Those small, individual differences are crucial for pediatric anesthesiologists like Tessa Mandler, MD, and Alan Bielsky, MD. They’re crucial not only for determining the right types, combinations and doses of anesthetics to keep a child asleep during surgery, but also for dispelling a child’s fears beforehand and keeping them comfortable afterwards.

“This is all we do, day in, day out,” says Dr. Mandler. “We take care of kids.” That care covers everything from how kids will respond to medications to how they’ll cope with the stress of surgery to anticipating how they’re feeling when the patient is too young to communicate that. It’s part of their pediatric specialty training — which adds about two to three years onto their medical education. It takes some creativity, too.

“We had a case a couple of weeks ago where we had to keep a child calm for a couple of minutes,” Dr. Bielsky recalls. “And we could have used a sedative, but that could have had some side effects. So we went directly to the songs from Moana. “I’m not a great singer, but I know my songs from Moana.” Those small touches — combined with precision teamwork between anesthesiologists, surgeons, nurses, therapists and many others — add up consistently to the best pediatric surgical outcomes in the region. Making it Look Easy THE FIVE MEN ARRIVED AT ELK RIDGE PARK IN CASTLE PINES ONE AFTER THE OTHER ON A WARM, SUNNY MAY MORNING. They greeted and formally introduced themselves, then got right down to the business at hand: a photoshoot for this month's main feature. During the course of the shoot, I found myself grappling with my utter lack of know-how in managing a group of just men—there's apparently a trick to it—and serenading them with silly songs to get a smile for the camera isn't one of them! Fortunately, the aforementioned men are June's Movers + Shakers, and completely capable of making things happen, come what may. Our June issue contains several articles to keep the men enthused, including our Hot Spot, which introduces an establishment that should go on every man's bucket list, where they can get their hair trimmed and unwind with a good drink (p. 26). Make-A-Wish Event in Backcountry Giving Backcountry kicked off their inaugural event by partnering with Make-A-Wish Colorado for a Derby Party on May 5, followed by an evening in Solstice Park on May 10 (pictured), to grant two-year-old Casen his wish of going to Disney World. Casen suffers from VACTERL syndrome, a disease that affects many body systems. More than $7500 was raised for Casen to travel to Disney World on October 23.

FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH WITH JALAPEÑO SLAW INGREDIENTS (SANDWICH) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Cayenne pepper, to taste

CHANGE UP THE FLAVOR BY CREATING DIFFERENT SLAWS. YOU CAN DO THIS BY ADDING DIFFERENT SEASONING AND HERBS TO THE MAYO.

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne pepper together in a shallow bowl. 2. Fill your skillet with oil to about 1-inch deep and heat to 350 degrees. 3. Coat your chicken breasts in the flour and seasoning mixture, then carefully place them into the heated oil. 4. Cook until golden brown with an internal temperature of 165 degrees. 5. Lightly toast your sesame seed bun, then top with pickles, fried chicken breast and slaw to taste.

CARNE ASADA STREET TACOS WITH AVOCADO RELISH INGREDIENTS (TACOS) 1/2 red onion, coarsely chopped

MARINATE THE STEAK IN THE REFRIGERATOR FOR UP TO 24 HOURS FOR EXTRA FLAVOR.

3 cloves garlic, peeled 2 tablespoons adobo sauce 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons dried oregano Salt and pepper, to taste Choice of steak Fresh flour or corn tortillas Lime, optional

DIRECTIONS 1. Blend the red onion, garlic, adobo sauce, olive oil and seasoning in a food processor or blender, adding water as needed until smooth. 2. Marinate the steak in the mixture for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling. 3. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large grill pan and add the steak, cooking to desired doneness. Let rest in a foil tent for 10 minutes then chop into small pieces and assemble tacos as desired.

DIRECTIONS 1. Add the cheese, milk and butter to a saucepan and heat over low heat until the cheese is melted. You can add additional milk based on how thin you want your sauce to be. 2. When cheese is melted, remove from heat and stir in chiles and seasoning to taste. 3. Pour over crispy fries and top with bacon, caramelized onions and herbs as desired.

CHANGE IT UP Use the cheese sauce as a base, but consider changing up the toppings for unique flavors. Ideas include cajun fries topped with andouille sausage, cajun shrimp and olive tapenade; loaded baked potato fries topped with sour cream, cheddar, bacon and scallions; or buffalo chicken fries topped with buffalo chicken, ranch, blue cheese crumbles and chopped celery. the Author Josh Weidmann Josh Weidmann, author of four books and senior pastor at Grace Chapel, chuckles as he says that sometimes church members still call him “little Joshie”—Grace is the church he attended as a child. “I’m a writer called to a pastor’s life,” Weidmann says. He’s the father of four young children with another due in August. “My best days are when I get to write,” he says, and you’ll find him doing so while drinking a good cup of coffee—he’s also an accomplished brewer and latte artist. “It’s through my writing that I communicate God’s truth,” Weidmann says. the Tech Guy Bob Ibison Bob Ibison, a trained geologist, had recently started working for the federal government when he heard about a new opportunity involving telecommunications. Thus began his 31-year career with the U.S. Geological Survey as a network engineer. “I lived the wild rise of the internet,” Ibison says. Now retired, Ibison relishes time—and laughter—with his wife and two adult children. An avid long-distance hiker, this summer he’ll tackle the only section of the Pacific Crest Trail he’s yet to hike—Lake Tahoe to Canada. “I love the peace, beauty and solitude of hiking,” he says. “Time slows down.”

the Special Ed Teacher Steve M. Berninzoni Steve M. Berninzoni coached football for years and loved his role as a mentor. It motivated him to shift careers and become a special education teacher. Now in his tenth year of teaching at Highlands Ranch High School, he’s so grateful. “Teaching is my passion. I do everything I can to ensure my students aren’t left behind,” Berninzoni says. This desire prompts him to hire students at the company he owns, 5280 Community Waste Solutions. Berninzoni is also the father of four teenagers. “If you do right by children, they will do right by the community as adults,” he says. 24

the Language A rt s T e a c h e r Brad Odice Brad Odice, language arts teacher and student senate adviser at Highlands Ranch High School, credits his fourth grade teacher as the inspiration to pursue a career in teaching. Now in his thirteenth year, Odice has found his niche teaching creative writing. “I like to draw stories out of my students. Stories that maybe they’re dying to tell or that are painful,” Odice says. He and his fiancé have a 10-year-old daughter with another due in October. “If I were to dream about a legacy, it would be that I’ve helped my students and family tap into their passions,” Odice says.
