to convince me that this was a good opportunity for me. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF? Believe in yourself, be empowered. Surround yourself with people who believe in you. Don’t listen to the naysayers.

FROM RAINY DAY FUNDS TO BUCKET LIST TRIP, FIND WAYS TO INVEST IN YOURSELF

A Smart Woman’s Guide TO INVESTING HER TAX REFUND Do you have a fully funded rainy-day fund? Understand the importance of reserves! Whether it’s home repair, auto repair, a layoff or an emergency pedicure, having cash set aside will ease the financial burden. We recommend three to six months of readily accessible savings. Get out of debt. Love financial freedom more than your credit cards. Pay down or pay off credit cards or unsecured loans. Start with the card with the highest interest rate. Wiping the slate clean on a card or cards is a big psychological win and will encourage you to stay on track until you are out of debt. Reap what you sow. Let your financial gardens grow. If you don’t sow into a retirement plan now, there will be no harvest come retirement. For example, if you take a hypothetical $3,263 tax refund and stash it in a Roth IRA, you could have $32,834 in 30 years, assuming an 8% annual return*. Plus, you’ll pay no federal income tax when you take a qualified withdrawal from a Roth IRA. investor.gov/f inancial-tools-calculators/ calculators/compound-interest-calculator Embrace the future. Invest in your child, grandchild, or yourself. Working with a financial advisor is the best way to understand

all your options, and we can point you in the right direction to help get you started. Consider an education savings account for your kids or grandkids. Have you thought about investing in yourself? Do you want to ascend to the next level? Certifications and college classes can help sharpen your skills. Even if you are not career-oriented, investing in your hobbies can bring added enjoyment. Gifting your refund. Women are givers. You may decide that you don’t need the money. What puts a smile on your face? That may be the appropriate strategy for your refund. Have some fun. Stop putting other things in front of fun. You may take one of our ideas to heart and earmark the lion’s share toward that goal. Save some for yourself. Whether it’s a week-long trip, a day at the spa, or that expensive restaurant you have always wanted to try, it’s good to take care of yourself. These suggestions are just food for thought. Be strategic. Think long-term. And take some time to consider what you might do with your refund or any windfall you may receive. Remember, we are always here to assist you. MINER TEAM. MAJOR RESULTS.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING “Words can’t describe how happy we are with our decision to choose Bob and Carrie as our selling agents! Bob knows the market inside out and his impeccable real estate knowledge, listing skills and documentation delivery processes are second to none. He knows the market, he knows what the sellers want, he knows what the buyers want, he knows what the other agents want and his advice is - bar none - the best in the business (which netted us overall another $25K over asking price). He asked us to be patient when we were concerned with some initial offers, he explained that his listing strategy should pay off and to wait. So we did and boy did it pay off ! Bob and Carrie, we are so thankful for what you did for us!”
