Tropic Falls Opens at OWA
OWA's indoor water park Tropic Falls is now open. “When we were living in the Virgin Islands five years ago, we went paddleboarding. During the excursion, we both lost our sunglasses in the water, namely, Maho Bay. When we went to get them replaced, we realized it would have cost $500. Sunglasses should not cost $500 to replace, so we set out to change things.”

Maho Shades is escaping the ordinary, one pair of glasses at a Whentime. Kris and Alex Anderson moved to the Virgin Islands, the last thing they expected to move back home with was a business idea. However, for the young couple, finding a new business venture was a complete accident.

Maho Shades are comfortable, stylish, and trendy. In addition to sunglasses, the storefront also features clothing, accessories, and gifts. “We went everywhere including Asia, Italy, and back to the Virgin Islands to find the best manufacturers we could get to make the best sunglasses. We knew some thing was missing in the market, and we were determined to fill the gap.” However, in 2015 and 2016, the Zika virus hit the Caribbean, and the Andersons moved back to Gulf Shores. After moving back to the Gulf Coast, Maho Shades’ brand was established. The sunglasses were top quality, all polarized, came with a lifetime warranty, and were only $40 to replace if lost or damaged. The sunglasses were also com fortable for long days on the water with an added stylish twist.
Alex emphasizes that, “during our time in the airstream, people related to us because we were local and knew the local way of liv ing. Since 2020 was so beneficial for us, we used that as an opportunity to expand. We knew we wanted another retail space, and since Kris is an attorney for the Wharf, it was a no-brainer. The Wharf had heavy foot traffic, hosted events, and held several concerts, so we knew we would get a lot of business.”
Over the next year, the Andersons set out to see the world, but with a different agenda.
Currently, Alex's designs are in over 150 retail stores across the southern U.S. and the Virgin Islands, and the brand has no plans of slowing down anytime soon.

The next step was putting the shades into retail stores nearby, which was suc cessful for a few years. However, 2020 had different plans. After losing out on normal accounts due to retailers shutting doors during the pandemic, Flora-Bama Yacht Club had a solution. “We decided to put an airstream at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club and are so thankful we did. People were coming off the boat with lost sunglasses and were coming to us. For people who had sunglasses already, we simply made them put on a pair of ours. It was wonderful. People were buying our glasses over larger retail brands. It really kept our brand.”

Since Alex is an interior designer, having a pair of stylish yet classic sunglasses was important. “We use only Italian materials for each pair we make. In addition, the sunglasses each have a tie to a location worldwide–we name pairs after locations we have traveled. We want people to feel good putting on our sunglasses. I would describe Maho’s sunglasses as a modern touch on an active lifestyle. When you look good, you feel good.”

Carol McCracken, owner of Orange Beach Weddings, walks into a room and the room smiles back at her. I mean, what more do you expect from a wedding planner who loves love? McCracken, who also has a Christian radio show based out of Wilmington, North Carolina discuss ing real life joys and authored a top rated wisdom and devotions book sold on Amazon, moved nine times growing up. “Orange Beach for me was the only solid loca tion I had in my life. We would come to the area fre quently, and when I grew older I felt called here.”

McCracken originally got her start in the insurance world since jobs at the time were few and far between, but one thing kept her going.
“I joined Orange Beach United Methodist Church, and soon after found out some of the ladies in the church were sell ing their wedding business. In 2017, I bought Orange Beach Weddings and haven’t looked back since. I wanted creativity, and oftentimes craved it. It was the perfect fit. However, I had only done so many weddings when 2020 hit us all, and it was hard. Since I am a firm believer in my faith, I knew I was able to show grace to brides in their time of need.” McCracken says the best part of her job overall is letting each bride shine and finding out what makes them up. “I have done 100s of weddings, and all was different than the last. For my services, I do not offer packages. I want each wedding to be reflective of each couple, and I want the bride to feel special. It’s her day, and I am just thankful I get to share that special time in her life with her.” McCracken also says she feels like she can show the love of Christ in her work regardless of what happens. “When it is a rainy season wedding I have 90 page timelines laid out describ ing each plan we have if something could go wrong. The bride envisions a special day, so I intend to keep it special no matter what the outcome is.”
As far as planning styles go, “we are very blessed that our island is so conducive for people having a lovely day. Let’s face it, life is simply better here. Everyone is hospitable to the point where when you think it can not get any better, it does. Orange Beach has given me a treasure, and I am forever thankful.”

Casey and Christina Buckner moved from the hustle and bustle of Birmingham to the Gulf Coast in the spring of 2020 with both of their families in tow. While the Gulf Coast had beaches, gorgeous sunsets, and a relaxed way of living, the coast did not have as many transportation opportunities as the two would have liked.
The couple, who also own Flip Flop Vacations, immediately took action.
"Since we were in the real estate business already, it was not very hard for us to start up another company. When people would come down here to view a place or were family and friends staying here visiting us, finding a repu table Uber of Lyft--especially with a large crew in tow--proved very difficult for everyone. These people did not just want transportation, they needed it."
"Basically, we show up to a hotel, condo, or place of residency and pick up the passengers. Then, they get our shuttle services for the entire day or night to do whatever they please."
"People can book our services for their group for four to six hours, but often book us longer than that. We have taken people to a restaurant, then shopping, then cabana bar to grab a drink, and then back to another restaurant for dinner. We can work with the group booking to figure out what is best for them."
However, the shuttle doesn't stop there. In the summer of 2022, The Original Bushwacker Tour commenced. The tour, which takes groups of people all over Orange Beach in search of the "perfect" bushwhacker, lasts anywhere from four to six hours complete with a music filled party bus.
The company also allows private booking times.

A short time later in 2022, the Buckner's, joined by Bill Buckner, Chad Hampton, and Cayce Wilkinson, founded the Surfside Shuttle.

Currently, the tour is going viral on our 32 mile island. A recent post on The Surfside Shuttle's offi cial Facebook paged received over 200,000 views within one week, and the team is ready to see what happens next.
"We really took to social media advertising to announce the beginning of the tour. Even though that is new, we have already had such great feed back. While the tour is currently only available in Orange Beach, we hope to be able to expand our horizons a bit and dive into Gulf Shores next. As of right now, people can book us online via Facebook, Messenger, or even text us in addition to the usual cell phone call. It alleviates the pressure off the customer to book right then and there without being scared to ask questions and say no."

“I sold three condos and one house down here and built a single house on the island soon after. Then, three years ago, I bought my first car, a 1934 Ford Coupe. Then I bought my second car, a 2013 60th anniversary white Corvette. A short time later, I had my third car, a 1963 Savoy muscle car. My collection started out small, but I wanted more. A warehouse would allow me to do

Jimmy Harrell casually entered the facility wearing shorts and a fishing top. If you did not know his hobby or collection existed and saw him on the street, you would think he is going out on the bay. Harrell grew up in Mobile, Ala. about one and half hours away from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach depend ing on traffic and relocated to Chickasaw once he joined the military, namely, the marines for five years.
After his tenure was over, Harrell jumped into making a name for himself in the machinery world with a small three employee company turned 235 employee com pany in 43 However,years. three years ago Harrell retired from the company but was not done living yet. Better yet, the start of living was not complete.
Jimmy G’s Toy Box is a toy box, but for an 80 year-old retiree with a passion and hobby for old cars. Upon pull ing into the Toy Box, the smell of clean rubber greets your nostrils and old gas pumps greet your vision.
However, once you step inside, the outside world no longer exists, and you are transported to the man cave of all man caves. Neon signs adorn the two story warehouse complete with a bar, televisions, more old gas pumps, and a play list so good that with every song change someone inside remarked, “man, this is a good song.”

“This project for me is a true labor of love, but I also get to share the benefits.” After all, his grandson works for him as well as only one out of nine ceramic coating certi fied appliers in the United States. Looking ahead, Harrell hopes to one day start leasing out the garage for small gath erings, parties, formals, promotion events, and more.
Even though the garage is decked out in all thingsshiny,detailed,old,andnew,JimmyG’s Toy Box is not just for his use. In fact, when we found out about Jimmy, his garage was being used by nearby Orange Beach High School for a carwash fundraiser.

HARRELLJIMMY that, so I partnered with Metron Garage and Loper Construction out of Bowling Green who put the garage together. My touches are in the garage. I knew I wanted neon lights up high so I had them add outlets close to the ceiling, and I had to have old gas pumps for decor. The bushwacker we know and love was invented in St Thomas, U.S.V.I. during the spring of 1975. After whipping up the new concoction, the bartender on staff named the drink after a patrons’s dog, Bushwack, an Afghan Hound. The drink was soon brought back stateside by bartenders from Florida after visiting the islands. If you order the bushwacker cocktail at a bar, they will sometimes put a “floater” on top of Bacardi 151--an extra shot of alcohol on top--or a flavored sauce. ingredients:directions: • 2 ounces Kahlua • 2 ounces Malibu • 1 ounce Creme de Cacao • 1½ ounces dark rum • 2 ounces half-and-half • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream • 1 to 2 cups ice crushed • Chocolate syrup • Splash of dark rum topper • Cherry garnish A bushwacker over looking the canal at GT's on the Bay. 1. Pour all alcohols and liqueur, half-and-half, ice cream, and ice in blender. Blend until smooth. 2. Swirl large glass with chocolate syrup. 3. Pour drink into glass. Top with splash of dark rum and garnish with a cherry. 4. Relax, kick back, and enjoy. One of the main bases for the drink is a hefty scoop of vanilla ice cream.
