Ashley Grudzinski of Greenwich Foody spills her secrets on the best spots around town
ARTICLE BY KELLIE KERWIN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY GRUDZINSKI
WHEN DID YOU START GREENWICH FOODY AND WHY?
Greenwich Foody began in July 2019. During high school, I realized my love for photography, traveling and showcasing the many different meals I had the pleasure of experiencing while on vacation. I wanted to share my love for dining out with other people who might be interested.
“The best advice for starting a food account? JUST DO IT! Don't let anybody stop you, no matter what.”
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT RUNNING YOUR ACCOUNT?
I have the unique opportunity to try a great deal of different restaurants and menu items from around town. I also get invited to private media events where I am able to taste the food and drinks prior to a restaurant opening to the general public. I truly enjoy helping get the word out about local businesses – new and existing. No matter where I go, I make sure to take aesthetically pleasing photos in case the food is good enough to get posted on my stories or feed.
WHAT IS THE BEST PART ABOUT FINDING NEW PLACES TO EXPLORE OR TRY AROUND TOWN?
I love finding new spots, especially in Greenwich because I find myself always going back to my usual "go to" restaurants. Although when something new and exciting comes around, I love sharing it with my followers to get them excited as well.
HOW DID IT FEEL TO HIT 10K FOLLOWERS?
FINALLY! For quite some time, it felt like I was at such a standstill, so I started to shift gears and began changing up my content by incorporating more lifestyle content, my own recipes and cooking videos. It helped push me to that 10K mark and now I am nearing 11K after only a few weeks.
IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST HIDDEN GEMS IN TOWN?
• Pizza Post, Cos Cob
• Island Fin Poke, Cos Cob
• Greenwich Pizza, Riverside (so delicious and very convenient for the Cos Cob side of town, especially for delivery)
• Neil’s On Wheel, Greenwich (served smash burger style, the owner Neil is always playing around with a fried pickle recipe because he knows how much I love them! I even asked him to make pickle spears, which he did just for me)
Neil's On Wheels
AND SECOND TO THAT, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BEST DISHES AT THESE PLACES?
• Pizza Post: The pasta dishes and paninis are my absolute favorite, which is on their special’s menu a few times every month. The Spaghetti Zucchini and Toscana Panini are to die for and you can't forget their whipped ricotta.
• Island Fin Poke: Build your own bowl with half shrimp, half chicken and a variety of different toppings, just pick your favorite.
• Greenwich Pizzeria: Delicious pizza across the board, you can’t go wrong with the classics or their special pies.
• Neil’s On Wheels: Neil's Way Burger and fried pickles.
TELL US THE MUST-TRY FOR EACH CATEGORY BELOW.
• Coffee shop: Lenny’s Bagels and order the Hawaiian coconut iced coffee
• Breakfast spot: Upper Crust Bagel
• Lunch spot: Grigg Street Pizza
• Deli: Makerie Café
• Dessert spot: Gofers Ice Cream
• Dinner spot: Miku or Terra
TELL US ABOUT SOME SECRET MENU ITEMS OR MENU ITEMS THAT YOU MADE GO VIRAL. The Pickle Sandwich at Makerie Café, Sicilian Vodka Pie with Tell Em Mike Sent You and the Italian combo sandwich from the menu at Old Greenwich Butcher shop is the best ever.
DESCRIBE THE TIME YOUR MOVIE THEATRE POPCORN VIDEO WENT VIRAL ON TIKTOK. WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE BEING ON RIDICULOUSNESS?
That was crazy! I am definitely a salty over sweet girl, so I randomly went to the movie theater to get popcorn. It happened to be closing, so one of the employees brought out a huge garbage bag filled to the top with popcorn. I was in shock and decided to make a random TikTok about it. The next thing I know, Barstool asked to post the video, as well as many other viral Instagram pages. A friend texted me saying that she saw me on Ridiculousness from MTV and my response to her was, "I think you texted the wrong person!" A minute later she rewound the TV and sent me the clip and there I was!
IS THE BEHIND THE SCENES, FILMING, TASTE TESTING, PHOTOGRAPHY, ETC. AS GLAMOROUS AS IT LOOKS?
Not at all, sometimes photoshoot after photoshoot gets super tiring and it's always nice to eat a home-cooked meal. Eating out every day/night takes a toll on you but I try to plan a few days a week where I can enjoy a cooked meal from myself or my family.
Grigg Street Pizza
The viral pickle sandwich from Makerie Café
“My
two favorite spots outside of Greenwich are Cafe Silvium for the Fettuccine Mascarpone, but substitute shrimp for chicken cutlet in Stamford and the Latusion Food Truck for Lomo Saltado in Harrison.”
HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR ACCOUNT STAND OUT FROM OTHERS?
I have been trying to incorporate more lifestyle into my food account, showcasing what it's like during "summer in Greenwich" or "summer at Tod's Point" for example. I am looking forward to creating new videos about fall activities, places to go and do fun fall things, etc. but every video will have some food aspect to it.
WHO
WOULD BE YOUR ULTIMATE COLLABORATOR?
RAOS! My dream is to dine there, not only for the food, but the overall experience. I would also love to collaborate with hotels to create a travel itinerary for my followers if they are looking for a weekend trip!
DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH GUY FIERI.
I’ve had the very fortunate opportunity to be a Productive Assistant with Guy Fieri for three
weeks while he was on the road filming “Guys All American Road Trip” last summer. This all happened after I was asked to be a customer when Diners, Drive-ins and Dives was filming at Corbo’s Deli in Stamford. I had zero experience but was able to travel with Guy and his team to South Dakota and Wyoming where we filmed for endless hours a day. His team loved my work ethic and invited me back to shoot other shows of his along the way, including Triple D Nation. It has been an experience of a lifetime that I will never forget.
WHAT IS YOUR JOB/OCCUPATION OUTSIDE OF CONTENT CREATION?
I have my own social media management and content creation business and manage mostly food-related accounts across Fairfield County. And secondly, I work part time at J. Bond Septic Service, which is my grandfather's business.
Ashley Grudzinski of Greenwich Foody
TANGO HOUSE
Art has a way of bringing people together in various forms. In this case, it was through dance, where Svetlana and Alan met. With their love of the 'Tango' they were able to bring a home of their dreams to life. Called, 'Tango House,' the homeowners say it was a project years in the making. Beauty of course takes time, but their vision was brought to life with various designers involved in the process.
"Watching this home grow from a blurry concept to the dream house we wake up to each morning has been one of the most exciting processes I’ve been involved with. It involved weekly team meetings for five years," said Svetlana.
ELEGANCE MEETS SUSTAINABILITY AT THIS UNIQUE GREENWICH PROPERTY
ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY COLE
One of the firms brought on board to make that vision possible was Carol Kurth Architecture + Interiors, an award-winning integrated full-service architecture and interior design firm located in Bedford, New York. Their role in bringing Tango House to life was the architect for the design of the project, and architect of record. The project consisted of a main home, pool house, pool, vegetable garden, chicken dome and many specialty spaces throughout such as the Tango studio and indoor pool, to highlight a few.
"A farm-to-table lifestyle was a thoughtful aspect to the project. Our client is an avid naturalist, as well as a fabulous cook, and combining her love of gardening with a passion for the outdoors was a fun and exciting design parameter," said Kurth. A mix of architecture can be seen throughout the property
but ties together in a breathtaking way, creating a personal oasis for the homeowners. That was critical in the design process.
"We set out to achieve an indoor/outdoor sanctuary focused on connectivity to nature and the site, and create a symbiotic relationship with the architecture and the landscape," explained Kurth. One of their exciting challenges was creating an eco-friendly home, something imperative for the homeowners. The team had to conduct substantial research to make this all possible. “Research included extensive exploration beyond reading, travel to see examples of products in use and attending lectures at the Audubon Society to learn more about birds and bird glass, as well as having samples of materials made to see their interaction with the environment over time,” Kurth told us.
“WATCHING THIS HOME GROW FROM A BLURRY
CONCEPT
TO THE DREAM HOUSE WE WAKE UP TO EACH MORNING HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING PROCESSES.”
"I asked our landscape architect for a design with minimal lawn and a diversity of native plants that could support insects and birds throughout the year. Our talented landscape design team brought this vision to life in the most delightful way, and I never tire of being outside to admire their work," homeowner Svetlana shared, "Greenwich has some great resources for those interested in learning how to garden in a way that’s healthier for the planet and for you. Check out the annual native plant sale at Greenwich Land Trust, and be sure to get there early! Waste Free Greenwich has great resources for learning about backyard composting."
Landscape Architect, Eric D. Groft was also a key asset in making Tango House become a reality. Through his team, research was conducted including learning the history of the property.
"This area had been pasture for most of the 19th and first half of the 20th century, in fact, there are remnant farm fieldstone walls that we rebuilt and gave us the inspiration for the stone pool wall. The agrarian roots of this site also gave us inspiration for the plant palette of native plants composed in a “design meadow” concept for the garden rooms around the house," said Groft.
Extensive plantings surrounding the home are hues of green, focused on texture
and form. Ample thought was given by Groft, to create successive waves of seasonal blooms, white crocus in early spring, followed by white daffodils, and white wood asters in the fall creating a visual delight with the change of season. Dramatic color changes in the plantings reflect the seasons. The organic vegetable garden, geodesic dome chicken coop are connected by tree lined pathways and easy access to the greenhouse and main house, to maximize efficiency for farm-to-table living.
"The vegetable garden was a strong desire of Svetlana and fell neatly into an area that was close to the kitchen, the utilitarian part of the property and had adequate sunlight on the west side of the property. We also thinned out the high oak canopy trees to let more light in on the south side," explained Groft.
The garden proved to be symbolic for not just the homeowners, but also the numerous team members who came together to work on this project. "We all thrived from the experience of designing and building together and all of us are so proud to be part of the Tango Team," said Kurth.

HOW DO YOU SERVE YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
I currently serve as a Trustee for the Bruce Museum as well as on the Town of Greenwich Board of Parks and Recreation and Co-Chair of the Parks and Recreation Foundation. I have a huge passion for non-profits which has developed over the past 25 years serving on and leading nonprofits in Town and was the basis for me founding my consulting company.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN GREENWICH?
As a second-generation Greenwich native, I can say that I have seen Greenwich change a lot over the 50 plus years I have lived here, but what hasn't changed is the deep sense of community that makes Greenwich special. How many communities in our
country are essentially run by a volunteer government with nearly 30 unpaid boards and commissions? Beyond the RTM, however, our community supports a vast network of charitable and community service organizations focused on all forms of need on a local, national, or even global basis. In addition, we show our children firsthand that giving back to the community does make a difference.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HIDDEN GEM IN TOWN?
The Greenwich Pool in Byram Park is a really special place. I am proud to have been part of the Junior League of Greenwich team that raised $2.5 million towards the public-private partnership with the Town to build a new outdoor community pool and revitalize Byram Park.

Embrace the season with autumnal ambiance and cuisine
ARTICLE BY ANNA BARNES
Flavors of Fall
As the autumn leaves start to fall and chillier winds blow into town, like clockwork I start to crave the flavors of fall: warmer, heartier, more savory dishes, and all the produce that become in season. We are so lucky to live in a part of the country that tends to “show off” during the fall season, but even luckier for us, our local restaurants do the same.
Le Penguin, Greenwich. I always crave buttery, decadent French cuisine in the fall. If the thought of a perfectly roasted chicken doesn’t do it for you, try the Filet au Poivre, which is sure to transport you to a night in Paris. A personal favorite of mine are the Mussels; magnifique.
LePenguinBistro.com
Walrus Alley, Westport. Walrus Alley has some of my favorite barbeque and southern flavors in our area. Think meats on the smoker, chili, southern fried chicken, and cornbread. This is best enjoyed on a breezy night on their patio, preferably with life music. While “meat” usually crosses your mind when thinking about a BBQ spot, don’t miss their Honey Mustard Brussels and Baked Mac & Cheese. WalrusAlley.com
Ginger Man, Greenwich. The welcoming ambiance and roaring fireplace inside Ginger Man are sure to warm you right up on a chilly Autumn night. While the menu is vast and has just about any delicious bite you may have a craving for, I was recently introduced to the Pesto Mac & Cheese, which I truly cannot recommend enough. GingerManGreenwich.com
Harvest, Greenwich. Remember the seasonal vegetables I mentioned? I absolutely adore the Shaved Brussels Sprout Salad at Harvest. Served with a parmesan risotto cake and dressed in truffle vinaigrette, this salad just screams fall! HarvestWineBar.com
Café Silvium, Stamford. Is there anything better in the world than a big bowl of fresh pasta? If there is, I don’t think I’ve discovered it yet. This is my pick for the best Italian in our community. Every dish is beyond fresh and the pasta is perfectly al dente. So sit down, indulge in one of their infamous wine pours, and enjoy! CafeSilviumCT.com

“We are lucky to live in a part of the country that tends to ‘show off’ during the fall, but even luckier for us, our local restaurants do the same.”
Hinoki, Greenwich. I know what you’re thinking: “how is sushi considered a fall flavor?” It’s not. To me, sushi is a continual, year-round craving. But if you’re looking for seasonal flavors while enjoying your Spicy Tuna Nori Tacos, get the Miso Eggplant and Grilled Chinese Broccoli. Heavenly! HinokiGreenwich.com
Mecha, Stamford, Norwalk, Fairfield. Pho and Ramen really shine during this season for me. The warm broth could warm you even amidst the most frigid of winds. With several flavor variations of Pho and Ramen, and a million other delicious items on their menu, you’re guaranteed to leave with a full belly. Oh, and don’t miss out on the mushroom dumplings! MechaNoodleBar.com
Tavern at GreyBarns, Norwalk. The Tavern is known for highlighting their relationships with local farms and
purveyors and even utilizes its own kitchen garden to enhance other seasonal ingredients. The menu showcases a delicious, new American cuisine which is best enjoyed in their lovely dining room filled with warm wood tones set amongst their incredibly scenic property. TavernAtGraybarns.com
The Granola Bar, Greenwich, Stamford, Darien, Westport, Fairfield. There’s no luxury greater than a slow, relaxed breakfast especially when it’s served at The Granola Bar. If seasonal coffee drinks are what you’re looking for, look no further. The Granola Bar has brought back their infamous Pumpkin Latte which arguably is the most fan favorite flavor of fall. If pumpkin isn’t your pick, try, my favorite, the Turkish Latte which has delightful notes of vanilla, cardamom and cinnamon. TheGranolaBar.com

Helping the Community
A spotlight on the work being done
at 'Mothers for Others'
MFO Co-Presidents
Karen Giannuzzi and Cathy De Graaff
Mothers for Others is Fairfield County’s largest independent diaper bank. Through their work, they provide diapers to families in the community that are experiencing diaper need. Diapers are distributed to families through a network of human service agency partners in Greenwich, Stamford, Darien and Norwalk, at community distribution events and to first time clients at their Greenwich office. Since 2016, they have provided over one million diapers to families in need. Greenwich Lifestyle caught up with Mothers for Others' founder and co-president, Karen Giannuzzi, who shared their mission as a group and the importance of helping the community.
GL: WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR MFO?
Our vision is to help families in Fairfield County who are struggling to meet their children’s basic needs. The cost to diaper one child for one year is approximately $1,000 and diapers are not covered by any government assistance. Our goal is to ensure that every child in our community has what they need to be clean, dry and healthy.
GL: WHY AND HOW WAS MOTHERS FOR OTHERS STARTED?
I founded Mothers for Others back in 2011 when I organized a holiday coat drive for Family Centers. With the help of my friends and family, Mothers for Others grew into a volunteer-based organization where the majority of our volunteers are mothers living in Greenwich. That first year, we held a clothing and equipment drive for over 100 people and began collecting gently used baby clothing and baby equipment on an ongoing basis. Parents and caregivers could shop our volunteer-staffed donation room for items they needed for their babies and toddlers. By 2016, we knew that many families who came to the donation room were also struggling to afford diapers. In order to address this unmet need, we added a
diaper bank inside the donation room. We now only distribute diapers and wipes.
GL: WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN THE COMMUNITY?
Collaboration and outreach are the main ways we operate within the community. We distribute diapers primarily through a network of human service agencies including Neighbor to Neighbor, Family Centers, Greenwich Department of Health and Human Services, Person to Person, Inspirica, Malta House, and Children’s Learning Center. We also work with Kids in Crisis and YWCA Domestic Abuse Services to provide diapers on an as-needed basis to families placed in emergency housing and with Jewish Family Services of Greenwich to provide diapers to refugee families in their resettlement program. We recently formed a new partnership with Filling in the Blanks and distribute diapers at their mobile food pantry on Saturdays in Stamford.
Our network of agency partners allows us to keep a pulse on the needs of the families in our area and creates an efficient model to reach as many families as we can. It also allows families to receive diapers in the same place where they are already receiving food, counseling or other services.
CONTINUED >
“Since 2016, Mothers for Others has provided over one million diapers to families in need.”
Once every quarter, Mothers for Others volunteers go to affordable housing complexes such as Wilbur Peck and set up a pop-up diaper bank in the parking lot. These community diaper distributions allow us to provide thousands of diapers within a couple hours and reach families experiencing diaper need directly where they live.
GL: WHERE CAN PEOPLE DONATE?
We love when people hold diaper drives to collect diapers. About 30% of our diaper inventory comes directly
from diaper donations! Many local preschools, school organizations and businesses have held diaper drives on our behalf - those that have held them this past year include: North Street School, First Presbyterian Preschool, YWCA, Temple Shalom, Old Greenwich School, Putnam Indian Field School, Bridges Nursery School, St. Paul’s Preschool, Bright Horizons, Brunswick School, Children’s Day School, First Congregational Church Preschool, Greenwich Bank and Trust, Prosek Partners, Sacred Heart, and St. Saviours.
Mothers for Others
Mothers for Others accepts diaper donations, but encourages monetary donations as a way to make an even bigger impact. Donations allow them to purchase diapers at wholesale prices and ensure they have all sizes well stocked.
To learn more about holding a diaper drive or to make a donation visit: www.mothersforothers.org or email info@mothersforothers.org.

EXPLORING SOUTH COUNTY: A ROMANCE WITH THE COAST
Beyond the comforts of the inn, South County beckons with its natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant community. This region, known for its pristine beaches, charming villages, and lush landscapes, offers endless opportunities for adventure and relaxation.
Start your exploration in Watch Hill, a coastal village known for its elegant homes, historic landmarks, and sweeping ocean views. Visit the Watch Hill Lighthouse or take a ride on the Flying Horse Carousel, the oldest continuously operating carousel in the United States. For beach lovers, both East Beach and Napatree Point provide a serene setting for sunbathing, swimming, and beachcombing.
In nearby Charlestown, immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge, where you can hike trails that wind through salt marshes, coastal ponds, and upland forests. The refuge is also a prime spot for birdwatching, especially during the migratory season.
FALLING IN LOVE WITH SOUTH COUNTY
The charm of South County is especially magical in the fall. As the leaves change color, the region transforms into a kaleidoscope of reds, oranges, and yellows. Take a scenic drive along Route 1, stopping at local farm stands to pick up fresh apples, pumpkins, and homemade pies. The fall season also brings a host of festivals and events, offering a perfect blend of local culture and community spirit.
One of the must-attend events is the Cocktail Classes at The Café in downtown Westerly. CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP
This hearty chicken noodle soup is the perfect comfort food that is packed with nutritious goodness. This pairs perfectly with homemade beer bread or a sourdough loaf.
INGREDIENTS:
• 8 cups chicken broth (add more if desired)
• Whole fryer chicken, cut in chunks or shredded
• 5 celery stalks, sliced
• 8 carrots, sliced
• ½ onion diced
• 4 tablespoons butter
• 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• ¼ cup half and half (optional)
• 1 package egg noodles
• Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS:
In a large stock pot, add 8 cups of chicken broth. Dice carrots, celery and onion and add to the broth. Bring to a boil, and reduce to medium heat until the vegetables are soft. In the meantime, skin and cube 1 whole fryer chicken and add to the stock pot. Next, add egg noodles (frozen Reames homemade egg noodles are my favorite) and let boil until noodles are cooked. Add butter, half and half, salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Simmer on low until ready to serve.
