LIFESTYLE LETTER
Live An Artful Life
February 2022 PUBLISHER
Jennifer Starbuck | Jennifer.Starbuck@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR
Sonja Nix | Sonja.Nix@CityLifestyle.com
Welcome to our Local Love Issue, where we spotlight some talented artists and makers in our community. Every year I look forward to working on this theme: It’s a reminder that each one of us can live an artful life. I always obsess over a newfound artist, or plot a personal creative venture. Maybe woodworking? Or dance! Or just finish that gloriously complicated knitting project I started several years ago. A dear friend of mine, Shannon, started her own creative venture at the beginning of the pandemic. On a girls' mountain hut trip, in some evening downtime, one of the women unpacked a tiny tin of paints and created a scene from their shushing earlier in the day. Shannon was inspired. As soon as she got home, she YouTubed watercolor tutorials and learned to paint with a 30 Day Challenge. It wasn’t pretty in the beginning, but she finished her 30 days and discovered a new daily practice that’s lasted for two years. She finds contentment in her miniature paintings, in bringing to life a precious memory from her weekend, of ice skating near her cabin with her 11 year old daughter, or playing with her beloved backyard chickens, or riding past a field of wildflowers on a bike trip. Her painting forces her to focus on the present in an otherwise fast-paced life. And, she says, “it’s helped me appreciate the world in a different way. I don’t look up and see the clouds in the sky as white anymore. I see all the grays, the blues, the pinks.” In this Local Love Issue, we hope you are inspired to live your own artful life. For you, that could mean pursuing a creative hobby, or patronizing a local artist to start a treasured collection. In response to a compliment on her daily minis, my friend Shannon quickly says she's not any more or less talented than anyone else. She quips philosophy from the Grand Master himself, Bob Ross: "Talent is pursued interest. Anything you're willing to practice, you can do." Well, dear readers, here's to practicing an artful life. We'll see you around town.

Healing in Art ARTIST JAMES-ALLEN HOLMES’ UNIQUELY OPTIMISTIC AND JOYFUL STATE FOR HEALING
ARTICLE BY SONJA NIX
Let go of any preconceived notions you have about artists, because James Holmes challenges them. He isn’t foreboding, moody, tortured, nor is he a poor, starving artist. Instead, he is gentle, kind, and most notably, has an joyful exuberance in his work. The Colorado native, Sheridan High School graduate has practiced many forms of artistic work since childhood, including early jobs lettering race cars at Englewood Speedway and creating hand drawn ads for the Yellow Pages. As an adult, he was involved with the artistic community as an 18-year Denver Art Museum Board of Trustee member, and also sits on the board for the Art District on Santa Fe. In 2018, James broke his neck in a horseback riding accident. During his recovery, on the advice of his mom he started painting to pass the time, and found this creative expression to be a form of healing.

“During his recovery he started painting to pass the time, and found this creative expression to be a form of healing”
With no intention of becoming a paid artist, an artist friend convinced him to show his work. It was well received, and he continued to refine his practice as painter. He is an expressive, abstract, visual artist, who rarely sets out with a specific aesthetic in mind and isn’t interested in representing something figurative in his work. For James, the muse behind his art is his own internal state. But unlike artists who express strife, James’ nature is joyful. His responses to strife are generally contemplative and optimistic, and that comes out on the canvas. James typically starts and finishes a work within one sitting. It is the most authentic way to express his current state, which like all of us is fluid and ever-changing. Then his process has him ‘meet the painting’ the next morning or a few days later. He then evaluates and interprets what he was trying to convey. He acknowledges that specific interactions he has with others frequently show up on his canvas. In that way, his work is a real connection to the people around him. But when his work is displayed, he doesn’t provide a narrative of what he is trying to express. He leaves that to the viewer. In an interesting twist of fate, James’ work was displayed in the Centura Parker Adventist Hospital Healing Gallery in

2020, which unbeknownst to the curator, was the very place James was treated after his accident, ultimately leading him down the path of creative expression for healing. His work, born out of a desire to heal, in a place that aids others in healing, during the Covid pandemic, felt like providence. As an artist, James says he has at times felt pressure to be a voice that speaks to social injustice or civil unrest. After grappling with this responsibility, James reconciled that his unique expression of optimism and joy is the greatest contribution he can make. In his view, his role is to share the “the emotional healing and inspiration that art brings.” James’ series titled “Lifeline” is a response to this charge. “The Lifeline is an element in my painting practice which celebrates the unique nature in every one of us, and moments of self-discovery as we embrace our sacred nature and an authentic expression of our humanity.” In a time where optimism and joy seem to be in short supply, James’ work connects us to the quintessential human experience that is hope. He shares his intrinsic gifts, and hopes to inspire others to do the same. It is how we all make the world a better, healing place.

Create an eye-catching centerpiece with your little loves this Valentine’s Day. Follow these easy steps to make memories and beautiful table art.
VALENTINES TREE STEP 1 // Gather your littles for a branch-gathering field trip. Walk around the block or hike your favorite trail, kids love to collect sticks anywhere! Challenge your kiddos to also hunt for leaves and small stones shaped like hearts. Tips & Local Ideas: Try Platte River Park, Roxborough Park, or Chatfield State Park for beautiful scenery and stick collecting, ground finds only! Paint branches with chalk paint, acrylic paint, or leave au-natural. You can even add glitter or paint in unconventional colors. Level Up: Try tightly wrapping yarn around a few of the branches (a glue gun is your friend). STEP 2 // For the base, repurpose a mason jar, painted bucket, cleaned out paint can, or remove the wrapper from a large, canned pantry item. Tips & Local Ideas: Huge baked bean cans work great. Paint the base with chalk or acrylic paint, or use a glue gun and cover with your favorite fabric, wrapping paper, jute, twine, or yarn! Level Up: Paper mâché and then paint once dry.
STEP 3 // Place foam or stability contents inside your main base, drop in branches, top with moss, then proceed to ornament creation. Tips & Local Ideas: Instead of moss, try shredded paper, marbles, hand-picked small rocks, pine needles or sand.
VALENTINE’S ORNAMENTS: If you are a minimalist, create simple ornaments by cutting out heart-shaped felt pieces, gluing two together, and adding ribbon or string in between for hanging. If fancy is your name, proceed directly to next level hand-crafted ornaments. Use photographs or homemade drawings to create heartwarming décor for your tree. Craft foam, felt, or painted cardboard (from all your amazon purchases) work great for homemade ornaments, with or without photos. Spice it up by repurposing baby clothes, towels, other sentimental pieces, or leftover fabric. Cut, wrap, and glue around cardboard or foam for one-of-a-kind ornaments. Tips & Local Ideas: Use heart shaped leaves and glue to each side of the ornament for a great 3D nature inspired ornament. Oven bake clay like Sculpey is a fun, no-mess way to create their very own ornaments for the tree. Level Up: Cut heart shaped fabric and hand stitch inside out, turn right side out, and stuff with foam scraps, pillow filling, or recycled fabric pieces – stitch closed. Prepare to dazzle any visitors.

GOTTA SING MY SONG OLETA ADAMS HEADLINES LONE TREE ARTS CENTER’S 2022 LINEUP ARTICLE BY SONJA NIX
30
M UST SE E | EN TERTA INME NT
“Sing it high, sing it low Sing from deep within my soul. Sing it loud and make it clear, Sing so everyone can hear.” And so she does, and has done for more than 45 years. The name Oleta Adams is likely familiar, she recorded “Woman in Chains” with Tears for Fears, sang “New York State of Mind” with Phil Collins on drums, covered “Get Here” which became an unofficial anthem of the Gulf War, toured with both Phil Collins and Tears for Fears. She is featured on the Elton John/Bernie Taupin tribute album Two Rooms, performing their hit “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me.” Her talents go far beyond popular music, crossing between genres of gospel, soul, R&B, urban, and is an accomplished pianist. She will be performing at the Lone Tree Arts Center on Feb. 18 as the fourth installment of international musician and local resident Gerald Albright’s Lone Tree Sessions series. When we spoke to Gerald Albright in the early phases of the pandemic (see December 2020 issue), his stated goal was to bring more jazz to the southern metro area and Douglas County. And sure enough, he has. “I’m truly excited to have a jazz series at the Lone Tree Art Center. I have the opportunity to bring some of my dear friends to this great venue to perform for some of their biggest fans. It’s a true delight for those who attend, and also serves as a great educational experience,” Gerald says. Gerald and Oleta have been been friends for 30 years. They performed together at jazz festivals throughout those years, including the landmark 1998 Phil Collins Big Band International Tour. “Oleta is one of the unique treasures of our music industry. There’s only one Oleta,” Gerald says. “You know her voice immediately when you hear it, and it transcends to many genres of music. She’s polished and a true joy to work with.” New and longtime fans can find out more about Gerald’s 2022 season at geraldalbright.com/tour. Gerald says, “The 2022 season is shaping up nicely, and I hope to see all of my fans this year.”
Oleta is also on tour in 2022, making up for missed dates in 2020. Find her at oletaadams.com The Lone Tree Arts Center is excited to bring many other acts to the stage in 2022.

Creative Planning believes there’s a richer way to wealth. Their team of CFP professionals, CPAs and attorneys work together to create clear customized plans to maximize your wealth, all in one place. Their award-winning in-house services span a variety of financial disciplines, including comprehensive wealth and investment management, insurance, tax prep, trusts, estate, financial and retirement planning. Founded in Overland Park, KS, they have since branched out across the globe, gaining a national reputation that has earned them numerous prestigious awards, including #1 wealth management firm in America by Barron’s, CNBC and Forbes. President and CEO Peter Mallouk shares his wealth of knowledge with approachable financial advice. Two issues coming together at once inspired the creation of Mallouk’s business. “My dad was a physician frustrated with his financial advisor who sold him products and didn’t really explain things well, and I was an estate attorney that saw a full view of the advisory world and thought there was a better way to deliver the all around experience. Ultimately, that led to Creative Planning offering investments and planning as well as legal and tax advice in a very approachable, consultative way.” Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions.

“Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history. In many ways, it feels like we are just at the starting line.” For more information, visit CreativePlanning.com.

In a time of grief when my father passed away, and then again 7 months later when my mother passed away, both times we used Heflebower services and they took care of everything– even details we never thought about. Their level of service and compassion is extraordinary.” – Kathy –

ARTIST UPDATE: OLIVE MOYA GOES BIG IN HER OWN WORDS, THE ARTIST UPDATES US ON HER SURGING CAREER SINCE WE LAST MET TWO YEARS AGO
36
O UR TOWN | ARTS + CU LTURE
Our February 2020 cover story, artist, muralist, self-described “abstract storyteller,” Olive Moya gives us an update on what the last two years and the pandemic have brought her. At that time, she told us she wished to work on bigger, more complex public spaces so that her work can “be seen and hopefully create meaning for anyone out in the world.” Indeed, she has done that. She has also engaged in some amazing collaborations
with other artists and began using new mediums. Highlands Ranch City Lifestyle looks forward to what happens next for Olive.
OLIVE, IN HER OWN WORDS:
OLIVE MOYA
The pandemic was surprisingly extremely busy for me and many artists I know. I feel like people were craving human connection, stuck looking at the same four walls during lockdown, so art became more important than ever before. I was invited to participate in four different mural festivals last year, which was particularly exciting since everyone was eager to get outside to (safely) do something different and see one another. It was extremely uplifting to connect with the art community in that way when everything else in 2020 was so difficult. During the pandemic, I was able to experiment with collage and use photographs in my work for the first time in years. To translate that to murals, I learned how to wheatpaste and created many large pieces that incorporated both painting and photography. I did this for walls at COATI Uprise in Colorado Springs, Streetwise Mural Festival in Boulder, CRUSH Walls (in collaboration with Alexandrea Pangburn), and the transportation center in Vail. This year I experimented with a few new mediums; I was asked to create an animated piece for Night Lights Denver that was projected on the Daniels & Fisher clock tower, collaborated with fashion designer Amy Lisojo, worked on sculptures in my studio, and teamed up with Ice Sculptor Paul Wertin to design the Winterfest Ice Sculptures in Vail. Earlier this year, I partnered with my friend Emily Hope Dobkin of Betterish to create a proposal for a mural that was chosen for The Denver Art Museum’s newly renovated Martin Building. The concept was rooted in community engagement and the photos used to wheatpaste the background were sourced from people here in Colorado and beyond. It will be up for the next three years and we’ll continue to create programming that gets people involved with art and their community.

THE JOY OF REMODELING SINCE 1997...
FBC Remodel has aimed to transform the remodeling process. The goal? Stress-free construction with innovative custom design. Patrick Condon, Founder and CEO of FBC Remodel, began his vision 24 years ago, building basements out of the back of a work van. Today, he’s seen his initial dream — the Finished Basement Company, develop into a full-service award-winning interior remodeling company, FBC Remodel that brings that vision to life for kitchens, bathrooms, whole homes and more. Throughout name changes and new services being developed, the vision has always remained the same - a remodeling company that builds more than just beautiful spaces, it builds joy. “I believe what we truly offer our homeowners is an experience that lasts,” said Condon, “We believe in finding the joy in everything we do and creating relationships that last the test of time.” Today, FBC Remodel is known by their clients for their unique design-build process and the quality of their remodels. In fact, 40 percent of FBC Remodel clientele is made up of repeat or referral clients. Stephen Franklin, an FBC Remodel homeowner said: “I like the fact that at the very beginning, the team was very thorough at explaining the entire process from design, to the material selection, the execution. Everything was just as planned. We werevery pleased with every aspect of the project!” FBC Remodel is currently offering free virtual design consultations to start your home remodel today.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING “Words can’t describe how happy we are with our decision to choose Bob and Carrie as our selling agents! Bob knows the market inside out and his impeccable real estate knowledge, listing skills and documentation delivery processes are second to none. He knows the market, he knows what the sellers want, he knows what the buyers want, he knows what the other agents want and his advice is - bar none - the best in the business (which netted us overall another $25K over asking price).
