LIFESTYLE LETTER

January Health & Wellness

January 2026 PUBLISHER

David Mattaliano | david.mattaliano@citylifestyle.com

As we tuck away the last ribbons of Christmas and step forward from the warmth of New Year’s celebrations, we hold tight to the memories made with family and friends—moments that remind us why our community is so special. The season gave us time to pause, reflect, and appreciate the blessings in our lives. And now, as we usher in 2026, Grosse Pointe City Lifestyle embraces its role as a leader in connecting the people of our city, celebrating who we are and strengthening the ties that make Grosse Pointe extraordinary. This January, our Health & Wellness Issue arrives at the perfect moment—when resolutions are fresh, motivation is high, and many of us are eager to chart a healthier, more intentional path. More than ever, strategies for living a long and healthy life are shifting away from traditional corporate medicine models that focus on treating symptoms. Instead, we are turning toward a new paradigm—one that recognizes us as unique individuals with distinct goals, ambitions, and visions for how we want to live. As the alarm sounds on high costs and the exhausting cycle of reactive care, a new form of wealth emerges: knowledge, longevity, and the ability to prevent health issues before they arise. After all, the greatest gift we can give ourselves— and those we love—is the ability to fully enjoy the family, assets, and joyful experiences we work so hard to build. Boutique-style concierge health care has become the modern vehicle for this transformation. It offers something many of us have been missing: the feeling of being seen, known, and cared for as more than just a number. In this issue, we sit down with Dr. Sean Casselman, founder and owner of Mission Metabolic Health, who shares how his concierge approach helps patients create personalized plans for longevity and disease prevention. We also speak with Dr. Jeffery Haddad of Rochester Advanced Dentistry, where technology, comfort, and individualized care come together to remove fear and elevate the patient experience. As we step confidently into the new year, may you commit to living your best life—healthy, inspired, and connected. And as always, Grosse Pointe City Lifestyle will continue to lead as others follow, celebrating the people who make this community unforgettable. Also, a thank you to all of you for supporting @grossepointecitylifestye “Heart of Grosse Pointe” campaign to support local businesses this holiday season. More to come in 2026! A CONCIERGE FOR DENTAL CARE When staying in an upscale hotel, a concierge is invaluable, especially if you aren’t familiar with the area. This local expert is available to answer all of your questions, give the best advice, and make you feel like you matter. What many people don’t know is that this same type of concierge service is available in the healthcare arena too. Some medical professionals make it their goal to provide not only the best possible outcomes, but also the best experiences. Dr. Jeffrey Haddad, owner and founder of Rochester Advanced Dentistry, delivers what he believes is the best in dentistry. With his team of highly trained and compassionate cosmetic dentists, his patients often say they have never enjoyed a dental experience like it. “It’s one of my favorite things to hear because it means we’re doing it right,” he says.

INITIAL CONTACT

Unlike most dental offices, when prospective patients call and then visit, they’re not immediately taken to a dental chair, given a cleaning, and introduced to the dentist, with whom they may only speak for a few minutes. Instead, they are escorted to a consultation room to meet with a new patient coordinator to determine how they would like to be cared for and discuss their overall goals. “We find out what we can do to give them the best experience and the best care for not only their mouth, but for their overall health.” (It has been proven that issues in the mouth can affect other areas of the body.) “This initial visit is very comprehensive, so we ask the proper questions and take photos. We also let patients ask questions and tell their stories about what may have happened in the past that they didn’t like.” His goal is to give patients a choice in their dental care. Some patients may want reactive dentistry, which is fixing something that’s already broken, while others, more importantly, desire a more preventative care approach. “If patients want to wait for things to break, we can fix it, and that’s fine,” says Dr. Haddad. “But a lot of people want to know ahead of time what the problems are so we can take care of them before something happens. This can save patients a lot of pain, time, and money because preventative treatment can be more conservative and less invasive.” Dr. Jeffrey Haddad

PERSONALIZED CARE

Concierge dentistry focuses on providing a personalized experience with treatment tailored to each patient’s needs. The doctor spends more time with fewer patients. This provides quality over quantity and allows for more attention and flexibility than the traditional/general setting. It also makes it possible for patients to see the same doctor, hygienist, and team dedicated to their customized care. “In this day and age of corporate medicine and franchise-type offices, patients are treated like a number,” says Dr. Haddad. “They are beginning to understand how important it is to have personalized attention. They want to be heard, especially when it comes to their health, and more and more patients are turning to concierge medicine when they know it’s out there.” It’s all about wellness, he explains. “Just as concierge medicine has reshaped primary care, dentistry is evolving to meet the demand for flexibility, comfort, and premium experiences.”

MAXIMUM COMFORT

We all know that tooth pain, before, during, and after treatment, can be debilitating. Dr. Haddad and his team want to eliminate this pain to the best of their abilities. CONTINUED >

He’s had many patients come from other offices, which may have been great in many ways, and the dental work did get done, but the experience was painful and even scary. This is why his office offers different levels of sedation. It could be as simple as mild sedation to more complete sedation, depending on what the patient needs to feel at ease. “One of my patients had PTSD from years of bad dentistry,” he says. “She was very scared and chose to have some sedation while I rebuilt her entire mouth all in one visit.” When she came in the next day, she told him that the two crowns she had done in the past were more traumatic than what he had done the previous day. Sedation provides a level of comfort, and there’s also an amnesic effect. “It makes the experience as ‘enjoyable’ as it can be,” says Dr. Haddad. “It’s dental work, and it still may be a big procedure, but we are as much about the experience as we are about the end result. I could give them the most beautiful smile in the world, but if I torture them while doing it, then I have failed.”

16

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

CONVENIENCE

Rochester Advanced Dentistry also respects people’s time by maximizing appointments to accomplish as much as possible in one visit. “We’re also a lot faster than the majority of offices, not because we rush, but because we have perfected these processes over the last 20-plus years. We are precise, and everything is planned out. Whereas a normal dental appointment elsewhere could take, say, two to three hours, it would take half the time in our office.” They also cater to people’s schedules. His team takes care of not only scheduling, but also lodging, meals, entertainment, and other needs, if necessary, for those coming from out of state, across the country, and even from outside the United States. “I have a gentleman who drives all the way from Grand Rapids,” says Dr. Haddad. “I rebuilt his whole mouth. He said he won’t go anywhere else. We have other patients with extreme and complex cases who fly in from other locations like Dallas, and last summer,

someone flew in from London, England.” He feels that people often go to the nearest dental office, but that’s not always the best solution. It’s worth traveling to find the best care. “There are patients who appreciate elite, personalized treatment and want to find a dentist who’s been appropriately trained and has advanced training. Even though it may be a 40-45 minute drive, I have many patients from Grosse Pointe because they want the best. They flat out say that they’re so glad they drove out here.” Actually, his newest associate, Michael Haddad (no relation), lives in Grosse Pointe. “He’s been a dentist for three and a half years, practicing in other offices, but he was not being fulfilled. He sought out this office because he was looking to perform elite and advanced dentistry. So now he’s commuting every day in order to do this.” (See sidebar for more about him.) CONTINUED >

EXPERTISE

“I call what we do ‘Life Changing Dentistry,’” says Dr. Haddad. “We have the level of expertise to manage large complex cases, and are actually known in the state of Michigan as well as nationally for being able to handle the cases that most dentists can’t. He adds, “Not all dentists are created equal, and it’s very sad to me because I have had many patients come in after they’ve been to so-called ‘cosmetic dentists’. I don’t know what was cosmetic about it. The patients were unhappy, and I had to redo all the work that was done.” Dr. Haddad always advises patients to do their research before making an appointment with any dentist. “First, look at their website and see the type of work they’re doing. Look at the photos and ask if that is their actual work. Sadly, some dentists will put other people’s dentistry on their websites. It’s not necessarily being

18

M UST SE E | HEALTH + W ELLN E SS

deceptive because they’re not saying it’s their work, but they’re putting it there, and people are assuming it is.” His patients, he says, will be offered the highest level of options, unlike what they may get in many other dental offices. “Most dentists are trained in tooth and gum disease. We are trained in what’s called bite disease.” Imbalanced bites are destructive because they can cause a wide range of dental problems, including broken and lost teeth. Most people don’t understand why they’re having these problems because they’re taking such good care of their teeth, but their dentists aren’t addressing their bite issues. Dr. Haddad explains that the reason their teeth have experienced significant wear and tear over the years is because of their bite, or because they’re clenchers or grinders. “We can actually help with that. We can give them a beautiful smile, but we can also give them proper function

INVESTMENT

Custom style dentistry is personalized and patient-centered. “We let patients know up front what we want to do and what we recommend,” he says. “We’re going to educate them on the solutions to give them exactly what they want. Whatever they choose, it is up to them, and we will respect that and give them what they’re asking for. I think that’s another thing that sets us apart. We don’t pressure anyone and tell them what they must do.” Patients are also informed of the costs up front, and if they can’t afford to do everything at once, they can do it in stages. “It’s a journey and an investment in your health,” says Dr. Haddad. While his team of professionals are also experts at working with people’s insurance, he believes insurance is sorely lacking when it comes to achieving optimal results. “We want to give our patients the best solutions for their health, and unfortunately, the majority of insurance plans don’t take that into consideration,” he says. “So, we educate patients on what is needed to make them the healthiest they can be, and when their insurance isn’t supporting that, they’ll know exactly what their out-ofpocket investment will be before moving forward.”

WELCOME TO THE TEAM

and rebuild things so they are stable, so they’re not going to clench or grind. And, this new, beautiful dental work is going to last.” Dr. Haddad and his team are also specialists in treating TMJ, which can cause migraines, headaches, ear and neck pain, and/or vertigo. “By treating the TMJ, we’re getting patients back to living their lives without pain,” he says.

Dr. Michael Haddad joined Rochester Advanced Dentistry in November of last year. A Grosse Pointe resident, his godmother is a long-time patient of Dr. Jeffrey Haddad and would often talk about him to her godson, even before he enrolled in dental school. She also gave him a book, Building a Healthy Smile That Lasts, that Dr. Jeffrey authored with another cosmetic dentist. “She told me he loved it and asked if I would be willing to speak with him,” says Dr. Jeffrey. “I said yes, of course.” Dr. Michael was looking for a different path. After graduating from dental school and practicing for a few years, he knew he wanted to take it to the next level. “I’ve been talking to him for about two years; he’s great, and I was really looking for a spot for him in my practice,” says Dr. Jeffrey. He finally found it. Now, Dr. Michael commutes every day from Grosse Pointe to Rochester to practice elite-level dentistry, or, as Dr. Jeffrey calls it, Life-Changing Dentistry.

ACCESS

His team is always readily available, whether by phone, text, or email - whichever patients prefer. “My team and I communicate with our patients, and I’m very proud of that because it helps put people at ease,” says Dr. Haddad. Patients who undergo anesthesia receive a phone call from their doctor at the end of the day, and all patients are given their doctor’s cell phone number for non-officehour concerns. “If there is a problem, they call us and we can put their minds at ease. It makes them feel comfortable knowing if what they’re feeling is normal.” Dr. Haddad and his team can also give them tips on what they can do at home to feel better. Other times, they’ll err on the side of caution and have patients meet them at the office, even on a Saturday or Sunday. “Our patients are so thankful because it gives them comfort to know that their doctors care about them,” he says. “And that is the ultimate goal.” Rochester Advanced Dentistry.com

LIVE LEANER, LONGER, BETTER! ARTICLE BY MARGARET CARROLL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIC NOVAK

New year, new you! There is great news for anyone whose New Year’s resolutions include goals for longevity and healthspan (which is everyone, including all of us who jingle-jangled our way through the holidays).

Concierge medicine and longevity-focused care are having a moment, and a great option is as close as Mission Metabolic Health on Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores near the border with Grosse Pointe. The practice is based on a model that emphasizes proactive routine preventative care, not reactive care. And if someone gets sick or needs more urgent attention, same-day and next-day appointments are available, as well as access to the doctor’s cell phone and email when the patient needs them most. “Our approach is to look at what barriers might arise to a person’s wellness, and plan how we can get ahead of it,” says founder Dr. Sean Cassleman. He and his staff at Mission Metabolic Health offer full-service, individualized healthcare management as well as in-house coaching on exercise and nutrition. This consists of executive-style annual physicals and longer routine appointments tailored to a patient’s needs (featuring ample time for patient interaction to discuss lifestyle choices and goals), rendering treatment for medical issues, strategizing and ordering tests, coordination of healthcare with outside medical specialists (Dr. Cassleman will even sit in with other medical specialists’ appointments to coordinate care when needed) to help provide clarity around making vital health decisions. The team also makes use of state-of-the-art testing and equipment to obtain accurate body composition measurements, hormone levels, in-depth lab testing, and more. An individualized personal diet, sleep, and fitness plan are central to Mission Metabolic Health’s approach. Dedicated onsite coaches oversee scheduled custom workouts and strength and mobility benchmarking in a clean, bright gym. “Measuring a person’s cardiorespiratory capacity, strength, stability, and mobility are essential to planning for their future health,” says Dr. Cassleman. The vibe throughout the sleek new facility (which opened a year ago) is visually pleasing and Zen. The reception room is spotless and airy, with limited seating by design, equipped with a selfserve pantry offering gourmet coffee, tea, water, and protein shakes.

“My vision is to help patients better understand their goals around health so they can have the best quality and duration of life possible.”

BEAUTIFUL EYES? LOOK

Dr. Cassleman established Mission Metabolic Health to carry out his vision of delivering high-level primary care for a seamless, stress-free experience where patients do not have to wait to get care. That vision is centered around a multidisciplinary approach focusing on the foundational lifestyle components of diet, exercise and sleep to achieve results. He came to believe in the tremendous power of that connection while completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Sinai Grace Hospital/DMC Medical Center in Detroit and practicing internal medicine in a primary care setting in Saint Clair Shores. “It was a wonderful place to train because I saw the full spectrum of disease,” Dr. Cassleman reports. “I also began to see the impact I could have on people’s lives through primary care.” Where traditional primary care falls short because of the time limitations and lack of focus on planning for the future, Mission Metabolic Health excels. Time and expertise allow for better planning around preventing what Dr. Cassleman calls the “axis of chronic disease.” He holds a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Bachelor of Science

from John Carroll University (where he played football). Dr. Cassleman began to see the limitations of traditional patient care that doesn’t necessarily address the root of a patient’s problem. “My vision is to help patients better understand how their health and fitness now can impact their goals around how long and how well they live,” Dr. Cassleman explains. “Physical fitness and medical health are very tightly linked.” Dr. Cassleman has a passion for helping each patient achieve their personal best level of wellness, and Mission Metabolic Health carries out his vision. The practice is unique in many ways. Dr. Cassleman maintains a low patient panel (less than 250) in order to provide the quality of care required to help patients achieve their personal best health and wellness goals. This means same-day and nextday appointments, easy access by way of cell phone, email, and coordination of care. Health insurance is accepted. There is an additional membership fee. “I have seen the wonderful things that can happen when a patient receives excellent care,” Dr. Cassleman points out. “Mission Metabolic Health is a vehicle to do just that. “My vision for Mission Metabolic Health is to help patients better understand their goals around health so they can have the best quality and duration of life possible. Oftentimes, simple but overlooked

interventions with supplementation, finding a convenient dietary change, a solid sleep strategy, and analyzing the need for each medication can make a huge impact,” Dr. Cassleman says. People who want longevity-focused care will find it here. Dr. Cassleman completed fellowship training in Obesity Medicine and has a particular interest in hormone testing and treatment. MMH’s tailored approach includes working with individual patients to find the best way to manage and prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular, cancer, neurodegenerative, metabolic disease (such as diabetes or overall frailty), and cancer. Dr. Casselman will coordinate advanced testing, including in-depth lab panels, whole body MRI, liquid biopsy, and advanced cardiovascular screening, and help patients navigate the results. Sometimes patients can seek this testing or obtain treatment online, but Dr. Cassleman cautions, “Who is following up on what is found?” He points out, “We are here to integrate those elements for our patients. “We can have a great impact when we listen to patients, and appropriately test and treat. There is so much opportunity to improve quality and quantity of life for men and women,” he adds, including helping patients navigate the rapidly evolving options for peptide treatments and the often confusing realm of supplements.

The process begins with foundational elements of sleep, diet, and exercise. “We have a staff of coaches to help and an in-house gym where people learn to lift weights with excellent form and progress their abilities,” he reports. MMH offers an osteoporosis weight-lifting class led by its lead trainer, Rosi Reeves, called Onero (they were first to offer it in Michigan). “We are not just trying to deliver more years of life, we are delivering higher quality years,” he points out. That involves working with patients to find areas in their life to improve: diet, exercise, sleep, optimizing use of medicines, reducing stress, integrating supplements, and being a resource if things go wrong. Dr. Sean Casselman and his wife, Dr. Carly Cassleman (she is a dentist), both grew up in Grosse Pointe, so it was a natural choice to set up practice here. He enjoys staying fit by spending time outdoors and going on walks with their five-yearold daughter, playing basketball and wing foiling, making pizza in his outdoor oven, and continuing to lift weights and stay active. Mission Metabolic Health has three coaches on staff who are certified in nutrition and strength training. It is located at 21444 Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores. Hours are Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Fridays, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Check out their website at: Missionmetabolichealth.com CONTINUED >

Ready to go from a sedentary life to living your best life? Here are suggestions from Dr. Sean Cassleman: “Start by thinking about what you want. What do you want the next year, five years, or 20 years to look like? What small changes can you make right now?” • Sleep: Sacrificing sleep in order to be productive can backfire; aim for at least seven hours. • Diet: Try cutting back on processed foods. Focus on lean, protein-rich foods. Shop around the perimeter of the grocery store. • Exercise: Start small and build momentum. Go for a 10-minute walk. After a week, can you increase the distance or frequency of your walks? • Find an accountability partner. This could be anyone, a spouse or other family member, a friend or coworker, someone to check in with about your new routine. If you need more help, seek a coach or trainer. • Be consistent. Building a new routine and sticking with it every day matters more than intensity or duration. You are building ‘muscle memory’ for a strong new life foundation. • Drink water. Water can help keep fatigue and hunger cravings at bay. A good rule is to divide your body weight in half and drink at least that many ounces daily (more if you work out really hard or it’s very hot.

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual

health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
