Celebrating the Women of Hays County

Welcome to our Women’s Issue of Hays City Lifestyle, a celebration of the incredible ladies who are shaping our community with passion, leadership, and heart. From business owners and professionals to neighbors and friends, the women in our area continue to inspire through their dedication and the impact they make every day.

In these pages, we are proud to highlight women who are making a difference right here in our community. You’ll meet Ashley Strickland of Buda Dental, who is helping bring bright, confident smiles to families across the area through her commitment to exceptional dental care and patient relationships. Her work reflects not only professional excellence but also a genuine passion for serving the community she calls home.

Our May cover came to life during an unforgettable evening at a beautiful local winery, where laughter, connection, and genuine moments made the entire experience truly special. Bringing these incredible women together in one space was a powerful reminder of the strength and support within this community. The energy, joy, and authenticity of that night are reflected in every image—we couldn’t have asked for a more meaningful way to capture the spirit of this issue.

You’ll also get to know Martinique Simmons, owner of The Simmons Group Insurance Services, whose life is a thoughtful balance of family, business, and personal strength.

You'll enjoy our feature on Ashley Dalton, a multi-disciplinary artist based in the Texas Hill Country, whose work is featured at Neon Armadillo in Wimberley, TX and even adorns a local wine label.

This issue is about more than just business and art—it’s about the stories behind the women who are contributing to the growth, strength, and spirit of our community. We hope their journeys inspire you as much as they inspire us.

Thank you for being part of the Hays City Lifestyle community and for supporting the remarkable women who help make our area such a vibrant place to live, work, and thrive.

Warm regards,

May 2026

A California native and U.S. Army veteran, Gary Elliott brought his love of wine and craftsmanship to Texas after marrying his wife, Kathy, a proud Texas native. Together, they built Driftwood Estate Winery from the ground up on family land owned for over 75 years, planting the first vines in 1998 and establishing the winery in 2002. CREATING A BEAUTIFUL SMILE

Connecting Wellness and Oral Health

Buda Dental Professionals has been a trusted part of the community for 44 years, and Ashley Strickland has been part of that story since 2007. Fresh out of dental school, pregnant, and raising a one-year-old, she joined the practice and embraced the opportunity to carry on the legacy of its

“I learned it’s okay to say, ‘no.’ You don’t have to do everything. Just choose the things you want to do well.”

founder—her mentor—right on Main Street. Over the years, she’s cared for generations of patients, many of whom have become cherished friends.

Today, with her children grown and in college, Ashley has a bit more space to consider her own personal growth and wellness routines.  She understands firsthand how easy it is for personal wellness to slip down the priority list. “It’s ebbed and flowed over the years,” she says. “There have been seasons where I’ve done really well, and others where I’ve had to get back on track.”

For her, it’s about a schedule and consistency, which now includes working with a personal trainer. But wellness isn’t confined to the gym. Some of her most meaningful routines are simple, like evening walks with her husband. “It gets us moving, and it also gives us time to connect and talk about our day,” she says.

As she explains, Ashley’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. About a decade ago, her health took a significant hit. Juggling leadership roles and volunteering, running a practice, raising children, and saying “yes” to nearly everything, she was trying to do too much.

“My health just crashed,” she recalls. “I was dealing with chronic fatigue and I had to make a choice.”

What followed was a wake-up call and a reset. She scaled back her work schedule, simplified her family’s lifestyle—even moving to a smaller home—and began redefining her priorities. “It was hard, but it was also a really wonderful time in my life,” she says. “I learned it’s okay to say, ‘no.’ You don’t have to do everything. Just choose the things you want to do well.”

“In your 40s, you start thinking differently about longevity,” she adds. “It’s not just about getting through the day anymore—it’s about how you want to

feel and function years from now.” That perspective also informs how she approaches dental care, both personally and professionally. While oral health is often viewed as separate from overall wellness, Ashley knows it’s all connected.

“Many dental issues don’t cause symptoms early on,” she explains. “You can get by in your 20s or even your 30s, but over time, things like gum disease, tooth wear, and decay start to compound.” Preventative care, she emphasizes, is essential— not just for cosmetic reasons, but for preserving quality of life.

“Something as simple as being able to chew comfortably affects your ability to eat healthy foods,” she says. “And we see links between oral health and systemic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes.” That means it’s a great idea to keep up with regular visits to the dentist, as your mouth offers a window into your overall wellness.

And beyond the health benefits, there’s something more personal at stake: confidence. “I’ve seen patients who are so used to hiding their smile that it affects how they interact with others,” she says.

That’s where dentistry becomes truly transformative. “Cosmetic dentistry isn’t just about appearance,” she explains. “It’s about restoring function, balance, and confidence. When someone feels good about their smile, it shows up in every part of their life.”

“You don’t have to do everything, but the things you choose to invest insuch as your health, your relationships, or your confidence - do those things that matter most, and do them well!”

Whether it’s replacing missing teeth with dental implants, or enhancing aesthetics with porcelain veneers, Ashley approaches each case with a thoughtful, individualized perspective. “We want your smile to look natural, healthy, and like you,” she says.

At Buda Dental Professionals, that philosophy is woven into every patient experience. By combining advanced techniques with an understanding of the oral–systemic connection,

Ashley and her team help patients not only improve their smiles, but support their longterm health and wellbeing.

For Ashley, it all comes back to balance - the same lesson she’s learned in her own life. “You don’t have to do everything,” she says. “But the things you choose to invest in - such as your health, your relationships, or your confidence - do those things that matter most, and do them well!”

MARTINIQUE SIMMONS: Practicing Balance

Committed to Embracing Her Unique Multifaceted Identity

Martinique Simmons, Kyle native and owner of The Simmons Group Insurance Services, exudes a lovely fusion of confidence and humbleness, strength and vulnerability. Her genuine warmth and friendliness are contagious…a refreshing trait when it comes to counting on someone to help with insurance, a word that most don’t get too excited about.

On any given morning, Martinique might be collecting eggs from her backyard chickens — coffee in hand, “zoning out” as much as she can (her mind never stops). She could be obsessively mapping out the day’s plan, but she knows each day looks different and that it will serve her well to go with the flow. The non-negotiables tend to present themselves at the right time. As the day progresses, she’s deep in conversation with a client, translating insurance policies into language that actually makes sense…taking her daughter’s forgotten textbook over to school…and carving out time for a weightlifting session — because taking care of her body and mind isn’t optional. “I just do it,” she laughs. “I fit in the things I want and need to fit in. I make the time.”

For Martinique, showing up for her two children, husband, herself, and her clients is a balancing act, but one she practices daily with grace, patience, and determination. There’s no rigid routine, no expectation of perfection — just consistent recalibration and flexibility on top of a commitment to modeling independence and strength for her twelve-year-old daughter.

BUILDING SOMETHING OF HER OWN

As the owner of an independent insurance brokerage, Martinique built her career with intention. She wanted more than a job; she wanted autonomy and freedom. She spent a decade as a captive insurance agent, working hard to essentially build

someone else’s business. “You spend years developing relationships, building this thing, and at the end of it, when you retire, you don’t leave with anything,” she recalls.

In 2022, she launched her company, her husband David her only coworker. Together, they achieve that ever-so-important balance; she is controlled chaos, and he is methodical about tackling one task at a time. Among the things she loves about her work: “You’re building generational wealth. It’s yours,” she says. And while nobody really likes to talk about insurance, there’s power in understanding it. “Educating people on this thing people have to have—why they have it, what

they have, what it does and doesn’t do, so when stuff hits the fan, they’re familiar with it—is important. Ultimately, my work is about putting people first and building relationships.”

REDEFINING DOING IT ALL

With two kids involved in multiple sports, a husband who works alongside her, and a thriving business to run, Martinique stands firm in her belief that it’s important for a woman to define her identity on her own terms. She is not her career. She is not just a mom, or just a wife. “I’m proud of all those things. You never stop being a mom. And work never stays at work. I’m obsessed with my family, and I love my business. But being my own thing is super important to me too,” she says. Her life is a constant juggle, with everything overlapping, and in between she revels in quiet moments alone, reading or enjoying the natural beauty around her home. And she’s committed to taking care of her health.

For her, strength training—three times a week with a trainer—has become more than a workout routine. “Lifting reminds me I can do hard things.” She particularly loves it when her son and daughter join her at the gym and witness their mom doing those hard things and loving it. It’s also an important message for her daughter that it’s a good thing for a girl to have muscle and fortitude…that “strong is cool!”

Just as her personality reflects a beautiful balance, her life is a reminder that you can be ambitious and protect your peace. You can show up for everyone else and take care of yourself.

Martinique’s Local Favorites

When she’s not working or spending time with family, Martinique loves supporting local businesses around Hays County. For a great cup of coffee, she heads to Hays City Hideout, while Hays City Store is her go-to spot for a casual lunch. When it’s time for a date night, she enjoys the atmosphere at Taste on Main. If she’s craving something sweet, Faith, Hope & Cupcakes always hits the spot. For a little self-care, she visits Lush Nails in San Marcos, and she loves shopping at Buff City Soap for everyday essentials. Supporting local is just another way she stays connected to her community.

PAINTING A WOMAN'S VOICE

Conversation with Ashley Dalton - A Multi-Disciplinary Artist

I come from a long line of strong, spirited women on both my mom’s and dad’s sides—women who were (and are) resilient, spicy, and refuse to be quieted. Their stories are filled with courage, grit, and determination— despite the limitations placed on them as women. My mom, my grandmothers, and the women before them, led with both grit and grace—overcoming obstacles with determination while nurturing their families with a deep, steady love. They showed that strength and softness can coexist, building lives rooted in resilience and courage without ever losing

their warmth. They give me the freedom and responsibility to be an artist.  When I paint, I am honoring their strength, their sacrifices, and the fire they carried. That same spirit and spiciness lives on in my daughter—a reflection of the women who came before her—and I am deeply inspired to nurture it in her. Through my work, I hope to show her what it means to be both strong and expressive, grounded yet daring. In every brushstroke, I carry the legacy of the women who shaped me, and I paint not only to remember them, but to inspire the generations after me.”

I am a native Texan and a multi-disciplinary artist based in the Texas Hill Country. I work primarily in painting, with elements of embroidery, drawing inspiration from my ancestry, cultural roots, and the familiar spirit of the American West. As a former interior designer and mother of five, I returned to my lifelong passion for painting after the birth of my fifth child—my only daughter—embracing it as both a calling and a grounding force. My work blends memory and heritage with a sense of playfulness, creating layered compositions that reflect both where I come from and who I am today.

Wellness, Reimagined: HELPING WOMEN FEEL THEIR BEST FROM THE INSIDE OUT

Zoi Well/Noa Sutherland shares a thoughtful approach to restoring balance

in busy lives

An Interview with Noa Sutherland of Zoi Well

1. MANY WOMEN TODAY ARE JUGGLING CAREERS, FAMILY, AND PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITIES. WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON WELLNESS CHALLENGES YOU SEE WOMEN FACING, AND HOW DOES ZOI WELL HELP ADDRESS THEM?

The most common challenge is a general state of exhaustion and/or hormonal dysregulation—not feeling well and not knowing why. We begin by ensuring the basics are in place : a nutritionally sound diet, movement, rhythms of rest. From there, we utilize diagnostic and functional testing to evaluate areas of the body that require attention. This process helps us to identify and address specific issues of concern such as infertility, autoimmune conditions, weight gain, high cholesterol, insulin resistance, and hormonal disorders.

2. WELLNESS CAN MEAN MANY THINGS—PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, AND MENTAL. HOW DOES YOUR APPROACH AT ZOI WELL SUPPORT THE WHOLE WOMAN RATHER THAN JUST ONE ASPECT OF HEALTH?

We believe in a holistic approach where these aspects are interconnected and cannot be separated. Our goal is to first understand a client’s environment, health history, current presentation and concerns, and then to build a comprehensive resource plan for them. This includes daily customized medical herbalism in the form of tinctures, acupuncture, and precise supplementation, alongside personalized diet and lifestyle planning. This integrated strategy is what allows us to support the whole client, whether man or woman.

3. FOR WOMEN WHO FEEL OVERWHELMED OR BURNED OUT, WHAT ARE A FEW SIMPLE WELLNESS HABITS YOU RECOMMEND STARTING WITH?

We recommend starting with foundational habits that have the biggest impact: ensuring adequate hydration, prioritizing protein in meals, getting daily sunlight exposure, focusing on

a nutrient-rich diet, and establishing healthy sleep patterns. These basics often bring clarity to underlying "problems" that are then identifiable, allowing us to follow up with targeted solutions to support positive, lasting change.

4. WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT FOR WOMEN TO PRIORITIZE THEIR OWN HEALTH AND SELFCARE, EVEN WHEN LIFE FEELS BUSY?

No one can prioritize your wellness for you. Women are often the heart of the home, and when self-care and wellness are neglected, the quality of one's energy, relationships, and joy begins to suffer. Anchoring your wellness with the sequenced and customized approach Zoi Well provides allows your body to function at its best, ensuring you can be your best self for yourself, your spouse, and your family.

5. WHAT MAKES ZOI WELL UNIQUE IN HOW YOU SUPPORT WOMEN IN THE AUSTIN AREA?

Our distinct approach is a blend of modern functional science and Traditional Chinese Medicine. We offer an all-inclusive program dedicated to restoring health at a foundational level. We achieve this by committing significant time to each client, working together to find customized solutions that address their individual health needs.

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

“Trust is the only metric that actually compounds.”

Behind the May Cover

A closer look at the vision, styling, and entrepreneurs behind this month’s cover

There’s a specific kind of magic that happens when you pair Texas Hill Country views with the brilliance of women business owners. To celebrate the entrepreneurs who power our community, we gathered at Driftwood Estate Winery for a night defined by fine wine, charcuterie, and even finer connections.

Perched on a scenic bluff at 4001 Elder Hill Road, the winery offered us a frontrow seat to a classic Texas masterpiece. With glasses in hand, we watched the sun dip behind the twisted silhouettes of ancient live oaks, casting a golden glow over the 18 acres of lush estate vineyards stretching toward the horizon.

A LEGACY IN EVERY POUR

Driftwood Estate isn’t just a pretty view; it’s a piece of Hays County history. Established in 1998 by Gary Elliott, it holds the distinction of being the county’s first commercial vineyard. Today, this veteran-owned and family-run gem remains a powerhouse of Texas viticulture, producing 10,000 cases of wine annually. We enjoyed award-winning wines, to name just a few:

• 2019 Alamo Red: Bold, soulful, and deeply Texan

• 2023 Chardonnay: Crisp and elegant— the perfect sunset companion

• 2023 Pinot Grigio: Bright, refreshing, and ideal for lively conversation

What makes Driftwood truly special is a 25-year winemaking philosophy rooted in precision. Whether it’s a single-block varietal or a complex multi-region blend using grapes from the renowned Newsom Vineyards in the Texas High Plains, every bottle tells a story of craftsmanship.

Ladies and partners of Hays City Lifestyle Included in the shoot were: Laura Elliott of Driftwood Estate Winery, Dr. Ashley Strickland of Buda Dental, Erica Bille of Nest Mortgaging, Noa Sutherland of Zoi Well & Meridian, Allison Pflaum of Hays Home Team, Rebecca Acosta-Ojeda of Salon One 12, Jackie Mendes of Perspire Sauna Studio in Kyle and Linda Lopez of 1626 Construction.
