As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing. In this issue, we highlight ways to introduce a new baby or a new pet to your existing pet and Q&As with some leading medical experts to ensure your children get the dental care and eye care they need. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love. Lastly, the month of August marks Henderson City Lifestyle’s one-year anniversary! It has been quite a year meeting so many new people in the community and learning about their lives and business. We have participated in fundraisers with our partners and had the privilege of meeting new people and attending many events. It has been a great honor to bring our publication to the community, and I look forward to doing so in the years to come.

Beloved Pet, Meet Your New Best Friend When a new baby comes along, be prepared for some changes in your pet’s behavior. Any major life change requires an adjustment period, and pets are no different. We had our first grandchild in December and prepared Giorgio, our Maltipoo, by letting him smell the baby’s blanket before introducing her, as the treatment staff at West Russell Animal Hospital recommended. You can also apply baby lotion to your hands to familiarize your pet with the scent. Playing YouTube videos of a baby crying helped accustom our dog to the noise, but nothing prepared him for the unbridled joy he displayed when they finally met.

We knew the first encounters would be very exciting for Giorgio, so we were advised to introduce him in a controlled environment, leashed and at a distance. His good behavior was rewarded, and we gave him extra love and attention whenever the baby went down for a nap or went home. But if there’s anyone in your family who doesn’t like the idea of animals and babies, keep the interactions to a time when they aren’t around to escalate the situation. Setting up the baby’s nursery early also allowed Giorgio to adjust to the change. Animals need consistency, and the slightest deviations can cause stress. When the room was ready, we used it as a play area before the baby came over so he would associate CONTINUED >

it with something positive. You could try wearing a baby carrier around the house to let your pet see that silhouette. Our dog isn’t quite two years old, so he gets excited very easily. When the baby spent a weekend with us, Giorgio was alert to her every sound. If she stirred during the night, he went to the foot of our bed, peered into her crib, made sure she was okay, and looked to us for reassurance. However, older dogs may be indifferent whenever the baby is near and will simply walk away when they hear its cries. A few years back, we had a Rat Terrier who needed a companion, so we went to a local shelter and adopted a sweet Miniature Pinscher. We kept the dogs leashed around each other for a few days, fed them in different parts of the house, and watched as they slowly gravitated towards one another. When we rescued an adult cat a few years later, she was the boss from the moment she came home, and the dogs always kept their distance. Cats need free reign so they can safely escape, if necessary, especially if another pet shows signs of aggression. Our dogs always responded to squeaky toys, and we could redirect their behavior by distracting them. Your pet will pick up on your behavior. Calm invitations to interact and rewards for behaving gently around a baby or a new pet will make the transition easier. Continue to provide them with mental and physical space to adjust, especially cats. Keep a gate in between baby and pets until you’re completely comfortable with their behavior. And no matter how gentle they are, always keep a watchful eye.

Dr. Barton Foutz is the oldest of 10 children born in Japan, while his father served in the Air Force as a dentist. He moved with his parents at the age of two back to Las Vegas and grew up here. He attended Chaparral High school and learned much about work and dentistry from his dentist, father, and hardworking mother. After an undergraduate stint at BYU and an LDS mission served back in Japan, he graduated from the University of Pacific dental school. By this time, he had met and married his companion and wife of 37 years, JoAnne. After a 1-year General Practice residency at the Salt Lake City VA, they moved back to Las Vegas. Over the next 13 years, they welcomed three little girls and two little boys into their family as they built up their dental practice together. They now enjoy the addition of three sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and eight grandchildren. We asked this family man and local dentist about child dental visits and more.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN TO GET REGULAR DENTAL EXAMS? As children grow and develop in so many ways, it is important for the dental professional to see them twice a year. This is important to find and treat decay and help with dental hygiene. We also need to evaluate for spacing and growth issues so intervention orthodontically or orthopedically can be recommended as needed.
DO YOU RECOMMEND A DENTAL EXAM BEFORE GOING BACK TO SCHOOL? Getting an exam before returning to school may be a convenient date for parents to remember to have this important service done. The most important principle is regular, consistent dental care from a trained dental professional. If it works best just before the school year starts, then by all means, please schedule it as such. Other regular intervals work just as well from a health maintenance standpoint.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN TO GET REGULAR EYE EXAMS? Having good vision is often overlooked when your child is struggling in school, but not being able to focus on the board or school assignments can make a difference in their grades. During a pediatric eye examination, conditions such as sight and vision problems can also be detected and treated early. Additionally, diseases and conditions of the eye can develop at any age, so it is a good idea to schedule a complete eye exam each year around the time school begins. WHAT CAN A PARENT EXPECT WHEN THEY BRING THEIR CHILD IN FOR THEIR FIRST EYE APPOINTMENT? Pediatric eye care exams can include any of the following tests: INSPECTION OF THE EYE – we will inspect the eyes and eyelids and test various muscle movements. The pupils will also be checked, and the reflection of light from the back of the eye will be evaluated. CORNEAL LIGHT REFLEX TEST – we will use a small flashlight to look at the front of the eye or cornea where light is reflected. Ideally, the light should be in sharp focus and centered on both pupils. COVER TEST – This test determines if the eyes are mis-

NAOMIE WARNER In light of Henderson City Lifestyle magazine’s “Kids and Pets” issue, we wanted to highlight a local medical expert to help parents in their preparations for their students going back to school and what they need to do to ensure their children can see what they need to learn. Dr. Naomie Warner is a Pediatric Ophthalmologist with Nevada Eye Physicians — an ophthalmology practice with eight locations in Southern Nevada. She is a board-certified, dual-fellowship trained ophthalmologist. She specializes in pediatric ophthalmology and the treatment of misalignment of the eyes, double vision, amblyopia, and other pediatric conditions such as congenital cataracts and glaucoma or neuro-ophthalmic conditions. Here are her thoughts on what parents should be aware of for their children’s eye care.
aligned. While the child is looking into a bright light, the ophthalmologist covers one eye at a time and looks for a shift in the eyes. A shift is called strabismus. ACUITY TEST – An age-appropriate visual acuity test may use an eye chart, and the child reads lines of characters, numbers, or letters. Children who cannot read or talk are also tested with Teller acuity cards, which allow the examiner to determine a reliable vision without the patient saying anything at all due to something called preferential looking. Each eye will be tested separately.

WHAT IS THE MOST COMMON COMPLAINT YOU HEAR FROM CHILDREN AS IT RELATES TO BEING IN THE CLASSROOM OR DOING SCHOOLWORK, AND HOW DO YOU HELP SOLVE THE ISSUE? Many children are on screens more these days for schoolwork either while at school or for homework at home. While most of the time, screens are not a bad thing, they can cause blurred vision after an extended amount of screen use. This can be due to dryness in the eyes from a lack of blinking or refreshing our tears. Children often complain of blurred vision or slight eye pain after prolonged screen use. As long as the exam is normal, I recommend taking breaks about every 20 minutes and blinking extra to refresh the tears, using artificial tears if the child will tolerate eye drops, or using less non-schoolrelated screen time in general, if possible. Never underestimate getting an eye exam as part of overall health and wellness checks. Especially if someone else in the family wears glasses or has any eye problems. Oftentimes, children’s eye problems are preventable with proper diagnoses but are missed due to a lack of an exam until it’s too late.
