LIFESTYLE LETTER

Wishing Hendersonville a Happy Thanksgiving We blinked… And just like that, January 2023 has become November 2023. From New Year’s Day to Thanksgiving Day, this year seems to have flown by. Of course, time seems to move faster when we are having fun, and we are certainly having a lot of it this fall in Hendersonville. Every weekend seems to be filled with exciting events that are just made for sharing good times with friends and family. There is no doubt about it – we are truly fortunate to call the City by the Lake home. In recognition of our good fortune, we at Hendersonville Lifestyle dedicate our November edition to gratitude and thanksgiving for the blessings we have received. This issue is filled with great stories about many of the people, places and things that make our community so special. We begin our November sojourn by visiting with a local nonprofit that pairs volunteer drivers with riders to help local senior citizens lead independent lives. Next, we look at a popular annual event during which local restaurants and diners express their gratitude to one another. Finally, we talk with a local business owner who is giving back to the community by providing free meals for people in need. As usual, we also bring you the latest in community and business happenings to keep you in tune with the Hendersonville and Sumner County vibe. So now it’s time to throw another log on the fire, grab a warm toddy and enjoy the cool weather with us. Happy Thanksgiving, Hendersonville!

LOCAL SENIOR CITIZENS GRATEFUL FOR NONPROFIT THAT HELPS THEM MAINTAIN THEIR INDEPENDENCE

The desire to live an independent life is a strong one. As soon as a child takes its first steps, the journey toward freedom begins. The rush toward independence continues throughout the teenage years, and it intensifies the day that a teenager gets a driver’s license. At long last, the young driver has the ability to come and go as he or she chooses, setting the stage the freedom that comes with adulthood. Mobility provides the means for a person to live, work and play without having to rely on others. Unfortunately, some people lose the capacity to drive as they become senior citizens. For some, the inability

to drive is due to a medical condition, such as poor hearing and eyesight. Others may not be able to afford a vehicle due to living on a fixed income. After a lifetime of living independently, the sudden loss of mobility can be devastating, resulting in serious mental and physical health consequences. Without being able to drive themselves, seniors become dependent upon others to provide all of their transportation. They are no longer able to set their own schedules, and they are only able to come and go when others are available to drive them. Fortunately, for seniors over 60 who live in the Hendersonville area, there is a solution – Community Life Bridge. Since 2019, Community Life Bridge (CLB) has addressed the transportation gap for many seniors, helping them continue to lead productive and independent lives. CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3

Community Life Bridge Program Director Christine Martin shares a moment with rider Joy Barbarine at a recent event.

Through its Community Life Ride program, CLB enables seniors to maintain their mobility, resulting in improved physical, mental and spiritual health. “Community Life Ride fills the driving void faced by many seniors across our county,” said CLB Program Director Christine Martin. “In the program, we pair volunteer drivers with eligible riders to help them get to where they need to go, such as doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping and social gatherings.” Since its inception, CLB has made a tremendous difference in the lives of all of its riders, helping them to remain happy and active within the community. “I just love Community Life Ride, and I am so thankful for it,” says rider Betty Callis. “The drivers are so helpful, and they truly take care of me and the other riders. I have made friends through the program, and I don’t know what I would do without it.” Betty’s sentiments were echoed by fellow rider Joy Barbarine. “The volunteers are more than just people taking us to our scheduled appointments – they are our friends,” says Joy. “They are wonderful people who have gone so far above and beyond what I expected when I joined the program.” Although Community Life Ride’s positive impact on riders is quite evident, it has an equally profound effect upon the volunteer drivers. “All of the riders just seem so appreciative of us and the service we provide,” says driver Wendy Perry. “Recently, one of my riders gave me a hug and told me that I made her week.” Driver and 2023 Community Life Ride Volunteer of the Year Deborah Wilmore agrees with Wendy. “Community Life Ride is much more than a transportation service – it is a bonding of friendship between the driver and the rider,” said Wilmore. “I care about my riders, and they care about me. I end every driving day feeling better than when I began because of the time that I got to share with my dear rider friends.” The gratitude expressed by riders and drivers is also felt by CLB staff and board members. “Through Community Life Ride, I receive so much love and encouragement from our riders,” adds Christine. “They are so appreciative and quick to let us know that they love the program and what it brings to their lives. That spirit of thankfulness helps me stay focused on growing the program and The bond between driver and rider is strong.

Long-time Hendersonville residents can remember the days when dining out in the city was limited to eating at local fast food or “meat and three” establishments. Folks seeking upscale dining and/or celebrating special occasions had to travel to Rivergate or downtown Nashville to grab a special meal or to have a glass of wine. Fortunately, those days are in the past. These days, Hendersonville has a thriving restaurant community that offers an amazing array of dining styles and cuisines. Every week, thousands of local diners frequent these establishments to grab some of the Midstate’s finest food and drinks. Homestyle breakfasts, gourmet burgers, handcrafted pizzas, juicy steaks and sizzling seafood - if you want it, the City by the Lake has it. CONTINUED >

For over two decades, local restaurants have been celebrated annually at one of the city’s most popular events – the Taste of Hendersonville. Produced by the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce, Taste provides an opportunity for diners to sample new food and drink selections from eateries across the city while enjoying a festive evening with their fellow foodies. This year’s Taste was held at the Streets of Indian Lake on Thursday night, Sept. 28. Over 80 restaurants and vendors were on hand to showcase some of their delectable wares and to thank patrons for their continuing support. Along with outstanding cuisine, Taste also offered a variety of entertainment, including live music by Sequoia South and an optional VIP experience. Younger diners also had several fun activities to enjoy, including bounce houses, games and balloon animals. As always, the highlight of Taste was the opportunity for diners to vote for their favorite restaurants, foods and drinks in the “Best Of” competition. Guests could cast their votes in several different categories, including best appetizer, best entrée and

best dessert. In addition, all entrants were also evaluated by a team of celebrity judges whose votes were counted along with those of the diners. This year’s judging team included Channel 5 meteorologist Lelan Statom, News 4 anchor Holly Thompson and singer/songwriter Morgan Myles. After all of the votes were tallied, the winners of the 2023 Taste of Hendersonville were announced by the Hendersonville Chamber. • Best of Taste– Safari’s Brick Oven & Grille • People’s Choice – Sanders Ferry Pizza • Best Booth Display – Wildflour Cake Pop Shoppe • Best Entrée – Meat Sweats BBQ • Best Appetizer – Myers’ Front Porch • Best Side Dish – The Rudder at Anchor High Marina • Best Kids Cuisine – Pizza Ranch • Best Dessert – Lili Bellas Cakes and Coffee • Best Beverage - Edit

LOCA L’S CH OICE | L IFE + CULTURE

Every day across Hendersonville, random acts of kindness are taking place. Many folks are aware of some of these deeds, but the vast majority take place quietly and out of the glare of the publicity spotlight. Whether the acts involve donations of money, goods or services, the process is always the same. Needs are identified, and good people step up to meet them. One such good person is local restauranteur, Ross El-Bobou, the owner and operator of Safari’s Brick Oven & Grill in Hendersonville. Ross is a longtime restauranteur who began his food service career in 1983. Over the next 33 years, he held a variety of operational and management roles in numerous restaurants, including Major Wallaby’s, Cracker Barrel, Logan’s Roadhouse and O’Charley’s. Ross was also the owner/operator of the original Safari’s restaurant, which was located in the Rivergate area. In 2016, Ross opened Safari’s Brick Oven & Grill at its East Main Street location in Hendersonville. The restaurant offers an expansive food and drink menu that includes burgers, salads, seafood, fajitas, chicken dishes and brick oven-cooked pizzas and calzones. In addition, Safari’s offers some of the most sumptuous steaks around, including porterhouse, ribeye, sirloin and prime rib cuts. Over the years, Safari’s has become a local favorite that is noted for its signature cuisine and its comfortable atmosphere. Its popularity has earned it numerous accolades, including winning the 2022 and 2023 Taste of Hendersonville “Best of Taste” awards and being named the Hendersonville Area Chamber of Commerce’s 2023 Small Business of the Year. Most people around town know that Ross is legendary for his big steaks. However, most are unaware that

he has an even bigger heart. For several years now, Ross has been quietly donating complete meals to families and organizations in need across Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky. “Since the beginning, our customers have blessed us,” says Ross. “Helping to feed those in need is one of the ways that we give back to our community.” Ross and his business partner Walter McCauley developed the meal giving idea when they became aware of how many people were facing food insecurity across the region. “We began to hear stories about local families who had fallen on hard times, and who needed a little help to get back on their feet,” says Ross. “We knew that we had to do something, and we thought that providing a good hot meal for them could help make a difference.” Despite his generosity, Ross never meets the end recipients of his meals. Instead, he prepares and packages the meals, and then hands them off to one of Walter’s contacts, Teresa Puckett, who delivers the food to the families or groups in need. During 2022, Safari’s donated over 100 meals to area families and groups in need, ranging in size from four to twelve individuals. The restaurant also provided free meals for a 25-student class at a school in Kentucky. Due to the continuing need, Ross expects that he and his team will meet or exceed that number during 2023. Along with donating meals, Ross also gives back by providing Safari’s gift certificates to area schools for awards and fundraising purposes. However, despite the costs of food, packaging materials and gift cards, Ross never takes a tax deduction. “It is not about recognition nor tax write-offs,” says Ross. “It is about doing the right thing.”

"Meal donation is an important mission for us. We don't post about it, we don't announce it and we don't seek out photo opportunities. We do it because it needs to be done." Ross El-Bobou

a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

32

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

“If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious.”

What about dessert? “If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around $20, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.” James Lewis is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years, and he and his wife, Nancie own Crush Wine Bar in Castle Rock Colorado.
