So often we get caught up in life, kids' sports, jobs, housework and just plain living, I think we lose an important part of ourselves. The part that started our journey, our relationship with our spouse or significant other.
Do you remember the early days of dating? The excitement to go to new places and try new things, whether it was a fancy restaurant or fishing in the pond. It doesn't matter what your 'thing' is, but it does matter that you find the time to keep doing it with your partner. You may not love everything they want to do, and they may not like everything you love, but that's why it's a partnership.
Carve out some time, make it regular and stick with it. Whether it's every week, every other week or once a month, put it on the calendar and don't let anything get in the way because someday the kids will be gone, the housework will be done and the job will slow down. You'll wake up and be happy that you still know, understand and have a relationship with the person who started it all.
My wife and I have a date night every Wednesday. Almost nothing gets in the way of date night. Our kids know it, our friends know it and even a few of the local venues know it, so I'm going to challenge you. Find your date night. Put it on the calendar. Don't let Valentine's Day be the most romantic day of the year. Make Wednesday the most romantic day of the week.
To help you with this challenge, we decided to write this month about some of the best restaurants in the area. Try one out. If fine dining is not your thing, maybe fishing in the backyard is. We wrote about that, too. Like I said, it's not about the activity, it's about the connection with the person who will still be there when everything else is in the rearview mirror.
One event to consider for a one-of-a-kind date is the 5th Annual Death & Taxes Day at Taxman Brewing on April 27. Tickets are on sale now. This outdoor festival in downtown Bargersville highlights the best of local Indiana beer, wine, food and music. We'll see you there.
Thanks for reading. We hope you enjoy this edition.

Indiana Department of Transportation awarded Greenwood $1 million for upgrades to local roads and bridges. City officials state they will use the $1 million to complete paving projects on various roads, including Georgetown Road, Leah Way and Pilgrim Road. Satisfying one-stop shopping experiences for all things fishing, archery and hunting accessories are happily found at Honey Creek Tackle & Marine Center. Owner Jason Roberts assures that the store's atmosphere is geared toward supporting beginning outdoor enthusiasts as well as catering to serious industry tournament competitors.
"We're told we're one of the best outdoor sporting goods stores in the Midwest. Customers enjoy the camaraderie obvious in the store's atmosphere, and we enjoy treating everyone like one big family," explains Jason. "Because our store team all enjoy outdoor recreation ourselves, we have a vast amount of knowledge among us, including a retired Army colonel. We understand how important these aspects are in people's lifestyles."
Jason says customers can rest assured that they will be treated as part of a supportive, built-in community.
Located at 2380 N. State Road 135 in Bargersville, the store provides both new and used inventory. Jason opened the store during January 2010 after purchasing the property with his brother, Eddie Roberts, who established a NAPA Auto Parts store and repair shop on-site as well.
Jason appears to have been destined to pursue this type of retail career, given that he actually started as a tournament fisher himself and launched a tackle shop out of his personal garage during 2005. "Then I started selling items online, and the interest and business grew from there," he shares.
After increasing the store's footprint three times since opening and now with 17 employees, Jason has set his sights on another expansion. He says boat sales continue to
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMBER GILCRESTincrease, so he plans to add a new service center and remake the current one into a boat showroom. He adds that during the beginning of peak boating season, it's not unusual for them to receive 15 boats a weekend to service and tune-up.
"We all find working here very rewarding and the goal is to keep expanding to meet customers' needs," he adds.
Jason says he's a big proponent of B.A.S.S. Nation Series, which is a global network of locally organized fishing clubs whose members participate in and support a range of activities, including tournaments, conservation initiatives and youth programs. B.A.S.S. was formed in 1968 to promote and encourage fishing.
Locally, Jason sponsors the activities of members of the area's junior and high school chapter clubs. "In our region, these clubs have about six fishing tournaments a year with 100 boats. It's two anglers per boat, plus their observer. In addition to being their largest sponsor, we help out as observers when needed," he says.
"I really enjoy helping youth in this sport, and to witness their enthusiasm. Some kids that I've assisted at their junior levels have gone on to buy boats from me as adults. It's so nice to develop long-term relationships," he adds.
Jason typically hosts two large Expos annually, attracting national experts, such as Mark Menedez, Davy Hite, Ish Monroe and Josh Jones, to provide question-and-answer sessions and seminars. For example, during the 2024 HCT Winter Fishing Expo held Jan. 19-21, at least seven seminars were held. Guest speakers outline techniques, products and the benefits of being patient, observant, determined, educated, eco-friendly and adventurous when fishing.
"It was a super great turnout in January, as usual, due to our super loyal customers," says Jason.
"All the pros at our Expos tell us: 'You have the best clientele and one of best shows we have ever been a part of.'"
"The knowledgeable and extremely helpful staff find the right product to best fit your needs. Always excellent repair service. They have tons of inventory and if they don’t have what you're looking for, they'll try to get it."
HTC Expo attendees indicate they pick up unprecedented tips, and the caliber of these speakers is exceptional. Mark Menedez has been a full-time pro angler for 30 years. He's completed 271 tournaments to date, garnering $1.4 million. He has won three B.A.S.S. events, including an Elite tournament, Bassmaster Southern Open and Top 100 tournament. Mark has a degree in fisheries biology and frequently briefs legislative and conservation groups on invasive species issues. Davy Hite has been in 253 fishing tournaments to date, with career winnings of nearly $2 million. Elite angler Ish Monroe has 32 Top 10 finishes in his B.A.S.S. career. He's been in 254 tournaments and amassed $1.6 million. Josh Jones is referred to as the king of catching giant bass and is known for being excellent with the technology.
The HTC Fall Expo will be held during September, and Jason says specific dates will be announced later in the year.
HTC team members also organize swap meets, and the store also carries shelf-stable, survivor starter kits for food emergencies, along with bows, crossbows, firearms, accessories and boats (including brand names Phoenix, iKon, Blazer, Mercury, Skeeter and Ranger).

This is one of my constant “go to” DIY projects. It’s fast, it’s easy and it looks oh so professional. I love displaying photos, but I don’t necessarily love a lot of photo frames. These canvases create a crisp, clean look... All in about 30 minutes! Let’s get started.
STEP 1:
First things first, grab your supplies.
• Photo on photo paper
• 1 ½ inch thick wrapped canvas
• Mod Podge in Matte finish
• Black spray paint in Satin finish
• Clear spray paint in Satin finish
• 4 inch or 6 inch foam paint roller
• Small paint tray
Place your photo on the clean, dry canvas to make sure it fits correctly. Trim if necessary.
STEP 2:
Spray paint the canvas sides and a little of the top with the black spray paint. It is VERY important to let this dry completely.
STEP 3:
Using your foam roller, roll Mod Podge over the entire top of the canvas. Center your photo on top of the wet Mod Podge. Smooth the photo with your hands starting in the middle and pushing out toward the edges
STEP 4:
Roll a thin even layer of Mod Podge over your photo. This is a little scary “painting” over your photo, but I promise it will dry clear. Once it is covered with a thin layer start at one side and roll straight rows from side to side, in the same direction, as to avoid roller lines once it dries. If you see small bubbles in the wet Mod Podge, it is too thick. Thin it out by taking an almost dry roller over the photo to lift some of the Mod Podge. Repeat until the bubbles are gone. Let this dry completely.
STEP 5:
Spray the top and sides of the entire canvas and photo with satin spray paint. Dry…Hang….High Five. Congratulations on your new Photo Canvas!
This same technique can be used on 4x4 tiles of your choice to create custom coasters. You will add a bit of Peel and Stick Cork or felt to the back of the tile so the coaster doesn’t scratch. Cheers!
STYLE YOUR HOME IN TONES AND TEXTURES WITH DESIGN HELP FROM HOUZZ INTERIOR DESIGN EXPERTS
ARTICLE BY NICOLETTE MARTINDecorate your space with handmade textures such as the modern, maker revival of 1970s macramé and year-round tropical feel of wicker. MACRAMÉ Made through knotting instead of weaving, macramé can add a unique touch in many various ways. Houzz contributor Laura Gaskill suggests incorporating it as nursery decor, plant hangers, wall hangings and modern fiber arts. WICKER According to Houzz contributor Yanic Simard, “the best way to really embrace the luxury-cottage appeal of wicker and rattan is to combine different forms of the two in one space... Look for other unexpected places to add a natural twist to your home with a new material woven into your palette.”
Houzz contributor Katie Treggiden offers many ways to incorporate natural materials and natural-state timber into your home, including using wood to cover one wall in a home for a pleasing accent wall; featuring your firewood as a striking, stacked display; and mixing different types of wood and different finishes in the same space. “A simple way to incorporate the wood trend is to expose structural wooden beams already present in your home,” Katie says. “Instead of painting them or boxing them in, leave them raw or give them a coat of wax to enrich the tones.”
