VOL STATE'S NEW SUMMER TERMS ALLOWS STUDENTS TO TAKE MORE CLASSES

Pioneer Pen may be taken as an English practicum at Vol State. It is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in all aspects of publishing a literary arts magazine. “I wanted to join Pioneer Pen partly because I’m a writer, but I want to do some work as an editor in journalism, and I thought it would give me some legitimate experience," Student editor Kaily Farrell says. "My favorite part is putting it all together and seeing which pieces actually complement each other, even though they may be from different people. TENNESSEE MATH TEACHERS ASSOCIATION MATH COMPETITION AT VOL STATE The Tennessee Math Teachers Association held a regional math competition at Volunteer State Community College recently. Hundreds of students from schools across the area competed in algebra I and II, geometry, statistics, precalculus and calculus. CAROL ERNST WINS 2018 SUMNER COUNTY ORDER OF THE HORSE AWARD Hendersonville resident Carol Ernst, the leader behind Mary’s Magical Place (the city’s first all-inclusive playground), was awarded the Order of the Horse prize April 12 at the State of the County Forum. First given in 1997, the award recognizes local groups or individuals who have served Sumner County through their service and their leadership. She received the award from Sumner County Executive Anthony Holt, who praised her “contributions to the health and wellness of our community.” Before giving her acceptance speech, she called

NEW PROFESSIONAL MUSIC DEGREE AND TUITION-FREE CLASSES THIS FALL AT VOL STATE Volunteer State Community College will offer new degree programs and classes this fall. The Associate of Applied Science degree in professional music will help students develop skills to become working musicians in the entertainment industry. Students can focus on multiple musical genres, including Americana, church and gospel music, commercial music, songwriting and other categories. The entertainment media production division will offer screenwriting and non-fiction film and video production. Finally, the new joint Vol State-Tennessee State University (TSU) criminal justice partnership will begin this fall. The transfer program will allow students who complete their Associate of Science degree in crim-

T H E E D U C AT O R Del Phillips, Ph.D. Director of Schools, Sumner County Tennessee Del Phillips, Ph.D., was born to be an educator, having come from a family in which both of his parents were teachers. After serving as principal, athletics director and superintendent, he became Sumner County’s director of schools in 2011. Since his arrival, he has continually bolstered the school system, including achieving stable budgets, addressing facilities issues and expanding educational opportunities. He is very active in community organizations, holding leadership positions in Rotary Club, the United Way and the Hendersonville Chamber of Commerce. During his rare periods of downtime, he follows high school and college athletics and is an avid hunter.

He currently serves as the station’s senior meteorologist as well as the co-host of the midday show “Talk of the Town.” He is involved with numerous community organizations, including the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, the Boy Scouts of America and Cornerstone Financial Credit Union. He has also participated in Taste of Hendersonville, the Gallatin Shalom Zone dinner and the Garlands & Glitter Fashion Show. Lelan and his family are proud to call Hendersonville home, having resided here since 2005.

THE MUSICIAN Dana Williams Member of Country Music group Diamond Rio Dana Williams is a lifelong musician, having first performed at the age of 7. Over the years, he performed with many musicians before joining the country music group Diamond Rio. Since then, the group has experienced great success, including recently celebrating its 20th year as Grand Ole Opry members. Along with his musical career, he is co-owner of a local boutique, the Trendy Trunk, with his wife, Deanna. When not helping with the business, he enjoys boating and flying drones. He is passionate about Hendersonville, saying “We have everything here that you could possibly need.”

In addition to his musical creativity, he is also an accomplished painter and photographer. According to William, he has always had an appreciation for the visual arts. “I have been blessed to know a lot of painters and photographers over the years, and I have always admired their styles and their attention to detail," he says. After many years of observation, he finally decided to try his hand at painting when his son was a baby. “I had always wanted to try my hand at painting, but I put it off for years," he says. "Finally, I decided to give acrylics a shot to see how well I could do."
"I was going through a lot in my personal life and painting helped me take my mind to beautiful places that soothed me.” However, despite the joy that he found in his art, he began to get increasingly frustrated with the slow painting process. “Most of my paintings took three to six months to complete, with some of them taking over a year,” he says. One day, he realized that he could get just as much satisfaction from photography as he could from painting. “It was an eye-opener," he says. "I had always used photographs to paint from, and I suddenly realized that I enjoyed taking the pictures more than the painting. Plus, the process was much faster.” Through the years, William has refined his photographic skills, and he has received widespread recognition for many of his images. These days, he primarily images landscape and scenic views from around the country as he tours with the Oak Ridge Boys. He has also become quite proficient at sharing his images on social media. “I want everyone to see what I am seeing,” he says.
