September Style Issue

September 2025 PUBLISHER

David Mattaliano | david.mattaliano@citylifestyle.com

There’s a certain charm woven into the fabric of Grosse Pointe — a style that’s as layered and rich as the architecture lining our tree-canopied neighborhood streets. From the Georgian brick homes with their ivy-covered facades to residents who blend timeless fashion with modern flair, style here is more than what you wear — it’s how you live. Whether you’re browsing Haute Couture in a boutique, collecting vintage lithographs from across the globe, or restoring the elegance of a century-old interior, Grosse Pointe has a way of celebrating aesthetic excellence. This month, we had the joy of stepping into South Pointe Vintage, where owner Gina Piscopo curates a space that feels like walking into a European salon. Located on Mack Avenue, her antique store is filled with rare finds and conversation pieces that turn a house into a story. From mid-century Italian lamps, one of a kind European posters and lithographs, to ornate French mirrors, Gina’s handpicked items don’t just decorate — they elevate. With each item comes a touch of glamour, sophistication, and a bit of the world. Speaking of history and elegance, we also take a look inside 29 Fisher Road — a stately home with roots stretching back nearly a century. Connie Dunlap gave us a tour of this architectural gem that blends old-world craftsmanship with modern livability. It’s the kind of place that reminds you why Grosse Pointe remains one of Michigan’s most iconic residential communities. And yes — it’s available now for the next steward of its legacy. Of course, style isn’t limited to your address — it’s also in your wardrobe. Gigi Badalamenti of Pearl offers us a fall fashion preview that’s nothing short of inspired. This season, it’s all about bold layers, rich textures, and earthy palettes. Mocha isn’t just about coffee anymore — it’s the anchor color of the season. Think creamy knits, patterned scarves, and accessories that carry warmth and quiet elevation. Gigi reminds us that when the leaves begin to fall, your fashion can rise to the occasion. As we differentiate the select businesses that adorn our pages, follow us @ grossepointecitylifestyle to watch unique videos of those businesses and happenings in Grosse Pointe. Like, share, follow, and support these local businesses and families who are the core of the Grosse Pointe experience. Welcome to September — a celebration of personal style, curated living, and all things beautifully Grosse Pointe. D AV I D M AT TA L I A N O , P U B L I S H E R @GROSSEPOINTECITYLIFESTYLE

While newly built homes are great, they don’t have the fascinating histories that many older homes have embedded into their very bones. Fortunately, Grosse Pointe periodically has some of these gems waiting for new buyers to create their own special memories. One of these iconic homes is located at 29 Fisher Road, and it has an amazing story to tell. Looking at it today, you would never know that it was originally designed as horse stables as part of a much larger estate. The estate was built in 1913 for W. Howie Muir, a prominent Detroit businessman and one of the organizers of the Jenks & Muir Manufacturing Company, which manufactured brass and iron bedsteads. By 1922, the company was one of Detroit’s largest manufacturers outside of the auto industry. “The main house was located at 17805 East Jefferson, which later became 244 Lincoln, and the formal grounds and orchards stretched all the way from Lincoln to Fisher,” says Connie Dunlap, a CONTINUED >

Realtor® with Sine & Monaghan. The white stucco Colonial home, designed by the renowned designers Chittenden and Kotting, featured 35 rooms and a perfect lake view. In 1921, Matilda Dodge, a prominent figure of the early 20th century, acquired the estate from Muir after her husband, John Francis Dodge, died in 1920. A few years later, the avid horse rider enlisted the architectural firm of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls to convert part of her estate into stables. Post 1930, the stables were sold to Marion Knight Kellogg, who, along with his wife, Virginia Dryden Kellogg, converted the stables into a distinctive French country residence. the interior included a grand oak-paneled living room with high ceilings and elaborate fixtures. Today, the main house offers a generous 3,820 square feet of living space with four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. There’s a whimsical cupola on top of the home, and antique lampposts on each side of the front door. “These lampposts were reportedly brought back from Connecticut and date back as far as the 1800s,” she says. Walking through the front door, you’ll first step into a beautifully tiled entryway leading into a spacious great room filled with natural light. The room also boasts a majestic cathedral ceiling and a cozy fireplace surrounded by Pewabic tile, a hallmark of

[The Pewabic ceramic studio has been in the same building on East Jefferson Avenue since 1907.] Family and guests can also congregate in the large family room or walk out one of the French doors to relax in the plentiful outdoor areas on its 0.48-acre lot. “There are beautiful French doors throughout the house,” says Connie. “In the primary bedroom, there are French doors that lead out to a little garden and sitting area.” The first-level primary suite is large and luxurious, featuring a fireplace, an enormous walk-in closet, and a spacious en-suite that includes a luxurious jacuzzi tub and a double vanity. also an adjacent sitting area that enhances the ambience of a private retreat. In addition to the main house, there is also a lovely carriage house above the 3.5-car garage. There, you’ll find a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and full bathroom, providing a versatile living space for shortand long-term guests. The neighborhood boasts numerous sidewalks for homeowners to stroll, and it’s conveniently located in close proximity to schools, shopping, and parks. “Lake Shore is very close by, and the home is across the street from Grosse Pointe City Park, which has a marina with boat slips and places for kayaking,” she says. “There is also a swimming pool and a picnic area. It’s private, so you have to live in Grosse Pointe in order to use the facilities.” The area, explains Connie, used to be a popular summer getaway for city dwellers. “In the 1920s and 30s, there were cottages where people would come and stay for the summer.”

Actually, Howie Muir’s father, William Ker, had spent several summers in Grosse Pointe and ended up purchasing a property in 1882 that he had rented numerous times. He then had it rebuilt to become a permanent home for himself and his family. The Muir’s were one of the first families to make Grosse Pointe their permanent year-round home. It’s no wonder, says Connie, since the area has always been a wonderful place to live. She moved to Grosse Pointe when she was 26 and never left. “It feels like home to me now for sure,” she says. With her 30-plus years of experience, Connie specializes in representing clients in the purchase and sale of residences and condominiums in the Grosse Pointe communities. “I truly love this area and pride myself on my knowledge of current transactions, school districts, neighborhood information, and related services, including mortgage, insurance, and inspection information.” Sine & Monaghan Realtors, she says, also has deep local expertise, strong community presence, and a long-standing reputation for excellence. “Their professional, responsive agents provide personalized service, while their strategic digital marketing ensures your property receives maximum exposure,” she says. Connie is very proud to represent this home and share its history. “Unfortunately, there are very few properties still here from that era,” she says. If you’re interested in this historic home, or buying and selling another home, call or text Connie at 313-570-7515 or go to MiHomesNow. com/Team/Connie-Dunlap.

Little Treasures Everywhere

South Pointe Vintage 24

If every picture tells a story, then every room speaks volumes. Does your home convey the warmth and emotion of your family? Whether your vibe is cozy comfort, peace and goodwill, fun and playful, or any combination thereof, you can elevate the look and feel of your décor with a visit to South Pointe Vintage on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods. The shop is a treasure trove of vintage, one-of-a-kind items curated by owner Gina Piscopo, including antiques, art, rare finds, handcrafted jewelry, and gifts. The stock is always being updated, the result of fresh acquisitions from around the U.S. and Europe. The crown jewel of Gina’s collection is more than 3,000 vintage posters and lithographs, most of which trace their provenance to Nancy, France. Visitors to South Pointe Vintage have the advantage of expert advice from Gina, who has a lifelong passion for all things vintage. “These are statement pieces that can elevate the look and feel of your home, bring warmth and flair to what you already have,” she says. “It’s a way to show off your personal style with something that is unique to you that nobody else has.” A lithograph offers a pop of color with a three-dimensional quality. The result is a textured look that can add depth and warmth, Gina points out. Lithography is a form of printmaking introduced in the early 19th century, known for soft, fluid lines and rich shading. The process begins with etching an image on a stone or metal plate, then using chemical processes and a press to transfer that image onto newsprint. They became the earliest ad billboards, lining the sides of buildings in cities across Europe. Those advertisements are collectors’ items today, and many artists, such as Leonetto Cappiello, are highly sought. Gina has a number of Cappiello prints, in pristine condition, and iconic

brand images on display in her shop. Lithographs are a great investment, more affordable than an original oil painting, and they continue to appreciate over time. “Every lithograph tells a story, which makes them very well suited to Grosse Pointe homes that date to the 1920s, 30s and 40s,” Gina points out. “A well chosen lithograph or vintage poster can really complement the style and flair of a room, whether it’s Mid Century Modern, Traditional, Contemporary or American Colonial.” Gina will deliver a framed piece to a prospective client’s home so they can see how it looks in their intended space. “This is what I love to do. I travel all over the U.S. to find things that I’ve never seen before, or that I just have to have because it is in pristine condition and truly unique,” reports

Gina, who has additional finders in Europe. She goes on buying trips six times throughout the year. Her life partner owns Bix Furniture Service in Saint Clair Shores, which means she has access to expert craftspeople to restore any find to its original beauty. “There is no one else around here who has the inventory that I have,” Gina says. Clients include Le Suprême brasserie in the Book Tower in Detroit, and local interior designers in search of that special piece for a client. Gina worked in healthcare for many years, deciding to put her love of design to use by opening South Pointe Vintage in 2019. “I have always had an eye for little treasures,” she reports. She was born and raised on the east side, attended Regina High School, and then Eastern Michigan and Wayne State Universities. CONTINUED >

“A well chosen lithograph or vintage poster can really complement the style and flair of a room, whether

it’s Mid Century Modern, Traditional, Contemporary or American Colonial.” “I chose to open my store in Grosse Pointe because this is my community, and we have so much history here. So many of the objects I sell have a special feel to them. I love finding them and sharing them,” she explains. “There is a quality to one of a kind pieces that you can’t get from something that is mass-produced.” Establishing South Pointe Vintage was a natural next step. Items are priced as low as $20 and go up from there, with literally hundreds of pieces on display. One-of-a-kind gifts include, for example, a hand-blown

Polish octopus glass dating from the 1940s and a bottle opener made from Mother of Pearl in the shape of a fish. The shop itself is fun to explore. The 1400 squarefoot space houses cocktailware, vintage bar and gift items alongside restored lamps. Retro 1950s and 1960s hits play on a fully restored stereo console that belongs at home in a Brat Pack photo shoot from Las Vegas in its heyday. Visitors enter a soaring foyer constructed of reclaimed Tennessee barn wood strung with vintage lights of hammered metal. The cash register is a working National dating from the 1930s. The highlight is the gallery of vintage lithographs and posters with plenty of tabletop area to spread out for viewing. Browsing is encouraged! LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | STYLE + BE AU T Y

At Pearl, Fall is more than a season - it’s a statement. Rich, earthy brown hues are taking center stage this year, led by Pantone Color of the Year: Mocha. Trends of deep browns, warm neutrals, and thoughtful layering sets the tone for a season of grounded elegance. Standout pieces, such as Missoni’s iconic patterned scarves, blends artistry and warmth, offering the perfect pop of color and texture to complete any autumn look. This season, Pearl introduces a stunning lineup of new collections and exclusive arrivals that reflect the elevated mood of 2025 fashion. From the crisp tailoring of Frank & Eileen to the bold sophistication of Proenza Schouler, the season’s best silhouettes are already arriving. Expect a focus on rich textures, such as wool, cashmere, and leather—signatures of the quiet luxury movement. Pearl also debuts sculptural heels and boots from Sam Reychler, designed in Belgium and crafted in Italy. Beloved brands such as Max Mara Weekend and Loeffler Randall return with timeless textures and transitional pieces well-suited for Michigan’s shifting seasons. Whether curating a capsule wardrobe or searching for a statement piece, Pearl’s thoughtfully selected collections make Fall dressing feel effortless.
