Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals its beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors and in Nevada - we need to enjoy the outdoors while we can! As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There are a multitude of diverse spots around town and out of town to discover. Whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery, or a niche boutique hotel or casino for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. In the spirit of EXPLORE, my wife and I recently found a new place to explore. The island of Bonaire, which is located about 50 miles north of the Venezuelan coastline. Bonaire is a scuba divers paradise. The island is entirely set up so divers can grab a tank of air or three per day from their hotel and drive up and down the coast to a multitude of dive spots, all marked on a map of the island. Stop, throw on your gear, and dive for an hour until your tank runs low. Then move on to the next spot on the map and do it all over again. So, in this spirit of Exploration, we invite you to enjoy this month’s issue of Henderson City Lifestyle. Las Vegas Irish Rugby Club Attracts Big Crowd for Big Win The Las Vegas Irish Rugby club recently hosted the Scottsdale Blues Rugby club at Sunridge Park in Henderson. The Las Vegas Irish dominated the game with more than 100 fans cheering. Neighboring baseball games heard the screaming and fun and came over to watch, doubling the crowd. The final score was 85 for the Las Vegas Irish and 22 for the visiting team.

Camp to Belong Volunteers Needed St. Jude’s Ranch for Children’s Sibling Preservation Program sends children to Camp to Belong every summer.

This is a special camp as the attendees are siblings separated in foster care. They live in different homes throughout the year, but for this one week they get to eat, sleep, and play together to build on their sibling bond. My two favorite things in life are learning and traveling. My husband and I usually go scuba diving during the holidays, and we had looked for the ideal spot to celebrate the end of 2021. We heard that Bonaire is “the diver’s paradise.” Upon research, we discovered that Bonaire is a beautiful island in the southern Caribbean just a few miles off the coast of Venezuela, where its currency is the US Dollar. We decided that was the location for our 2021 holiday getaway. Here are some fun facts about beautiful Bonaire: there are only two towns on the island, the capital Kralendijk (creh-len-dike) and Rincón. Kralendijk has grocery stores, banks, offices, and restaurants/ bars that are open daily. You can easily spot the tourist information store as soon as you get to the downtown area. Most restaurants do not open every day of the week, and a lot of them only serve dinner; knowing this ahead of time can help you make plans accordingly. The best months to scuba dive in Bonaire are September and October because there is very little to no wind, which allows for very clear waters. Rincón is a lot quieter than Krelendijk and has the best place to try the island’s local dish, stew. Posada Para Mira is the place to go if that’s what you are craving. The most popular stews that they serve are goat and iguana. Be mindful that this place is only open on certain days of the week. Even though Dutch is the native language in Bonaire, Papiamento is the most widely spread language spoken. You can also communicate in English and Spanish, if necessary. We stayed at The Bellafonte Luxury Oceanfront Hotel, an oceanfront complex with amazing views. Waiting for us in our room was a chilled bottle of bubbly and a wonderful arrangement of lush local

flowers that lasted the entire two weeks we were there! The staff at The Bellafonte was extremely helpful by making reservations in the best restaurants around the island and helping us with anything else that we needed or wanted. Our diving trips have always included guided boat dives that take us to gorgeous locations in the middle of the ocean. In Bonaire, however, diving is completely different, and that is what makes it “the diver’s paradise.” As we drove around the island, we realized there was no such thing as “boat diving.” People actually park their cars by the shore, gear up, and simply walk over to the water to dive. Bonaire is all about “shore-diving.” Being our first time on the island, we used the scuba shop Dive Friends Bonaire to ensure we were taken to some of the best spots. Our two favorites were the Salt Pier and the Oil Slick, where we saw so many types, sizes, and colors of sea creatures. There were turtles, octopus, queen of hearts, barracudas, parrotfish, swordfish, squid, sea urchins, and dolphins, just to name a few. The Salt Pier is a great diving spot because the fish are gathered around the platform’s structure at a shallow depth, where the water is usually crystal clear. Bonaire is not just about diving, though. During our time there, we discovered incredible restaurants with cuisines from all over the world. Sebastian’s, an oceanfront luxurious restaurant with exquisite dishes and an extensive wine list should be kept for a special night. The view from Sebastian’s is simply amazing. Be sure to get there at sunset to fully enjoy it. Downtown Bonaire also has great restaurants to explore, and La Cantina was the one that stood out to us. It has a fun and casual atmosphere that offers tasty (and dangerous) drinks! The Passion Mojito was my favorite! Depending on what time of year you plan on visiting Bonaire, make sure to always make reservations. Otherwise, you will miss out.

The island also has beach clubs where you can just chill and lounge. The Ocean Oasis has a great atmosphere, food, and drinks. Staying at The Bellafonte, you will have perks like complimentary shuttle, bubbly, and VIP seats by the water. Bonaire has a huge park at the top of the island, the Washington-Slagbaai National Park. It can only be visited by car, and you have two loops to choose from. The longer one can take between 2.5 to 4 hours to complete, and it takes you around the upper edge of the island, where you can see the settlers’ ruins, interesting geographical formations, goats, natural springs, and, of course, diving spots. If you don’t want to spend that much time exploring the park, you can choose the shorter path that takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. We recommend that you drive a 4-wheel car for this visit because the terrain is rough. The park has absolutely no service, so make sure that your car has a full tank of gas and that you have food and water. Two other activities made our vacation in Bonaire memorable. One was flamingo spotting all around the island. The flamingos look majestic with their long thin legs and beautiful vivid pink feathers. Bonaire flamingos have an intense pink coloring due to what they eat - small pink salt shrimps and micro-organisms in the water that have turned pink by algae, bacteria, and beta-carotene. Their beauty is hypnotizable. Bonaire has one of four sanctuaries in the world where flamingos breed, the Pekelmeer, which means “salt lake” in Dutch. Tourists are not allowed in the area, but you can watch them on the side of the road using binoculars. The Cadushy Distillery in Rincón offers tastings of liquors, rum, gin, vodka, and whiskey, all made from the island cactus. In fact, Bonaire has the only cactus-vodka in the world, whereas the other vodkas are made of rye or potatoes. It definitely has a distinct taste to it. Now that you know, what are you waiting for? It’s no surprise America’s City of Lights is home to premier energy efficiency company, Sol-Up. A highlight of the conference is the annual Solar Games, a competition showcasing the expertise of leading national and international solar efficiency companies. The annual competition works by pitting top talent from leading U.S. solar companies against one another to see who can install a solar-plus-storage system based on the highest quality, safety, and speed. Consisting of three rounds and judged by a panel of experts from leaders in the industry, including the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners and Solar Energy International, the competition tasked teams with building on- and off-grid residential solar and storage systems. Defending their previous championship, once again Sol-Up came in first place and was named the 2022 Solar Games Champion. When it comes to providing commercial and residential solar efficiency on the west coast, Sol-Up reigns supreme in both Southern and Northern Nevada. Any chef creating extraordinary dishes is about enthusiasm and love of the craft; that is the situation in most cases. However, a husband-and-wife team in Henderson has taken this passion to a whole new level. Gabriele and Veronica Babini are about love, purpose, and creativity that you can taste in every bite at their Pizza Heroes restaurant. From the outside, it appears like a typical pizza establishment. Upon entering, that image disappears with glimmering marble tables and countertops accented by white patterned flooring that reminds one of visiting Rome itself. But there is more, so much more. How about handcrafted authentic pizza with no sugar or salt in the crust or the sauce? Taking a seat at our marble table, we met a wonderful, hard-working couple. Veronica is a native of Verona, an Italian law school graduate summa cum laude, and has traveled extensively worldwide. She eventually moved to the United States. After having her first child, Veronica developed a deep interest in baking. By studying with the great bakers, Chef Jeffrey Hamelman and Peter Reinhart, Veronica developed her own “natural-style” pizza with their significant influence. As Veronica so eloquently states, “I make pizza as pizza should be.”

Gabriele was born and raised in Rome. During his long career, he rose through the hospitality industry ranks as a food and beverage executive, having worked for many 5 Stars Hotels and Casinos on five continents. The culinary stars aligned for Gabriele and Veronia when they met and fell in love in Dubai. In March 2019, due to the COVID shutdown, Gabriele was laid off from his job in the casino industry. He decided to open a little pizzeria with his wife despite the pandemic. “Pizza Heroes was established... where the ingredients are the heroes,” they said laughing. After tasting many pizzas in the area, they were not impressed and wanted to showcase the best quality food that was true to their Italian roots. “We use no sugar or salt in our crust and sauce. We only use the finest tomatoes we can source with perfect ripeness,” said Gabriele. Veronica explained that the sweetness comes from the ripened tomatoes and the saltiness from the cheese, and nothing needs to be added. “99 percent of the pizza we taste-tested had brown sugar and salt added to the dough. The dough loses its elasticity by adding the sugar,” Gabriele added. “We wanted to make a healthier, delicious pizza. It is particularly desirable for those who have diabetes and those concerned about sugar intake.”
