Our August issue is dedicated to kids and pets. They both make us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder are refreshing.

I recently went on a family walk with my daughters Mia and Ava, and our dog Baxter (Kids n Pets, eh). As kids do, they have some grand plans to accomplish some things quickly and easily. It reminded me of a quote I recently read...

"When someone told Andy he should just let Opie decide for himself how he wanted to live. Andy had these words of wisdom..."No, I'm afraid it doesn't work that way. You can't let a young'n decide for himself. He'll grab at the first flashy thing with shiny ribbons on it. Then, when he finds out there's a hook on it, it's too late. Wrong ideas come packaged with so much glitter that it's hard to convince 'em that other things might be better off in the long run. All a parent can do is say, "wait" and "trust me", and try to keep temptation away."

The appearance of cracks in the interior and on the exterior of the home is common in Grosse Pointe. When this happens, the homeowner must decide the best time to get these problems addressed. TEEN ACNE For many adults, one of the most trying times in life they can remember may have been as a teenager dealing with an acne condition that diminished self-esteem. Oftentimes, acne may make you shy or embarrassed, can cause someone to be the subject of insensitive comments or ‘jokes’ made by others, and can decrease overall confidence or cause social withdrawal. Even as breakouts calm down or stop, sometimes there are scars and dark marks left behind as a result, and can be a reminder of emotional stress. Today, there are more options than ever that can help families get a handle on this common concern.

If you have a teen suffering from acne that is not under control, seeing a Board-Certified Dermatologist (an expert in treating skin conditions) is highly recommended. This is where you can get a professional assessment of your child’s type of acne condition, guidance, and a treatment program that will work for them.

What causes acne?

Acne is partly an inherited tendency, if other family members have a history of acne, you may be more likely to develop it as well, especially in the teen years. Androgen hormones that increase in boys and girls during puberty cause our oil or sebaceous glands to enlarge and make more sebum. The oil flows out onto the skin through our hair follicles. In the case of acne developing, pores become blocked and often inflamed with bacteria leading to pustules, blackheads, whiteheads, and cysts.

What medications can a dermatologist use to help manage my acne?

Prescription-strength topical agents are stronger and can be much more effective at targeting than over-the-counter (OTC) options. Prescribed options include: benzoyl peroxides, clindamycin, tretinoin, azelaic acid, dapsone, oral antibiotics minocycline and doxycycline, and Accutane can be given for more significant acne conditions. Accutane is the strongest acne medication and can potentially cure acne.

What OTC treatments can I try to help manage my acne?

1. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or glycolic acid cleansers 2. Topical treatments containing benzoyl peroxide for bacteria control, adapalene or retinol to exfoliate and keep pores clear, and sulfur to calm inflammation and absorb excess oil being produced 4. Certain probiotics taken orally 5. A moisturizer! A step skipped by many, the correct moisturizer actually helps to balance your skin. An oil free, skin hydrator containing acne-friendly ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which binds water moisture to your skin is important to skin healing and protection of the skin’s natural barrier function.

Using a moisturizer can help your skin tolerate certain drying acne medications. A moisturizer can also be helpful any time your skin feels dry, such as during the winter. To find a moisturizer that won’t cause breakouts, look for one of these descriptions on the container: • Oil-free • Non-comedogenic • Won’t clog pores

ACNE SKINCARE TIPS 1. Be gentle with your skin. Cleansing and exfoliating too often or scrubbing too much may cause more irritation and dryness. Make sure you have the appropriate products for your skin type.

2. Wash your face in lukewarm water twice a day, and immediately after sports/aerobic activities. A good idea is to keep facial cleansing wipes on-hand to remove surface sweat and dirt right away when full cleansing is not an option. If you have oily hair, be sure to shampoo daily.

3. Change pillowcases twice weekly.

4. Keep your hands off of your face! The urge to pick at your acne may be compelling, but it only causes more problems (adding/spreading bacteria, potential for dark marks or scarring and delayed healing).

5. Wear SPF30+ daily and stay out of the sun and tanning beds. Tanning damages your skin and alters its ability to heal properly. In addition, some acne medications make the skin very sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, which you get from both the sun and indoor tanning devices. FYI: Using tanning beds increases your risk for melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, by 75%.

ACNE TRIGGER FACTORS: 1. Moisturizers and cosmetic products that contain pore-clogging oils or skin irritants 2. Pressure on acne-affected areas with clothing such as hats, sporting equipment such as helmets and shoulder pads and backpacks 3. Stress can increase the hormone cortisol 4. People who have experienced anxiety and anxiety attacks know how debilitating and frightening these issues can be. While they're complicated for even the most capable adult to manage, children and adolescents have an even harder time understanding these feelings. Talking to friends and parents can help, of course. Still, a professional is often needed to listen to and teach kids coping mechanisms actively.

"The actual definition of mental health is how we address challenges in our lives," says Dr. Joseph Mifsud, a local doctor of clinical psychology. "Mental health is also about communication, establishing healthy relationships, and developing strong coping skills."

Especially over the last couple of years, challenges have been monumental. "We're now having a big wave of people who hit a fight or flight response at the beginning of the pandemic and never really came down from that state of hypervigilance," says Megan Gunnell, a Grosse Pointe psychotherapist and the founder and director of Thriving Well Institute and Thrive Advantage Group. "We all faced a tremendous amount of the two biggest factors that make anxiety spike – feeling trapped and uncertain."

So, how can parents tell if their children or teenagers are having trouble coping? "Parents need to be vigilant for any type of change in mood and things like withdrawing from social or family settings and isolating themselves," says Joseph. "Feelings of anxiety can make people feel hopeless, overwhelmed, and powerless."

Adds Megan, "They don't want to do the things they used to do, or they may lose interest in pleasurable things. One should also look for changes in sleep or appetite. I always tell parents, 'You have good instincts. Trust your intuition because if you feel like something is off and your child is just not acting like themselves, then there is a need for more support.'"

Parents can find support from a therapist specializing in child and adolescent anxiety.

"Teenagers might not have the most comfortability talking with parents about some of the things they're going through," says Kayla Pacic, a licensed professional counselor with Hope, Healing, and Health in St. Clair Shores.

"Parents being able to direct them to a mental health professional can be very important in helping treat depression, anxiety, and other life stressors they may be going through."

It's critical, explains Megan, that people feel seen and heard. "That alone is powerful because when you're struggling with something CONTINUED >

burdensome to you, it feels very isolating because you think you're abnormal."

First and foremost, she says, is to have a safe, nonjudgmental place to share thoughts and feelings. "That's super important and also very healing in and of itself. Then, it's all about solutions. We want to give people a ton of tools to help manage anxiety."

When someone has an anxiety attack, others may tell them to relax, but it's not that simple. "When the sympathetic nervous system is activated with anxiety, the heart rate increases, then our stress hormones are released and the fight or flight response can also be triggered," says Joseph. "My first goal when working with someone with anxiety is to teach mindfulness – the practice of being present, plus mindful breathing - taking nice deep breathes through your nose and exhaling through your mouth," Another way to reduce stress and anxiety is for kids and teens to have some downtime to refresh their minds and bodies. "It's important for parents to review their kids' schedules," says Kayla. "A lot of teens I work

Unfortunately, there's a shortage of therapists right now, says Megan. "I've never, ever in my whole history of being a therapist have seen a demand like this, so it takes a little patience and a lot of Googling, but there are good sites, like Psychology Today or TherapyDen. Those are well vetted."

She advises getting referrals from other trusted partners, such as your child's pediatrician or school counselor. Of course, you can also ask your insurance company to give you a list of people in your area trained in treating children and teenagers.

With the right help from professionals, a lot of love and support from their parents, and a little time, children and teens can learn to overcome their anxiety and live healthy and happy lives. And isn't that every parent's wish?

Looking to explore interesting places or find information about a new career? How about learning a new language or crocheting a beautiful blanket? Whatever your interests, there’s one place you can find what you need, and best of all, it’s free!

The Grosse Pointe Library system, from its Central location to its Ewald and Woods branches, has a vast collection of resources. Of course, when most people think of libraries, the first thing that comes to mind is books – those wonderful times that can take us out of our everyday lives and expose us to new experiences.

Historical fiction, for example, can take us back to the past while science fiction can catapult us into the future. If you’re looking to travel in person,

they have you covered with their collection of travel industry guides, including Lonely Planet and Fodor’s, as well as travel videos. And, to help you prepare for your trip and be ready to converse when you are there, sign up to learn a language through Mango.

With many people changing or losing jobs in the last couple of years, the library also provides materials to help find new ones and learn new marketable skills. If you have a library card, then you have free access to LinkedIn learning, a series of courses published by LinkedIn for job skills. There are resources on resume writing as well, and the ability to research publicly held businesses and companies, which can help job applicants prepare for interviews.

Niche Academy has tutorials on just about every topic, and other tutoring subscriptions include

Brainfuse and BrainHQ, online databases with everything from how to fix your car to investing in stocks. A database called CreativeBug has books and video classes taught by designers who can assist with learning how to paint and do other arts and crafts, whether just for enjoyment or to earn money.

You can also spend time delving into your family’s genealogy with MyHeritage and Ancestry.com or look up historical facts and figures through Local History Archives.

"I think everyone knows the Grosse Pointe Library is a great community resource, from books in any format to movies to research assistance to classes and lectures to internet access and even tools to help around the house,” says board member, Prudence Cole.

“But what I think is even more important is that it helps to make the community we all enjoy living in. It can be a quiet place where you can relax and read or a gathering place for students to study or where moms can have playtime with their children.”

Children can enjoy story times and other youth-oriented programs that are fun and educational. Parents can pick up story kits for young kids that include picture books, toys, and/or puppets that go along with the story.

Of course, the library continues to offer magazines, newspapers, and audiobooks on CD. Movies can also be downloaded free at home from Hoopla and Kanopy.

To enhance patrons' enjoyment even more, renovations have been underway at all three branches. “There are two phases to the improvements,” says Mary Short, marketing and programming coordinator.

“Phase one is completed and now we’re in phase two.” Renovations at the Ewald branch in Grosse Pointe Park are complete, while the Woods and Central branches are currently being renovated.

Ewald now has a refreshed look that includes new lighting and furnishings, plus a new lounge area with a living wall. The Woods branch is getting an improved and enhanced outdoor courtyard, lounge space with an area for the Friends of the Library book sales, and much more, while the Central branch is building a new outdoor plaza with an ADAcompliant ramp, multiple safety measures, and a drive-through window, to name just a few.

The Ewald and Woods branches are open and the Central Branch is scheduled to reopen in September of 2023. “In the meantime, we opened a Central Annex at 120 Kercheval on The Hill (across from the Bronze Door),” says Mary. “There are also drive-up drop boxes to return your library materials in the parking lots of the Grosse Pointe Park, Shores, and Woods city offices.”

The nonprofit Grosse Pointe Library Foundation (GPLF) is also dedicated to elevating the services of the Grosse Pointe Public Library system as well as ensuring its financial stability. Gifts made by generous donors to the organization have supported many programs, enhancements, and additions, including the restoration of the world-class art

housed at the Central branch, the purchasing of a van to deliver books between branches and schools, and a second entryway at Woods branch.

“This year, the GPLF is raising funds to support the expansion of the youth space at Central Branch,” says its Director, Paige Domzalski.

When it comes to capturing an image of our beloved kids and pets, it helps to have the energy to keep up with them. For photographer Barbara Dudley, the job is a natural fit for her dynamic personality.

“A subject that moves fast is easy because I can run after it,” she says. The youngest of six girls, her father not only produced films, but brought the family all over the world to make movies. With exposure to creativity and different cultures, Barbara gravitated toward photography

There’s no need for a fancy backdrop.

For the best background, like this blue wall, it’s okay to say, “Let’s move.”

Photograph a horse with ears forward. “A second person is useful to wave hands or toss a bit of dirt in the air for attention,” Barbara says.

For the candid feel of this image, Barbara photographed the dogs and owner as they interacted.

by assisting her dad, was on both sides of the camera as a model and photographer in New York, and worked for a daily newspaper in Connecticut. Today, after raising her own four children, Barbara enjoys seeing the world through photographs with her business that includes not only making pictures, but creating keepsakes from photographs such as tapestry blankets, stone coasters, tiles and cards. Barbara says that to create successful images of busy subjects, staying alert and focused is key along

with awareness that the most special images aren’t always staged right in front of you. She believes the best photo session is one where everyone is dressed comfortably and can be themselves. When photographing both children and animals, she says, “Let ‘em go. Let ‘em loose.” Barbara also says it’s important to keep your eyes open to the surroundings even while you move quickly, “The best shots may be right behind you.”

A Pointe In Time 15410 Windmill Pointe Designed by Alfred Hopkins for William P. Harris, Jr. 15410 Windmill Pointe, completed in 1924, is a splendid English Manor home located on the shores of Lake St. Clair. It was designed by Alfred Hopkins, a New York based architect who specialized in creating distinctive country estates for wealthy Americans.

Both the exterior and interior of the property are awash with many beautiful architectural details, including limestone carvings, inscriptions, and superb woodwork. The 20’ x 28’ sq ft living room has a stunning cathedral ceiling and several huge limestone arches’ - in front of the large two-story Tudor style casement window(s), the doorways, and the entrance to the library.

In 1929, William P. Harris, an investment banker and a significant authority on zoology, hired acclaimed Detroit architect Hugh T. Keyes to double the size of the house. Keyes was a respected figure in transforming existing older mansions into more suitable spaces for modern living, he completed several such projects in Grosse Pointe. 15410 Windmill Pointe was almost doubled in size to become the grand estate it is today.
