Stepping inside “Veristic Aesthetics,” you immediately feel a sense of calm and Zen. This boutique med spa in Henderson feels a million miles away from a frantic and chaotic hospital’s emergency room. The kind of working environment that’s very familiar for Veristic Aesthetics’ co-owners, Dr. Jessica Leduc and Mandy Griffin. “We both work in emergency medicine. That’s how we met working together in the same team,” said Griffin, who works as a physician assistant with the Valley Health System. “With what we do (Dr. Leduc is a full-time physician), things became even more stressful during the pandemic. So, we thought why not try to do something relaxing and rejuvenating for people. Something totally opposite from what we do in emergency medicine.” Dr. Leduc, who began her career as a Navy physician, said starting a business is something she never imagined doing. “I never ever thought of myself as a businessperson,” said Leduc. “But Mandy and I both know medicine, and this is medicine. This is how we think of this business, and we treat it like a medical practice. We are going to do everything as if it were a primary care practice.” But unlike a typical doctor’s office, Veristic Aesthetics, located at 180 South Stephanie Street, Suite 140 Room 1, doesn’t focus on saving lives or treating illnesses. Leduc and Griffin’s mission is about turning back the clock and creating beauty in a way that reflects the roots of the name of which Leduc and Griffin gave their business: “Veritas.”

“It means ‘truth,’ and we want to create a business that’s about bringing out the ‘true’ beauty. We may use Botox and fillers, but the goal is to bring our clients back to how they really look, to begin with,” said Griffin. “Neither of us are very high maintenance, nor are we interested in the frozen, huge lips, overdone kind of look. I don’t think that represents most women of the women here in this area.” Leduc and Griffin, both moms of two children, said their business is not unique to Southern Nevada. The med spa business has been growing here in the last decade. But as healthcare professionals, the two women said they give their clients something many of them haven’t been able to find: a sense of trust. “There are definitely options out there for people to get this kind of work

done. But we had people tell us they were scared to do anything with their face, but they would do it if we were doing it,” said Griffin. “Jessica and I thought it’s not enough that we offer aesthetic medicine. We want it to be a combination of safety and natural results.” Leduc said that sense of trust also extends to what she and Griffin has for each other— as friends, business partners, and medical professionals. “When it comes to Botox and fillers, we also inject each other. It’s a trust thing, and doing this, we know what to expect from a sensory standpoint, and then we can share that with our clients,” said Leduc. “What we do here at Veristic Aesthetics is helping people take care of themselves from an aging and aesthetic standpoint. We can rebuild what people

once look like very subtlety. It’s a way to be happy with what you see in the mirror, no matter your age.” Both Leduc and Griffin said their goal is to eventually run this med spa business full time and hopefully expand into a bigger space to include additional skincare-related services. Their advice to others who may be looking to start their own business: take that leap of faith. “I think a lot of people during this pandemic had been rethinking what they are doing with their lives and what they want to do in the future,” said Griffin. “For us, these past couple of years gave us the courage and push to try. That’s what you have to do sometimes— get started on something even when you are not certain of the outcome and be confident in your skills and know how you can stand out.”

If it weren’t for Swedish-born Chef Christian Sandefeldt’s charming smile, reassuring demeanor, and endearing accent, this 6’3” bearded Herculean fellow would likely inspire fear. There is no mistaking he is an imposing figure, an attribute, that he agrees, served him well in his more than 30 years as a chef in kitchens of restaurants and events from Stockholm to London. Mallouk has written several books, including 5 Mistakes Every Investor Makes and How to Avoid Them, and has cowritten Unshakeable: Your Financial Freedom Playbook and The Path: Accelerating Your Journey to Financial Freedom with Tony Robbins. “People are generally fearful of investment and feel the market is too low or too high at any given time. When there is a correction (a drop of 10% or more), people generally stay on the sidelines or sell their stocks, fearing the market may collapse and stay lower—there have been over 100 corrections, usually about one per year, and they have all ended with a full recovery. Some of these corrections turn into bear markets, a drop of 20% or more, and all have ended with a full recovery. On the other end of the spectrum, many are worried about investing when the market is at an all-time high. This is actually completely normal and happens about once every 19 days—in other words, all the time! We aren’t surprised when a Hershey’s bar, box of cereal or ticket to Disney World costs more, but somehow are shocked when the market hits an all-time high. In many ways, it feels like we are For those with a 401(k), Mallouk says to do everything you can to contribute. “Some 401(k) plans have an employer match, meaning for every dollar you put into the 401(k), the company will match—it usually applies to the first 3%. It’s a guaranteed 100% rate of return, and there is just nothing else you can do that is going to be as good as that. If you have the ability to contribute the max, do that as well, but for sure take advantage of the match.” When faced with the choice to either invest or pay off debts first, Mallouk says to start with focusing on the interest rate. “All debts aren’t created equal—if you have credit card debt where you are paying 10% or more in interest, then paying off the debt before doing anything else other than a 401(k) match is the way to go. If your only debt is a home mortgage at 2-4% or so, then investing over a long period of time is very likely to yield you a far better outcome than making extra debt payments.” When planning an estate, it’s crucial to have a healthcare and financial power of attorney and a will or trust. “A healthcare power of attorney names someone to make healthcare decisions for you in the event you can’t make them for yourself. A financial power of attorney names someone to make financial decisions for you if you can’t for yourself. Lastly a will or a trust both name who will handle things for you in the event of your death, and who will oversee and inherit your assets. A trust tends to make more sense for wealthier individuals as it can bypass the probate court system, which keeps things private, allows for a faster transfer of assets after death, and because it skips the court system, settling the estate is much less expensive.” When looking for a financial advisor, find the right one by asking the right questions. “Most don’t realize that the vast majority of financial advisors don’t have to act in the client’s best interests. A minority of financial advisors are fiduciaries and operate under laws that share similarities with doctors and lawyers, meaning they do have to act in their client’s best interests. First, ask your advisor if they are registered as a broker or are dually registered. If they say yes to either, that means that part or all of the time, they don’t have to act in your

just at the starting line.”

best interests. There are thousands of advisors that will act in your best interest, so take the time to find one. Second, ask your advisor if their parent company, or the ownership of their parent company, own investment vehicles. If the answer is yes, don’t be surprised if some of those investment vehicles find their way into your portfolio. Essentially you may find yourself paying an advisor to then put you in a fund where the company collects another fee. There is no need to accept this conflict. Find a fiduciary that is not dually registered and that does not own their own investment products. At that point, you at least have someone that is incented to act on your behalf all the time. From there, look for education, credentials and experience with people like you.” As for the future, it’s never looked brighter at Creative Planning. “It’s an exciting time—we can do more for our clients today than at any point in our history.
