Thankful in November
November 2022 PUBLISHER
Lynn Bowles | lynn.bowles@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Rick Murray | rick.murray@citylifestyle.com
We who live in Hendersonville are truly blessed. We have the best schools, businesses and institutions around, all committed to helping our city continue to grow and prosper. As of 2021, Hendersonville’s quality of life has continued to be recognized far beyond the boundaries of the 37075, leading to a steady influx of new residents and businesses. This past August, the City by the Lake was showcased in an article in the prestigious publication Southern Living. There is no doubt about it – our secret is out. Hendersonville is a great place in which to live, work and play, and people are taking notice. In recognition of our good fortune, we at Hendersonville Lifestyle dedicate our November edition to gratitude and thanksgiving for the blessings which have been bestowed upon us. This issue is filled with great stories about many of the people, places and things that make our community so special. To begin, we visit a local boutique that crafts custom soaps, candles and gifts that help provide the joyous atmosphere of fall. Next, we explore how to create the perfect centerpiece to adorn the dinner table for Thanksgiving Day. We continue our tour of gratitude by visiting with a group of local businesses and volunteers who recently spent a day helping to fix up a venerable local nonprofit. To help bolster the holiday spirit, we next check out several upcoming activities that should be on anyone’s fall calendar. Finally, we look back at the annual Taste of Hendersonville event, which showcased dozens of local restaurants and vendors who serve our city every day. We think that you will enjoy these gratitude-themed stories and that they will inspire you to have an extra special Thanksgiving Day this year. So now, let’s get the festivities started. Happy Thanksgiving!

“For the holidays, you can’t beat home sweet home.” — Al Stillman, Robert Allen After dealing with the pandemic for the past few years, many people are once again opening their homes to friends and family as they celebrate the holiday season. They are working hard to prepare their abodes in eager anticipation of entertaining holiday visitors. Most home celebrations revolve around the dining room. After all, it is the place where feasts are served to the delight of guests young and old. To prepare for the coming special occasions, many homeowners take the opportunity to adorn their dining rooms with special decorations that reflect the sentiment of the season, as well as CONTINUED >

evoke memories of holidays past. One of the most popular redecoration projects involves setting the perfect dining room table. While decorative centerpieces are the hallmark of holiday dining rooms, many homeowners do not know how to begin the selection and crafting process. Fortunately, one local interior designer has a few tips to make tabletop decorating a fun, and stress-free occasion. Lyn Wray, owner of Lyn Wray interiors, has been creating innovative interior design projects around the country for over 30 years. Along with her assistant and mother, Susan Caldwell, Lyn has the expertise to redesign any interior living space, especially the dining room. “I specialize in residential design with an eye for the unique,” says Lyn. “I love assisting clients in downsizing, relocating and incorporating their own furnishings into a fresh new look.” Lyn’s interest in dining table centerpieces comes from her personal love of entertaining guests. “I love hosting dinner parties at my home,” says Lyn. “Although I love to cook, my forte is setting and decorating the dining room table.” Lyn’s advice to homeowners seeking to craft their own table settings is simple – start with what you have. “Before tackling a tabletop project, a homeowner should look around their house to see if they already have items they can use,” says Lyn. “For example, an existing fall wreath can serve as a centerpiece when adorned with candles set inside at various heights. It looks particularly elegant when placed upon a layer of tablecloths featuring different textures and colors. Top it off with Grandma’s china and some vintage glassware, and you will have a lovely holiday table setting.” Repurposing existing items is not the only way that would-be decorators can save money. “I do a lot of my decoration shopping close to the holiday season to get the best deals,” says Lyn. “Many craft and design stores offer 50% off decorations in order to clear their inventories, resulting in great savings for shoppers.”

For fifteen years, the Indian Lake Loop has become a treasured tradition for families across Middle Tennessee. Every Thanksgiving morning, over 1,000 runners and walkers choose to begin their holiday by participating in one of the Loop’s two events – a timed 5-mile road race or a more family-friendly 5K fun run/walk. The proceeds from the races benefitted COMPASS (Community Outreach Making Partnerships at Sumner Schools), a notfor-profit agency that provides a variety of assistance services to area schools. This year’s event will be held on Nov. 24, with activities starting at 8 a.m. Runners and walkers are encouraged to dress festively for the occasion to help get into the holiday spirit.

The spirit of thanksgiving was alive and well at Shalom Zone in Gallatin on Sept. 23. That day, over 100 dedicated volunteers performed a wide range of much needed repairs and upgrades to the nonprofit’s building and landscaping. Founded in the 1990’s, the Shalom Zone is based in the former Union High School building in Gallatin. It is a safe place that offers support, programs and opportunities to inspire success in the local community. “This year, we had workers from three companies – Rosendin, DPR Construction and Meta,” says Jayna Louder, subcontractor program administrator for the Rosendin company. “Our volunteers believe in the mission of the Shalom Zone, and they were committed to getting as much done as possible on the workday.”
Hard hats abounded during the Shalom Zone workday.

Your Autumn Dinner Party Is Served Catering experts Chef Kyle and Hannah Williams, owners of Savor & Swirl culinary company, create an outdoor dinner party with chef-driven perennial dishes served in beautiful seasonal settings.
For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

Insider Tips for Hosting:
• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”

Scent s Of Fa l l Scented Products To Help Set The Mood For The Holidays
As Thanksgiving closes in, many homeowners are spending a great deal of time and effort preparing their homes for the holiday season. From fall cleaning to interior and exterior decorating, everyone is trying to make their homes as warm and inviting as possible for their holiday guests. Although most seasonal preparations are visual in nature, homeowners should also consider the importance of selecting the right aromas for their homes. After all, scent is one of our most powerful senses, and it is deeply tied to our emotions. The aromas of such favorites as pumpkin spice and gingerbread can evoke powerful memories of holidays long past and help get us into the mood for those to come. To help select the right scents for the season, homeowners should head to the Soap Factory at the Streets of Indian Lake. At the Soap Factory, owners Gerry and Whitney McLillie and their team can help you select handcrafted soaps, candles and other products that will create the perfect holiday atmosphere in your home. “At the Soap Factory, we have a broad range of custom products that are perfect for any home or office,” says Gerry. “Most of our items, such as our scented soaps and candles, are made in our soapery daily by our talented staff.” Soap Factory products span the gamut from home goods, such as laundry soap, candles and essential oils, to personal items, such as shampoo bars, bath bombs, body butters and beard oils. The store also features many items with a local flair, including custom soaps featuring the colors of the Tennessee Titans and the Nashville Predators. Most products are manufactured with environmentally friendly processes using plant-based and paraben-free materials. “We take our commitment to our environment seriously,” says Gerry. “Our customers know that they get both quality and sustainability when they shop with us.” To find your perfect holiday scents, be sure to visit the Soap Factory.
