After a long and hot summer, September has finally arrived, bringing with it fall weather, shorter days and, of course, football. September also marks the publication of Hendersonville Lifestyle’s style issue. Style means different things to different people. For some, it is all about the latest fashions or hairstyles. For others, it might be what’s trending on social media. For us at Hendersonville Lifestyle, it means a great deal more – after all, style is in our name. We see style as how we live our lives. It is an expression of how we see the world and how we want the world to see us. This month, we bring you several stories that tell you how style shines around the City by the Lake. First, we visit with a local preparatory school who has built its style around belonging and inclusion. Next, we peek at one of the fastest growing home improvement trends, transforming garages from obscure parking areas into stylish storage spaces. Finally, we look at a stylish hobby – vintage model railroading. Sound fun? Then, hop aboard our fall express, and let’s travel around our city in style. We’ll see you around, Hendersonville! BOWLES,

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
Adaline Hamlin shows off her state design challenge award.
However, style can also have a much more profound mean ing. It can be defined as class – a way of living one’s life by seek ing out opportunities for making the world a better place. This deeper definition of style is alive and well, and it is being practiced every day at Pope John Paul II Preparatory School.
ALL
The words of wisdom offered by the late poet Maya Angelou are often overlooked in today’s social media-driven climate, where style is usually defined by the latest fashion or coiffure being worn by pop icons. When viewed through this prism, it tends to take on an air of ephemerality.
Established in 2002, Pope John Paul II Preparatory School (Pope Prep) is widely renowned as one of the best private educa tional institutions in the Mid-South. Originally founded as a high school, Pope Prep expanded to include middle school grades during the fall of 2021. Today, the school is home for almost 800 students who are preparing to excel in college and beyond.
Given its academic reputation, one would think that Pope Prep style would revolve around scholarship and achievement. However, that assumption is incorrect. At Pope Prep, style means“Ourinclusion.styleiswelcoming and inclusive,” says Jennifer Dye, school director of innovation. “There is a place and a space for all students, regardless of their interests or abilities.” This philosophy of inclusion is embodied in all aspects of life at Pope Prep and is pivotal to the school’s mission to develop students who are strong in mind, body, character and spirit, and that encourages them to live their lives in ser vice to others. “We offer many opportunities for students to find their places in our community,” says Jennifer. “Our students aren’t POPE PREP STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES. Pope Prep incorporates team work to prepare students for life.

Maya Angelou
“At Pope Prep, we are known for academic achievement and for encouraging our students to reach,” says Interim Headmaster Karen Phillips. “However, we also excel in other pursuits, including art, music, theater and athletics. Our stu dents have abundant opportunities to develop high levels of skills and depth in all their pursuits.”

just academics, athletes or artists; they are all of these things, and much more. For example, we have students who are on our robot ics team, but who also run cross country. All of our students have the opportunity to explore their interests and engage in different ways of thinking and doing.” One of the best examples of Pope Prep style in action is an inno vative initiative called the Hand-In-Hand Options (HIHO) pro gram. This program was developed to help students with learning challenges succeed in the school environment.
Over the years, the HIHO program has achieved significant suc cess, resulting in high levels of student accomplishment that have been noticed by others outside of the school community.
20
Pope Prep excels both on the field and off the field.
Diversity and inclusion are hallmarks of Pope Prep style.
In the HIHO program, each student’s curriculum is personal ized to match their individual goals, with instruction delivered through a combination of regular classroom, small group and one-on-one methods. Throughout the program, they are paired with student peer mentors who help them navigate school life.
After finishing the four-year HIHO program, all students receive special certificates of completion. Many of the graduates choose to continue their education at colleges or vocational schools.
“The range of disabilities facing some of our students is broad, but we feel that it is important for them to feel at home within our school community,” says Karen. “All of our HIHO students take inclusion classes with their peers in the arts, social studies, the ology and innovation. We want all of our students to be prepared to take on the challenges in their lives.”
Pope Prep's expansive campus looks stylish from the air.
“Last year, one of our HIHO students, Adaline Hamlin, par ticipated in a program to develop a solution to help people in our community,” says Jennifer. “She designed and developed a special lunch tray to keep food from sliding off. After building a prototype, Adaline worked with our school 3D print club to manufacture the finished tray. Subsequently, she was recog nized by the Tennessee STEM and Innovation Network for her innovative project.”
Since its founding in 2004, the HIHO program has helped 27 students find their way to success at Pope Prep. For the 2022-23 academic year, the program has 9 students enrolled in grades 9 – 12.
True to the words and spirit of Maya Angelou, the Pope Prep family doesn’t just survive, it thrives – with passion, compassion and style for all.
The arts are an important part of Pope Prep's style.
Both peer mentors and HIHO students learn from the program.
“The HIHO program is not just about helping students with disabilities; it makes all of us better,” says Jennifer. “Our HIHO students are embraced by the other students and the faculty who see them as valuable members of our school community. The peer mentors develop special bonds with the HIHO students, and they learn and grow with each other.”

GARAGE TECH | HOME SERVICES TRANSFORMING OLD STORAGE SPACES INTO NEW LIVING AREAS 24
However, despite the wide range of remod eling projects, one area of the home seems to have often been overlooked – the garage. Traditionally, most garages have been relegated to just being places to park vehicles and to store tools and outdoor equipment.
“Although the trend is a relatively recent phe nomenon for many homeowners, we have actually been doing garage remodeling projects since 2000,” says Sandra Sokol, owner of Closets by Design of Nashville, Middle Tennessee’s leader in optimized storage solutions. “We did over 100 turnkey garage projects during 2021, and we will more than double that number this year.”
Home improvement is a never-ending process. New designs, improved materials, repurposed space – all these things and more can add style and value to the family home. Since homebuilding began, there have been several improvement projects which have proven to be par ticularly popular with homeowners across the coun try. Closet upgrades, bathroom retrofits and kitchen redesigns top the list, with each improvement known to increase home utility and resale value.
“We want our clients to be fully involved in the design and pricing process,” says Sandra. “We encourage them to pick and choose all options, which enables them to establish their own budgets.

“The Silver II cabinets and accessories are crafted in black- and silver-colored materials,” says Sandra. “The modern color scheme coupled with special finishes give the Silver II line a sleek, industrial appearance, which is perfect for many customer garages.”
One of Closet by Design’s most popular cabinetry lines is their proprietary Silver II collection.
Recently, garages have begun to receive much needed attention from remodelers and homeown ers. Spawned in part by the “man cave” and “she shed” trends, the humble vehicle storage area has found a new lease in life. Indeed, today’s garages are increasingly being transformed into extended living areas. While storage remains the dominant use for the space, it is now storage with style.
Make Over Your
Garage With Style
Homeowners seeking to upgrade their garages are often uncertain as to how to begin their proj ects. Fortunately, Sandra and her team make the process simple and painless.
As with all Closets by Design projects, custom ers are involved from start to finish.
After spending years viewing garages through the filter of vehicle and tool storage, many home owners are unaware of the many different design options available for space transformation.
“Most redesign projects begin with the instal lation of custom cabinets,” says Sandra. “In our factory in Franklin, we manufacture our own cab inetry, including tall floor units, work benches, upper storage bins and rolling cabinets. By build ing our own cabinets, we can ensure that they are perfect dimensions for each garage.”

Along with cabinet replacement, Closets by Design also offers other storage upgrades, includ ing their Design Wall coverings, which provide additional hardware and accessories for storing yard, gardening, sport and leisure items. They can also provide custom garage flooring solutions for further enhancing garage appearance and utility.
“We begin every project by providing an in-home assessment during which we will dis cuss customer preferences and options,” says Sandra. “Subsequently, we will measure, design and price the project – all during the same appointment. If the client is ready to move for ward, we will complete the contracts and assign an installation date at the same time.”

Immediately
All in all, it is a very comfortable and fun process for both our clients and our designers.” prepare for the project implementation, homeowners will need to temporarily clean out their garages of any boxes, tubs and other items taking up storage space. These items can be returned to the garage as soon as the cabinet and/or flooring installation is complete, which usually takes just one day. upon the size and complexity of the project, most projects can go from approval to completion within just a few weeks. thereafter, homeowners can begin to enjoy the storage and increased home value arising from their upgraded garage.
