We reach out to Nancy Cotton and learn about her non-profit organization Blanketed with Love. Started by the Blake family and now run by Nancy, over 750 blankets are locally hand made each year and given to those in need. How do we store couture and luxury accessories? We speak with Jennifer Kendall, manager and buyer at Coreander's Children's Bookshoppe in the Park. LOC A L NON - PROFIT PROVIDES WARMTH

Taking the time to make something with our hands to give to someone else is a true act of love. Nancy Cotton of Grosse Pointe Farms knows this well. Her nonprofit organization, Blanketed With Love, has been providing hand-made fleece blankets for people in need for over ten years. Originally founded by her neighbor, Anne Blake, and her daughters, Lilly, Maggie, and Sarah, Nancy took over running it five years ago. "The Blake family started it when the kids were in high school, and I was always super involved because I just loved it," she says. "I have an 11-year-old, Teddy, and a 13-year-old, Colin, and they started doing it with me when they were very little." Blanketed With Love donates over 750 blankets annually - all made by the loving hands of kids, teens, adults, and seniors. "One of the nicest parts about it is it's truly hands-on and an easy and accessible way for someone to make a difference without having to have a special skill set," says Nancy. Making the blankets is relatively easy and can be done at any time. "Basically, it is two pieces of felt, and you put the soft sides out, cut them, and tie them together. "You can do it on your own while having a glass of wine or while sitting and watching movies with your family," she says. "Even little kids can do it." If you are a beginner, it might take you 30 minutes to make one. "I usually suggest doing it with a partner, which is more fun because you can chit-chat while working." Almost every local school, says Nancy, including Grosse Pointe Academy, St. Paul, Grosse Pointe South High School, and Liggett has students

making these blankets. "It resonates with the kids that we donate to homeless kids and children who may not have enough to eat," she says. "It is so wonderful how many kids get into this, and it is their way of saying, 'I am so lucky that I have warmth and a cozy home and all the things we need.'" Making the blankets, she believes, makes them more empathic. One little girl wrote in a hand-made card that sometimes accompanies a blanket, "I know you think no one thinks about you, but I am thinking about you. So do not give up when you get scared." She also has a group of senior citizens meeting weekly for the last decade at the Helm to make blankets. "It resonates with them because we donate to the St. Patrick Senior Center downtown. So they make blankets for other seniors who may be lonely and need a little love and friendship." Additionally, Nancy often collaborates with her clients at the two fitness studios she owns, Corner Studio in Grosse Pointe Woods and Corner Studio Pilates and Lagree in Grosse Pointe City. "Last year, anybody who made a blanket for us got a free workout or a sauna." She recently opened Corner Active & Leisure in Grosse Pointe Park. Blanket-making events are also held throughout the year at venues such as Coreander's Children's Bookshoppe in Grosse Pointe Park, which Nancy owns with her husband, Sean, his brother Mike, his wife Lisa, and Sean and Mike's mother, Shery. She also hosts a blanket-making party yearly at the Country Club of Detroit. "The kids love it," she says. "We serve chicken fingers and fries, and it's just so cute." "There is the element of specialness that so many of these people we donate to feel a little more seen and thought about versus just giving them a storebought blanket. I cannot tell you how many little kids have told me that they cannot believe someone even knows about them or that they're cold when we hand these blankets to them. They're so thankful someone made this for them with their own hands." Many of the blankets, especially for children, are seasonal and colorful.

"Many kids in Grosse Pointe are so fortunate, and it's wonderful to see them get into this to help others." Another thing that Nancy loves about Blanketed With Love is that it's all local since it's important for her and her family to be involved in the community. "My husband recently ran for the school board and won. We're so excited about that. He and I also own the local newspaper, Grosse Pointe News." She adds, "I think our boys will be entrepreneurs too. Tips for Preserving your Couture

Owning couture is comparable to owning a prized work of art. Both are lovely to look at and add a touch of elegance to our lives. We become the easel or surface on which these creations are displayed for clothing and accessories. As with all highly treasured items, special care must be taken to retain their beauty and quality. Buying couture and other high-end clothing and accessories is an investment meant to last for many years and are commodities you’ll be able to wear to many grand events and special occasions. They’re not objects to be put away haphazardly in a closet or tossed in a pile in a drawer. Here, we consulted a specialist from Hindman. This internationally recognized fine art auction house recently celebrated 40 years in business, on the proper way to wear, preserve and enjoy these wearable pieces of art.“We all live busy lives, but I always advise those who are fortunate to collect or use luxury goods to take extra care with them,” says Tim Long, Hindman’s director and senior specialist for couture and luxury accessories. “When wearing high-end clothing, try to keep lotions,

If an item does become dirty, try to clean it as soon as possible.” Some simple measures can also help these special garments last longer. “For example, wearing a scarf not only brings attention to the wearer but also goes a long way in protecting a collar,” he says. When storing these items, especially for long periods, don’t use hangers as they increase the negative effects of gravity. “To avoid ‘hanger dimples’ around the shoulders, consider alternative storage for heavier items or knitwear that can stretch over time while hanging,” says Tim. “Also, avoid sunlight that fades textiles and place as many items into separate dust bags as possible.” CONTINUED >

If that is impossible, consult a local cleaner specializing in high-end clothing and accessories.”“When you’re out and about, be mindful to avoid placing handbags on the ground or dirty surfaces,” says Tim. “Also, store cosmetics or other products in a sealed pouch inside your handbag, or use a handbag liner. Always try to handle your bag with dry and clean hands and clean it with a soft, dry cloth or soft brush.”

For shoes, keep them in their original boxes or wrap them in dust bags. “It’s also a good idea to either use shoe trees, if originally provided, or stuff the toe of shoes and the leg of boots, so the items retain their shape. Bookshop in the Park Inspires the Community

Reading helps spark children’s imagination and opens up whole new worlds. It also builds vocabulary and comprehension and is a part of every subject, from math to science. It’s a skill that people use throughout their lifetimes. To help inspire a love of reading, Shery Cotton and her sons and daughters-in-law, Sean and Nancy and Mike and Lisa, founded Coreander’s Children’s Bookshoppe in Grosse Pointe Park in September of 2021. Within its walls, they have created a magical place where children (and adults) can find and read beloved classics and the latest releases. The store’s name actually comes from a character in The NeverEnding Story. When adults first come in, they often remark on how they would have loved to have had a place like this when they were children. When kids come in, says Jennifer Kendall, the shop’s manager and buyer, their jaws drop in wonder. “There are beautiful hand-painted murals that depict artistic versions of storybook characters from the Seven Dwarfs and Winnie the Pooh to characters from Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Peter Pan,” she says.

In its café, where they serve many local products such as fresh-pressed apple juice, coffees and cappuccinos, soft drinks, and ice cream, are smaller individual paintings of whimsical insects, which transform the cafe into a lively and fun space. “It just feels very cozy,” says Jennifer. “We have quiet little sitting areas, benches in the front and upstairs, plus a very unique spot under the staircase where the littlest visitors can go to hide out and read. There’s a window in that space, and even though it doesn’t open, they believe there must be something behind it, which is really neat.” When deciding what books to buy for the shop, she relies on her teacher and school administrator background. “Reading is the foundation for everything, and it’s critical to their education. Children need to expand their horizons and find a balance between the more traditional classics and current releases.” For young children, she says the Little Blue Truck board books are very popular, along with the Elephant & Piggie series. “Bigger kids have a beautiful section upstairs where CONTINUED >

emergent and chapter readers will find their world. They still pick up Judy Bloom and Clementine and Amelia Bedelia. She also reflects on the books she loved as a child, such as Make Way for Ducklings and anything by Jan Brett. “What always attracted me was that all the artwork was so beautiful. I’m also a classics girl, so I love The Trumpet of the Swan, Charlotte’s Web, and Little House on the Prairie, which we carry.” Her late mother, Jackie Johann, a teacher, helped inspire Jennifer and her sisters’ love of reading. And when Jennifer’s own children were little, she loved cuddling up with them in bed and reading. “It’s the passing of that generational love of reading from my mom to us, and from us to our kids that’s so special.” Despite all the other distractions, kids are reading. “Our big kids go tearing upstairs because they want to see what’s new or they want a specific book,” she says. “With little kids, it’s the art, the cover, and the texture of the pages - you don’t get that on a device.” In addition to children and young adult books, Coreander’s also carries a nice selection of adult books. “We have a strong science fiction section next to the young adult books. Many adults are reading young adult books, as well as Stephen King and George R.R. Martin. We have also expanded to offer many more cookbooks and coffee table books.” If they don’t have a book in stock, they’ll be happy to special order it for customers. Customers can also find jigsaw puzzles, stuffed animals, and greeting cards. Every Thursday they have story time in the Coreander’s Bookshoppe theater. Reserved seats are available on Eventbrite. “We are building relationships with families, which is huge,” she says. “By doing this, we’re changing people’s relationship with books and adding to their love of reading. You don’t find that online, and it’s also hard to find at larger chain bookstores.” CONTINUED >

Sweet Treat Table Surprise your children with a sweet treat table. Keep it simple with a few favorite snacks and candies, or for a more extravagant display, use fresh flowers and create a handmade centerpiece. To achieve this look, start by placing the largest greenery on the bottom layer in a circle around the table. Next layer varying types of greenery on top of the first layer in shorter widths to achieve the final look. Next add Valentine’s Day mini cupcakes, chocolate dipped Oreos, and Valentine’s Day cookies for an inviting sweet treat table. Valentine Tree To create this easy and eye-catching centerpiece, collect fallen branches and paint them white. We used a thrifted, repurposed white ceramic jar to assemble the branches in for the base. Use a floral foam to stabilize the branches, and place moss at the top of the jar. You can use this homemade tree for any occasion as it’s sturdy, and just about anything can be hung on it. Valentine’s Day Ornaments Create heart ornaments to hang on your Valentine Tree Centerpiece. These ornaments can be used as clue

cards for a kids Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt. Instruct children to find their picture on the tree and hunt for the hidden treasure in the house. We used recycled shipping boxes to create the heart base and painted them red. We then used a hole punch to create a lace-like edge to complete the look.
