Boys Should Be Boys

A resurgence of the traditional man is coming. In the last 20 to 30 years, men have become a bit more, shall we say, softened. It used to be that boys would be boys. Youthful summers would be spent making wooden ramps for bikes, building forts in the woods and rafts to cross local retention ponds. Playing games like dodge ball, red rover, cream the carrier and lawn darts, or jarts. Skinned up knees from tackle football on the concrete and lots of broken bones. While many young men graduated and went on to college, there were just as many who went into family businesses, joined the military or went into the trades. All paths were equally respected.

Fast forward to a more recent generation.

Play dates were arranged, moms drove kids everywhere. A Friday night consisted of jumping on the Xbox and connecting with kids you've never even met to have an 8-10 hour gaming session. We track our kids on their iPhones that they got when they were 8 years old. Back in the day, the street lights were our tracking system. When they came on, you better be home. As for post high school, tech jobs recently have been the path. Learning how to make video games, podcasts and streams. Now please understand that I'm not criticizing these careers; in fact I'm a little jealous. I'm simply not smart in that way. It would take me a lifetime to acquire most of these skills, but careers in the trades and military fell off the table. Sure, there were still those who chose these paths but the percentages became extremely skewed and I don't think the respect was there.

Let's hit that fast forward button one more time. We're telling kids to go out and play. Get off the Playstation and go get dirty. Military enlistments are on the rise. Trade jobs are becoming more and more sought after, and definitely more respected. Guys are starting to do more "guy stuff." Blackstones became a thing, and we're building barndominiums, actually living in a barn. Men are beginning to regain their identity and the father figure is earning respect.

Now, I love every generation and my kids were part of the most recent, but it's so refreshing to see this shift. In honor of men, we welcome you to, and hope you enjoy, this "Men's" edition of Greenwood City Lifestyle

TAK Epoxy Crew Provides Home Improvement Through Expert Floor Coating Services

Top-Quality

Epoxy Flooring

Think about the benefits, aesthetic appeal and lasting joy of concrete floors that stay clean and protected year-round. Now dream about concrete that no longer traps dirt, dust, chemicals and bacteria. That's exactly what the three owners of TAK Epoxy -- Tyler Mauder, Aaron Kyle and Kyle O'Farrell -- envision and achieve with each refinishing project they execute.

"We're committed to delivering top-notch coating results at reasonable prices, using the latest techniques, products and equipment to ensure the best results possible," assures Aaron.

(L to R): Kyle O'Farrell, Tyler Mauder, Aaron Kyle.

He says while concrete "naturally dusts," their sealing processes and attention to detail prevent future damage from moisture, oil spills, UV rays, mishaps or heavy usage. He adds that every floor installed by TAK includes a diamond grind to ensure the concrete is level and previous coatings are removed.

Tyler says they provide complimentary consultations and free quotes, with options for one-day or two-day coatings. "We also offer a 7x14-foot trailer that can be used, if needed, for storing items while we're coating floors. We give you locks for it, and come back about four days after the project is finished to pick it up."

Aaron and Kyle first knew each other in high school. When all three men worked together as firefighters for the Bargersville Fire Department, they discovered they shared a common interest in improving safety in high-traffic or wet areas, especially through innovative, anti-skid materials. Hence, TAK Epoxy was launched from Martinsville.

Epoxy resin was first discovered during 1936 by Pierre Castan, a Swiss chemist and pioneer in resin development. Epoxies were synthesized during 1943, and commercial introduction occurred in 1946 at the Swiss Industry Fair.

Epoxy flooring comes in a variety of colors, patterns and finishes, allowing for customization and enhancing the overall appearance of spaces.

Aaron says they can clean, pressure-wash and seal around pools to maintain concrete's natural grip, or apply a coating designed for pool decks. Kyle says all their floor services are backed by written warranties, and come in 25-plus colors or completely customized options.

In online reviews, TAK Epoxy customers indicate the staff was professional and easy to work with, while answering all questions and leaving treated areas super clean.

Nick Weadick, Dogtopia/Top Tier K9

Do Hard Things / Why We Get Resilience Wrong and the Surprising Science of Real Toughness  by Steve Magness: "This book challenged me to reject mediocrity and pursue excellence. It shaped how I lead at Dogtopia, with pushing limits, embracing growth and believing young leaders can make a real impact."

Steve Huth Jr.,  Steve's Flowers and Gifts

Atomic Habits by James Clear: "I am a very 'routine' individual. This book has helped me recognize my bad habits, turn them into good habits and implement them into my routine."

Jesse Hunt, Humble Hunt's Services LLC

The movie, The Blind Side : "I could relate to that story from growing up with not having very much, but being surrounded by people who cared for me and helped me. I'm even always happy to watch this movie back-to-back."

Danny Crum, Merritt Hall Insurance

Maximum Achievement / Strategies and Skills That Will Unlock Your Hidden Powers to Succeed  by Brian Tracy: "It's a really solid, positive book about goal setting, with step-by-step tips. I found I could apply the business principles to my career, which really helped."

Anthony 'Tony' Scellato, YES Ministries

Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls: "My fourth grade teacher and basketball coach took days at school to read all the way through that book to us, with breaks just for recess or lunch. He was so good at reading, we could picture the story and put ourselves there. It all seemed very important."

Mike Duke, Duke Homes

"Two favorite movies -- Hoosiers, as I’m a Hoosier and love basketball! Many childhood memories, especially as a second grader and the little school at the time 1972 Center Grove Trojans making it to Hinkle in the Semi-State and experiencing 'the shot' by Guy Ogden to win that first game, was an unforgettable time of my life. Plus, my sweet wifey, Marcia, was a cheerleader in the movie and we got to go to the grand premier on the Circle. Pure Country features my favorite singer, George Strait. It has a great message of knowing where you came from, getting back to roots and doing things right."

Eshaan Lothe, PT, DPT, Golden Physical Therapy

The Bible and TV show "The Chosen": "Both of mine are faith-based, with the Bible being the book I most read. In this (historical drama) TV series, I enjoy seeing glimpses of the lives of Jesus and the Disciples. It's convicting, challenging but encouraging, and stirs viewers to live the way God wanted us to, loving others."

James Clingerman, Indiana Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy

DUDE FOOD MOOD

Hearty And Flavorful, These Dishes Have Been Staples For Years At Huckaby’s Smokehouse

In 2025, elevated comfort culinary options seem to be sought-after dude food, such as bacon egg and cheese egg rolls, deep fried cheesecake and keto jalapeño poppers. Some fusion desserts and unique chip flavors have surfaced, and pork and chicken are popular main entrees. But just ask Carl "Chef Chip" Huckaby II about foods most enjoyed by men, and he'll immediately say steaks, barbecue and ribs.

His housemade barbecue sauces span a red sweet/ spice, Alabama white and yellow Carolina mustard.

Healthy variations of "dude food" include creamy pasta with chicken, turkey burgers and taco salads.

"My objective is to provide unique, memorable eating-enhanced events from start to finish, for all budgets, venues and occasions. Everybody deserves good, fresh food," says the catering chef,

Carl "Chef Chip" Huckaby II
BY HUCKABY’S SMOKEHOUSE

HUCKABY’S SMOKEHOUSE

who enjoys topping steaks with mushrooms, blue cheese and onions.

While Chip closed the Huckaby’s Smokehouse location in Greenwood at 1140 North SR-135, Ste. K, during April, he plans to continue the catering portion of his business, still making great memories with organizations, social groups and school communities.

"This recent business transition is like a homecoming to me, because catering and concessions is where I started, and we've always handled it, too. But now we can completely focus on catering, including expanding our holiday pickup menus," he explains.

Chef Chip began his career standing on five-gallon buckets alongside his father, Chef Carl L. Huckaby CEC, CCE, CEPC, AAC, FMP. He says it was his greatest advantage to learn beside his father, his mentor, in their family bakeries and restaurants.

He’s worked at beloved restaurants: the Hillview Country Club in Franklin, the famed Chez Jean Restaurant Francais in Camby, as well as the

world-renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway as executive chef of the Brickyard Crossing Golf Resort & Inn. From there, he transitioned to helm Barto’s Banquets and Catering at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. In coalition with owner John Barto, they redefined the image of 'State Fair Food.'

He and John launched Food Guys Catering during January of 2014. During 2019, Chef Chip joined his expertise and Food Guys Catering with Keith Johnson at Smokehouse Catering Company to continue growing with each other and provide “Good Food Made Fresh.”

He says he and Keith picked up the storefront during COVID-19, mainly to help local customers with food items in short supply. "We were buying in bulk and preparing food when others were running out of ground beef, for example."

This chef surely enjoys helping others, as evidenced by his development of so many gluten-free menu choices. "We've learned how to work with allergies and diet sensitivities," he assures.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A COWBOY

DISCOVER THE WHIMSY OF THE WEST AT PAWS UP MONTANA

Favorably referred to as the “Last Best Place” and the “Treasure State,” Montana has captured the hearts of cinematic cowboys like Taylor Sheridan and Harrison Ford and inspired the television series, “Yellowstone” and its prequels, “1883” and “1923.”

Though fictional, they’ve reminded America of its deeply-rooted spirit for adventure and the simple yet rugged way of life that we all crave. Whether its the backdrop of jagged, snowcapped peaks or the endless golden pastures that are peppered with livestock, this Rocky Mountain soil is a breeding ground for dreamers and doers, and the people who call it home are no strangers to the ritual of ranch life. So, you want to be a cowboy? Slipping on some leather and having a little hide in your hat are good ways to start, but visiting a resort that brings the best of this life to the forefront, while also embracing modern luxury, is the experience of a lifetime. Paws Up Montana sprawls the distance of 37,000 private acres of historic estate-land, which houses a working ranch and 10 miles of Blackfoot river. Personalization is key—a divine selection of cuisine for the foodies, awe-inspiring activities for the adrenaline seekers, and world-class lodging that tickles every fancy from stargazing glamping, to timber-style family dwellings, to the uniquely designed green “o hauses” that invite the outside world in.

WHAT TO DO

To change your attitude, you need a change in altitude. Gain some speed or turn up the adrenaline level with ATV tours, electric biking, mountain biking, go-karts, paintball, rappelling down Lookout Rock or whitewater rafting down the Blackfoot River. Indulge in the western art of living with archery, fly-fishing, hiking or sporting clays. For those who want to immerse themselves in the language of horses, there are horse-related adventures such as lessons, grooming or feeding, horse-whispering workshops or organized trails rides. Riders can also enjoy cattle drives that bring you back to yesteryear—driving a herd of cattle across the famed landscape— and bear witness to mustang gentling, where the Equestrian Manager communicates with a wild horse through body language and tone of voice. Skyline Aerial Adventure Park is another notable warm-weather activity, taking guests on two high-ropes courses.

WHERE TO STAY

Luxury Homes are categorized into preference-based properties that boast the thrill of wilderness living. For larger families and multigenerational groups, consider the Wilderness Estates. At 3,250-square-feet, these estates sleep up to eight guests and feature three large suites with private baths. The Big Timber Homes are available in one-to-three bedroom options and come ornamented with fire places and private decks. The Meadow Homes are 1,100-square-foot single-story homes that sleep up to four guests, situated amid a pastoral and treed setting. For an extra nod of perfection, choose one of the luxury homes that comes equipped with a private tent— ideal for anyone traveling with children (or adults who beckon back their childhood!).

For a more primitive experience, Glamping Homes offer the right amount of canvas to create a close-to-nature experience. Available mid-May through mid-October, choose from river settings to creeksides, bluffs or cliffs. Each tent is adorned with something unique—a copper tub, a picturesque view of Lewis and Clark’s famous Lookout Rock and Western-chic furniture throughout. Zip down the windows to allow for the cool nightly breeze, yet enjoy the modern convenience of electricity. Each campsite has a dining pavilion. And don’t miss the s’mores boards around the communal fire pit, offered by your own s’moresologist—yes, you read that right, and yea, it’s a thing.

Lastly, but certainly not least, are the state-ofthe-art accommodations of the Green O hauses. This portion of the property is completely curated for those 21 years of age and older. It’s a resort within a resort, a hidden pearl in an oyster of experience. The Tree Haus is elevated 23 feet in the air and offers unparalleled forest views. The Green Haus includes a skylight above the bed for an unmatched view of pluck-em-from-the-sky stars. The Round Haus has curved, floor-to-ceiling windows that offer 180-degree panoramic views. Both the Green and Round Hauses are dog friendly, too, so Fido can rest in the lap of luxury. The Light Haus is illuminated by skylights and unique glass design.

HOW

TO GET HERE

Airport: Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) Airport transfers from Missoula are complimentary for guests and all luxury home and Green O accommodations come with a Lexus luxury SUV for transportation use on property.

Retro Movie Night

Enjoy a movie night together with popcorn, candy and all the fixings. Home movies enable strolls down memory lane, or one of his favorite movies from his childhood makes for fun conversation. Ordering a projector for a large format screening makes the movie night feel extra theatrical.

Learn Together

Learning a new skill together, or sharing a favorite hobby, is a great way to bond. If Dad likes woodworking or fishing, finding a class to attend together goes beyond gifting tools and allows fun.

Blast From The Past

Brainstorm childhood memories together and enjoy a day reliving them. If he chaperoned a trip to the zoo, experience it again together. If short on time, stop at a favorite ice cream stand and tell him how much you cherish the memories.
