September Style
September 2026 PUBLISHER
Lynn Bowles | lynn.bowles@citylifestyle.com M AN AG I N G E D I TO R
“And the heat felt like spotlights, in the heart of a hot summer night…” Hot Summer Nights, Walter Egan Hello Hendersonville, and welcome to September! Some folks may enjoy the long days and hot nights of summer, but I for one am glad to see things begin to cool down with the return of autumn. I can’t wait for lower humidity, changing leaves, school activities, and of course, football. As the gateway between summer and fall, September is a time of transition. All throughout the month things are changing. For example, we gradually, and perhaps a bit reluctantly, exchange the swimsuits and flip flops of summer for the sweaters and long sleeves more suitable for fall weather. Furthermore, we trade in long days on the lake for cool, crisp nights out by our fire pits with friends and family. Times change – and so do styles. At Hendersonville Lifestyle, we embrace the new opportunities that come with the change of seasons. This month, our September issue is focused on all things style. Style means something different to everyone, and we all have our own ideas of what is and is not stylish. However, our style choices are reflected in our daily lives, from wardrobes to autos to homes. There is no right or wrong – we are just expressing our individuality. This month as we hurdle toward fall, we bring you several articles about how style is being manifested across the 37075 and beyond. First, we visit with a local community theater company that has been entertaining the City by the Lake with comedies, dramas and musicals for over 30 years. Next, we drop in on Hendersonville’s premier art gallery to see how they are honoring veterans and celebrating America’s 250th birthday in patriotic style. Continuing, we take a look at some trendy dorm essentials that can help college students get off to a good start of the new school year. As always, our City Scene and Business Monthly sections will bring you the latest news about many of the great things happening in our City by the Lake. We are proud of our September issue, and we invite you all to come along with us as we explore the world of style across the Ville. Keep smiling and styling, Hendersonville!

Lights... Action... Style! HENDERSONVILLE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER OFFERS COMMUNITY THEATER WITH A FLAIR Hendersonville is renowned for having one of the most vibrant arts scenes around. Along with its live musical performances and elaborate art exhibitions, Hendersonville is also the home of a thriving community theater group – the Hendersonville Performing Arts Company (HPAC). For over three decades, HPAC has thrilled audiences with live productions of musicals, dramas and comedies, as well as training future thespians through its education programs. Recently, Hendersonville Lifestyle sat down with HPAC Executive Director Angela Pasquini to find out more about the organization and its upcoming season of shows. WHAT MAKES HPAC AND COMMUNITY THEATER SO SPECIAL? “For over 30 years, HPAC has brought people together through live theater. Each season, we provide local artists, musicians, designers and techies a place to actually use their talents. Every single show you see is built by volunteers who are doing this because they love it, not because they’re getting paid. So, when the curtain goes up, you’re watching an entire community show up for each other.” HOW MANY SHOWS DOES HPAC PERFORM DURING A SEASON? “At HPAC, we stay busy. We produce five mainstage shows each season, along with three summer youth productions and a wide variety of classes, improv nights, cabarets, workshops and community performances. Honestly, something is happening at HPAC every month.”
Costumes and lighting are key to this scene from Mamma Mia.

HOW DO YOU SELECT YOUR PRODUCTIONS? “Everything starts with our directors. Every year we put out a call and basically ask them, ‘okay, what’s the show you’ve always wanted to direct?’ And then they pitch us their show, their vision and why it matters to them. Next,
our production committee reviews those pitches and starts piecing the season together like a puzzle. We’re usually shooting for three musicals and two plays, but honestly, it’s less about the math and more about balance.” DO YOU HAVE A REGULAR ACTING TROUPE, OR DO YOU HAVE OPEN CASTING FOR YOUR SHOWS? Every show starts with open auditions. Each production is a new group of people coming together to create something special, and anyone has the opportunity to be part of it. HOW LONG DO YOU REHEARSE EACH SHOW BEFORE YOU GO LIVE? “Most productions rehearse for about eight weeks before opening night. Musicals tend to need that whole runway because there’s just so much going on – music, choreography, staging, costumes and all the tech stuff has to come together. Plays can sometimes get away with a little less time. It just depends on the show.” HOW DO YOU DESIGN YOUR STAGES AND PROPS TO MATCH THE ARTISTIC STYLE OF EACH SHOW? “It all starts with the story. Once we’ve got a director, they pull together the whole production team including set designer, costume designer, props master, etc. Everybody works together to land on one shared vision for the show. We always ask ourselves, ‘what do we want the audience to feel the second they walk into that theater?’ And from there, every style choice is in service of telling that story. HOW DO YOU ACQUIRE YOUR COSTUMES? “Our costumes come from anywhere and everywhere. We’ve built up a huge costume collection over the years, so step one is always ‘shopping’ our own stock first. After that it’s thrifting, borrowing, renting and sometimes making pieces from scratch. We are always trying to find the right look for every character without blowing the budget.”
Patriotic costuming fits this scene in Holiday Inn.
"Our job is basically to make sure the whole look of the show is telling the story right alongside the actors." - Angela Pasquini

"HPAC is where people find talents they didn't even know they had, where kids build real confidence, where adults get to reconnect with a creative side they may have put away years ago and where families end up making memories together without even trying." Classic Agatha Christie characters come to life with period costuming.
HOW DO YOU MATCH THE SHOWS PRODUCTION STYLE TO ITS GENRE? “The story always comes first. Every show has its own personality, and everything design-wise has to serve that. Dramas, comedies, and musicals all move and feel differently. So, the scenery, costumes, lighting and the tiny details all work together to build that world for the audience. WHICH SHOWS ARE YOU GOING TO BE PRODUCING DURING THE 2026-27 SEASON? “We’re kicking things off with Jekyll & Hyde, followed by The Secret Garden and then Barefoot in the Park. Next spring we will feature Dial M for Murder, and we’re closing out the season with Sister Act. So, we’ve basically got a little bit of everything in there – mystery, romance, comedy, and a big feel-good musical to send everyone off happy.” Hendersonville Performing Arts Company 260 West Main Street, Suite 204, Hendersonville, TN 37075 615.826.6037 HPACtn.com Simple setting but clever staging make this scene from Merrily We Roll Along work.

I love family-style meals such as a crab boil this time of year. The food is the star of the show and a vital part of the tablescape – decor optional! Additional elements included here are a large paper-sail, light blue taper candles, a few large flowers, and heavy white rope as nautical accents. You can also use other elements such as large seashells, coral or seaglass. Use whatever you have on hand that nods to the sea.

Fill a large stock pot halfway with cold water. Season with lemon peels, bay leaves, black pepper, red pepper flakes, Old Bay Seasoning, and garlic powder. MONTHAVEN ARTS & CULTURAL CENTER HOSTS EXHIBIT HONORING VETERANS WITH STYLE ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICK MURRAY

From Aug. 1 through Sept. 6, the Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center (MACC), in conjunction with the Park West Foundation, is celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with its 8th Annual Veterans Art Exhibition titled ‘For the Love of Liberty.’ The elaborate display features paintings by renowned abstract artist Tim Yanke as well as ornate jackets created by legendary fashion designer of the stars, Manuel Cuevas. All of Tim’s featured paintings feature creative takes on the American flag. He was inspired to create his American flag series after the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Known as “Yanke Doodles,” the paintings feature a blend of alternate colors
that represent different cultures, communities and events in America. Several of the paintings incorporate military service ribbon themes as a tribute to the nation’s veterans. Manuel’s contributions to the exhibition are a series of custom designed jackets depicting events, locations and images that are representative of each state. Over time, he created jackets for each of the 50 U.S. states, but the current display at the MACC concentrates on jackets representing the original 13 colonies. In addition to the works of Tim and Manuel, the exhibition also includes contributions by local artist Don Olea CONTINUED >

which depict key moments in the founding of America. There are also several pieces of art created by veterans who participate in the MACC’s “Between the Lines” healing arts program. The exhibition kick off began with a special artist VIP meet and greet event with the artists to celebrate the grand opening of the exhibition on Saturday night, Aug. 1. The following evening, the celebration continued at Bagsby Ranch with the annual Boots & BBQ fundraiser that supports “Between the Lines.” This year’s Boots & BBQ event featured a buffet dinner, a musical performance by Marine Corps veteran and singer/songwriter Sal Gonzalez, and presentations by Quilts of Valor representatives. In addition, Dr. Michael Hamilton of Label 22 presented the keynote address.
Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center Since 2017, the Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center (MACC) has been the hub for all things art in the City by the Lake. Located in a historic antebellum mansion, the MACC features year-round displays of visual art by talented painters, sculptors, crafters and other artists ranging from local school children through world renowned creatives. In recent years, the MACC has put on multiple exhibitions which have drawn attention from art aficionados around the country. Exhibits such as paintings by Grammy award winner Steve Wariner, photos by country music star William Lee Golden and sculptures by Pablo Picasso have helped elevate the MACC’s status in the eyes of art aficionados. Along with showcasing famous artists and artisans, the MACC also provides opportunities to promote the growing community of local artists and students in Sumner County. Popular events include the annual Veterans Art Exhibition and James B. Hawkins Sumner County Student Art Show. In recent years, the MACC has expanded its focus beyond the visual arts to include a wide variety of performance events, building upon Hendersonville’s rich musical heritage. Wear Colors That Truly
LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life.
KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.
CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.
THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cooltoned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.
BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!
PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly—wear what makes you feel beautiful.

It’s a great drink to add to any dinner party, cocktail gathering, back deck after-hours get-together, or birthday bash. DIRECTIONS:

Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 Honeycrisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.

Falling For Neutrals SEASONAL DECOR TIPS FOR KEEPING IT SIMPLE I love decorating for the holiday season, but it gets tough if trying to keep a home decor airy, light and neutral. My home is full of neutrals, such as linen, khaki, white and gray, so decorating for the holidays can be tricky with the bright and bold themes on display at the stores. Here are tips regarding how to achieve a festive look without going overboard.

LESS IS MORE First, whenever decorating for the holiday season, I clear what's possible to make room for what's coming. I eliminate decor pieces that are displayed year-round to avoid adding clutter to rooms. Giving decor pieces or floral arrangements their own space to shine can pull the room together and make it feel very designed.
or evergreen branches with pine cones to fill vases. Add a battery-operated strand of lights and you’re looking just like a designer home magazine spread.
GO COZY Swapping out usual throw pillows and throw blankets for plushy, cuddly materials and seasonal prints are another simple way to add holiday spirit without being so literal. Opting for neutral plaids, cable knits, or sherpa materials add that feeling of fall and winter.
CATER TO ALL THE SENSES Don’t forget about the smell! Stocking up on candles that smell like the season is the last missing piece for a holiday vibe. The total sensory feeling of the holidays is what really brings a home to life, whether it's pumpkin spice burning for Thanksgiving or a fresh pine and cedar for Christmas.
STICK TO THE PALETTE As best as possible, I try to stick to each of the color palettes in my room. When it’s time to bring out pumpkins or holiday Santas, I stick to white and neutral or add in color pops of gold and silver to keep everything flowing. If I start to add too many primary colors, it ends up looking like a mash-up gone astray.
CELEBRATE MEMORIES The holidays are often bursting with family traditions and memories, and decor can reflect that, too. I have many items handed down over the years that I like admiring, but if they aren’t quite right for my room, there are options to bring the spirit of them to life. Framed holiday family photos in a black and white filter are an excellent way to tie in your history of celebrating in a subtle way.
LOOK TO NATURE Some of my favorite items to use for holiday decor come from a simple nature walk. Using actual items you find, or just getting inspiration from the outdoors is a great way to bring sights of the season indoors. For fall, elements such as branches, leaves and neutral gourds match with everything. For winter, I love using sticks with berries
If items aren’t working together, don’t be afraid to get crafty. Painting pumpkins with spray paint or tying some neutral ribbons around existing vases are an easy and affordable way to make them fit a specific aesthetic.
