2 Cups Brown Sugar 1 Cup Unsalted Butter, Softened 2 Eggs 1 tsp. Vanilla 1 tsp. Baking Soda 2 ½ Cups Flour 3 Cups Oats (Quick cooking or regular)

12 oz. Chocolate Chips 1 Can (14oz) Sweetened Condensed Milk 2 Tbs. Unsalted Butter 1 Cup Chopped Walnuts (Optional) 1 tsp. Vanilla

Oatmeal Bar Preparation Directions:

Fudge Topping Preparation Directions

First … Mix brown sugar, butter, eggs, and 1 tsp. of vanilla in a large bowl.

First ... On the stove, heat chocolate chips, sweetened condensed milk, and butter in a 2 quart pot over LOW heat. Stir constantly until chocolate chips have melted.

Then … Stir in baking soda and flour.

Then ... Remove pot from heat and stir in the 1 tsp. of vanilla and chopped walnuts.

Finally … Stir in oats.

Recipe Provided By:

Putting it all Together: First … Press HALF of your Bar Mixture into your greased 8” x 12” baking pan. Reserve other half.

Then … Pour your Fudge Mixture over the top of the pressed Bar Mixture.

Then … Drop your reserved Bar Mixture on top of the Fudge Mixture by rounded Teaspoonfuls .

Finally … Bake until golden brown, approximately 25 to 30 minutes.

Serving Suggestions: Cut bars while warm, then refrigerate and serve chilled. Refrigerate for storage.

riginating at the turn of the 20th century in Japan, karate is defined by MerriamWebster as “a Japanese art of self-defense employing hand strikes and kicks to disable or subdue an opponent.” The first known karate school in the United States opened in 1945.

However, it wasn’t until the release of multiple martial arts films in the '60s and '70s that the sport saw a giant increase in popularity throughout the country and worldwide.

It’s a rarity to find a native Nashvillian in our ever-growing city—and suburbs—of implants but David Deaton is an exception. Born in Nashville in 1947, the 69-year-old 10-time Tennessee State Karate Champion and eighth-degree black belt was first introduced to the sport of karate many years ago through a mutual friend. Combining his passion for martial arts with an MBA in marketing, the entrepreneur opened the doors to the first of four locations of the David Deaton Karate Studios nearly five decades ago in Hendersonville in 1970; Brentwood, Lebanon and Mount Juliet followed. He is an active member of both the local chamber of commerce and Rotary International while also supporting numerous charities—among them, the American Cancer Association, the Leukemia Society and Project Sparrow, a scholarship program which raises funds to help underprivileged youth participate in martial arts.

According to Deaton, karate offers a “way of peace, mentally, physically and spiritually through better health habits” where students learn “total strength and control with a high degree of respect.” Of his students who range in skill level from novice to advanced and in ages from 4-74, he proudly says they “all are special in their own way.”
