Kids & Pets Issue

I hope this letter finds you in good health and enjoying your summer!
Kids and Pets! Yes, August is the month that most kids return to school and summer starts to wind down. This issue is always one of my favorites. I suppose because of the immense joy that children bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities.
Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best for Henderson’s kids in this issue.
Personally, I have three kids that are now grown and out of the house, but I remember all those summers we spent in Newport Beach when they were kids. They all loved the Boardwalk, the Balboa Fun Zone, and going to dinner at Mutt Lynch’s and weekend brunch at Sharkey’s.
Secondarily, who could forget pets? Their special kind of companionship can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love and the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.
And then let’s talk about pets!! I call my wife the Animal Whisperer. When she gets home from work, she has a parade of two dogs and two cats following her around like loyal Subjects. She insists we adopt rescue animals when we decide to bring a new family member home. If she had her way, we would likely have twice as many pets as we do! But nothing gives you greater happiness in life than taking your dog for a walk and rubbing their belly at night as they lie on the couch next to you.
What children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention, and intention shape how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra into the children and pets in your life this month.
Cheers!

As parents, the familiar saying “The days are long, but the years are short” rings true, especially when you blink and your child is on the doorstep of their teenage years.
As if this stage doesn't come with enough challenges, changing hormones cause many teens to develop issues with their skin in the form of acne, rosacea, eczema, and more. And the shame and embarrassment can sometimes feel worse than the condition. If your child escapes these magical years blemish free, consider them lucky. Yet it’s very normal and can be treated with the right products and routine(s). According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association, approximately 85 percent of people between the ages of 12 and 24 experience at least minor acne. So, anyone experiencing skin conditions can feel they are in good company.
Parents in the valley are fortunate to have the LUX Dermatology practice located right here in Henderson. LUX Dermatology physicians and staff have a genuine passion for skin care, offering services for kids, teens, and adults, including acne care, Botox® and dermal filler application, and microneedling.
Erica Moran, PA-C, is a Certified Physician Assistant at LUX Dermatology who works alongside talented doctors and staff to offer these services and more. Erica graduated from Touro University Nevada-Henderson and
earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Gerontology from the University of Nevada Reno.
Erica regularly works with teens and tweens and has offered advice on how to tackle complex complexions and maintain healthy ones.
It’s important to be discerning about over-thecounter products, says Erica. “The myriad of products found in beauty aisles are made for the mass population and don’t take into account differing genders, skin types, climates, age ranges, and more.” And Erica warns that our Nevada sunshine can wreak havoc on skin, no matter the age. “A daily SPF is a must in routines whether it’s sunny, cloudy, or even raining.”
Speaking of routines, Erica says less is more when it comes to the number of products. A gentle cleanser, a moisturizer to protect the skin barrier, and finishing with an SPF is all you need. Generally, she says that it’s best to steer clear of those multi-step processes that are popular on social media. Not to mention all the extra time that it takes when it’s not necessary.
For overall takeaways, LUX Dermatology’s Erica Moran says it’s important to remember that teens experiencing skin issues are not alone, and while it can feel overwhelming, there are many available solutions and treatments.
“When over-the-counter methods don’t work, dry skin further, or aggravate an issue, it’s time to see a dermatologist.” Erica Moran, PA-C notes that while one person’s acne may look similar to another, everyone’s skin is different and can require a customized approach. “You will spend more time buying and trying everything at the drugstore than you would consulting a dermatologist and receiving a customized treatment plan.”
“Whatever you do, don’t pick at blemishes. You can end up with further inflammation and scarring.” She says that she’s not opposed to pimple patches if people want to try them, yet leaving blemishes alone is always the best method.
For those who say they only wear SPF outside or at the pool, Erica warns this is a mistake. “It may be surprising to hear that sitting in a car or a room full of windows can cause damage. Applying SPF is a must in the everyday routine for all ages.”
“Pay attention to the percentage of ingredients included in over-the-counter products. For instance, there’s a huge difference between 1 percent and 5 percent benzoyl peroxide and can cause severe drying and irritation.”
ERICA MORAN PA-CMy training and experience make me well-equipped to give you the peace of mind you deserve. I hope that having me on your side gives you confidence that the things you work so hard for are protected.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY VISIT AUSTIN AND PROVIDED
The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to get away!
It’s no secret that people are flocking to Austin. What’s not to love about the warm weather, vast culinary scene and the ability to recreationally paddle board through the city limits? Add to that the attractive walkability it offers, letting you fuel your explorative side amid the hustle and bustle of the downtown scene without ever needing a ride.
Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. Kayak, hike, bike and swim your way around the great Austin outdoors and enjoy one of the city’s most fantastic offerings that inspires people to get outside and play together.
When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public. Enjoy the architectural details, white-glove service, in-room Austin purveyor displays, and sophisticated, Southern-style meals.
Speaking of meals, Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. It all started with Franklin Barbecue, helmed by Aaron Franklin who was the first pitmaster to win a James Beard award for Best Chef, which was inducted into the
American Royal Hall of Fame and was credited for ushering in a new era of food into the city. Austin’s slow-cooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss.
Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th floor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu.
Perhaps a hidden gem is Austin’s mark on the forefront of the booming food truck scene, a foundation for famed, award-winning chefs getting started before getting the funding to open their own brick and mortars. Whether you indulge in one in a gas station parking lot or parked next to a music venue, you’ll find them all over town, serving up a variety of dishes to be devoured.
But first you should start your day with a cup of joe from Jo’s Coffee. Known for its iconic “i love you so much” mural-clad exterior on South Congress Avenue, patrons come for the hot coffee, good food, cold beer and people-watching. The creative menu includes everything from its house blend to its Cowboy Cookie Cold Brew you can pair with a hash brown or local-favorite “migas” taco.
As for Austin’s retail and local maker scene, the possibilities are endless and elevated. 2ND Street District boasts a mix of boutiques and shops to get your fashion fix and new home decor. For the gentlemen, embrace the full district experience, shopping League of Rebels , a bespoke experience with tailor made lifestyle wear, or Bonobos , the pioneers of custom fit chinos. Then enjoy a fresh shave from Austin’s premier Finley’s Barber Shop
For the women, shop local and find the perfect gift for yourself or someone you love from Luxe Apothetique, then drape yourself in artisan jewelry from Eliza Page before falling for the modern designs from Blu Dot.
Follow some retail therapy, head over to Upstairs Circus , a unique concept where DIY meets the bar; pick your project, enjoy a libation, create a masterpiece and be merry.
Or shop The Domain district in North Austin, a newer shopping center offering upscale hotels and fantastic restaurants. Shop luxury brands such as Saint Laurent Paris and Gucci and reward yourself with sweet and savory bites from a multitude of eateries. Nearby is the home of the new Austin FC Major League Soccer team, so you can take in a professional soccer match as part of your metropolitan experience, cheering on the club team partially owned by Matthew McConaughy. Even if you’re not a soccer fan, the energy is incredible, and the stadium is a stunner.
Other Austin districts worth checking out include well-known South Congress Avenue . You can stroll boutiques and additional eateries and check out the uniquely converted bungalows that now offer day and nightlife entertainment destinations.
While East Austin is a larger neighborhood, the depth of culture here is noteworthy. Six Square is Austin’s premier Black Cultural District near the beautiful grounds of the Texas State Cemetery.
And, as one would expect, you’ll find a plethora of great restaurants such as local favorites la Barbecue and Bird Bird Biscuit that was just listed as one of Yelp’s Top 5 restaurants to eat at in America. Now let’s talk about live music. Whatever your scene is, you’ll find it here and, well, everywhere. From your airport arrival, to the open air around you, and then hopping from neighborhood to neighborhood, Austin is filled with live music. You’ll find musicians performing at world-famous festivals, intimate clubs, coffee houses, and even the corner taqueria. With hundreds of live music venues, you have plenty of options available to soak up the sounds.
ACL Live at The Moody Theater is home to the beloved Austin City Limits television show and hosts about 100 concerts year round. Tour the venue, select your show and find everything from country to rock, hip-hop, rap, jazz and blues.
With its true passion for its unparalleled live music scene, its championing of local creators and small business owners, and its celebration of its enriching arts and culture offerings, Austin avows a personality all its own and should be next on your playlist. We love it so much!
In the moments between fishing in our pond and swimming in the pool, our family will celebrate birthdays and have outdoor parties. True to form, I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way. My beach ball garland is a spin-off of the traditional balloon garland. Everyone uses balloon garlands… so let’s make one out of beach balls instead! Everyone serves a birthday cake… how about one carved out of a watermelon for a crazy twist?? I hope you join me in the making of these fun additions to a party!
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LEANN PARKERHave you ever noticed that when blown up, beach balls have a little plastic loop that forms where they are blown up and sealed? It makes for the perfect place to string twine through and use as an outdoor “balloon” garland! String it up, add some extra beach balls to the pool or yard and you have all the party decorations you need!
• 2 packs of assorted sized beach balls (assorted 20”, 16” and 12” for a total of 36)
• 1 pack of mini beach balls (5” sized, total of 25)
• Thin rope or twine
• Air pump
1. Using an air pump, blow up all the beach balls... It takes a while!
2. Arrange inflated beach balls in a line on the ground, alternating sizes as you go.
3. Starting on one end, thread your string or twine through the blow loop of each beach ball until you reach the end.
4. Tie each end of your beach ball garland to a post or tack to a wall.
A cake that you could eat for breakfast! Made only of fruit and (if you want to go real crazy) some fresh mint and whipped cream too. A few years ago we started making watermelon cakes for our summer birthday celebrations due to one of our little ones suffering from food allergies. In order to make a cake that even she could enjoy, the watermelon cake was born in our lives. Even if you don’t have family or guests with food allergies, this cake is a thriller and loved by all!
• 2 large watermelons
• Assortment of berries and fruit
• 4 wooden skewers
• Toothpicks
• Whipped cream (optional)
• Fresh mint (optional)
Instructions
1. Prep both watermelons by cutting off the rinds and sculpting to create a cylinder shape with a flat top and bottom. Make the bottom cylinder bigger and the top cylinder slightly smaller.
2. Stack your smaller watermelon on top of the larger using wooden skewers to support the center.
3. Use assorted berries and fruit to decorate the outside of your watermelon cake. For the sides of the cake, use toothpicks to help the berries stay in place.
4. Serve alone or with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.
“I love creating something traditional in an untraditional way.”
