A Pointe In Time 187 Irvine Lane Designed by Robert O. Derrick for Mrs. Sidney T. Miller Jr. 187 Irvine was completed in 1949, for Mrs. Sidney T. Miller Jr. It was one of Robert O. Derrick’s latter projects in Grosse Pointe, very different from his earlier more formal houses, and one of the final masterpieces’ he would create in the community. The property is a superb contemporary and traditional 4,602 sq ft home, built by prominent local builder Hilary Micou. The striking two story high bay window on the front elevation makes the design particularly distinctive. Robert O. Derrick also included many wonderful Georgian elements that were a big part of much of his work large windows on the first floor, a distinctive entrance, and quoins on the corner of each wall. The majestic formal gardens were designed by prominent local landscape architect Eleanor Roche who was originally from New York. She was one of several noted female designers who came to Grosse Pointe during the earlier part of the 20th century to create beautiful gardens for wealthy clientele.

Fresh Farm to Table with Forgotten Harvest

Ears of corn hang heavy on a tall stalk in the morning sun on a farm outside of Fenton, about 60 miles northwest of Detroit. Soon, they will be plucked by volunteers, stored for a few days in a refrigerated truck on site, and then on their way to the metro Detroit warehouse of Forgotten Harvest. From there, they will be included with a box of nutritious food for a needy and deserving family, distributed at one of 200 food programs supported by the Oak Park charity. This year, Forgotten Harvest expects to get about 530,000 pounds of corn, cabbage, lettuce, carrots, chili peppers, collard greens, eggplant, potatoes, and other vegetables from its 95-acre farm. That makes them part of a different kind of “farm-to-table” story – but it’s only a taste of what Forgotten Harvest does. In all, the organization expects to distribute over 42 million pounds of food this year – the equivalent of more than 35 million meals – most of it food that would otherwise have gone into landfills. The surplus packaged food is “rescued” from nearly 580 food businesses, from big chains like Kroger, Whole Foods, Meijer and Trader Joe’s to smaller retailers. About 10 million pounds comes from restaurants like Panera and Starbucks, plus caterers, bakeries and others, all gathered by “Harvest Heroes” who use their own cars and trucks to collect it. The enterprise really got started in 1990 after a suburban woman with a Jeep decided to do something about the travesty of perfectly good food being thrown away while families went without meals. Now, Forgotten Harvest is one of the largest food rescue operations in the country. Among those helped are senior citizens on fixed incomes and those struggling because of the pandemic economy. Besides its partners at mobile sites and traditional food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens, Forgotten Harvest also supplies pre-packaged meals to children who might not otherwise get something nutritious to eat. The supervisor of the children’s food program is Marguerite Kaiser, a Grosse Pointe Woods resident who drives daily to the charity’s brand new 77,000-square-foot warehouse on Eight Mile Road in Oak Park. The new facility doubled the space the charity had to collect, store and package food. Kaiser’s work concentrates on kids in suburbs like Sterling Heights, Flat Rock and Westland, places where you wouldn’t think kids go hungry. During summers when school is out and school meals aren’t available, the program feeds 75,000 kids. When school’s in session, they provide packaged meals to even more. “It’s been an eye-opening experience for me, the things people take for granted, and how CONTINUED >

grateful our kids are,” said Kaiser, recalling one little boy who’d never seen a hard-boiled egg before. The work is made possible by generous donors and 15,000 volunteers a year who want to help the hungry. More than 1,000 donors and volunteers are from the Grosse Pointes. Among them have been students from Grosse Pointe’s three high schools. And in September, the monthly hunger offering from Grosse Pointe Memorial Church will go to Forgotten Harvest. “We can’t do what we do without our volunteers and donors; it’s a collaborative effort,” said Tim Hudson, the organization’s chief development officer. And it couldn’t happen without those at the farm, the warehouse, those who drive the fleet of 50 donated trucks to food sites – and all of those who want to help their neighbors. GEM Eastern Market is a well-recognized landmark for most metro Detroiters. In the past few years, under the direction of Christine Quane, Food Hub and Innovation Director, it has evolved to include many new benefits to its customers, suppliers, and food entrepreneurs. In 2016, Eastern Market started responding to calls from farmers with more produce than they could sell. Simultaneously, some schools and restaurants were searching for ways to incorporate the new direction of fresh farmto-table foods onto their menus. It sounded like the perfect pairing of supply and demand, but it took many steps to make the process operate smoothly. Grow Eastern Market (GEM), a small farm wholesale development program, began by focusing on a contingency of small, local farmers to help them meet their distribution challenges. They coordinated produce and product timing to simplify and strengthen the supply chain. In essence, Eastern Market became Detroit’s local wholesaler. Dirt. Dock. Door Fast forward to the Pandemic. The buying communities evaporated as restaurants closed, children didn’t go to school, and people were afraid to leave the safety of their cars to enter grocery stores. To alleviate the problem, Eastern Market pivoted to provide an online market in a box for a typical family of four. They created a box filled with farm-fresh produce that could be picked up by car, contact-free, CONTINUED >

on Saturdays in the parking lot north of Shed 5. The program for the food boxes sold out the first week and expanded from 50 to 100 online orders the following week. The 100 boxes, however, were gone in the first hour, and soon, 350 online market orders became the norm during the Covid-19 quarantine. Since that successful experience, Eastern Market realized the benefits of expanding products and simplifying the process for Saturday pick-up. PARTNERSHIPS Significant Partnerships have emerged under Reid Walborn, Food Hub Manager, Eastern Market Partnership. In partnership with the Michigan Fitness Foundation, those using SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs) benefits can receive a $20 produce box for only $5 using their EBT/bridge cards. EASTERN MARKET KITCHENS In 2015, another innovation involved food entrepreneurs directly into Eastern Market kitchens to create their own products.
