Feeling Good, Being Well
I
t seems everywhere we turn we hear about wellness, but what does it really mean?
A current study underway at the Stanford Prevention Research Center is setting out to learn just that. Their WELL initiative will study more than 30,000 people over many years to identify what factors help people maintain health and wellness. So far, researchers have interviewed more than 100 people from different ethnic backgrounds in Santa Clara County. When asked about times they recall as particularly high or low in terms of their own well-being, they all responded within 10 different “domains” of well-being:

“It’s just a natural link. I just highlight it more because I have the skill set to do that.” In addition to the diverse menu of yoga classes you might find on the website of a traditional yoga studio, Karen offers sessions in MindBody Therapy for Adults, Yoga 101, Private Yoga Sessions, Aromatherapy Bracelet Sessions and Mala Bead Consultations. “I’ve always known that our bodies are affected by what goes on in our mental health system as much our mental health system is affected by our bodies,” says Karen. “To offer effective treatment we need to be addressing both simultaneously. We can’t put them in silos — they’re not exclusive of each other. I offer both, and together at the same time.
“I THOUGHT GOING FOR A LONG RUN WAS THE SOLUTION TO EVERYTHING.” “I always knew I was going to do some kind of counseling profession, even as a youngster.” In high school Karen got heavily into fitness and exercise, while also suffering depression. ”I noticed that when I exercised I could control my depression. When I didn’t, I couldn’t.” Karen knew heading into college that she would double-major in Exercise Science and Psychology and that she would combine the two in her career. “I used to think that going for a long run was the solution to everything,” says Karen. “That if i could just get people fit enough to do that, we’d have no depression.” At the time, not a lot of people stateside knew what yoga was all about. “Any idea I had about yoga was not what it became for me. Yoga was this weird thing that weird people did.” Karen learned about yoga when she was told by her boss at her first job that she had to teach it. “I got a video and a book and I studied and I prepared a class. I fell in love. I could not believe the effect it had on my wellbeing.”
“YOGA TEACHES YOU ABOUT YOU.”
Karen is passionate about teaching. “Yoga teaches us all these cool things. Did you know your breath can create this effect energetically for you? Let me teach you how to do that. Let me give you the time and the space to feel that so you can access this. “I love helping people to understand and know about their bodies. That’s within you. It’s not outside of you. That’s your birthright — your ability to meditate, to move your body—that improves every system within your body. 22

“When they're stressed in line in the grocery store, losing patience, they can tap into mountain pose and energetically feel the peace and calm and stability. They can feel the benefit of letting go. That calms their anxiety and stress so when they go out into traffic they’re not already loaded up that things aren’t going their way. It’s a guiding back to the mind-body connection." FARM + FRESH + FALL
A GUIDE TO THE BEST FALL FARMERS MARKETS ARTICLE MEG SIMON | PHOTOGRAPHY RAEMI VERMIGLIO
W
ith the fall comes many good things - relief from the summer heat, a chance to watch the aspens shift from vibrant green to fiery yellow, shorter days and a sense
of things becoming a little bit cozier. But fall can also be a time of hurriedness - kids are heading back to school, and languid summer days at home or adventure-packed weeks of vacation become a distant memory. Fall’s beauty can easily be swept aside by the hustle and bustle of “getting back into the swing of things,” and, for that, farmers markets are the perfect antidote. More than just being a place to pick up fresh, flavored-filled tomatoes or herbal, homemade soaps, a farmers market beckons one to slow down and encourages exploration. Neighbors run into neighbors, new foods are tasted, and muchneeded time with family and friends. Whatever fall looks like for you, whether it’s a time of relaxation now that the kids are finally back in school, or a time of running from place to place in an insane attempt to get everything finished, take time to visit a farmers market. More than anything, a visit to a farmers market can be a reminder of the vast beauty and potential the season has to offer.

Local’s Choice
Aging Gracefully With Dr. Katia Meier ARTICLE ROBIN BOND
WHAT’S YOUR PHILOSOPHY ABOUT LOOKING AND FEELING GOOD AS WE AGE?
It’s easier to look beautiful when you’re in good health. Optimizing health means optimizing appearance. Case in point, if your hormones aren’t balanced, you have a lack of estrogen or you have too much testosterone, you could experience unwanted hair growth, pimples or lack of collagen in your face. Is your TSH (thyroid) within the healthy range? We know thyroid issues can cause a host of physical and aesthetic problems, from dry skin and hair loss to difficulty losing weight. The answers - and true healing - come with understanding the underlying cause. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON AGING ISSUES YOU HEAR ABOUT?
Unwanted weight gain, and loss of hormones and its consequences. On the aesthetic side, I hear a lot of complaints about loss of collagen and the sagging skin that can result.
"My goal is to help patients age healthy and gracefully, from both the inside out and the outside in.”
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WAYS YOU DIAGNOSE AND TREAT THESE ISSUES?
Depending on the aging issue you’re concerned about, we take a look at lifestyle, hormone and nutrition status, thyroid condition, etc. A lot plays into the picture of perfect health. Usually there’s a a reason for a medical issue. When we find it, we can treat it. Regarding the top aesthetic issues we hear about, we treat hormone imbalances with bio-identical hormones, and we have several effective medical options for weight loss. We can also help keep collagen in the skin. We offer collagen simulation through a number of treatments, from Ulthera and Radiesse to RF micro-needling and CO2 fractional skin resurfacing. And we can help improve the appearance of pigmented lesions with photofacials, peels and professional skin care. WHAT ABOUT PLASTIC SURGERY?
You do not have to go under the knife if you start early enough! There are so many low-risk, no downtime options, from restorative skin treatments to specialized anti-aging treatments, that can help turn back the clock one minute at a time. Plus, non-surgical treatments generally provide the most natural look. Dr. Meier is board certified in Family Medicine with Obstetrics, educated in naturopathic medicine, and board certified in anti-aging medicine, which is about reversing and preventing disease and the restoration of health and beauty.
