LIFESTYLE LETTER
Have A Holly, Jolly Christmas! “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.” Eddie Pola, George Wyle Life is a whirlwind. It seems like only yesterday that we were celebrating the arrival of the new year. Now, December has returned, and we are preparing to write the final chapter in the book that is 2023. While we may lament the pace at which the months have passed, we are certainly ready to greet the return of the holiday season. It is a time of hope and joy, filled with activities and special occasions to share with family and friends. As always, your Hendersonville Lifestyle team is ready and willing to help you plan your Yuletide festivities. Our December 2023 issue is filled from cover to cover with stories that will brighten your holiday spirits and help you get the most out of this Christmas. So hop aboard our sleigh with us, and let’s check out what’s happening in and around the City by the Lake this December. First, we take a look at some popular events taking place across Sumner County that will help you and your family build memories that will last forever. Parades, Christmas lights, festivals, tree lightings and open houses… They are all happening this month, and we tell you when and where. Next, we visit with a two-time Dove Award winning singer who is on a mission to make the world a better place, one song at a time. Continuing, we bring you a list of some of the most popular Christmas albums from over the years. This music is guaranteed to bring out the Yule in each of you. Finally, we look back at recent special event that showcased the sights, sounds, scents and tastes of Hendersonville. So slip into your holiday pajamas, grab a cup of eggnog – extra nutmeg of course, and come along with us on our holiday ride. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, LY N N B O W L E S , P U B L I S H E R @HENDERSONVILLELIFESTYLE

Billy Gaines is a man on a mission. As a talented singer and songwriter, Billy is out to make the world a happier place through his songs and his personal faith in God. The two-time Dove Award winner is known for his upbeat, inspirational style that has captivated audiences across the world for more than four decades. Along with his live performances, Billy has continued to gain fans and followers through his devotion to spreading the gospel through television, radio, albums and podcasts. Soon, his stirring story will reach even more people through the publication of his new book, “Other Side Of This Trial – My Story, His Plan, His Hand.” Across his career, Billy’s talents have been recognized by many professionals within the music industry. Along with his two Dove Awards, Billy has also received numerous other accolades, including three additional Dove nominations and six number one radio singles. Billy’s unique style has also made him a highly sought-after studio singer. Artists such as Peabo Bryson, Amy Grant, CeCe Winans, Vanessa Williams and DC Talk have incorporated Billy’s rich vocals into several award-winning recordings. In addition to his studio work, Billy has also released the solo album “Ten Thousand Angels,” which is a compilation of ten beloved songs of praise.
Recently, the Hendersonville Lifestyle team sat down with Billy to get to know him a little bit better.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN MUSIC? “From early childhood, I always loved listening to music. As I recall, I didn’t become interested in performing for others until I was about 14 years old. However, my mother remembers things differently. She said that I have been singing since I was two years old.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MUSICAL GENRE? “I have a deep passion for classical and contemporary soul as well as rhythm and blues music. I love songs with feeling – songs that touch the soul. I find that this genre helps me make a real connection with my listeners that enables me to make a positive contribution to their lives.”
WHAT MUSICAL ARTISTS HAVE INFLUENCED YOU? “I have been influenced by numerous performers in my life, spanning multiple genres and generations. I am inspired by ‘singers’ singers’ – the artists whose legendary vocal talents are held in high regard by other performers. Some of my personal favorites are CONTINUED >

Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Sam Cook, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Andy Williams and Tony Bennett.”
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PERFORMANCE? “My greatest memory is singing my song ‘There Will Come A Day’ at the 2022 Hendersonville Freedom Festival. The song is very special to me, and it had just spent four weeks in the number one position of the 2022 European Independent Artist Airplay Chart.”
WHO IS YOUR MENTOR? “While I have learned from many people, the one who mentored me the most was the late Danniebelle Hall. Danniebelle had a beautiful voice that she dedicated to serving God by preaching His word through gospel music.”
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? “I am motivated to discover and fulfill God’s purpose for my life. I consider myself to be an encourager, and I am driven to uplift and inspire others through my singing.”

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME AND GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ANY ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE? “This question is easy. I would have listened to my grandfather and let him teach me to play the piano, as he attempted to do time and time again.”
WHAT MAKES HENDERSONVILLE SO SPECIAL FOR YOU? “Hendersonville has been a place of musical birth for me. I have been embraced by my friends and neighbors, and I have been privileged to perform at several local venues and events. Some of my recent performances have been at the 2022 Farmers and Artisan Market, the 2022 Freedom Festival, the 2022 Sparkle Night and Tree Lighting Celebration, the 2023 Summer Concert Series at the Streets of Indian Lake and the 2023 SumnerFest. Other local venues/events where I have appeared include Jolly Ollie’s, the Rudder at Anchor High Marina and a Sumner Young Professionals luncheon at the Streets. I also served as a judge for the 2023 Freedom Festival ‘Hendersonville Has Talent’ preliminary and final competitions.”
WHEN YOU ARE NOT WORKING, WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? “I love saltwater fishing. It is both challenging and relaxing at the same time.” Billy Gaines performs R&B favorites at Jolly Ollies.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding, abilities or intellect. Consult God in all of your efforts, aspirations and endeavors, and He will direct your steps."

tastebuds focused on the centerpiece of the event, the barbecue competition. This year’s edition saw over 50 teams vying for top honors in six categories, including Pig Master Grand Champion, People’s Choice, Pork Ribs, Pork, Anything Butt and Dessert. Most of the grillers set up on Friday afternoon, and then spent all night and most of Saturday perfecting their culinary creations. Entries were refereed by a team of 240 volunteer judges who received on-the-job training on the fine art of evaluating barbecue in a competitive environment. Each judge sampled all of the grilled items and rated them on several factors, including taste, appearance and aroma. When the tastings were complete, the judges rendered their decisions, and the winners were announced. Top awards went to High Lonesome Smokers (Pig Master Grand and Pork Ribs), Smokin’ Daddies BBQ (People’s Choice), Killer B’s Backyard BBQ (Pork), Hogs B Hatin (Anything Butt) and Electro-Que-Ted (Dessert).

To the delight of barbecue fans everywhere, the annual Hendersonville Pig Fest returned in style for a festive two-day event on Oct. 27 – 28, 2023. Thousands of foodies attended the event, eager to savor some of the best grilling around. As in past years, Pig Fest was sponsored by Hendersonville Parks & Recreation, Sumner County Tourism and HolidayFest, and the event raised nearly $60,000 to support – Mary’s Magical Place, Live Love Nashville, Christmas 4 Kids and Grace Place Ministry. The event kicked off on Friday evening with one of the City by the Lake’s favorite happenings – the Hendersonville Hometown Jam. This year’s concert included opening performances by rising stars Charly Reynolds, Clint Park, Ben Chapman and Dillon Carmichael. Following the opening acts, the Grammy award winning Kentucky Headhunters took to the stage to thrill the crowd with some of their greatest hits. On Saturday morning, the Pig Fest resumed, with all eyes, noses and

Giving Campaign
2023 34
G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE
“
This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”
The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”

BUILD A CAMPFIRE READY S'MORES DESSERT BOARD WITH THIS HOW-TO GUIDE
S’MORES DESSERT BOA RD ARTICLE BY BAILEY MORRIS
It’s campfire season! You know what that means? S’MORES! These sweet treats are staples during the fall and winter! I have many childhood memories of sitting by the campfire with my family telling stories, gazing at the stars, and roasting marshmallows. This year, take your s’mores to a whole new level with this S’mores Dessert Board! They are so easy and fun to make! Similar to a Charcuterie Board, a S’mores Dessert Board is beautifully decorated and full of everything you need to make the perfect s’mores! Some of my favorite things to include in a s’mores are either peanut butter or a mint chocolate candy!
W H AT YOU W ILL NEED: Board: A beautiful wood board or metal tray will look great! Marshmallows: Choose between regular, jumbo, or flavored marshmallows. Chocolate: There are so many options for chocolate when it comes to s’mores! There’s milk chocolate, peanut butter chocolates, white chocolate, caramel chocolates, and much more! Graham Crackers: Use graham crackers or a variety of cookies for your s’mores. Fresh Fruit: Include fresh fruits as toppings for your s’mores. Skewers: Don’t forget to bring skewers to roast your marshmallows on! D ECEMB ER 2 0 2 3
