The Style Issue
September 2026 PUBLISHER
Dave Burris | dave.burris@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
Jennifer Waldera | jennifer.waldera@citylifestyle.com
We welcome you to the Style issue! Style is about so much more than appearances. It can be found in the homes we create, the clothes that help us feel confident, the stories that inspire us, and the passions that shape our lives. At its best, style reflects who we are and the way we choose to share that with the world around us. This month's issue celebrates the many ways style comes to life throughout Harford County. Inside, you'll meet a local business owner who is helping homeowners create beautiful outdoor spaces designed for gathering, relaxing, and making memories for years to come. You'll also discover a new wellness destination bringing a fresh approach to fitness, one that focuses on building strength, confidence, and community through purposeful movement. You'll read the story of a beloved Bel Air menswear shop that is helping customers look and feel their best through personalized service and timeless style. It's a reminder that the right fit is about much more than clothing. It's about making people feel comfortable, confident, and seen. This issue also introduces readers to father-and-son authors. With deep roots in Harford County, the pair share a love of storytelling that has led to remarkable careers. From one's collaborations with Stephen King to the younger's debut novel arriving soon, their story is one of family, creativity, and finding inspiration close to home. You'll also meet local professionals helping people express their personal style, and discover new ways to invest in themselves. Plus, we are introducing our monthly spotlight on a non-profit. This issue’s organization is giving back by bringing together recovery and agriculture. While each story is unique, they all share something in common: a commitment to craftsmanship, connection, and helping others feel their very best. Whether your own sense of style is reflected in the place you call home, the clothes you wear, the books on your nightstand, or the way you move through the world, we hope these stories leave you feeling inspired to appreciate the people and businesses that make Harford County such a special place. Thank you for reading Harco City Lifestyle. We hope you enjoy this month's issue. D AV E B U R R I S , P U B L I S H E R @HARCOCITYLIFESTYLE

Foundation of Style Thoughtful masonry helps homeowners create beautiful, functional spaces that never go out of style. Twenty years ago, Ryan Boynton wasn't sure what career path he wanted to pursue. Fresh out of high school, he found work in masonry, discovering not only a trade but a passion for creating spaces that families would enjoy for decades. Now, as owner of Gibraltar Masonry, Boynton has spent two decades transforming properties throughout the region, blending craftsmanship with thoughtful design to create outdoor spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful. "What I love is the creative aspect of it," Boynton said. "Every job is different, every job requires a different detail. I love being able to step foot on a property for the first time and see the change that it's going to experience throughout the duration of the process… seeing that transformation and how much it has changed and how usable it's going to be." That philosophy extends beyond patios and retaining walls. While outdoor living spaces remain one of the company's most requested projects, Boynton encourages homeowners to think about the entire property, especially the front entrance.

"A lot of our competition focuses on the backyard," he said. "The front entry is big. A new sidewalk, a new front porch, or a new structure over a landing or porch area can completely change the appearance of a home." Today's homeowners are also redefining what outdoor living looks like. Fire pits, outdoor kitchens, pergolas, spas, herb gardens, and dedicated spaces for dining, lounging, and cooking continue to grow in popularity as people look to bring the comforts of home outside. "Everyone is trying to take the inside out," Boynton said. Designing those spaces starts with listening. Clients often arrive with inspiration photos and ideas, which Gibraltar's team refines through conversations about style, color palettes, textures, functionality, and budget. Detailed 3D renderings help homeowners visualize how the finished project will look and function before construction begins.

For Boynton, lasting style is rooted in materials that have stood the test of time. "Brick and stone work have been used for thousands of years. They're not going anywhere," he said. "Bluestone is a product we use often." While design trends evolve, larger-format pavers, integrated outdoor lighting, and wellness-focused features continue to shape today's landscapes. Boynton believes the best projects balance timeless materials with practical design, creating spaces that reflect how each family truly lives.

After 20 years in business, Gibraltar Masonry continues to handle everything from paving patios and retaining walls to concrete overlays and custom masonry work, all performed by its in-house team. Licensed, insured, and backed by warranties that exceed many competitors, the company remains committed to the same goal that inspired Boynton from the beginning: asking the right questions, communicating clearly, and creating outdoor spaces where families can gather for years to come.

Two Generations of Storytelling ONE FAMILY, TWO DISTINCT VOICES, AND A LIFELONG PASSION FOR STORYTELLING.
Richard and W.H. Chizmar. Photo courtesy of Richard Chizmar.
Many years ago, before W.H. Chizmar prepared for his first major book release, he was a child wandering through bookstores with his father, Richard Chizmar, imagining what it might be like to see their own stories on the shelves. “It’s a dream come true for both of us,” W.H. Chizmar said of sharing a writing life with his father. “It’s the kind of thing we used to talk about when I was a kid, and we were walking the shelves of Barnes & Noble, looking for the latest ‘Magic Treehouse’.” For Richard Chizmar, storytelling began just as early. He wrote monster tales, war stories, and adventures at seven or eight years old, attempting to sell them to friends before finding his first loyal customer at home. “My mom used to buy them for a nickel or a dime apiece,” he said. “She was my first audience.” Those childhood stories eventually led to a celebrated career as an author and the founder of Cemetery Dance Publications. Richard’s work has also included collaborations with Stephen King, an author Richard Chizmar admired long before they became creative partners. “I was the teenager who walked around Edgewood High School with a Stephen King paperback in his back pocket, sneaking it out and reading it during class when I should have been studying history or calculus or social studies,” he said. Writing with King became a dream realized, but Richard Chizmar said sharing the craft with his son has meant even more. “People always ask me if writing with Stephen King is the pinnacle of my career,” he said. “But nope…writing with my son, watching him forge a solo career all on his own…it’s almost too big, too special to fully wrap my brain around.” That solo career takes a major step forward in August with the release of W.H. Chizmar’s novel, “THEM”. Begun while he was in college in 2020, the book evolved through

several complete rewrites as his style and skills developed. “It could be disheartening, but I loved the story so much that I couldn’t stop,” he said. A love letter to monster and apocalypse stories, “THEM”reflects influences ranging from “War of the Worlds” and “The Mist” to “Godzilla” and “The Road”. Still, the younger Chizmar’s work remains grounded in the county where he grew up. He cited Bynum Run Creek, Eden Mill, the Bush River, Mariner Point, the Bel Air Library, and fishing near Poole’s Island among the places that shaped his imagination. Harford County also runs deeply through Richard Chizmar’s work who frequently transforms familiar places into fictional settings. His forthcoming novel, “Killing the Boogeyman”, unfolds entirely in Bel Air and Edgewood, and he recommends that aspiring writers use local spots to inspire writing. “Use those hometown locations to offer readers a glimpse of a world they may not be familiar with,” he said. “Use them to craft authentic stories that only someone who lives there can create.” The two writers admire different strengths in one another. Richard Chizmar praises his son, saying, “He’s a courageous and confident writer, especially for someone his age. He just dives right in and figures it out as he goes along. He’s fearless.” Meanwhile, W.H. Chizmar admires the grace his father extends to even deeply flawed characters. “He manages to make real people, flaws borne to the world, still lovable,” W.H. Chizmar said. “There’s always grace.”

This summer, a quick stop at Target and a single, brief social media post turned into an experience Katy Napier never could have imagined. Napier, who was born and raised in Salisbury and now lives in Fallston, posted a 6-second TikTok after spotting Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Papatui shampoo and conditioner being promoted in the store despite his famously bald head. “Don’t give up on your dreams. The Rock is selling shampoo and conditioner, and he’s bald.” The lighthearted video quickly exploded online, attracting millions of views across TikTok and Instagram. Napier’s following grew from about 7,000 to nearly 32,000 on TikTok and from 2,400 to 24,000 on Instagram. Then Johnson saw it.
He responded with a duet of her video, teasing that a surprise was on the way. Just two days later, representatives from Papatui arrived at Napier’s home with an assortment of products, including shampoo, conditioner, body wash, bar soap, deodorant, and tattoo care items. But the biggest surprise came next. Johnson invited Napier and her family to Los Angeles for the July premiere of the live-action Moana. “We all took the opportunity to go shopping for brand new outfits,” Napier said. She and her husband, along with their 10-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter, enjoyed the once-in-a-lifetime experience together. Napier, who sells LuLaRoe clothing online and from her in-home boutique in Fallston, said the attention has been surreal. “The response has been overwhelming.”

Like many people, Denyele Fiacco first discovered PVOLVE through Jennifer Aniston. After years of experimenting with a variety of workouts, Fiacco was drawn to the functional fitness method that the actress ambassadors and often shares online. Fiacco looked for a nearby studio but came up empty. Rather than settling for the closest location hours away, she decided Bel Air deserved one of its own. “I really wanted to be a member,” Fiacco said. “I saw it on Jennifer Aniston’s page. I’d tried all of the workouts known to man over the years, and I thought, ‘That looks like something I would enjoy.’” Harford County’s first PVOLVE studio promises to offer a workout focused on functional movement, helping people build strength, improve mobility, and move more confidently through everyday life. The studio’s location in the heart of downtown was intentional. Fiacco envisioned members taking a class before strolling to a nearby coffee shop, grabbing lunch, or browsing local boutiques, creating an experience that extends beyond the workout itself. For Fiacco, opening the studio also marked the beginning of a new chapter. After spending 30 years as an executive with a market research firm and preparing for life as the youngest of her children left for college, she found herself asking what truly inspired her. PVOLVE provided the answer. As plans for the studio came together, life took an unexpected turn. Fiacco was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer, an experience that gave her vision an even greater purpose. “It’s centered around women’s health,” Fiacco said. “It’s created an awareness for me.” Her diagnosis inspired plans to place an ultrasound machine in the studio to help educate women about a disease that is often diagnosed too late. The mission
has resonated throughout the community, including with the developer of the Bond Street building housing the studio, whose mother passed away from undetected ovarian cancer. He has committed to purchasing the ultrasound machine in her honor. Fiacco also knew she needed someone she trusted to help bring the vision to life. She invited her niece by marriage, Gretchen Savick, whose degree is in entrepreneurship, to become studio manager. “I didn’t know much about it, but I trusted in the vision,” Savick said. “It’s been so cool to see people signing up and coming to a class -- seeing it moving is fun.” That vision began resonating early. Preview classes filled quickly, founder memberships were nearly sold out by mid-summer, and wellness events have drawn enthusiastic crowds before construction was even complete. “I’ve been incredibly blessed with the support all around,” Fiacco said. The primary hope that Fiacco and Savick have is that every member feels welcomed from the moment they arrive. “When you walk in, you instantly feel relaxed. Your equipment is set up for you, we’re helping with form, building that positivity,” Fiacco said. “It’s a full concierge experience.” Savick believes those thoughtful touches help create something larger than a fitness studio. “It’s a community,” she said. Designed for men and women of all ages and fitness levels, PVOLVE emphasizes movement that supports everyday life, whether someone is recovering from an injury, returning to exercise after having children, building strength while using GLP-1 medications, or simply looking to feel better. “It’s truly a workout for everyone,” Fiacco said. “We meet you at every phase in your life.”

ENERGY AS STYLE:
WHAT PEOPLE FEEL BEFORE THEY SEE YOU EXPERT ADVICE FOR MINDFUL MOMENTS FROM THE SOUL LIFT'S EMILY ADOLPH
Fashion magazines, photography, and beautiful design shaped much of my early life. After earning a degree in Fashion Merchandising and later working in photography, I eventually turned to holistic wellness, where I discovered that the most important thing you wear isn’t found in your closet at all, it’s in your energy. Style is often associated with clothing, accessories, and appearance, but presence communicates something even more powerful. Long before someone notices your outfit or hears your words, they experience the energy you bring into the room. Some are more attuned to this awareness than others. The way you feel within yourself shapes the way you experience the world around you. When your nervous system is overwhelmed, life can feel rushed and disconnected, making it easy to move about your day without taking a moment to check in with yourself. Creating space to slow down, breathe, move your body, spend time in nature, meditate, or simply sit in stillness allows you to
reconnect with yourself. You become more present, grounded, and intentional in the way you move through life. One simple mindfulness practice takes less than a minute. Before entering a meeting, gathering, or conversation, pause and take three slow breaths. Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale gently through your mouth. Then ask yourself: "How do I want to show up today?" This simple question shifts your focus from doing to being, from appearance to presence. Rather than focusing on how you look, consider the energy you want to bring into the moment instead. Choosing how you want to feel -- grounded, open, and kind -- helps you respond with intention instead of reacting from habit. Style is more than what you wear. It's reflected in the energy you bring into every space, the way you care for yourself, and the way you connect with others. The most timeless style of all is being fully present in your own life.

LEGACY ARTICLE BY JENNIFER WALDERA PHOTOGRAPHY BY DESIREE ORTMAN
and
STYLE
A Bel Air menswear store rooted in family and dedicated to timeless style.
WHEN DID THE STORE OPEN?
Beth Pocalyko: We opened John’s Men’s Clothing in 2019. My mom and I were doing what we always love to do, shopping locally in downtown Bel Air. We stopped for lunch at Savona, and while we were sitting there, we realized we had checked off everyone on our shopping list except for the men. We looked at each other and said, “There really should be a men’s store in Bel Air that offers business casual clothing and styles for everyday life.” We started dreaming a little and asking ourselves what we would even call it. My mom immediately said, “John’s,” after my brother, her son, who had passed away a few years earlier. The moment she said it, I knew we had to do it. My brother John was always well-dressed whether he was going to work [or] having dinner with friends and family. Our motto, “Work Hard. Play Hard. Dress Easy.” perfectly reflects who he was. From that lunch conversation on Main Street, the idea quickly became a reality. We carefully selected brands we believed in and knew would resonate with our community. We found a great spot in between Savona and Old Line Barbers, and just a few months later, we opened John’s Men’s Clothing. One of the most meaningful parts of the store is our logo. It’s actually John’s signature, which allows his presence and legacy to be part of the business every single day.
WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES OF BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL INDEPENDENT MENSWEAR BUSINESS?
Maureen Bruneau: I would say our biggest challenges were probably two things. The first was when we initially opened. We had found all of these great brands that we believed in, but it took time to really understand what our customers wanted. We had to learn what styles they liked, how they preferred things to fit, and which brands worked best for the men in our community. We went through several brands and made adjustments along the way to curate the collection we have today. And we are still working and growing with our collection. We love hearing from our guys on what new brands they would want in the store. The second challenge was COVID. Like many small businesses, we were forced to close our doors for a period of time. Thankfully, we had already invested in our website and online store, but it pushed us to become much more active on social media. What started as a necessity ended up becoming one of our greatest strengths. During that time, we built an online community that is still growing and thriving today. I’m really proud of the connections we’ve created through Instagram and our website. It allows us to stay connected with our customers even when they’re not CONTINUED >

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BIGGEST SHIFTS IN MEN’S FASHION THAT YOU’VE SEEN, AND WHAT STYLES ARE RESONATING MOST WITH CUSTOMERS TODAY?
BP: One thing we have learned over the years is that men’s fashion moves at a slower pace than women’s fashion. Trends definitely change, but they’re usually more gradual. Right now, we’re starting to see some exciting shifts. Traditionally, men tend to gravitate toward blues and neutrals, and honestly, we did too when we first started buying. But we’re seeing customers become much more open to color, patterns, and prints, so we’re bringing more of those into the store. We’re also seeing some influence from ‘90s fashion making a comeback. Now, styles are becoming a little looser and more casual.
IN AN ERA OF ONLINE SHOPPING AND FAST FASHION, WHY DO YOU BELIEVE PERSONALIZED SERVICE AND PROFESSIONAL FITTING STILL MATTER?
BP: I actually think personal service is more important than ever. At John’s, we don’t focus on fast fashion. We focus on quality, timeless pieces that our customers can wear for years. We believe in classic styles, quality fabrics, and brands that stand the test of time. When you’re investing in clothing like that, personal service becomes a big part of the experience. There is value in being able to come into a store, try things on, and get honest feedback about what fits your body and your lifestyle. Our customers really value that personal connection. They appreciate being recognized when they walk through the door and knowing that we’re helping them find pieces that truly work for them. Some of my favorite moments are seeing the generations shop together. We have dads bringing in their sons for their first job interview, graduation, or vacation. Or

daughters and mothers shopping for their husbands together. Those are meaningful milestones, and we’re honored to be a small part of them. At the end of the day, our goal is simple: help people feel confident in clothing that fits them well and lasts. That’s something that never goes out of style, no matter how much shopping changes.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF HELPING CUSTOMERS FIND CLOTHING FOR IMPORTANT MOMENTS IN THEIR LIVES, FROM FIRST JOBS AND WEDDINGS TO RETIREMENTS AND SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS?
MB: Honestly, that’s probably our favorite part of what we do. We’re fortunate to be a small part of so many meaningful moments in our customers’ lives. Whether it’s a son’s wedding, a graduation, a dream vacation, a new job, or another milestone, we’re often one of the first stops in the planning process. The fact that someone chooses John’s when they’re preparing for an important event means so much to us. What makes it even more special is that we genuinely remember those moments. We’ll ask customers, “How was the wedding?” or “How was the family photo session ?” and “Did you get the job?” Because we truly care. The relationships we build with our customers go far beyond a transaction. We get to celebrate life’s big moments alongside them, and that’s something we never take for granted. Growing New Beginnings ONE FAMILY'S EXPERIENCE INSPIRED A RECOVERY MODEL ROOTED IN PURPOSE AND HOPE. ARTICLE BY JENNIFER WALDERA PHOTOGRAPHY BY KERRY PARADIS PHOTOGRAPHY

Founded in 2015, Char Hope Foundation grew from one family’s deeply personal experience into a place where men and women battling addiction can rediscover purpose, responsibility, and hope. For founders Derek Hopkins and his wife, the idea began after welcoming a young man into their home one Christmas. While they tried to help him rebuild his life, they noticed something unexpected. “The one thing that consistently gave him purpose, hope, and stability was caring for the cattle and livestock on our farm,” Derek Hopkins said. “Through daily responsibilities with the animals, he found something that traditional recovery methods hadn’t

provided: a sense of worth, routine, and connection to something bigger than himself.” That realization inspired a recovery model centered on livestock, farm work, life skills, and compassionate support. Hopkins said the daily routine does more than keep residents busy. It helps them see themselves differently. “The farm doesn’t just teach people how to stay sober. It helps them discover why their life is worth rebuilding,” Hopkins said. That transformation is perhaps best reflected in one resident’s journey. She entered the program facing more than 10 years in prison, initially viewing it as a way to satisfy the court. As she embraced the work, she grew into a leader, eventually becoming House Manager. At sentencing, the judge recognized her progress and allowed her to remain at the farm instead of serving a lengthy prison sentence. Today, she leads the very program that helped change her life. For Hopkins, stories like hers reinforce the foundation’s mission. “The men and women we serve are not ‘lost causes’ or ‘problems to be hidden.’ They are sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, and neighbors who deserve a real chance to heal.” Char Hope offers other opportunities, as well, including counseling, workshops, network building, and post-program support, and they continue to work to build and improve the program they offer. “We’re most proud that Char Hope remains rooted in its original mission: using the farm, livestock, hard work, and genuine care to help people rediscover their worth and purpose. Every year we refine the program, but the heart stays the same -- offering hope and healing to those who are ready to do the work.” Looking ahead, Char Hope plans to expand its reach while remaining true to its founding purpose. “[An] investment in Char Hope is an investment in safer neighborhoods, stronger families, and lives restored,” Hopkins said. “Together, we can create a future where more people in our county find lasting hope and recovery.”

Your Curated Home The Home Style Forecast: What’s Carrying Into 2027 As we look toward 2027, the most compelling interiors are not defined by trends alone. Homes are becoming warmer and more expressive. What began taking shape in 2026 -- softer palettes, statement lighting, and more personal styling -- now carries into 2027. The next chapter of design is less about reinvention and more about creating rooms that feel deeply lived-in and reflective of the people who call them home.
PATTERN, TEXTURE & THE FIFTH WALL

The clean, flat rooms of the past are giving way to softer layers. Patterned wallpaper, striped textiles, limewash walls, plaster finishes, and handmade tile are carrying forward because they add soul without overwhelming a room. Ceilings are becoming part of the design story, too. Beams, tongue-and-groove, wallpapered ceilings, and subtle paint colors make a room feel custom from every angle.
KITCHENS & BATHS WITH STAYING POWER
The most-used rooms are leaning warmer and more architectural. Inset cabinetry, warm whites, statement stone, sculptural range hoods, and layered lighting are moving from 2026 into lasting design language for 2027. Bathrooms are following the same path. Spa-like wet rooms, textured tile, wall-mounted faucets, and better lighting are helping these spaces feel less utilitarian and more restorative.

Furniture is becoming softer, richer, and more personal. Curved silhouettes, warm walnut, honey wood, performance fabrics, and statement lighting are replacing rooms that feel too matched or overly staged. The finishing layer matters most: vintage pieces, collected accessories, layered rugs, and meaningful art. These are the details that make a house feel lived-in, loved, and unmistakably yours.
LOVE YOUR HOME AGAIN!
A beautiful home, like great style, is never about following every trend. It is about choosing what feels timeless, personal, and unmistakably you. The most impactful homes for 2027 feel warm and curated with intentional layers and patterns, to create a deep connection to the lives being lived inside them.
