LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health & Wellness Grosse Pointe is an active community. Health and fitness permeate our local culture so we can enjoy the many resources around us. Visiting the parks and country clubs, enjoying the outdoors on Lake St. Clair, the youth and adult sports clubs and leagues, golfing, biking, walking, or running on Lakeshore, and the beautiful views… it's all about feeling good and living. We approached this issue with the theme of Health and Wellness and living your best life. We live and enjoy our moments while sustaining long-term health to bring energy and joy into our lives and those around us. How many times have we heard the most important thing is to have your health? Last year, my daughter was suffering headaches and issues from a TMJ diagnosis. It was causing a lot of frustration and anxiety. When we visited with Dr. Jeffrey Haddad, founder of Rochester Advanced Dentistry, he helped Ava devise a plan and take care of the issue. It was a relief to see her get back to being herself. In this issue, we speak with renowned cosmetic dentist Dr. Haddad about your overall health and how many problems can be diagnosed and treated through a comprehensive oral health view, improving our quality of life. We also spoke with board-certified neurosurgeon Dr. Brian Fiani of Mendelson Kornblum. Dr. Fiani was highly recruited and decided to return to his home in Michigan. Ivy-League and Fellowship trained, he brings excellent advice and guidance on the benefits of staying physically active, the best ways to keep moving as we age, and options for treatment when more severe spinal issues occur. "Horse Power" for learning! David Silver started the Detroit Horse Power program to bring Detroit kids opportunities to learn about horses and the lessons gained to succeed in life from the experience. Find out about what he has done and what's coming. We visit with Rhythm & Blue Juice Company to get a great recipe for healthy snacking. Snack well with this great tasty treat to keep you on the go and eating healthy. It's a healthy start to 2024. Happy New Year, Grosse Pointe!

“Cosmetic dentistry is not just about vanity. If someone is afraid to smile, it’s a quality-of-life problem.” We all know that dentists can fill cavities, place a crown over a tooth, and perform other teeth and gum remedies, but there's so much more to the profession. Instead of focusing on just the mouth, many oral treatments influence overall body health. "We treat things many don't even realize are in the arena of dentistry," says Dr. Jeffrey Haddad, a renowned cosmetic dentist and the founder of Rochester Advanced Dentistry in Rochester. "Since the mouth is the entryway to the body, if you have a disease in your mouth or a poor airway, it's going to affect the rest of your body." One of these issues is TMJ. "When people are suffering from migraines, headaches, ear and neck pain and/or vertigo, none of these symptoms sound like something a dentist could treat. But, by treating the TMJ, we're getting patients back to living their lives without pain."

Another issue he and his colleagues, Dr. Kurt Doolin and Dr. Nina Daws, deal with is snoring. He says many people poke fun at snoring, but it's really a serious matter. It has ruined marriages and can lead to multiple health problems. "When people snore, they're not breathing properly and not getting the healthy sleep they need," he says. "As things progress, it can turn into sleep apnea." This is not only a medical condition, says Dr. Haddad, but a serious one. "Sleep apnea can have adverse effects on the heart and the brain, resulting in high blood pressure and diabetes. One statistic shows that if people have even mild sleep apnea, they have twice the chance of having a heart attack than a smoker." People are often hesitant to undergo a sleep study and be diagnosed with sleep apnea because they fear having to use a CPAP machine every night, but that's not the CONTINUED >

only treatment. "Studies show mild and moderate sleep apnea is better treated with a custom sleep appliance. We make those and I actually wear one myself." When sleep apnea is suspected in their patients, they set up a simple home sleep study. "The results are read by a board-certified sleep specialist," says Dr. Haddad. "If we get a diagnosis of sleep apnea, we can treat it. Giving our patients proper healing and healthy sleep is the greatest gift we can give them because they don't realize how much their sleep affects their everyday lives. If we can get somebody back to that healing sleep, they'll have the energy to go about their day without a nap or maybe exercise again and get back in shape." He says when people are exhausted, it can also affect their personality and lead to anxiety. "There are a lot of patients who are on anxiety medication and antidepressants because they have an undiagnosed sleep breathing disorder. They might be able to get off these and some of their other medications. We're talking about life-changing dentistry." Dr. Haddad gets a lot of satisfaction from helping others, which is one of the main reasons he decided to go into dentistry, and he's primarily known

for cosmetic dentistry. "It's the perfect blend of science and art," he says. "We design smiles based on people's faces, on their gender, and on their complexions. A lot of training goes into creating great smiles. This is also life-changing dentistry. "We have patients who are afraid to smile or have been held back in the work environment because of how consciously or unconsciously they hide their smiles. Cosmetic dentistry is not just about vanity. If someone is afraid to smile, it's a quality-of-life problem." Rochester Advanced Dentistry also offers facial rejuvenation. "As teeth wear down over the years, it affects the shape and support of the face," he says. "We have a computerized system that can find out where those teeth once were, and we can literally give patients back that support, which takes 10 to 15 years off their faces. It's basically a non-surgical facelift." Dr. Haddad, who has been practicing for 22 years, loves building relationships with his patients. "When you're passionate about what you do and have the ability to change people's lives, it's a blessing." RochesterAdvancedDentristy.com

AGING redefined

TIPS FOR THE WINTER SEASON ARTICLE BY SUSAN BALDANI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KIMBERLY RENSBURG

As we age, the likelihood of falling and sustaining injuries from those falls increases dramatically. However, seniors are staying active longer, which is great, but performing activities safely is essential. "Winter is a particularly important time for people to be aware that slips and falls can jolt the pelvis and cause sacroiliitis, or SI for short," says Dr. Brian Fiani, a board-certified neurosurgeon with Ivy-League Fellowship training in minimally-invasive and complex spinal surgery. "But, don't let winter keep you from moving. We want people to stay active and stay fit all year round." Being too sedentary can decrease spinal health by weakening bones, he explains. "The more you do can really help strengthen the spine, decrease inflammation of the body, and help you stay healthy and functional." Dr. Fiani recommends getting out and enjoying the fresh air while walking on well-manicured sidewalks. However, if there's a lot of snow and ice on the ground, walk in malls and other indoor spaces instead. When outside, walk with others so someone is there to help you if you fall. "If you lose your balance and fall on your butt, it can cause compression of your bones, or you can have fractures of the lumbar spine or, even worse, up in the neck that might need surgical intervention," he says. Hitting your head can also result in a brain injury. It's critical to avoid walking on ice, but if you can't, he has some advice. "Have a slow, wide-based walking pattern." And wear appropriate footwear. Many seniors today participate in weightlifting and other load-bearing

"Winter is a particularly important time for people to be aware that slips and falls." activities that make their bones stronger and healthier. "They should do whatever exercises they can handle to keep their bones healthy," says Dr. Fiani. "I went to Detroit Country Day School here in Michigan, and our motto was, in Latin, men sana in corpore sano, which means a strong mind in a strong body. People's minds, bodies, and souls must stay active, especially during the wintertime. People should not hibernate." In addition to falls, many spine issues arise from sitting too long or, at the opposite end of the spectrum, working very hard with your hands and being on your feet for hours at a time. If you find yourself sitting too much, be sure to get up and walk around regularly. If you have to stand a lot, do the opposite. Take breaks to sit and rest your body. Dr. Fiani, who offers surgical and non-surgical interventions, was attracted to the medical field because he wanted to help others. "That was the most important factor in making me want to pursue not just the field but particularly neurosurgery," he says. "Neurosurgery is this specialty that allows me to make the biggest impact on other people's lives because there is nothing more special than the brain, and the spine is what's important for one's functionality on a day-to-day basis. It really

allows me to help others live not only their lives but also live them happily." He joined Mendelson Kornblum in Troy in 2023. "I was looking broadly across the entire country at the opportunities that were presented to me and who was recruiting me when I was in California and New York City," says Dr. Fiani. "And I was astounded at this opportunity in particular because of its capability of providing patients with a comprehensive spine center. Very few in the country have all the capabilities and specialists that one would need for their spine health and wellness. "That includes everything from a neurosurgeon like me, as well as orthopedic spine surgeons and pain management providers, who can provide our patients with non-operative modalities to help their pain." The practice even offers MRIs and physical therapy. What also attracted him to the practice was its location. "I originally grew up in Southeast Michigan, and so, for me, it was an extraordinary opportunity to take all of my education, training, strengths, and experience from over the past decade and bring those home to the great people of Michigan." His parents and an older brother still live in southeast Michigan. To learn more, go to MendelsonOrtho. com or call 1-877-BADBACK.

DETROIT HORSE POWER HELPING YOUTH IN DETROIT

POWER OF HORSES 24

I NSP IR E D BY | SP O RTS + RE CRE AT ION

It’s a program with a catchy name -Detroit Horse Power. But it has nothing to do with cars. Instead, it’s a program that started with a novel idea – to give Detroit kids

free summer camps as well as an afterschool program. Besides learning how to ride and care for horses, Silver said the kids have gained confidence, learned about

“THE BEAUTY IS APPLYING THAT CONFIDENCE AND SEEING THEM CONNECT WITH THE HORSES.” the chance to care for and ride horses. That dream has become a reality thanks to David Silver, a young former Detroit elementary school teacher who grew up around horses in the suburbs of New York City. Silver, a former competitive horseback rider, reasoned that such a program would give kids who would never otherwise be around horses the chance to learn perseverance, empathy, responsible risk-taking, confidence, and self-control, among other attributes. “Horses helped change my life when I was growing up, and I wanted the kids I’d seen to learn what they could take away from such an experience and apply to their everyday lives,” he said. In 2015, Detroit Horse Power launched two pilot summer camps that served 18 kids. Since then, the program has brought over 500 Detroit kids to horse barns outside the city for

being responsible for another (large) living creature and not giving up when things get hard – lessons that can help them succeed in life. “It’s teaching kids not only so much about horses but how to get through life and succeed,” he said. Now, plans are underway for the second part of the dream – turning a large piece of vacant land in Detroit into an equestrian center. In October 2019, the group reached an agreement with the Detroit Public Schools to acquire a 14-acre vacant former school site on which to build an urban equestrian center. The center, at Linwood and Fenkell on the city’s west side, was originally the site of the St. Francis Home for Boys and later the Paul Robeson Academy. The center’s plans envision stables for 17 horses, an indoor arena, an outdoor riding area and large grassy CONTINUED >

paddocks where the horses can graze. Groundbreaking is set for the middle of 2024, with the center opening in 2025. One of Detroit Horse Power’s volunteers is Michele Klippstein. She’s hosted events at her Grosse Pointe Farms home to introduce the program to the community. She’s very positive about the changes it can make. Already, $5 million has been raised for the center. Among the sponsors are the Wayne County Farm Bureau and Grosse Pointe Equestrian, the former Grosse Pointe Hunt Club in Grosse Pointe Woods, which hosted a program there with Detroit Horse Power on Dec. 3. Another volunteer who’s been with the program almost since the beginning is Elizabeth Tick of Grosse Pointe. She’s also been involved with fundraising, but she’s most enthusiastic about working as a youth leader with the kids in the program. “I have worked with kids who have never even seen a horse up close before, let alone ride one,” she said. “We had a sixth-grade girl who was so terrified to be on her horse and by the end of the supervised ride, she was hugging it around the neck.” “The beauty is applying that confidence and seeing them connect with the horses. There’s a lot of amazing life lessons the kids learn,” she said. She added that it’s not just about riding; students also get hands-on experience in the care and grooming of horses.

26

I NSP IR E D BY | SP O RTS + RE CRE AT ION

“IT’S TEACHING KIDS NOT ONLY SO MUCH ABOUT HORSES BUT HOW TO GET THROUGH LIFE AND SUCCEED.” “You don’t just get on a horse – there’s barn chores too,” she said. Le’Airra Jones of Detroit was in middle school when she joined the program. Now, she’s a senior at Cass Tech and still with the program. She remembers being asked about her hidden talents years ago in school. “I said, ‘Oh, I ride horses’, and everybody was like ‘Whoa!’ You do what?’ and I’m like ‘Oh, I ride horses’ and the whole lesson stopped. It’s just not a very common thing in the people of color community,” she said. To learn more about Detroit Horse Power, please visit detroithorsepower. org or call 313.899.0075
