Summer is the perfect time to create a fun list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are those that reflect a slower pace and moments of enjoying what's around us. It is refreshing to take time, slow down, and enjoy the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhood. Backyard barbecues with friends, making s’mores by a fire, spending a day on the water or at one of our fantastic parks, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with Mia and Ava have been family favorites. We've always enjoyed the fireworks on Lake St. Clair, as well. In this issue, we wanted to share some of the happenings around our City this summer and ways to get out and explore together. We kick off with our Local Experiences reminding us of some of Grosse Pointe's greatest treasures...the Parks. Kids and parents hanging out at the pools and playscapes. It is a main hub of summer activity. The Village of Grosse Pointe is now a member of the Michigan Main Street Program. So what does that mean? Find out how plans for creating an atmosphere in the Village for people to stay and enjoy our local businesses and events throughout the summer and year round have been put into motion. We also visit Hotel Walloon. Be in the heart of Northern Michigan to relax or be adventurous in this historical location. A Pointe In Time 338 Provencal Designed by Raymond Carey (and Horace Esselstyn) for Howard F. Smith. 338 Provencal is an exquisite stone Tudor residence with all the hallmarks of an English estate. The asymmetric design has elegant limestone detailing around the large bay windows on the first floor, along with a striking slate roof. The exterior also includes a sundial – located above the dining room - and a multitude of stained glass windows. Inside, the property is spacious and airy. The grand entrance hall (14’ x 25’) features a large gathering area and a fireplace, from which one can access the distinctive 12’ x 25 ‘ sq ft corridor that has a groin-vaulted ceiling, a silver vault, along with a unique wire-cage open air elevator. Completed in 1928, the property was commissioned by Howard F. Smith, VP of the Canada and Dominion Sugar Company in Ontario. The architect, Raymond Carey, grew up in Bath, England, surrounded by some of the finest homes in the country. After settling in Detroit (around 1919), his work became extremely sought after and he became a key figure in creating magnificent Neo-Georgian and Tudor Revival style homes throughout the affluent suburbs of Metro Detroit during the 1920’s and 1930’s.

When the Village of Grosse Pointe was accepted into the Michigan Main Street program, which assists in revitalizing downtowns, it had four goals: helping businesses grow and prosper; increasing job opportunities; encouraging and supporting development in the community; and contributing to the overall economic stability of the community. In March of 2021, Cindy Willcock, who has a certification in Community Transformation and Leadership Development from the Main Street America Institute, was brought on board as executive director to work towards fulfilling these goals. “I love Main Street,” she says. “I love small businesses and entrepreneurs and what they stand for. And I love working with volunteers - Main Street is a volunteer-driven organization.” Cindy explains that the streetscapes downtown were already in good shape physically, but she and her team needed to figure out how to take it to the next level to really create that destination that everybody from in and out of the area wants to visit. “It should never be one person’s vision,” she says. “The reason Main Street works is

because of community input and all the stakeholders sharing their ideas.” Although there is a five-year track to get all of the goals accomplished, changes are already evident. The majority of the benches were replaced in the Village last year to encourage people to stay for a while. “For a small downtown, we’ve got great public gathering areas that are underutilized,” says Cindy. “So, how do we make those more attractive and encourage people to come and hang in the Village? Well, we have some fun things planned. “We’re currently partnering with an Eagle Scout candidate who’s working on a project to make some game tables for us, so we’ll have chess boards and checkerboards with drawers to store pieces. People can come out and play a game.” They’ve also been working on more streetscaping enhancements, such as upgrading lighting and holiday décor, adding speakers, and installing public Wi-Fi. Improving parking is on the agenda as well. In addition, Main Street Grosse Pointe is looking forward to bringing back events that have been on hiatus due to

COVID. “We’ll have music on the Plaza on Thursday evenings from July 14th through August 18th,” she says. “That rolls right into our sidewalk Sale-Ebration weekend. We’ll have the windows of storefronts painted with the theme of ‘Things with Wings.’ The interpretations will be interesting and we’ll have a contest for both kids and adults.” She adds, “We’re creating an atmosphere where people want to spend a day, and not just go to their favorite place and leave. We want them to discover something new, meet some new people, and have some new experiences.” Growing up and living in small towns herself, she understands the culture. “People communicate differently and have different relationships with their elected officials and their shop owners, which is neat,” says Cindy. “The residents of Grosse Pointe embrace and are so proud of their heritage and the history here.” She is committed to ensuring this pride continues in a bustling and lively downtown. SUMMER AT HOTEL WALLOON

UPNORTH RETREAT Situated steps away from Lake Walloon is a hotel full of charm, grace and good old-fashioned customer service. Although its lovely vintage style makes it appear like something out of the distant past, Hotel Walloon actually opened in 2016 and is chock full of all the modern amenities that guests appreciate. “We’ve got Alexa in all of our rooms, SMARTtechnology heating and cooling systems, and heated floors,” says General Manager, Emily Emmott. “We have 32 rooms of different types, so guests can have anywhere from a single queen bed to two queen beds, or corner suites, which have phenomenal views.” Most of the rooms have balconies, while others have semi-private porches with rockers that can be used all year round thanks to heaters and plastic coverings. Guests can also relax on the private beach or patio. But, the best amenity of all is provided by nature. “We’re right on the lake,” she says. “You can go jet skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Ernest Hemingway, who spent quite a bit of time there and incorporated many of the lakes and rivers into his books. Guests can also enjoy land activities such as hiking, biking, golfing and horseback riding, and since the hotel is near a ski resort, skiing in the winter. Mackinac Island is close by too and would make a fabulous day trip. “The cool thing about being centrally located is that we’re so close to all these different things that you can do to have an adventure,” says Emmott. The village of Walloon itself has been a tourist destination since the late 1800s, as transportation to northern Michigan improved and families wanted to take advantage of the many resorts that started to pop up in the area. In 1905, Walloon Lake Village sported a boat livery, three stores, a post office, two churches, and a smattering of cottages. Today, the picturesque village boasts clothing boutiques, gift shops, spas, and many other quaint treasures. There are also a number of amazing restaurants within close proximity of the hotel, so guests can indulge in gourmet cuisine or opt for casual fare or takeout. The hotel hosts weddings and other events either lakeside or in conjunction with other venues in town, and can help

plan every detail of a celebration. “We do everything from ceremonies and receptions to cocktail hours and corporate events,” says Jensen. The hotel property formerly held condominiums, so when the developer bought the property, the condos were demolished and the hotel was built from the ground up. Every detail was meticulously chosen to delight even the most hard-to-please guest. There are very few AAA Four Diamond properties in Michigan, and only two in northern Michigan. Latin Citrus Chicken Pinchos

Servings: Depends on your appetite

Ingredients: • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast • 1 tablespoon Goya Adobo Seasoning • 1 packet Goya Sazon seasoning • 1 tablespoon avocado oil • 1 pinch of salt or pepper • 1 tablespoon orange juice • 2 tablespoons minced garlic • 1 tablespoon oregano • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 stick melted butter • 1 whole orange and a lime

SUMMER IS HERE SO GO LIGHT UP THE GRILL. FIRST UP A JUICY AND FLAVORFUL ISLAND DISH.

Directions: Cut chicken into 1-inch cube pieces and place into a large mixing bowl. Add adobo, sazon, oil, salt and pepper, oregano, orange juice, and minced garlic. Mix well until all chicken pieces are covered. Place a lid or plastic wrap on container and marinate in fridge for 2-3 hours, overnight has better results. Soak skewers if wooden in water for 1hr prior to grilling. Remove chicken from fridge and skewer your desired amount. Turn grill on to medium heat. Slice orange and lime into quarters. Dash with some salt and grill until fine marks appear. Remove and let cool. In a small bowl melt butter and garlic powder. Add skewers to the grill for about 10 minutes rotating at every 3 and basting immediately with mixture. Remove from heat, squeeze the fruit over the skewers, and serve.

Pairs well with a chimichurri dip or your favorite BBQ sauce. Garlic or cilantro lime rice or tortillas. With BBQ side dishes or even fresh off the grill and with a cold drink of choice.
