January Health and Wellness It’s a new year which signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life has become, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on what the past year has taught us, how we want to grow and learn, and where we want to go. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority.

The past year was a year of perspective and fitness for our family. We were able to make some changes, lose some weight, and refocus from within. In the new year we hope to continue the progress and take more strides to physical and mental fitness.

Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. 1 Rathbone Place is an Italian Villa completed in 1917-18. The property was originally located on 1 acre of land, running from Jefferson to the lake. From its roots in the East, and over the last century, the art of yoga slowly moved into the Western world and into the hearts and bodies of many in the United States. People began to do it for many reasons – as a form of relaxation, meditation, exercise and/or agility.

“It’s really taken off in the last 30 years,” says Melissa Gray, co-founder of Living Waters Yoga, a faith-based yoga studio in Grosse Pointe. “Bikram [Choudhury, an Indian-born American yoga guru, and the founder of Bikram Yoga] showed that this was something Americans would do and he kind of opened the door to making it a little more user friendly here in the U.S.” There are many different types of yoga, from hatha and ashtanga to yin and hot. There are also faith-based yoga programs, like Living Waters Yoga and Holy Yoga, a nonprofit national brand with various local branches.

“Yoga has transformed itself into Western civilization to be more of a physical practice,” says Nakia Reeves, board president of Holy Yoga Detroit. “When incorporating yoga with meditation, it has benefits for both the body and mind. In Holy Yoga, we align our body and spirit with the Word of God and that’s what really separates us from the traditional practice.”

In a typical yoga class, she says, there would be some breath work, movement, and possibly meditation to clear the mind. Faith-based yoga usually incorporates breath CONTINUED >

work with prayer and scripture so it’s not necessarily an opportunity to clear the mind, but to have a centralized focus which is the Word of God. Classes are uplifting and joyful and worship music is often played in the background. “Many people think when you do yoga it has to be this quiet endeavor, but we like to bring fun into it,” says Nakia. “Practicing yoga and worshipping the Lord doesn’t have to be somber. People walk away with hope and excitement and that’s what we want people to know. That there is hope, there is light.”

For many, finding hope during the trials and tribulations of COVID has been a struggle. Faith-based yoga has allowed them to embrace all the positive benefits of yoga while tightening their bond with God. “Traditional yoga has more of an Eastern philosophy, which is fine, but because we’re Christians, we wanted the spiritual element of yoga to have a Christian base,” says Melissa. “We get a lot of Catholics, we get a lot of Protestants, and we also get a lot of people who just like it. My philosophy has always been of healing of mind, body and soul. I really like that threelegged prong, and that’s really what yoga is. It’s a balancing of those three.”

She believes faith-based yoga is needed now more than ever. “I’m very into reading statistics and stress levels are through the roof, mental illness is through the roof. And all the health issues – people dying from heart disease and diabetes are also through the roof. So this is a way to combat those things.”

Melissa discovered faith-based yoga when a friend’s daughter became certified to teach Christian Yoga. “She wanted to practice in my basement,” she says. “I just had a baby and needed to get back in shape. My friends found out about it and we were getting like 20 women coming to my basement to take yoga. From there, it exploded.”

Melissa loved it so much that she decided to get certified as well. She went to Arizona and trained with Yahweh Yoga, a Christian yoga teacher training program. She then came back and took over

teaching classes in her basement when the friend’s daughter went back to school.

“I started teaching classes twice a week, and my friend Sarah Holder thought this was totally cool and got certified as well. We then started teaching it together.”

With interest so great and growing, the two women moved their classes into an actual studio in town about 12 years ago, and Living Waters Yoga was officially founded. Now, Melissa and Sarah run the studio together.

Holy Yoga Detroit does not have a brick and mortar location. “We are a ministry that is called, and we go wherever we are called,” says Nakia. “That means if a church wants to experience Holy Yoga, we go there.” Classes have also been held in other places such as schools, foster homes, and senior citizen facilities.

“There are a lot of people who are dealing with addiction, they’re dealing with health issues, and they need to know that God loves them. It’s a way for them to meditate on the Word of God and to allow them to write it in their heart.

“And it’s important to move our bodies. We’ve become so sedentary – people couldn’t go to gyms or local yoga studios.”

Fight and Surrender is one of Holy Yoga’s signature classes and combines the serenity of yoga with the energy of cardio. The cardio is the fight and the yoga is the surrender. “Because in this life, you’re going to fight a little and sometimes you’re going to have to surrender some things,” says Nakia. “We take up arms to fight alongside the Lord but we also surrender those things that we can’t do on our own.”

Since yoga is moving meditation, she adds that it allows us to focus and calm the central nervous system. It allows us to incorporate our breath at a greater capacity. “We only use a certain amount of our lung capacity day to day. It might seem trivial when people say, ‘Take a breath.’ Taking a deep breath, filling up your lungs before emptying them out allows you to realign your focus and it’s so beneficial for our blood flow and our posture.

“There have been studies that have shown that yoga helps children with ADD [attention deficit disorder]; it helps them realign their focus. I’ve seen seniors who haven’t been able to walk properly stand up straight. It allows your body to elongate, to stretch, and be able to do the normal things in life.”

Holy Yoga plans to expand its offerings with what they call Experiences. In the new year, they hope to offer them monthly to get the word out. “It’s an opportunity for people who can’t come to a regular Holy Yoga class,” she says.

“So, one of the things we’ve done now that we can gather again in larger groups is create these experiences where people are able to set aside two hours in their day, come to an Experience and see

what the full spectrum of Holy Yoga Detroit is all about.” Nakia says they can then take that knowledge and those skills back to their local church or other organizations.

Since Holy Yoga is a nonprofit, these Experiences will also serve as a way to raise funds to pay their teachers. Usually, people and organizations pay what they can, and Holy Yoga asks for donations.

“The only thing we charge a set price for are the Experiences, which are very affordable.”

Another one of their goals is to start a pay-it-forward initiative. “Once we have an event, people will have an opportunity to secure a space for someone else in the next event. That will help us have the funds to do the events but to also get more people involved.”

At Living Waters Yoga, most participants come in two to three times per week and everyone is welcome. “In our yoga studio we have yoga for all levels,” says Melissa. “We had an 88-year-old come and do chair yoga with us. We have a whole program dedicated to special needs adults. We have super advanced flow yoga, gentle yoga and restorative yoga. We want to hit every base, but our heart is actually for those who say, ‘I’ve been to other yoga studios and I was intimidated.’ We are not about that, at all.”

“This type of yoga is so needed right now because during the last year and a half, people haven’t always been able to go to their church,” says Nakia. “They haven’t been able to go to work, or touch their loved ones.” Aside from yoga practice, she adds, faith-based yoga is important because it helps remind people of the Lord and to enable them to connect with the Lord.

It’s also a great alternative for those who have left their churches, she adds. “There are so many people who have walked away from God because they’ve been hurt in church, and some will never go back. But this is a way for them to be reminded that although they were hurt there, that wasn’t God. What we try to do with Holy Yoga is show that God loves you, and even if you don’t walk into another church, He will be wherever you are and this is a way to encounter God in a different way.”

What are some innovative orthodontic advances that have come out in the past decade or so that have improved outcomes for both children and adults?

Dr. Brynn Jezdimir – In the past decade, three dimensional scanning has helped to treat more patients comfortably and accurately. One such improvement has been the invention of Invisalign® and comparable products that allow for the treatment of complex cases in adults and children.

This scanning technology is used in place of taking impressions. Three dimensional pictures of your teeth are taken which enable the professional to create more comfortable and accurate appliances.

Why is it important for children to be evaluated by an orthodontist early in life?

Dr. Richard Frenchi – The American Association of Orthodontists recommends the first orthodontic visit at the age of 7. Oral habits such as thumb sucking, crowding, overbites – these are just a few

things that if you can catch early and treat early, makes development and eruption of permanent teeth a lot easier. It can also save a lot of time, money, and hassle for patients and their families.

Dr. William Krieg – If there is a large overbite, those upper incisors are more prone to fracture. Children can also have significant airway issues and early palate expansion can make a huge difference.

Dr. Jezdimir - Everyone used to just wait for all the teeth to come in, and then if there wasn’t room for all of them, some would be extracted. Addressing a constricted arch or crowding earlier by normalizing the width of the jaw are things you need to do early.

What about older adults? Is it ever too late to seek treatment?

Dr. Krieg – I just saw a 52-year-old patient with significant crowding and bite concerns and wonderful things for his alignment and function as well as for the health and longterm vitality of his teeth.

Besides cosmetic reasons, why is it important for overall oral health to have teeth that are aligned?

Dr. Frenchi - Having a well aligned bite and a good occlusion will provide for longevity of your teeth.

Dr. Jezdimir - Health and vitality of the teeth is key. If there is a bite concern, over time the teeth get worn down and become compromised.

Dr. Krieg – An attractive smile improves one’s self-image and confidence in life. You’re relating in a more positive way with those around you and it can really have a positive domino effect in all areas of life.

KID’S AND CHIROPRACTIC CARE As parents, we continue to adapt to new changes throughout the year to help our kids get back to a familiar routine with school.

We have strengthened their mental, social, and emotional wellbeing, but their overloaded backpacks and frequent use of technology have impacted our children physically.

Chiropractic care can be used for all family members including kids. Misalignments of the spine can be caused by many types of lifestyle issues. From the birthing process, sports injuries, and just everyday slips and falls. Even stress can affect your spinal health. A healthy spine can help increase your overall immune wellness.

Children’s spines and nervous systems are soft and flexible.

The human body grows quickly until about age 16 before slowing down and stabilizing for adulthood. These early years can determine how healthy a person will be as an adult. The spine is very

susceptible to injuries and uneven loads, which can cause vertebral subluxations—a misalignment in the spine causing nerve pressure. Since the spine and nervous system control all of the body's functions, not only can their musculoskeletal system be harmed, but also the respiratory, digestive, and cardiovascular systems. How your child carries their backpack, and maintains proper posture while using technology, is incredibly important to their health.

Recent public health changes have taken the backpack issue and amplified its effect on your child’s spine. Since returning to in-person learning, children are required to carry more than ever in their backpack. A typical 2-pound backpack now holds 2-pounds of school supplies, a 4-pound Chromebook, a 2-pound water bottle, and a 2-pound lunch. That is an additional 12-pound bag of potatoes each kid is carrying on top of those heavy books.

WHEN CHOOSING A BACKPACK, PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: 1. Start with a lightweight backpack 2. Make sure the shoulder straps are wide and padded 3. The backpack should also be padded 4. Look for a backpack with a waist strap 5. Multiple compartments are a plus 6. Both straps should be worn at the same time 7. DO NOT OVERLOAD! Tech neck or text neck is a new name for an old problem—neck pain caused by repetitive strain and injury to the muscles and soft tissue structures of the cervical spine. While a typical child’s head weighs between 6 and 10 pounds, a study quoted in the Washington Post reports that an adult head weighing 12 pounds and tilted forward just 15 degrees now puts 27 pounds of pressure

on the spine. At 45 degrees it’s 49 pounds, and 60 pounds at 60 degrees. How many kids have you seen tilting their heads more than 60 degrees forward while texting? It’s an epidemic!

SO, WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT IT? Chiropractic spinal adjustments are ideally suited to help our kids be happy and healthy. By gently realigning the vertebra of the neck and upper back, the nervous system can recover and help our kids be healthy again. Exercises will be prescribed to strengthen the muscles and ligaments so less damage will be caused going forward. And since our kids will need to continue to use their phones and backpacks during the school year, regular chiropractic checkups can keep them healthy.

In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery.

The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.”

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep.

The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth.
