LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy Fall! In Henderson, that means our 100-degree temperatures have finally dipped into the 90s, but we’ll take it! As the temperatures begin to cool, September has always felt like a bit of a reset for me. The return to routines and calm before the holiday storm. There’s an energy this time of year that invites us to refine our sense of style. I’ll be the first to admit we’ve all been tempted by some style trends over the years—hello to what Gen Z calls “Millennial Gray.” But I’m also old enough to know that one day you wake up and say, “I don’t even like gray, and I feel like I’m living in an asylum.” I’ve seen things I swore would never come back—like the bubble dresses of 2008—find their way back into stores, just reimagined for a different era. As I round my fourth decade, I’ve learned that the best style isn’t about chasing what’s popular; it’s about finding what makes you feel like you. It’s an heirloom passed down from a great-aunt, or a unique piece of art that speaks to you. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else—it just has to feel right. Period! True style isn’t about trends. It’s a vibe. To me, it’s about confidence, authenticity, and choosing what feels most like you. In this issue, we discover how one local designer is redefining fashion through sustainability, explore how thoughtfully designed closets can maximize both function and style, and learn how investing in your smile can build confidence that shines from within. After all, great style isn’t just about what you wear, it’s about creating a life that reflects who you are, inside and out. Thank you for reading along with us each month and for supporting the local businesses and people who make Henderson such a special place. We hope this issue inspires you to embrace your own unique style and discover something new along the way.

Southridge Dental Announced Ownership Change

Service Technicians Met by Friendly Household Pets on Duty

Under the care of Dr. Christopher Martinez, Southridge Dental continues to offer full service dental care including dental hygiene, orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and surgical care including implants. The family-focused model of care also expanded with the addition of Dr. Letitia Edwards, a board-certified pediatric dentist who has extensive experience in treating infants, children, adolescents, and patients with special needs. The priority at Southridge Dental continues to be to deliver compassionate, gentle, and honest dental care for patients of all ages.

Technicians at Sierra Air Conditioning and Plumbing are experiencing a unique form of customer feedback during residential service visits. While conducting routine maintenance and walkthroughs, company staff members frequently encounter friendly neighborhood pets eager to offer their own greetings. The service team notes that treating these domestic animals with the same respect as the homeowners remains a standard part of their daily customer care philosophy, often resulting in playful interactions that brighten the entire workday.

“NO TEXTILES THAT COME IN, LEAVE OUR FACILITY AS GARBAGE, NOT EVEN THREAD CLIPPINGS.”

As a board-certified physician, Nina Vallejo is no stranger to approaching her work with care and intention. When she founded the fashion design house Boneyard Star (boneyardstar.com), she brought the same meticulous, sustainability-focused mindset from her patient-centric medical practice to a longtime creative aspiration, turning it into a reality. “What you focus on is what you become,” Nina exclaims, and Boneyard Star is tangible proof of that. “We are here to help heal the planet, and therefore everything we do needs to aspire to be planet centric.” This is far from a trendy, eco-friendly belief to attract business; it’s a core mission carried out in every detail of each uniquely designed Boneyard Star piece. The evidence is in the single garbage bag of reduced waste that the design house discards every four to six weeks, a result of the brand’s continuous refining of their practices at the Las Vegas facility where no piece of fabric is wasted. “WITH THE INTENT OF MAINLY USING EXISTING MATERIALS FOR OUR APPAREL, WE KNEW WE COULD NOT EASILY REPLICATE PIECES, SO INSTEAD, WE DECIDED TO REALLY LEAN INTO IT AND CELEBRATE EACH PIECE AS FASHION ART.”

“No textiles that come in leave our facility as garbage, not even thread clippings,” she emphasizes. “Every fabric gets used.” For Nina, who once dreamed of going to fashion school after learning to sew her own clothes out of necessity, there is immeasurable value in preserving existing material not only to protect the planet but also to honor fashion as a true art form. This concept, she says, is lost in an industry increasingly influenced by fast fashion. The consequences of a profit-over-passion model were impossible for Nina to ignore, and Boneyard Star was officially born. She credits two statistics with shaping the couturier that exists today. “One pair of jeans takes, and contaminates, about 1,800 gallons of water to make, and there are enough clothes on the planet right now to dress the next six

generations. Not the next six years, the next six generations.” After learning those facts, she says, “I had to do something.” Each step of the Boneyard Star design process is an answer to a call for help—a methodical system handcrafted with purpose and passion for both people and the planet. “With the intent of mainly using existing materials for our apparel, we knew we could not easily replicate pieces, so instead, we decided to really lean into it and celebrate each piece as fashion art,” Nina says. From donations of large fabric remnants from local ancillary businesses to salvaging unused textiles from upholstery companies, Boneyard Star operates on moxie. “We will go and rescue [textiles] from going to the dump, which saves [companies] dumping fees and the cost of paying an CONTINUED >

employee to load and unload them,” she adds. “A win for them, a win for us and more significantly, a win for the environment.” No two pieces in the Boneyard Star collection are alike, and Nina draws inspiration from the evolution of each creation. “One pair of jeans typically takes 45 to 80 hours of work from start to finish,” she says, “including the process of sorting materials, sketching, hours of cutting and playing with textile placement, pinning and ironing and sewing.” “We might attract people with the uniqueness of our garments, but we hope that when they see the details and feel the weight and quality of our pieces, they will want to have them in their wardrobe for many years to come, and maybe even pass them down to their future generations, like art.”

If there is one thing Tina Ruiz, owner of Radiant Smiles, is not in her line of work, it’s naive. She knows that for many, a visit to the dentist ranks high on their list of least favorite things to do. In fact, it is why she and her team are passionate about transformative dental care. “At Radiant Smiles, we’ve elevated the dental experience by combining luxury, convenience and exceptional clinical care,” Tina says. It is a commitment to the Las Vegas community 20 years and counting, supported by the most advanced technology, comprehensive services and a highly-trained, welcoming staff. Each visit to any of their eight locations across southern Nevada is “more like visiting a luxury spa than a traditional office,” where modern care meets reimagined comfort and patients are partners in their journey to healthy living.

HEALTHY HABITS FOR EASIER VISITS

While daily brushing and flossing are essential for preventing cavities and maintaining good oral hygiene, Tina stresses the

importance of not missing routine dental visits and being proactive about oral health. This not only makes the experience less stressful but also allows providers to detect invisible issues before they become bigger challenges. “The mouth is the gateway to your body’s health, and dentists are often the first healthcare providers to recognize early signs of medical conditions,” explains Tina, adding that every examination includes an analysis to check for things like oral cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. “Early detection can make a meaningful difference, which is why routine dental visits are so important.” Healthy oral habits at home, combined with clean eating, not only translate to healthy teeth and gums but a healthier relationship overall with your dental provider. “The truth is, even if you have perfect home care, you still need regular dental visits every six months,” and Radiant Smiles makes visits that people can actually look forward to. “Your toothbrush and floss simply cannot remove hardened tartar (calculus) that builds up over time,” Tina emphasizes. “THE MOUTH IS THE GATEWAY TO YOUR BODY’S HEALTH.”

“Only a professional dental cleaning can remove these deposits before they lead to cavities, gum disease, bone loss or other health problems.” The best approach in oral health is taking care of the essentials and letting your trusted provider take care of the rest. “Think of your dentist as a partner in your health. The best results come from combining great home care with regular professional care– not replacing one with the other.”

MORE REASONS TO SMILE

For some, practicing good habits is not enough on its own to prevent oral issues from arising. Thankfully, there are a number of preventative treatments available to help patients who are more susceptible–all of which Radiant Smiles offers.

30

LOCA L’S CH OICE | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

“Flouride helps strengthen tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to decay and even helping reverse very early stages of cavities before they require a filling,” Tina says of adding professional fluoride to every cleaning. Gum disease patients can benefit from laser therapy, which helps to minimize bacteria trapped beneath the gums. It is one of the least invasive treatments that decreases inflammation, promotes healing and improves gum health. Additionally, Radiant Smiles helps those wanting to improve their smile with orthodontic treatment, but Tina emphasizes that this delivers more than a straighter smile. “Properly aligned teeth are easier to brush and floss, which reduces the risk of cavities and gum disease.” Wisdom teeth removal is not always necessary because a patient is in pain. Many times, removal is vital so that issues like crowding or impacting are corrected before they pose more serious complications and “is often the healthiest long-term option.”

HELPING YOU, HELP YOU

Tina is proud of how Radiant Smiles prioritizes treating every patient with a personalized plan and encourages others to find a dentist who works, not for, but with them. “The more we get to know you and your smile, the more proactive we can be in helping you prevent problems before they start.”

The first room many people visit each morning isn’t the kitchen or the living room. It’s the closet, setting the tone for everything that follows. Led by Owner and Lead Designer Alfredo Argulles, and his brothers Alesandro and Emanuele, Custom Closet Systems is a family-owned and operated Las Vegas company that has earned a reputation for creating sophisticated storage solutions that balance beauty with practicality. Each project begins with an understanding of how the homeowner lives, resulting in spaces that feel natural, refined, and distinctly their own. As Alfredo explains, “Style isn’t just about how something looks; it’s about how it functions in your daily life. What sets us apart at Custom Closet Systems is our refusal to use a one-size-fits-all approach. We treat every

closet as a blank canvas and a highly personal reflection of the client.” Rather than starting with measurements alone, Alfredo begins by learning how each client moves through their day, a philosophy that shapes every design. “When I sit down with a client to design the ‘perfect’ closet, I don’t just count their shoes, I ask them about their morning routine,” he says. “Are they rushing out the door to early meetings? Do they prefer to see everything at a glance, or keep things tucked away? The perfect closet is a seamless blend of Las Vegas luxury and effortless organization. We combine high-end aesthetics with smart ergonomics so that every time they walk in, it feels like stepping into their own private boutique.” CONTINUED >

Beyond beautiful finishes, the company’s guiding purpose centers on improving daily living. As Alfredo explains, “Our mission is simple: to transform chaotic spaces into areas of calm and elegance. Our core values are rooted in integrity, precision craftsmanship, and hyper-personalized service. We live and work right here in Las Vegas, so building lasting relationships based on trust with our neighbors means everything to us. If a design doesn’t genuinely improve a client’s daily life, we haven’t done our job.” What began with custom closets has grown into a fullscale home organization studio, with Custom Closet Systems now creating everything from flawless wardrobe suites and home offices to garages, pantries, and media centers that reflect the character of the home. Technology also plays an essential role in the experience. Detailed 3D renderings allow homeowners to explore every

detail before construction, ensuring the finished area reflects their style and needs. Even during industry-wide supply challenges, the team prioritized dependable local supplier relationships to maintain quality and consistent timelines without compromising their commitment to stellar workmanship, while plans include expanding the use of sustainable materials and smart-home features throughout its designs. Technology and craftsmanship may continue to shape the future of the company, but the final moments of each project remain the most memorable. “Without a doubt, it’s the reveal moment,” says Alfredo. “There’s a specific look a client gets when they see their finished space for the first time. It’s a mix of relief and pure excitement. Knowing that we’ve taken a major source of daily stress and turned it into a beautiful, organized sanctuary is incredibly fulfilling.”

H AP PY H OU R | FO O D + BE VE RAGE

As the season transitions into fall, it still features the warm, sunny days of summer but nights start to drop into the crisp temperatures. That leaves us in the limbo of wanting cool, refreshing drinks part of the time but also craving the deeper, spice-infused flavors of autumn. This recipe for apple cider sangria is the perfect blending of the seasons, leaving you feeling both refreshed and warmed through the deep flavors and interesting hints of spice. It’s a great drink to add to any dinner party, cocktail gathering, back deck after-hours get-together, or birthday bash. Here’s what you need to make the perfect mid-season cocktail to enhance whatever event you have planned.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• • • • • •

Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.

S T Y L E T H AT GI V E S B AC K A LOOK INSIDE THE AWARD-WINNING “ASSISTING LIVES IN LAS VEGAS THRIFT SHOP”

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATHY TOPP

M UST SE E | L I FE + C ULTU RE

In a city known for luxury shopping and designer labels, a popular Las Vegas thrift shop offers fashion lovers the thrill of the find while making a meaningful impact in the community. Located at 6446 W. Charleston Blvd., the Assisting Lives in Las Vegas Thrift Shop (ALLV.org) is a destination for savvy shoppers seeking everything from everyday essentials to high-end designer labels. Unlike traditional retail stores, every purchase supports the nonprofit’s philanthropic programs that help local children and families in need.

“We get spectacular donations from the community,” said Mary Rautenstrauch, Thrift Shop Chair and one of the nonprofit’s more than 350 members who volunteer their time with Assisting Lives in Las Vegas. “We receive brand-new items with tags still attached, designer clothing, beautiful accessories and unique home goods. You never know what you’re going to find.” One of the shop’s most popular attractions is its Top Drawersection, a curated collection of premium brands and designer pieces. Member volunteers carefully examine every item, selecting only the best clothing, shoes and accessories. “Top Drawer is for higher-end brands and exceptional quality,” explained Darla Gustaitis, who oversees the section. “We inspect everything closely and make sure it looks nearly new. We want customers to feel like they’re getting something truly special.” The selection regularly includes sought-after labels such as Coach, Tommy Bahama, Chico’s, and Marc Jacobs. Shoppers have even scored Jimmy Choo shoes and Dior dresses. Patrons can often put together complete outfits, from clothing and shoes to handbags and jewelry, at a fraction of retail prices. The shop’s boutique atmosphere surprises many first-time visitors and is one of the reasons it has been named Best Thrift Shop by the Las Vegas ReviewJournal for nine consecutive years. “Shoppers are amazed by how clean and organized it is,” Mary said. That attention to detail has helped cultivate a loyal customer base. Some visitors stop by multiple times each week because “new” merchandise is put on the sales floor daily. Shoppers are also surprised to learn there are no paid staff members at the shop. “We’re here because we want to make a difference,” said Mary. “It comes from the heart.”

Revenue from the thrift shop helps fund the nonprofit’s philanthropic programs, including Our School Boutique, which each year provides thousands of Clark County School District students with a week’s worth of brand-new clothing during a special field trip to the nonprofit’s headquarters. “For the past 50 years, our members have shown up for students and families in this community. Every day, we make an impact in the community where we live,” said Assisting Lives in Las Vegas President Lilian Xu. The Thrift Shop also works to ensure donations benefit the community in multiple ways. Items that cannot be sold in the store are distributed to partner organizations serving families, youth, and individuals experiencing hardships. “We try not to throw anything away,” Darla said. “Knowing that donations continue helping people throughout our community is one of the things I love most.” “We care about our community and it shows,” says Mary. “When people shop here, they are helping their neighbors.” The Assisting Lives in Las Vegas Thrift Shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., welcoming shoppers looking for one-of-a-kind finds while supporting local children and families.

THE NEW RULES

Modern Home Style

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES | ARTICLE BY KALI KASPRZYK HOME OF RYAN AND HILLARY BADER For years, the rule was simple. Pick a palette, pick an aesthetic, and let it carry through every room. The allwhite kitchen led to the all-white living room led to the all-white everything. That era is over. The most interesting homes right now are doing something braver. They’re letting each room hold its own mood. What ties them together isn’t a single look. It’s the materials they keep coming back to: warm brass, sculptural lighting, marble, stained wood, and quiet neutrals holding it all together. We toured one home that gets it exactly right, and pulled out ideas worth borrowing.

2. SCULPTUR AL CALM One bold gesture in a quiet room. Everything in this great room is whispering, from the cream walls to the linen sectional to the chandelier’s delicate brass rings. And then a tree, reaching toward the coffered ceiling like it grew there on purpose. When the rest of the room is quiet, the boldest thing you can put in it is something alive.

1. RESORT ENERGY Outdoor rooms designed with the rigor of interiors. This isn’t a backyard. It’s a destination. From the lined-up lounge chairs to the scalloped umbrellas to the greenstriped pillows repeating across the deck. The lesson here is to stop treating outdoor furniture as an afterthought. Pick a palette and commit.

3. MOODY MODERN Dark dining rooms are back, and better than ever. Bold taupe walls, an oval black table, sleek chairs, and an oversized round mirror standing in for art. The bright, airy dining room had its decade. Now bring on the supper club.

4. WAR M MODER N The all-white kitchen meets warm wood. Cream cabinetry stays, because the light it gives you is hard to beat. But the island gets a stained wood treatment that grounds the whole space. Brass pendants and hardware add glow. Velvet stools soften the lines. This is the kitchen the next decade is building toward.

6. BUILT FOR PLAY Rooms that don’t apologize for being fun. A game table under a crystal chandelier. A leather club chair next to a telescope. A theater tucked in around the corner. The best entertaining spaces are the ones built for actual use, not just for looking at.

5. THE JEWEL BOX Small spaces, big swing. Antiqued mercury glass, a brass faucet, fluted glass cabinets, golden pulls on crisp white shakers. The idea is to treat your tucked-away corners (bars, powder rooms, butler’s pantries) as the place to take your most theatrical swing. The smaller the room, the bolder you can be.

7. COLOR COCOON Saturated color in rooms meant for rest. Deep sage-spruce walls, ivory bedding, an antiqued mirror catching the shutter light. Proof that calm doesn’t have to mean beige. Color, used right, is the most restful thing you can put in a room. Find your shade and let it hold you.

Different rooms, different moods, one home. The new rule, it turns out, is that there doesn’t have to be one. S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/HE N D E R S O N
