for a short time to have dinner with the family and closed for a few days at Christmas and New Year. We were all together and my sister and I would always be able to talk mom and dad into opening presents after midnight mass on Christmas Eve. It was special. I imagine many of you have similar memories that warm the heart. Mom died a couple years ago and Dad many years ago, but they are always here with us. I have my family now, my bride Shelly and daughters Mia and Ava. We continue to work hard to make Christmas as special for them as it was for us. Over the years we created our traditions of decorating the Christmas tree together and pulling the Star of the Sea float in the Santa parade with an army of friends. Grosse Pointe is a wonderful place to spend Christmas. Memories and traditions at Christmas are a fabric of this community. I hope our magazine brings a bit more connection and holiday depth to you and your family. In this issue, we take a trip to the Great White North and explore Boyne Mountain in depth.

OOKING TO GET OUT OF THE HOUSE AND HAVE SOME FUN THIS WINTER? Then take a scenic drive north to Boyne Mountain Resort and
experience the magic of the season. What started out as a private little ski club in the 1940s by Everett Kircher, the Resort is now a four-season property with over 5000 acres of the best in accommodations and entertainment for the entire family. Everett’s son, Stephen, is the CEO and president and runs the resort along with other family members. Of course, skiing is their biggest offering, with over 415 skiable acres, 60 trails and 12 high speed lifts. “We have a tremendous amount of available acreage, which really allows people to spread out and enjoy the slopes,” says Erin Ernst, director of communications. “It has everything from the true beginner areas with magic carpet conveyors all the way up to expert terrain.” Another way to hit the slopes is with their newest offering, Sno-Go Bikes. “These bikes are pretty awesome if you’re looking to truly get on the slopes, but are not a skier or snowboarder,” she says. “They go up the chair lift and you can go down the slopes on them. There’s one board on the front and two boards on the bottom and you basically lift up your legs and steer with the handlebars just like a bike. They are super easy to use even on the larger slopes.” Another unique activity is their Zipline Adventures Tour. “We have a series of ziplines throughout the property, so guests start with a chairlift ride to the top of the hill and start there,” says Erin. “They are varying lengths and heights and then they go right over the heads of skiers and snowboarders with speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.” Tubing is also available. Since there’s a conveyor system to bring you right back to the top, you can have all the fun but none of the work of climbing up the hill again and again. For those who like to move a little slower in the snow, there are cross-country trails and a multi-use trail for snowshoeing and horseback riding. Ice skating is also offered. Ready for some indoor fun as well? Then, check out the 88,000 square foot Avalanche Bay, the largest indoor waterpark in Michigan. “We really worked hard on making sure it attracted older as well as younger kids,” says Erin. “There’s a big arcade inside and two eateries, and a full bar for mom and dad.” The waterpark is open mainly on the weekends during the winter season, but will be open daily over the holidays. Blocks of time are being reserved to keep the amount of people in attendance limited, as per COVID-19 guidelines. CONTINUED >

Of course, no resort would be complete without a spa. “We have the largest spa facility in Michigan with 19,500 square feet and 18 treatment rooms, so it has everything from hydrotherapy and facials to body treatments and massages,” she says. A full-service salon and an indoor/outdoor swimming pool are also open year round. If you’re hungry, there are a myriad of restaurants, cafés, pizzerias and taverns on-site. There’s fine dining in the main restaurant, but also plenty of grab and go type options from the Waffle Cabin and the very popular Happy’s Tacos truck that stops at the base of the hill. There are also Alpen huts scattered around the property selling hot dogs, sausages, and other quick bites. “The Eagle’s Nest, which is really a cool one, sits right on top of the hill, so it’s a true ski in, ski out, type of establishment,” says Erin. “It serves sandwiches and burgers and has a huge fireplace to warm up. There’s also a lot of historical and fun memorabilia there.” With over 400 accommodation units, guests can stay in everything from standard hotel rooms to condos and cabins with kitchens and multiple bedrooms. “Mountain Grand Lodge and Spa, which has 220 rooms and suites, is by far the largest accommodation we have on property,” she says. “Besides having the spa located there, it also has second floor access to the water park. It’s also our central check-in for all accommodations on property.” Boyne Mountain Resort is a great destination year round. Once the weather warms up, guests can enjoy its two golf courses, 11 tennis courts, a fly fishing outfitter for fishing in the rivers and streams in the area, and beach access on Deer Lake with all the true lake activities, including pedal boats. There are trails that are both paved and natural, and mountain bikers can even hook up their bikes to a ski lift to start at the top of the hill. There are also Segway tours, scenic chairlift rides, and a wakeboard camp in the summer. Everything is open to the public, so people can come for the day if they don’t have time to stay overnight. Boyne Mountain Resort is also focused on keeping guests and staff safe. “Since most of our activities are outdoors, we’re already well positioned for a lot of what is already required [for COVID-19],” she says. There is a section on its website devoted to winter operation plans and safety. “People tell us it’s a time to reconnect, whether during the holidays or just in general, when they come and stay with us,” says Erin. “They’re able to truly enjoy activities together as a family.” Boyne Mountain Resort is located in Boyne Falls Michigan. bullet journaling 101 ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
PHOTOGRAPHY ESTÉE JANSSENS
Let’s face it—in today’s so-much-to-do-and-so-little-time cultural mindset, it
can be hard to keep track of everything we need to do. Wake up—did you get enough sleep? Brush your teeth. Feed the kids. Feed the dog. Get ready for work. Make your lunch. Those are just six things to think about in the span of 15 minutes after your alarm goes off.
With all of these things to keep track of and our lives moving a mile a minute,
anything we can find to streamline our obligations (and our thoughts) can be a lifesaver! Enter: bullet journaling. It’s equal parts calendar, meal tracker, diary, self care and, well, really anything else that you want to keep tabs on! The “mindfulness practice disguised as a productivity system,” coined by creator Ryder Carroll, can help you master the art of intentional living—any way you want to.

ISSUES, BEHAVIORAL CHALLENGES AND DEVELOPMENTAL DIFFERENCES. Its mission is to help children heal, grow, dream and become the amazing people they were meant to be. The Children’s Center is warm and nurturing, and the environment is family oriented. “One of our core values is ensuring that our clients feel respected, so we work really hard to make sure our buildings are not just clean and tidy, but that they’re really welcoming and kid friendly,” says Tammy Zonker, chief philanthropy officer. “We have a green space and a koi pond; we want this to feel like a place of respite.” Currently, 7,500 Wayne County children from pre-birth to the age of 21 and their families are being given critically needed support. Many of these families are living in poverty, enrolled in Medicaid and on food assistance. “There are measurable differences between those who get help and those who don’t,” she says. “Sometimes people will ask how I can work at The Children’s Center since there are so many sad stories. The truth is, I know that the kids we’re able to serve do heal and progress, and those are happier stories. The kids we worry about are the ones who don’t come to us and need our services and support.” There is also assistance for teens who are 18 and have aged out of the foster care system. If they’re in college or in a vocational or trade program, they can enroll in volunteer foster care until they are 21. If they don’t continue with services at some level, Tammy says that 40% of them will become homeless within six months of aging out. The Center currently has about 250 employees, and Tammy says the great majority of them are master’s level clinicians. “Our clinicians are remarkable,” she says. “They go above and beyond, and have this ‘never say never’ attitude to really help children and families keep it together and build that base of stability to heal, grow and enjoy life.” In mid-March, when the pandemic hit Detroit, Tammy says they shifted to a remote workforce. Instead of serving children and families on their Midtown campus, or in their schools or their homes or community spaces, clinicians began providing telehealth services through video and telephone calls. Enrichment and educational activities also shifted online, so they continued to offer homework help, book clubs, and healthy cooking classes, as well as a virtual summer day camp. “As you can imagine, all this shifting was not in the budget,” she says. “Reduced service revenue, increased technology expenses, and cancelled or postponed fundraising events have made things very difficult, and we know it’s not over yet.” The Center has also experienced a big increase in need due to COVID-19. “When you have a mental and behavioral health disorder, stability is one of the most important things for children. The fact that they’re not in school, or not in school consistently, can make them feel isolated, and they don’t have access to two of the meals usually provided to them by the schools.” Without the assistance from the community, foundations and corporate partners, many of these services would not be possible. One of their biggest supporters is the Tau Beta Association. For the past 16 years, its members have given generously to fund enrichment and educational activities, and have dedicated hundreds of volunteer hours organizing fundraisers and donation drives for everything from school supplies and turkey dinners to items for the Holiday Shop. Tau Beta members transform an activity room into a winter wonderland complete with twinkle lights. Accepted families shop for their children, and then proceed to wrapping stations where volunteers serve as Santa’s helpers and wrap each gift with care. “Your financial contributions will help meet the greatest needs of children and families,” says Tammy. “Donations are down overall, but you can make a difference and provide a happy holiday and critically needed mental and behavioral health services this holiday season.” You can contribute at http://www.thechildrenscenter.com/crisis. The vast majority of payments come from Medicaid reimbursement, but rarely does this cover all of the costs. This year, she says, they’re challenged with a three to five million dollar gap that they need to fill via fundraising. Through December 7th, the Center is also seeking donations of new board games, puzzles, books, blankets and $25 Meijer gift cards, plus wrapping paper, gift bags and tape. Donations may be dropped off at The Children’s Center campus, located at 79 West Alexandrine, Detroit - Building 90. The center is in need of volunteers as well. Tammy encourages people to reach out to Cindy Read at cread@ thechildrenscenter.com to see how they can help. "Children deserve the opportunity to be all they can be,” says President and CEO, Debora Matthews. “It takes all of us working together to make that happen - especially now." Since late August, the Center has been phasing back into its campus location to serve families face to face whenever possible. “I want people to know that we are continuing to meet the needs of children and families,” says Tammy. “We’re still
