elcome to beautiful October and our Health & Fitness issue! No offense to all the hip-and-fit grandmas out there, but if I had a nickel for every fitness-trend-diet-craze article I’ve read in my life, well, I’d have a lot of nickels. This isn't that: I was amazed by how much I learned this month as we looked closely at what whole-body-and-mind wellness means and the importance of this thing called “community.”

That word—community—came up in almost every story we covered this month, from our story about Outlaw Yoga and the sense of community we all crave, to our fitness-technology review that revealed how the most popular and beneficial fitness-tracking devices infuse a feeling of togetherness into our workouts. We learned how naturopathic medicine seeks to make us well by finding what’s missing in our lives (hint: it may be a longing for connection and community). And we explored the kind of community that happens when you spread out a picnic blanket on a sun-kissed afternoon in our “Cozy Fall Picnics” photo shoot.

All this talk about community was especially meaningful for the team here at Highlands Ranch Lifestyle, as “Inspiring Community” is both our tagline and our mission. Attaining that feeling of connection and oneness in the hamlet we call home can lead to such greater quality of life for all of us!

ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN TOY DRIVE For more than 30 years, Advocates for Children CASA has served abused and neglected children in Colorado’s 18th Judicial District (Arapahoe, Douglas, Lincoln and Elbert counties). CASA volunteers are trained to represent the best interests of children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and neglect. Each volunteer strives to ensure that every child dreams, thrives and grows in a safe and permanent environment. Through the strength of these volunteers, Advocates for Children CASA advocates for more than 850 children annually.

Every holiday season, Advocates for Children CASA request the help of our community to ensure that our children are blessed with gifts to open around the holidays. We ask that each donor spend between $25–35 per child and we are also seeking donors who are willing to sponsor a family. When sponsoring families, we ask that

IN GR EDIEN TS // 2 cups unsweetened organic almond milk // 1 cup organic pumpkin puree // 2 tbsp. almond butter // 1 tsp. vanilla extract // 1/4 cup agave nectar (or maple syrup, honey or coconut sugar syrup) // 2 tsp. pumpkin spice (or make your own with 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. nutmeg, 1/4 tsp. ginger, pinch ground clove, pinch allspice) // 1/2 cup chia seeds // Optional Topping: pepitas, chopped walnuts or pecans, shredded coconut and drizzle of honey

IN STRU C TIONS 1. Pour one cup of the almond milk into your glass bowl and add pumpkin puree. Whisk until the puree is completely dissolved into the milk.

2. Add almond butter, vanilla, agave and pumpkin spice and whisk until incorporated.

3. Add remaining almond milk and begin adding in the chia seeds whisking to incorporate.

4. Let stand for five minutes, and then whisk for one to two minutes to incorporate the chia throughout.

5. Place in the refrigerator for 15 minutes, then remove and whisk again.

6. Chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to allow the pudding to

L

iz Holzemer is an author, writer, speaker and survivor of a baseball-size brain tumor know as a meningioma.Given the scary diagnosis by her doctor when she was 32 years old, Liz called on her already-quirky sense of humor to brave the journey back to recovery and write her award-winning book, “Curveball: When Life Throws You A Brain Tumor.” Liz shares what she learned from the illness she considers a " bizarre gift on numerous levels."

Every day I have an opportunity to alleviate the fears and feelings of hopelessness that a newly diagnosed patient experiences when told, “You have a meningioma.” It's my way of paying forward what I wished I’d had in the eight days I was stumbling around dazed and confused prior to my surgeries.

I’ve always had a quirky sense of humor, and I must say that my neurosurgeons sure did a number tightening up the bolts during surgery.

Too bad they couldn’t have done a little lifting and tucking while they were at it! Brain tumors and brain surgery are heavy, heavy stuff. I’ve found that a healthy dose of brain tumor humor is a great equalizer

Facing brain surgery—or any devastating illness for that matter—is no easy task, but if you can laugh at yourself, it certainly lightens up the recovery load.

I’m generally an upbeat person. I am a Leo after all! It’s a cliché, but I don’t sweat the small stuff. I’m alive, and every day I have a reason to make an impact. I truly believe this is my purpose for being granted a second chance at life. I do go through phases where

my tank is completely empty, and I’ve learned the hard way to not to push my limits and to embrace naps when I hit that proverbial wall. It was a painful process, but I eventually accepted that I can’t change the fact I had a meningioma, so I continue to focus on what am I going to do with it in a positive way. I’ve thrown my pity parties. Next!

For a period of time, I went through the stage I believe most of us do after a major life-altering event—the "why me?" What is my purpose? What am I supposed to do with this? It took years of healing before I truly grasped my new-found calling.

My best life lesson, in general, is I only had to wait 32 years to learn how to break out of my genre and comfort zone. No one asks for a brain tumor but, for me, it’s been a bizarre gift on numerous levels. I take greater risks. I figure if I can survive having my head carved into twice, I can share my story with large audiences; approach any editor, even if I get the door slammed in my face; maybe finally learn how to dive or drive a stick shift!

It’s also allowed me to use my writing to be a voice and convey the message that we are our own best advocates. This is especially true for women who put everyone and everything else in their lives at the top of their “TO DO” lists. We need to change our thinking and give ourselves permission to put ourselves first. That’s not being selfish; it’s ensuring we take care of ourselves. Otherwise, we are useless to everyone else. You have to be your own advocate because no will else will go to bat for you. We have to trust that inner voice each of us possesses. It’s a lesson anyone can grasp and apply to his or her life, regardless of the situation.

Liz is the founder of MeningiomaMommas.org, a 24/7 online non-profit support group she created after surviving a meningioma brain tumor. Her organization has raised $277,952 to date for meningioma-specific research, and she has had numerous media appearances including the Discovery Health Channel, TODAY Show, Denver’s ABC, CBS and NBC, USA Today, Woman’s Day, Woman’s World, 5280, the Denver Post, Rocky Mountain News, and numerous small town rags. It’s also a book about finding yourself. All three of the protagonists—mostly the teens—learn a lot about who they are through a series of misadventures on the way. It’s also a story about romantic love and familial love. No spoilers on that score.

In short, I LOVE this book. As you would expect from Brendan Kiely, the writing is exquisite and the characters are perfectly drawn.
