281 University Designed by Charles Kotting for Harold Palmer. 281 University is one of the grand manor houses of Grosse Pointe. The property was commissioned by Harold Palmer, an attorney in Detroit who handled legal issues for the senators office. The walls, of the 8,800 sq ft Georgian residence, are believed to be 18” thick. The exterior features large arched windows on the first floor, and exquisite limestone detailing. Inside, the grand main hall is 33’ x 50’ sq ft, with dual staircases leading to the second floor. The walls in the 20’ x 30’ sq ft living room, and the 20’ x 24’ sq ft library are paneled in Italian oak wood. Both the 19’ x 9’ sq ft sun-room, and the 14’ x 13’ sq ft morning room feature a bay window, while there is also a huge 53’ x 12’ sq ft terrace with a screen and an awning on the side of the house. The property was designed by Charles Kotting, one of the most prestigious architects in the city of Detroit during the early 20th century. It is believed, during his career, having gained the reputation as an incredibly skilled designer, Charles Kotting created over 100 buildings in Metro Detroit, including several noted residences in Grosse Pointe.

STEVEN PASTEINER DESIGN COMMENTATOR Thirty two years ago a new car show was created in Grosse Pointe. The focus of the show was not “elegance” but rather the evolution and significance of design, and new design directions that have influenced others. As a designer, I greatly appreciate the work of Dr. Hessburg with the visually impaired and his vision of the future. I cannot think of a more worthwhile pursuit and I feel very honored to be part of EyesOn Design.

RICHARD PARKS LEADERSHIP TEAM MEMBER EyesOn Design is a series of events over three days with the purpose of raising funds for the visually impaired, so the entire weekend is what makes it so unique and enjoyable! I have been a volunteer for more than 25 years and have served in a number of roles during that time, up to and including General Chairman. As a result, I am now part of the leadership team.

Our design exhibition, EyesOn Design at Ford House, takes place annually on Father’s Day. This day is a culmination of the prior 365 days of planning. I enjoy working with the dedicated leadership of the EyesOn Design team and Dr. Phillip Hessburg. We share his passion and raise funds to help sight-challenged and/or non-sighted people obtain some form of vision through the programs and research of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology.

Unlike most of our judging by professional car designers, these individuals judge by touch to select a vehicle of their choice to receive the Visionaries Award. As a retired GM Designer, sight and touch are very important senses to creating an automobile design that is both visually and sculpturally exciting.

An evening of giving for The Grosse Pointe Chamber

Director of Administration, Regan Stolarski, at the Grosse Pointe Chamber is in charge of the Chamber’s largest fundraiser this year. Regan said that she is very excited about this year’s gala and she, along with the Committee Members David Balle, Ed Russell, Doug Blatt, Mary Wilson, Andre Ahee, Mark Heppner, Jody Ingle, Kris Mestdagh, Shane Reeside and Kevin Grady, will prepare for “a celebration of community” as it is written on the invitation. Legacy on the Lake will take place on the eve of June 23rd at the Eleanor & Edsel Ford House. Of the seven other events the Chamber is hosting, this signature event is celebrating its eighth anniversary. This year, the Chamber is honoring the legacy of Fred Alger. “With his return to Grosse Pointe following a successful life and career, Mr. Alger is personally investing in our community again in a significant way,” says Dr. David Balle, Chair of the Committee. “The most notable, is at the War Memorial.” In 1949, the Alger’s donated their home as a permanent war memorial in order to honor those that risked and gave

their lives in World War II and as a center for education, culture and patriotic activities. Recently, Mr. Alger donated $20 million more to fund programming and support of the arts and culture, improvements on the property and construction of a 25,000 square foot building which is expected to open this November. “We are honoring Fred because of his family Legacy of contributions that have been made to the Grosse Pointes in the past and more importantly because of the impact that he is making toward the Legacy of its future,” comments David. During the Pandemic, Legacy on the Lake was held virtually and last year, at the Ford House’s newest facility. This year, it is being moved back to the water’s edge. “Even though it is logistically more difficult to hold it in a tent and on the lake, it’s a lot more fun,” says Ed Russell, Committee Member. AN EXTRAORDINARY DAY BENEFITTING THE PALLIATIVE CARE PROGRAM AT C.S. MOTT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL

On Saturday, June 18th, the 4th annual Run, Walk n Roll 5K will begin at 9am at Grosse Pointe South High School. The event, which will be both in-person and virtual, will benefit the Pediatric Palliative Care Program at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor. What started as a way to help her sister has grown into a large fundraiser for Mott Children’s Hospital. Claire Sheeren’s sister, Elizabeth, was diagnosed with a number of auto-immune diseases early in life. Elizabeth has spent the past ten years in the care of Mott and has relied on their medical expertise and therapy. Claire, who was in high school at the time when Elizabeth became more acutely ill, felt hopeless and wanted to do something to give back to the hospital that has been instrumental in helping her sister. In 2019, Claire came up with a way.

While at South, Claire approached her track coach, Stephen Zaranek, about the idea, and Coach Zaranek helped Claire with the details and logistics. The first year, they had 550 participants and raised $46,000. The second year, which was only virtual because of the pandemic, raised $39,000. And in year three, as a hybrid event, they raised over $87,000. Looking back on the past races, she is very proud of what she started. “It’s amazing how much the event has expanded,” says Claire. “It just gets better every year.” But Claire is most excited about the impact that it has on the Pediatric Palliative Care Department. This year, their goal is $100,000 and the money will hopefully take the successful pilot Massage Therapy Program and turn it into a permanent one with a full-time therapist. The other initiative is to continue funding for a Child Life Specialist to help siblings and other family members battling complex and chronic diseases. “As a sibling, I know how much support is needed and how hard it can be,” says Claire. “There is a strong need for bereavement and other support for family members.” This important initiative is also on the table for this year. The entire Sheeren family have been actively involved in Elizabeth’s care and instrumental in the outreach to the community. Mother Julie, father Chris; brothers Jack and Thomas and sister Claire have been her biggest supporters. The family is very grateful for all of the community’s support. “The love for Elizabeth is overwhelming,” says mom Julie. The committee, sponsors, volunteers and participants have made this race, and its support for these very important initiatives, a reality every year. Claire is currently a sophomore at Wheaton College and will return to coordinate this special event along with its instrumental Executive Committee Members: Melissa Connell, Kathy Brennan, Liz Homsy, Maureen Krasner, Betsy Enders, Stacey Jeup-Bilderbeck, Jill Bommarito, and Shari Warezak. Other Austin districts worth checking out include well-known South Congress Avenue. While East Austin is a larger neighborhood, the depth of culture here is noteworthy. Six Square is Austin’s premier Black Cultural District near the beautiful grounds of the Texas State Cemetery. FUNDRAISER FOR THE DETROIT INSTITUTE OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

Initially, the idea was to have a car show in a small office parking lot as a fundraiser for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology in Grosse Pointe Park. Then the design vice-presidents at Chrysler, Ford and General Motors got involved. Now, more than three decades later, the event has grown into one of America’s top five car shows, according to USA Today, and “one of the best outdoor car events worldwide,” in the words of Car & Driver magazine. This year’s 35th annual EyesOn Design event resumes its traditional calendar date – Father’s Day, Sunday, June 19 – and will again be held at its traditional site, the spacious grounds of the Ford House, overlooking Lake St. Clair in Grosse Pointe Shores. Spread across the large lawn in front of the 60-room National Historic Landmark mansion, the event will showcase more than 150 of the best-looking vehicles of their eras in their classes. The theme for this year’s show is “Designed for Speed,” celebrating the beauty and design of racing cars through the decades. These range from early racers of the 1920s to Indianapolis 500 roadsters and classic NASCAR sedans and from winning sports cars to drag racers and street racers. One category will also display the evolution of the Ford GT, from its first version in 1963 through the 2017 production edition. Early

versions of the car are famed for winning the 24-hour Le Mans race in France four years in a row in the 1960s. Several Chevrolet Corvettes racers that competed at Le Mans will also be shown, along with a one-of-a-kind Corvette, the first to sport a V8 engine in 1955. The theme for the show is captured in this year’s poster, an impressionistic rendering of a sleek blue 1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe. The car was designed by the legendary Peter Brock, who is this year’s Lifetime Design Achievement honoree, as selected by the previous designers who won the award. The show will display a group of Brockdesigned cars, including an exact replica of the poster car, plus the 1959 Corvette Stingray racer seen for the past two years in a Detroit Institute of Arts exhibit, and a spectacular Triumph TR250KR racer, among others. The car show is the final event of the weekend’s activities, which include a Friday driving tour for enthusiasts on a winding route in southeastern Michigan and the Vision Honored event honoring Brock that evening at the M1 Concourse, a private test rack and garage complex in Pontiac. Saturday, June 18 brings a design symposium at the GM Design Dome in Warren and an evening “meet-and-greet” with Brock and Corvette designers at the GM Heritage Center.

Sunday also features an elegant Private Eyes brunch for designers, car owners and enthusiasts. The show honors its unique mission in another aspect – having a category of cars rated by visually-impaired judges wearing white gloves who select their winner by touch. The car show is 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Father’s Day. Show tickets are $35. Admission is free to active duty military and kids under 12 with an adult.
