Dogs and Brews, no Back-to-School Blues

ugust in Colorado is a funny thing. It’s dead in the middle of summer (summer doesn't end till September 22), yet we find ourselves getting the kids back to school and refocusing on work obligations that in other parts of the country are left to the post-Labor-Day realm. Time to hit Pause on summer (or should I say, ahem, Paws.) Let’s savor these “dog days of summer.” Let’s grab a beer - a really tasty, local beer - and spend quality time with our fur-ever friends. Heck, we can even combine the two! Our August issue offers where to grab a beer with Fido in the ‘burbs (“Pup Crawl,” p. 16). And as a multi-species pet owner, I (we) were thrilled to “throw a bone” to cats in “Coffee and Calicos,” (p.12). We visited one local couple who created a backyard Nirvana in “Go Big and Stay Home,” (p.22). And in “Parting Thoughts” we shared the best way we know of for surviving backto-school shopping in August. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we enjoyed making it! t the cat café, the question is not one of “cats or dogs,” but rather one that

draws from our love for animals in general. This theme is concurrent in mostly everyone, so why not combine two of the loves of Coloradans? Coffee and animals. Sana Hamelin, owner of the Denver Cat Company, has successfully accomplished this with the cat café, where people from all walks of life can come in for a piping mug of tea or coffee, curl up on one of the couches with their favorite books or friends and play with any of the multiple affectionate felines under her foster care. Although some may question the quirky dispositions and “attitudes” of cats, Hamelin negates this by working directly with rescue groups who provide her with healthy animals

that would fit in with a multitude of environs: namely a public café-type setting as well as a home setting. “We foster cats who would do well in our environment—they're outgoing or social, they like people, they don’t like being in a cage, and they do well with other cats,” Hamelin says. The cat café is by no means inviting to only one type of person. All are welcome to enjoy the company of our furry friends, and who doesn’t love a coffee or pastry break (or both) during that hectic midweek grind?
