Welcome to the Kids and Pets Issue…

Hey Neighbors,

August has always been one of my favorite issues because it celebrates two of life’s greatest gifts: the children who remind us to slow down and see the world with wonder, and the pets who love us unconditionally every single day.

This month is especially meaningful as we celebrate our 48th issue and four years of Gulf Coast City Lifestyle. What began as a dream has become a publication welcomed into thousands of homes each month, and that’s only possible because of you. Thank you to our incredible island community for reading, supporting us, and sharing your stories. We are truly grateful.

Inside this anniversary issue, you’ll meet some unforgettable people and personalities. We spend time with Paige Moore and her adorable mini-me, Nanno, proving that some of life’s greatest adventures happen close to home.

We also step inside Big Beach Tumbling + Cheer, where young athletes are building far more than strength and skill. They’re gaining confidence, discipline, resilience, and the belief that progress happens one step at a time.

Then, we visit Willie Nelson McLarty. Not the legendary singer, but a lovable four-legged local who just might become your new favorite neighbor. Willie reminds us that life is simply better with love, loyalty, and plenty of tail wags.

We also caught up with The Goo Goo Dolls ahead of their August 21 performance at The Wharf Amphitheater to discuss this year’s tour, the renewed success of their iconic hit Iris, and memories of the 1990s.

The story closest to my heart belongs to one of my pink sisters, Kelsey Neel Diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer at just 29, she was told becoming a mother would not be possible after chemo. Through extraordinary strength, unwavering faith, and remarkable perseverance, Kelsey not only survived cancer; she became the mother she always dreamed of being.

In this special anniversary issue, we’re honored to introduce you to her miracle baby, Renni

As a breast cancer survivor myself, there are few moments more meaningful than watching someone you love overcome impossible odds. I’m endlessly grateful Kelsey and I are both here, making memories and watching little Renni grow. She reminds us that hope is powerful, miracles happen, and some of life’s greatest blessings arrive when we need them most.

Thank you for inviting us into your homes, your businesses, and your hearts. Here’s to the next chapter and many more stories worth telling together.

Live local. Love local. Spend local.

Until next month…

AGAINST All Odds

KELSEY NEEL’S JOURNEY FROM CANCER SURVIVOR TO MIRACLE MOTHERHOOD

ARTICLE BY LILLIAN NORRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JD SWIGER- SWIGER STUDIO

Kelsey Neel had no idea, when she began the fight of her life, that just two years later she would be rocking a baby fast to sleep. The last time we shared Kelsey’s story, she was facing breast cancer with courage, uncertainty, and more strength than anyone should ever have to find inside themselves. Her days were filled with appointments, surgeries, treatments, hard conversations, and decisions that no young woman ever imagines making. Now, against all odds, her days look very different. They are filled with baby giggles, swim time, bottles, nap schedules, and the kind of love that makes every painful chapter feel like it somehow led her here.

Today, Kelsey is not only a breast cancer survivor. She is a brand new mom, and she is rocking it. Her daughter, Renni Beaman, is 10 months old and, to Kelsey, every bit the miracle she prayed for. “Renni is definitely my miracle baby,” Kelsey says. “She is the biggest blessing to me.” Before chemotherapy, Kelsey was told that if she ever wanted the chance to have children, she needed to act quickly. She went through a round of IVF before treatment, believing it may be her only opportunity to preserve the possibility of motherhood. “I was told that if I ever wanted to have children, I needed to spend the money to save my eggs because the treatment for cancer would wreck my body and make me infertile,” Kelsey says. “That was a lie.”

What Kelsey wants other women to understand now is the importance of asking questions, researching, and advocating for themselves. Her experience taught her that fear can drive major decisions, especially when those decisions are being made in the middle of a medical crisis. Looking back, she says she wishes she had done more of her own research before moving forward. In the end, the story she was told was impossible became not only possible, but beautifully real. Just months after completing chemotherapy, Kelsey found out she was pregnant. For a woman who had always wanted to be a mother, the news felt almost too good to be true. When Kelsey met Brandon Beaman, a father of four, she felt like God had already placed the family she had always dreamed of right in front of her.

“Renni is definitely my miracle baby, the biggest blessing to me.”

a way nothing else could. “Out of all of the struggle I’d gone through and surgeries and pain I’d endured, motherhood has made this all so worth it,” she says. “Brandon is the greatest dad. He was born to be a dad, and together we make a great team.” Now 10 months postpartum, Kelsey says her body feels back to its best. After walking through cancer treatment, pregnancy, birth, and recovery, she has a new appreciation for what her body has carried her through. It has endured. It has healed. It has surprised her. And, most importantly, it gave her Renni.

— Kelsey Neel

“I thought, this is wonderful, that God gave me the family I’ve always wanted,” she says. “And then before we knew it, just a few short weeks later, I found out I was expecting Renni. I just feel like God really smiled on me and has given me the biggest blessing.”

Motherhood, for Kelsey, has brought healing in

Kelsey is still teaching toddler swim lessons. These days, Renni is never too far from the water herself. As Kelsey’s little sidekick, she gets plenty of swim time and plenty of front-row seats to watching her mom do what she loves. There is something especially full-circle about it all. Kelsey’s story is not just one of survival. It is one of restoration. It is a reminder that life can still hold surprises after devastation, that joy can return after fear, and that sometimes the very thing we are told is impossible becomes the miracle we get to hold in our arms. For Kelsey, that miracle’s name is Renni.

MINI-ME

ADVENTURES

For Paige and Nanno, adventure begins close to home.

For Paige Moore and her daughter, Nanno, the best adventures do not have to be expensive. In fact, some of their favorite memories have come from discovering the no-cost things to do right here in their own community.

Paige and Nanno are, as Paige puts it, “two peas in a pod.” Whether they are heading to the library, walking through a park, or finding something new to explore, the two have built a sweet rhythm around getting out, learning together, and making ordinary days feel special.

Paige was a stay-at-home mom for the first two years of her daughter’s life, and during that season, she quickly realized how necessary it was to get out of the house. What started as a way to break up the day soon became something much more meaningful. Exploring became a way for Paige and Nanno to connect, learn, and experience the community around them.

Some of their favorite local spots include the Orange Beach Library, Barbers Marina with Bama Stonehenge and the dinosaurs, Gulf State Park, Graham Creek Nature Preserve, and the Railroad Museum in Foley. Each place offers something a little different, whether it is books, nature, imagination, history, or simply room to run and play.

OB Waterfront Park

For Paige, motherhood has always been something she deeply wanted, and now she is soaking up the experience. She says her favorite part of being a mom is just that, the experience of it. Raising Nanno, watching her grow, and sharing these little adventures together feels right up her alley.

And Nanno is having the time of her life. More than anything, Paige wants to teach her daughter that exploring is a good thing. She wants Nanno to grow up curious, confident, and connected to the place she calls home. To Paige, getting to know your community matters. It shows children that adventure is not always far away. Sometimes, it is just down the road.

Their days are a reminder that families do not have to spend a lot to make lasting memories. With a little curiosity and a willingness to try something new, any day can become an adventure.

As Paige would say, explore and create your own experience.

Elevate YOUR PB & J

ARTICLE BY KRISTY BELLEY PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

TRANSFORM YOUR HUMBLE PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY SANDWICH FROM LUNCH BOX BASIC TO GOURMET GREATNESS

Ready to give this childhood classic the upgrade it deserves? Whether you’re packing your kid’s lunch or treating yourself to something special, these elevated PB&J creations will make anyone excited for lunchtime.

THE ART OF THE UPSCALE

The secret to an elevated PB&J isn’t complicated—it’s all about premium ingredients and creative combinations. Swap that white bread for artisanal sourdough, brioche, or even croissants. Trade processed jelly for fresh fruit compotes, gourmet preserves, or actual fresh berries that burst with flavor.

Quality nut butters make all the difference. Think creamy almond butter, rich cashew spread, or that perfectly salted natural peanut butter from the farmer’s market. These simple swaps instantly elevate your sandwich from ordinary to extraordinary.

Bread Options

• Artisanal sourdough

• Brioche

• Croissants

• Multigrain bread

• Cinnamon raisin bread

• Hawaiian sweet bread

• Whole wheat bread

• Thick-cut bread (for open-face)

Nut & Seed Butters

• Natural peanut butter

• Almond butter

• Dark chocolate almond butter

• Cashew butter

• Coconut butter

• Nutella

Fresh Fruits

• Strawberries

• Fresh blueberries

• Fresh raspberries

• Fresh peaches

• Kiwi

• Mixed berries

• Bananas

• Pears

Preserves & Sweet Spreads

• Honey

• Fig jam

• Mango preserves

• Raspberry preserves

• Grape jelly

• Marshmallow cream

Toppings & Add-ins

• Fresh mint leaves

• Granola

• Toasted coconut flakes

• Cream cheese

• Everything bagel seasoning

• Dark Chocolate Syrup

COMBOS TO Try:

CREATIVE COMBINATIONS THAT HIT DIFFERENT

The Sophisticated Sweet: Nutella, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey on brioche bread

The Panini Perfection: Peanut butter, fresh blueberries, and marshmallow cream pressed between sourdough slices

The Beautiful Mess: Your favorite nut butter topped with sliced fresh peaches, kiwi, or berries, then drizzled with golden honey or sprinkled with toasted coconut on thickcut bread

The Grown-Up Classic: Almond butter, fig jam, and thinly sliced pears on multigrain bread

The Breakfast Crossover: Cashew butter, sliced bananas, and a sprinkle of granola on cinnamon raisin bread

The Tropical Twist: Coconut butter, mango preserves, and toasted coconut flakes on Hawaiian sweet bread

The Chocolate Dream: Dark chocolate almond butter, raspberry preserves, and fresh mint leaves on whole wheat

The Savory Surprise: Natural peanut butter, grape jelly, and a thin layer of cream cheese with everything bagel seasoning

PRO TIPS FOR LUNCHBOX SUCCESS

Toast your bread lightly for extra texture, even if you’re making it ahead. Create a barrier with your spread to prevent soggy sandwiches—apply nut butter to both sides, then add your sweet elements in the middle. Pack fresh elements separately and assemble just before eating when possible. Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, wrap in parchment paper tied with twine, or pack in a bento box with complementary sides like apple slices, fancy crackers, or dark chocolate squares.

THE BOTTOM LINE

An elevated PB&J proves that sometimes the best meals come from taking something familiar and making it special. These upgraded versions will have everyone asking for the recipe—and maybe even offering to trade lunches.

WILLIE NELSON’S BEST LIFE

MEET THE GOLDENDOODLE WITH CHARM, QUIRKS, AND SERIOUS PERSONALITY

We all know how much our pets mean to us. The give us comfort, joy, peace, and well... sometimes a good laugh. Que our new friend Willie. We just know  you’re going to love him too.

Willie Nelson is not just any dog. He is a dog with a big personality, a loyal heart, and a daily routine that proves he is absolutely living his best life.

For his owner, Melissa McLarty, Willie is simply the bee’s knees. He is funny, outgoing, and full of charm, with a personality that makes him impossible not to love. From morning coffee with his mom to ball time in the yard, Willie brings joy wherever he goes.

Willie comes by his memorable name honestly. His parents, Johnny and June Cash, were two Goldendoodles in love, and Willie is the sweet product of that pairing. Now seven years old, he seems to carry that loveable spirit into everything he does.

Although Willie lives on the water, do not let that fool you. He may enjoy a good boat ride, but he is no fearless water dog. Melissa says Willie is terrified of the swimming pool and the bay, especially when it comes to water he cannot see through. For all his confidence and charm, Willie has a scaredy-cat side too.

What Willie does love is routine. He loves his owners, people who throw the ball, swinging, and spending time outdoors. But perhaps his favorite activity of all is taking the elevator down to the yard. Not just once or twice, either. Willie enjoys this special trip about seven times a day, and he even shows Melissa exactly where she should sit.

His favorite toys are his Chew Kong Balls, and Melissa says she orders around 16 of them every month. Willie loves to hide them throughout the yard, burying his treasures like only he knows the perfect spot. For Willie, a good day includes exercise, fresh air, and a little strategic toy hiding.

Melissa has had Willie since he was just eight weeks old. Early on, she and her husband sent him to K-9 Academy Training in Nashville, Tennessee, where he completed behavior training. Melissa says those lessons stuck. Even years later, Willie still carries those skills into his daily behavior, which is one of the reasons he is such a good boy.

Of course, Willie has a mischievous streak too. His favorite human treat to steal is butter, and Melissa says his butter obsession has definitely gotten him more than just attention a time or two.

Willie also holds a special title as the very first customer of local favorite Rover Runner. With his love for movement and adventure, it is no surprise that Willie enjoys getting in his exercise.

From boat rides and ball chasing to elevator trips and buried treasures, Willie Nelson has built a life full of joy, routine, and personality. He is funny, affectionate, a little dramatic, and completely adored.

And according to Melissa, that is exactly what makes Willie one of a kind.

Still Singing Along

The Goo Goo Dolls bring nostalgia, connection, and timeless songs to Orange Beach

The Goo Goo Dolls are back on the Gulf Coast this month, bringing decades of familiar songs, road-tested heart, and big singalong energy to The Wharf in Orange Beach on August 21st.

Catching up with the band now feels a little like catching up with an old friend. Their music has been part of so many life chapters that even a few opening chords can send people straight back to a first car, a first heartbreak, a graduation, a road trip, or one of those ordinary days that became memorable because the right song was playing.

That has always been the magic of the Goo Goo Dolls. Their songs are not just heard; they are remembered. From the vulnerability of “Iris” to the lift of “Slide” and the ache of “Name,” the band has built a catalog around feelings people recognize immediately. Love, longing, growing up, letting go, starting over — their music

has a way of saying the thing many people did not know how to say at the time.

Lately, the band has also found a fresh wave of attention through the nostalgic question, “What were you like back in the ’90s?” For longtime fans, it is a playful invitation to pull out the memories: the hair, the jeans, the burned CDs, the mixtapes, the late-night drives. For newer listeners, it is a reminder that great songs do not stay locked in one decade.

That is why seeing the Goo Goo Dolls live still feels special. It is not only about hearing the hits. It is about standing in a crowd of people who all arrived with their own memories attached to the same melodies.

This August, Orange Beach gets its turn to sing along. And if history is any indication, The Wharf will be full of people remembering exactly where they were when these songs first found them.

“Their songs are not just heard; they are remembered by everyone.”

Homemade Dog Food

Recipe from Amy Tinnin - A Cup Full of Sass

ARTICLE

My two pugs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why I started making their food at home, and it’s been one of the most popular posts on my blog. You may be surprised just how easy this recipe is. I add all the ingredients to my slow-cooker to cook, and my dogs love it. If you decide to try this recipe for your pet, please consult your veterinarian. Every dog has different needs based on age, weight, and any health issues. You can even share this recipe with your vet to see if any changes are needed. The ingredients are flexible and can be easily swapped to substitute the turkey for chicken or beef, and even try different dog-safe vegetables. Making dog food at home isn’t hard—it just takes a little planning, and my dogs love it.

Slow Cooker Homemade Dog Food

Ingredients:

• 3 lbs ground turkey (85% lean)

• 1¼ cups frozen sweet potatoes

• 1½ cups frozen peas and carrots

• 1 cup frozen spinach

• 1½ cups uncooked brown or white rice

• 4 cups water

Directions:

1. Add all ingredients to a slow cooker.

2. Break up the ground turkey and mix all the ingredients.

3. Cover and cook on High for 3–4 hours or Low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally.

Note: My dog food was ready in 3½ hours on High. Let cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze for later use.

TREY & KATIE KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it.

Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week.

Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.”

Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered.

After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.”

The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.

Watch or listen to the full conversation wherever you get your podcasts.
