Welcome to 2024, another year of hope and promise. As always, the new year begins as a blank slate, with the future yet unknown. However, over the coming months, Father Time will slowly fill in the book of 2024 with events and happenings that we cannot possibly foresee. Along with ushering in the new year, January also represents a time of renewal and a time of change. It is also a time of resolution and commitment. After feasting on high calorie entrees and desserts throughout the 2023 holiday season, many of us will resolve to work on our personal health and fitness. Whether your goals involve dropping a belt size or two or undertaking a high impact boot camp regimen, January is the perfect time to start your sojourn. However, fear not – you will not be alone. As always, Hendersonville Lifestyle will be there right beside you, and we begin by bringing you our annual health and wellness issue. It is filled with stories that will give you the opportunity to jump start your healthy lifestyle. First, we visit with a Hendersonville’s Parks & Recreation Director to learn about the exciting adult recreational leagues available in our community. Next, we visit with a local repair expert who gives us tips on how to maintain the health of our household appliances. Continuing, we visit with the race director of one of Hendersonville’s oldest races to learn how he mixes family fitness with raising funds for schools. On a personal note, our Hendersonville Lifestyle editor laced up his running shoes and ran in the event to bring you an insider’s perspective. Next, we visit with a local car care pro who brings us tips to keep our vehicles in tip top shape for many years to come. This feature is particularly near and dear to your publisher’s heart, having spent most of my life as an avid automotive enthusiast. Traveling down the road, we visit with a pediatric orthodontist to learn about how to help our kids maintain healthy smiles. Finally, we look at a few workout essentials to help you start a fitness regimen on a budget. Ready. Set. Go! Happy New Year, Hendersonville! mbarking on a fitness journey requires a great deal of discipline, commitment and hard work. Some people choose to pursue their health and wellness goals on their own, investing countless hours each year in counting calories and working out. Others choose to pursue their fitness dreams with groups of likeminded people. They find joy and comfort in sharing their exercise time with others, and they derive motivation from being surrounded by constant sources of encouragement. It is this second group for which the Hendersonville Parks Adult Recreation Leagues were created.

“We first began offering adult sports leagues in the early 1980s,” says Hendersonville Parks & Recreation Director Andy Gilley. “Initially, our leagues were created as adjuncts to local church softball and basketball groups which were prevalent back then.” Since that time, the adult league popularity has soared, offering something for everyone interested in competitive group fitness activities. Today, the Parks Department offers a wide gamut of organized team sports, including softball, kickball, basketball, tennis, pickleball, rugby, soccer and inline hockey. All of the leagues are operated by the City of Hendersonville, with the exception of soccer, hockey and rugby, which are coordinated by private

organizations. Each league charges a modest participation fee to help cover facilities and operational costs. Most of the sports leagues operate on a seasonal basis, with the exception of tennis, which is played year-round. All of the league games are spread across various locations, including Drakes Creek Park, Veterans Park, Memorial Park, Volunteer Park at Arrowhead, the Adult Rugby Complex and several local school gymnasiums. “We are proud of the participation in our leagues, which runs between 50 and 100 athletes in each sport,” says Andy. “We have seen particular interest in pickleball, with good growth in adult basketball and kickball, as well.” HendersonvilleParks.org

Mr. Appliance To The Rescue LOCAL COMPANY HELPS HOMEOWNERS KEEP THEIR APPLIANCES IN TOP FORM

Modern home appliances are truly technological marvels. High tech designs and computerized control systems offer convenience and functionality that could not have been imagined just a few years ago. However, the additional features and tantalizing “bells and whistles” are not free. Purchasing a major appliance such as a refrigerator or a washer can be a costly endeavor in 2023. Most units are priced on a functionality basis – the more features desired by a homeowner, the more expensive the appliance. To make matters worse, today’s appliances don’t seem to last as long as older, less complex machines. Breakdowns seem to occur more frequently, and when repairs are needed, they tend to be expensive. Troubleshooting electronically controlled drives and computer-based controls is a complex process that often requires specialized skills, equipment and costly replacement parts. As a result, it is important for homeowners to be able to maximize the lives of their household appliances. This process involves three steps – making informed purchasing decisions, following appliance manufacturers’ care procedures and having access to an affordable and reliable repair company. Step three is where Mr. Appliance of Hendersonville comes in. Mr. Appliance of Hendersonville is a franchise of the Mr. Appliance network, which consists of over 300 independent repair service experts who specialize in the maintenance and repair of home appliances across North America. Mr. Appliance of Hendersonville is owned by longtime businessman Rob Jenkins. After moving from Connecticut to Tennessee seven years ago, Rob soon encountered a

problem faced by many area homeowners – a shortage of qualified appliance repair services in the Hendersonville area. Before long, he became interested in starting his own appliance repair company, and he began researching the industry. After reviewing more than 25 potential franchisors, he selected Mr. Appliance. “Mr. Appliance has the best reputation in the industry, and it is widely recognized for its competency and professionalism,” says Rob. “Furthermore, the company offers outstanding contact and support tools that help us deliver the best customer service.” Since starting up in 2019, Rob and his Mr. Appliance team have been dedicated to providing prompt and reliable service on all makes and models of major home appliances. “We repair most major appliances, including refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, ranges, microwave ovens, washers and dryers – pretty much any appliance except for small countertop devices and vacuum cleaners,” says Rob. “Furthermore, unlike many of our competitors, we are able to service all brands and models.” Rob’s business philosophy is built around transparency, and he strongly believes in being upfront and honest with his customers. “We perform every repair on a per job basis, as opposed to hourly billing. Customers only pay the price that is quoted by our technicians before the service is rendered, so there are never any surprises,” says Rob. “We also credit our onsite diagnostic fee directly towards the repair, and we include a full one-year warranty on all manufacturer’s parts and labor.” Once repairs are booked, the Mr. Appliance scheduling system goes into action, keeping customers fully informed of the progress of their jobs. “Our system sends each customer a text and email confirmation the day before scheduled appointments, and it sends a follow-up text once our technician is en

route,” says Rob. “Our confirmation messages include photos of the technician and the service van, so that a customer will know who is coming to their home.” Rob attributes much of his success to the technical skills and customer service commitment of his team members. “Our technicians are extremely well trained, and they receive constant refreshers on the latest troubleshooting and repair techniques,” says Rob. “They are also very friendly, and our customers love their professionalism and ‘can do’ spirit.” As part of its commitment to customer service, Mr. Appliance of Hendersonville has made it easy for customers to schedule repair services. “We pride ourselves on always being available to our customers,” says Rob. “Folks needing service can contact us by phone our through our website. Lake. Since then, it has continued to grow, attracting over 1,100 participants in 2023. Although Larry created the Loop, he is quick to give credit to the volunteers who help make the event possible. “Every year, we use over fifty volunteers,” says Larry. “From registering runners to putting out cones to manning water stations, we could not do it without their help. We also are grateful for the support of the Hendersonville Police and Sumner County Highway departments.” Along with being a family activity, the Loop serves another purpose – raising funds for Community Outreach Making Partners at Sumner Schools (COMPASS). COMPASS is devoted to supporting students, teachers and educational activities in Sumner County. In 2018, the Loop became a part of the annual Hendersonville Race Series, which includes three additional events that provide local athletes a chance to continue their group fitness activities throughout the year.

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY RICK MURRAY

Since 2006, one of Hendersonville’s most popular fitness activities has become a Thanksgiving Day staple – the Indian Lake Loop. Comprised of a five-mile race and a five-kilometer fun run, the Loop has become a treasured tradition for many area families who choose to kick off their holiday with a festive workout. The idea for the Loop originated with race director Larry Phillips, who used to drive to Belle Meade every Thanksgiving to run in the Boulevard Bolt. “While running the Bolt in 2005, I suddenly realized that I was tired of having to drive to Nashville on Thanksgiving,” says Larry. “I told a friend that we needed to start our own race in Hendersonville, and he agreed. Subsequently, we developed a plan and soon we were off and running.” The next year, Larry and his team held the inaugural Loop at Drakes Creek Park. Despite competition from the Bolt, the event still drew 250 runners. In 2008, the race became affiliated with HolidayFest, and relocated to the Streets of Indian

Nothing makes a better first impression than a bright, healthy smile. It is a sign of self-confidence that invites others to make an immediate connection. However, attaining and keeping a great smile requires a commitment to maintaining good oral hygiene. Proper dental care should begin at an early age in order to build a foundation for oral health that will last a lifetime. To learn more about how to develop good dental hygiene, we visited with local orthodontist Dr. Clay Fulks, owner of Smile Construction Orthodontics. Dr. Fulks is one of the area’s leading dental practitioners who has decades of experience providing outstanding orthodontic care to patients of all ages.

WHEN SHOULD PARENTS BEGIN TAKING THEIR CHILDREN FOR DENTAL CARE?

“Children should go to the dentist by the time they reach their first birthday. It is important to begin checking their teeth for early cavities and malformations. Subsequent visits should occur at six-month intervals in order to monitor for proper growth and development. Children should begin seeing an orthodontist when their permanent teeth begin to erupt, which is typically around seven years of age. In some cases, they may require time-sensitive orthodontic care in order to prevent and/or correct unhealthy conditions. If no early treatment is needed, they should be scheduled for follow-up visits every six months.”

WHAT RECOMMENDATIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR PARENTS TO GET THEIR CHILDREN OVER A FEAR OF GOING TO THE DENTIST?

“Parents can best prepare their children for their appointments by explaining the importance of dental and orthodontic health.”

AT WHAT AGE SHOULD CHILDREN BEGIN BRUSHING AND FLOSSING?

“Oral care should begin soon as possible because it is never too early to begin good habits. Parents should encourage brushing every morning and night so that it becomes a routine. Children should also be taught to floss before brushing at night. Building an early dental care foundation can help create healthy habits that will last into adulthood.” CONTINUED >

29

WHAT ARE SOME WARNING SIGNS THAT PARENTS SHOULD BE ALERT FOR WITH REGARD TO THEIR CHILDREN’S DENTAL HEALTH?

“As permanent teeth begin to erupt, anomalous conditions may arise, such as teeth crowding, bite and jaw misalignment, missing or extra permanent teeth and abnormal muscular attachment. While parents may not notice these issues, they can be detected through orthodontic examinations.”

WHAT SHOULD PARENTS LOOK FOR IN A PEDIATRIC DENTIST/ORTHODONTIST?

“Parents should be looking for a provider who cares about his/her patients and recommends the same treatments that he/she would perform on his/ her own family. It is important to schedule a complimentary consultation in order to get to know the doctor and his/her team in person.”

Maintenance Tips For Long-Lasting Vehicles Christian Brothers Helps Hendersonville Drivers Protect Their Automotive Investments M A T T

of Hendersonville

Every January, many people resolve to improve their personal health and wellness. Unfortunately, many of them tend to ignore another facet of a healthy lifestyle – protecting some of their most valuable assets – their vehicles. With new car and truck prices averaging over $50,000, drivers need to keep their vehicles on the roads for as many years as possible. The easiest way to way to maximize the life of a vehicle is to perform routine maintenance. To find out the best approach to vehicle upkeep, the Hendersonville Lifestyle team reached out to Christian Brothers Automotive of Hendersonville owner Matt Rucks to garner some of his expertise.

HOW SHOULD AN OWNER APPROACH VEHICLE MAINTENANCE?

“We recommend that drivers follow their car and truck manufacturers’ recommended maintenance schedules. After all, who knows the vehicles better than the ones who built them?”

WHAT ARE SOME CRITICAL MAINTENANCE CHECKS THAT OWNERS SHOULD PERFORM?

“Perhaps the simplest yet most important upkeep procedures are to change vital vehicle fluids at recommended intervals.

34

AU TO C LU B | AUTO + MARIN E

The most obvious, and perhaps most critical, fluid to maintain is engine oil – it is the life blood of the vehicle’s power train. Today’s vehicle engines employ sophisticated technologies such as variable valve timing, electronic cylinder management and turbochargers. Each of these systems rely upon a steady supply of clean oil in order to function properly. Without regular oil changes, sludge can build up in the engine, resulting in expensive and avoidable repairs. Along with oil changes, owners need to monitor other vital lubricants, such as power steering, brake and transmission fluids. While these fluids typically have longer lifespans than engine oil, they still need to be changed when needed. Power steering fluid lubricates the vehicle steering system, making driving safer and more responsive. However, over time, it will break down and begin to look and smell dirty. This causes the power steering pump to work harder, resulting in difficult control and possible unsafe driving conditions. Similarly, clean brake fluid is critical for safe vehicle operation. Over time, brake fluid tends to become contaminated, which can damage calipers and brake lines and lead to expensive repairs. Finally, fluids in the transmission, transfer case and differential also need to be changed at regular intervals. These fluids keep the gears and internal moving parts of your vehicle's drivetrain lubricated to avoid very expensive repairs and breakdowns.”

WHAT ARE SOME ROUTINE VEHICLE WINTERIZING RECOMMENDATIONS?

“Automotive coolant is another vital component that needs to be checked on a regular basis. Coolant helps engines operate at safe temperatures by dissipating excess heat. It becomes acidic over time, which can damage components such as the radiator, thermostat, hoses and water pump. Owners should have their coolant checked before each winter. In addition to coolant checks, we also recommend having vehicle batteries tested at the same time. Batteries generally last around five years, but they should be tested regularly to avoid having a stranded vehicle on the first really cold day of the year.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . WHAT OTHER THINGS SHOULD DRIVERS MONITOR IN THEIR VEHICLES?

“First, vehicle owners should have their tires rotated on a regular basis. Tire rotation will extend the life of the tires and it will maximize the ride quality. Next, spark plugs generally need to be changed around the 100,000-mile interval. Drive belts should also be checked at the same time. Many vehicles also have engine timing belts. These belts should be changed per the manufacturers’ recommendations.” Our final tip is simple – maintain your vehicles. Routine maintenance is far less expensive than repairs.” Christian Brothers Automotive 563 East Main Street, Hendersonville, TN 37075 615.942.0433 Cbac.com
