What makes a house a home?

read once that a cat makes a house a home. While I do have a cat that pretty much never leaves the house, I’m just not willing to give her that much credit. It feels so cliched to say it’s a family that makes a house a home, but for me “home” is felt in those corners of the house with tangible evidence of our lives together -- the couches where we watch movies, the kitchen where we cook, eat and talk about the day, the mélange of shoes by the front door, and the “catchall” table in the entryway that plays host to keys, phones and sunglasses.

Whatever “home” means to you, we hope you’ll enjoy our annual Home Issue! Our writers, editors and photographers had so much fun rounding up beautiful, comfortable trends for the home. We love the thoughtful upgrades that made one suburban home really stand out from the rest in our story “Fresh Perspective” (p. 24). n honor of Spring’s imminent arrival, this week’s icon of design is…Eero Saarinen’s Tulip tables and chairs! Crazy name, crazy furniture. This guy is a little confusing, as his daddy-o, Eliel

Saarinen was also a famous designer and director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where Saarinen eventually taught as well (I know you must be getting sick of hearing about that place, but I swear–it’s a good name to know!). But I do know you’ve seen his tulip tables, and you probably recognize his chairs as well! So, what’s the story behind these Mod pedestal pieces? Saarinen was born and raised in Finland and emigrated to America with his parents when he was just 13. After studying sculpture as a young man in Paris, he trained as an architect at Yale. Fun fact alert: Saarinen’s buildings and monuments are all around us! Not only did he design the St. Louis Golden Arch, but the TWA terminal at JFK and Dulles International Airport.

Said to have been inspired by a street sign, they were formed from an aluminum base and fiberglass shell. Although Saarinen wanted the pieces to be manufactured from a single material, plastic hadn’t yet been developed in 1958 that was strong enough for the design. Plastics had become incredibly popular in furniture design of the 1960s, serving as an antidote to the hard, cold surfaces of Bauhaus modernism. Rather obviously, plastic also lent itself much more easily to organic sculptural forms than, say, tubular steel. And it was cheap. Win, win. Saarinen liked to say that his tulip tables and chairs cleaned up “the slum of legs” that supported basically all tables and chairs. I’d have to say I agree with him–his tulip tables are lovely in their simplicity and clean lines, don’t you think?

e’re about the living,” says Doug Flin, lead architect and one of the founding partners of Seven Stones Botanical Gardens Cemetery, located on 35 pristine acres off Titan Road in Roxborough Park. At once a park, a garden and a gathering place for families, Seven Stones has thrown out the old rules on how families memorialize their loved ones. “We’re taking an untraditional approach to meeting families’ needs at the most difficult time in their lives,” says Flin. “We wanted to create a comfortable environment where families who have lost loved 14

ones can sit, turn on the fire pit, listen to the water, cry, laugh, tell stories, really connect with their loved one. Whatever that means to them, that’s what we’re about. We’re not a drab, scary place.” Indeed they are not. Comfortable seating, babbling brooks, walking paths and spectacular views are just a few of the ways Seven Stones has created a serene, inviting place for family reflection and togetherness. “We’re very different from the traditional offerings you find at other cemeteries,” says Flin. “We have families who

might want a green burial, or perhaps they want to have an especially celebratory gathering, where they can laugh, cry, drink bourbon. They come with bumper stickers and markers for the casket.” Seven Stones also sees families whose loved one has been cremated, but they haven’t been ready to part. “We help families who may have had to make difficult decisions at the end when they were exhausted. The family starts to have mental gymnastics and ask, ‘Did we do enough?’ We can help commemorate that person’s life in so many ways, perhaps in the form of art, sculpture or a garden.”

ith the holidays long behind me and spring staring me in the face, it was time to rejuvenate. I’d enjoyed massages and facials in the past, but I wanted something more; I wanted to recapture a sense of wellness. A few hours at the Highlands Ranch Massage Green Spa sounded like the perfect ticket. I had never been there, but through the grapevine, I had heard they provided a triad of services that complemented one another. I scheduled myself for a European spa facial, a therapeutic massage, and an infrared sauna session. My appointment began with a hydrating facial. Lying on the heated table, I welcomed each mysterious substance slathered onto my face—some were cool, some creamy, some tingly. My aesthetician explained the purpose of each treatment as it was applied. The star of the facial was a wonderful-smelling raspberry and peach enzyme treatment, a deep exfoliator with anti-aging elements created to soften skin and reduce inf lammation. I checked the mirror when we were done: my face felt clean, and my skin looked more even-toned and alive! The massage was nestled between the facial and infrared treatment. A warm-up Swedish massage laid the foundation for deep-tissue work by my myotherapist—that’s professional-speak for “massage therapist.” Since it had been too long since my last massage, my tight muscles at first berated, then thanked me for the therapeutic workout. Up next: the infrared sauna therapy. Its wonders began with solitary me time inside the cedar booth. I took advantage of the iPad on the wall (equipped with wifi) and cool water while waves of short, mid and far infrared emitted from the heaters. It felt like a warm spring day — except this spring day provided therapeutic anti-aging, detoxifying, and pain-relieving benefits! I melted into the open road of time to simply read and relax. By the end of my appointment at Massage Green Spa, I was patting myself on the back for taking the break to gain the wellness I sought. The world now seemed more manageable and uncluttered. It was easily the best decision I’d made for myself in a long time!

n a neighborhood development, it’s common for each home to look quite a bit like its

next-door neighbor. That’s why the thoughtful personal touches make such a big statement at 3921 Timeless Drive in Castle Rock. “There are a lot of homes nearby that are of like quality, but the previous owners did a really fantastic job executing some of the upgrades,” says realtor Josh Behr. Those upgrades, including hickory hardwood floors, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances, take this home a step above the rest on the block. That’s not to say the upgrades made all the difference: The home’s architecture provided a solid foundation on which to build. “It’s a fantastic home, layout wise,” Josh says. “The house has tremendous light and volume.” An open floor plan connects the spacious family room, dining space, and kitchen, making the first floor breathable and livable. Vaulted ceilings and generously sized windows make the space feel large, and in warmer months, the deck extends the living space outdoors. The openness continues upstairs: A roomy loft — perfect for a kids’ playroom or lounge area — greets you at the top of the stairs. The master suite feels expansive, with a spacious bedroom, luxury bathroom, dual closets and a laundry space. The two other second-floor bedrooms are connected by a Jack-and-Jill bathroom. From top to bottom, Lisa describes it as “a charming home with youthful finishes.” And that’s something you don’t find around every corner.
