SKETCHING HER WAY To Success

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH PROFESSIONAL ILLUSTRATOR DEANNA FIRST

For over a decade, Deanna First has seamlessly merged the worlds of fashion and art, creating a distinctive career as a professional illustrator.

“I’ve wanted to be an artist since preschool,” Deanna shares. “I even have a drawing I did when I was six of a girl by an easel saying, ‘My job will be an artist.’” That childhood dream, born in Ohio, has blossomed into a thriving career in New York City.

After moving to NYC, Deanna combined her love of fashion and illustration, briefly working in roles at Ralph Lauren and J.Crew but eventually ventured into entrepreneurship as a professional illustrator. Today, her art studio houses that childhood sketch as a reminder of her progress.

Deanna’s ability to bridge fashion and illustration is a testament to her artistic vision. “Fashion is more than clothing—it’s about capturing someone’s true essence on paper,” she explains. She seeks inspiration from global fashion weeks, red carpets, and the aura of her subjects.

Her preferred tools—microns (fine tipped markers) and Copic markers— offer the blendability of watercolors with more precise control, enabling her to create pieces that celebrate motion and femininity. “I’m incorporating more movement into my art, moving away from perfect lines,” she notes of her evolving style.

While her live sketches at galas, think The Met Gala, and high-profile events have garnered acclaim, Deanna’s creative process varies between personal and commissioned work. “Custom commissions involve capturing every detail of the client’s vision, while personal pieces allow for more freedom and therapeutic expression,” she says.

Memorable collaborations include stints as the Artist in Residence at Tiffany & Co. as well as The Plaza Hotel. If you’ve ever enjoyed a glass of bubbles at The Plaza, you’ll recognize her illustrations on the menu at the Champagne Bar.

Deanna has worked with several notable west coast clients as well. “Working with The Beverly Hills Hotel and Hotel Bel-Air on holiday cards last year was a dream,” she beams. She looks forward to more world-wide collaborations in the coming year.

role in connecting her with those iconic brands. “I’m so grateful for the power of social media—it’s connected me to clients throughout the world.”

Despite her fast-paced lifestyle—she once traveled between events in NYC, The Hamptons, and Boston in a single day—Deanna remains dedicated to her craft. “Sketching is a small part of my career,” she shares. “The rest involves marketing, content creation, and managing the business side of things.” But on the days she’s sketching in her studio, she can be found listening to meditative music or nature sounds and enjoying the company of her cat, Willow.

“Sketching is a small part of my career,” she shares. “The rest involves marketing, content creation, and managing the business side of things.”

From fashion campaigns to people-watching, inspiration is everywhere for Deanna, though she remains focused inward. “I do my best work when I tune inward rather than looking outward,” she says.

She has collaborated with incredible brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Hermes, just to name a few and social media has played a pivotal

Her goals for 2025 are ambitious: sketching at the Oscars and Grammys, designing store windows and product packaging on a global scale, and manifesting collaborations with Oscar de la Renta and Chanel. But Deanna prefers to keep her upcoming projects under wraps until they’re finalized; a lesson learned from past experiences. “There’s something special about surprising people with an announcement.”

Celebrate Magical March With These Shamrock Inspired Green Muffins Made With Matcha!

These Matcha Muffins are so much fun for March and any St. Patrick’s Day inspired festivities, but they’re also delicious at any time of the year! Their green pigment comes from matcha and spinach – no food dyes! And the matcha provides that signature earthy flavor that is complemented so well by the sweetness in the bananas, honey and sugar. Whether pairing these muffins with eggs or a yogurt bowl for breakfast or enjoying them as a sweet pairing with coffee or tea, these are sure to become one of your favorite muffins!

ALYSSA LAVY, MS, RD, CDN

• ¾ C whole milk

• 2 tsp vanilla extract

• 3 medium bananas, ripe or overripe

• 1 ½ C spinach, packed

• 3 grams matcha

• 2 large eggs

• Nonstick cooking spray

Yields: 18 muffins

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 ½ C all purpose flour

• ½ C rolled oats

• ¾ C sugar

• 2 Tbsp brown sugar, packed

• 1 Tbsp baking powder

• ¼ tsp salt

• ¼ C honey

• ½ C unsalted butter (1 stick)

• ¾ C plain, unsweetened whole milk Greek yogurt

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Melt butter and set aside so it can cool to room temperature.

3. Add milk, Greek yogurt, vanilla extract, honey, eggs, bananas (broken into thirds or quarters), spinach and oats to blender. Cover and blend until smooth and bright green.

4. In a separate large mixing bowl, add the flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and matcha. Combine with a large spoon or rubber spatula.

5. Pour liquid green mixture into the large bowl with the dry ingredients and mix until well combined. Do not overmix.

6. Line a muffin tin with muffin/cupcake liners and spray with nonstick cooking spray (optional). Fill each muffin liner with batter. The batter should yield 18 muffins, which can be baked in 1 batch using a 12-muffin tin and a 6-muffin tin.

7. Bake in oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Without opening the oven, reduce the heat to 350 degrees Fahrenheit for an additional 25-30 minutes. A toothpick should be inserted and come out clean when done. Let muffins cool before removing from muffin tin and enjoying. Muffins can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days. Enjoy!

EMPOWERING Women THROUGH ENDOMETRIOSIS Awareness

Endometriosis is a chronic, systemic condition affecting 1 in 10 reproductive-age women, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and underdiagnosed health conditions globally. It occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing debilitating symptoms such as chronic fatigue, digestive issues, and pain that interferes with daily activities, relationships, and mental health. Delayed diagnosis, which can take an average of 7-10 years, often prevents women from accessing timely, effective care and exacerbates their symptoms. During Endometriosis Awareness Month, we aim to raise awareness, celebrate advances in treatment, and encourage others to seek the support they deserve.

Living with endometriosis brought years of debilitating pain that touched every aspect of my life—physical, emotional, and relational. As my symptoms worsened, I remained determined to find answers and proper care, ultimately leading me to Dr. Goldstein and her team at Esse Care in Greenwich. Dr. Goldstein specializes in reproductive surgery and wellness, offering a compassionate, holistic approach that prioritizes both medical treatment and overall health. At my first consultation, I finally felt heard, as she validated my experiences and helped me understand

Championing Change This Month

how endometriosis was causing the symptoms I struggled with for so long. The care I received was extraordinary—not just in its technical precision but in the compassion and unwavering support I experienced every step of the way.

Dr. Goldstein’s expertise in minimally invasive gynecological surgery allowed her to perform laparoscopic excision surgery—the gold standard for endometriosis treatment. This approach removes lesions at their root, helping to reduce pain, restore function, and prevent recurrence. This surgery allowed me to regain control of my health, embrace life with renewed energy, and restore hope for the future—including the possibility of starting a family. Through her focus on both endometriosis excision surgery and holistic wellness, I’ve gone from merely surviving to thriving, moving forward with renewed strength, vitality, and a deep commitment to my well-being.

The foundation of wellness lies in recognizing our worth and prioritizing our health. My journey to prioritize my health and advocate for answers was deeply shaped by my mom’s courageous battle with cancer and her passing. Her immense courage and grace while navigating a devastating illness became my call to action. It embodied Ernest Hemingway’s sentiment: ‘Courage is grace under pressure.” Her experience taught me to be proactive about my health, advocate for answers, and find strength in adversity, inspiring me to found The Grace Collective (TGC @_thegracecollective) to honor her legacy.

As Miss Connecticut, I championed TGC’s mission through initiatives aligned with its pillars—Health, Education, Advocacy, and Lifestyle (HEAL). These same principles guided me as I navigated my health journey, competed at Miss America, and transformed my experience into a purpose-driven mission. Today, I feel healthier and stronger than ever. Through TGC and my advocacy, I strive to inspire others to prioritize their health, uplift their communities, and face life’s challenges with resilience and grace. This Endometriosis Awareness Month, let’s come together to prioritize women’s health, raise awareness about endometriosis, and celebrate the strength of those who advocate for answers and healing.

CRAFTING TIMELESS HOMES

Kathryn Hunt Studio Provides Expert Advice for Creating Your Dream Space
ARTICLE BY LUCINDA JAMISON

Finding the perfect balance between style and function when you’re building a home or renovating can be a daunting task.

The key to success lies in making informed decisions with the help of a design professional. A full-service interior decoration and design firm in West Hartford, The Kathryn Hunt Studio works in an array of visual styles to assist clients through the design process and create livable spaces to call home. Interior Designer Kathryn Hunt offers expert advice focused on creating spaces that stand the test of time.

“Hire an interior designer,” she recommends. “It saves time and money. Designers have a wealth of experience—we understand how products are going to wear and how you're going to live in these products.”

She takes time to become acquainted with her client’s wants and needs before beginning a project.

“I'm not one to dive into trends. I like to sit with my clients and understand who they are as individuals. It's so important that they're comfortable in their own home. As a designer, I'm not

dictating what their personal style is going to be—I help them tailor it. The biggest thing that I can tell clients is don't be afraid of going towards what you love. Essentially, we're working together toward creating art within a home space.”

Kathryn starts by working with architectural blueprints to create the right flow and address essential design features intrinsic to the project.

“Generally, I try to make every room happy. Moody can be happy, white can be happy, everything can be happy, it's just a matter of playing with the right textures, colors, and accents.” One of Kathryn’s favorite areas of design is incorporating texture. Her work with patterns and wallcoverings extends to natural fibers, such as grasscloth and linens. “Linen is a wonderful durable, organic, sustainable fabric that we use often. Linens in a thicker textural weave are great for upholstery taking into account pets, taking into account wine spills and life spills. We want to make sure that all these products are going to last.”

Pattern is another feature that is so essential for home design. Kathryn and her design team are experts at pulling together

pattern mixes to balance out a room, taking one bold pattern and layering in smaller-scale motifs like block prints to create the perfect ebb-and-flow energy in a room. ”Block prints are absolutely beautiful in their use of colors and intricate detail. Many are hand-done, which is amazing, and again, create art in your spaces.”

In kitchens and baths, she believes a designer is essential in helping the homeowner with the search for tile and hard finishes that produce the right look and

add warmth and style continuity. She also stresses that it is very important to work with a quality cabinetry company and an experienced designer to ensure that these spaces are the perfect combination of style and functionality.

Each room should tell its unique story while maintaining a cohesive design language. “I want to walk into a space that is a little bit different and evokes a new feeling. They need to all talk to each other and have the same feeling, but when you walk

into each space it's going to have its own unique story and you're going to have a different feeling in each room.”

Creating a timeless home involves a thoughtful blend of personal style, functionality, and trust in experienced professionals. The guidance of an experienced interior designer and the insights the designer offers will provide a roadmap for homeowners to navigate the challenges and embrace the joys of creating a beautifully personalized living space.

Kathryn notes, “every project offers new opportunities to play with things like beautiful wallpaper and different textures and different fabrics and different patterns. I love helping clients create their dream spaces.”

HOUSEPLANTSThe Perfect Roommate

AN INDOOR GARDEN SANCTUARY

The ubiquitous houseplant has long been a cautious curiosity for many. Comments such as “I don’t have a green thumb,” or “I can’t keep anything alive,” have echoed through the rooms and hallways of almost every home in America. Well, it’s time to dispel all the mistruths about whether houseplants are beneficial and to lay the foundation for a little oasis of green happiness in the corner of every home!

By the way, you don’t really need a green thumb as there are plenty of hard-to-kill houseplants that can survive any level of neglect! And remember not only do houseplants look pretty, they also decrease stress and anxiety, increase happiness, and bring a sense of joy and relaxation to every room.

Houseplants make us feel better about ourselves in many ways because they allow us to care for them and we reap the rewards of that love. No one is alone when you have a houseplant, as they are our forever listeners. Yes, some people actually do talk with their houseplants all day long! There are many science-based benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment. Aside from reducing indoor air pollutants and increasing humidity in the

home, house plants have been shown to reduce mental fatigue, accelerate the healing process, as well as improve productivity and focus.

Pothos, spider plants, lady palms, yucca, and succulents are so pretty and easy to grow. It is no wonder that we have seen a revival of indoor gardening trends.  Instagram is teeming with photos of incredible indoor “living green” vignettes that show us all how clever we can be when decorating with house plants! All you

There are many sciencebased benefits to having houseplants in the home and office environment.

really need is to a pick a place in the home that has the best light and pick your plants.

Think outside of the box when it comes to decorating with houseplants. Look for underused spaces. Use mixed and matched pots of different sizes and shapes. Turn a shelf into a plant display. Go vertical with some hanging plants or an antique ladder. You can even group some of your favorite plants together into a single large decorative pot.

Signature large plant displays anchor the most well-designed rooms in America and it’s all there for us to look at, learn from, and bring into our own home. Whether combined into a single large decorative pot or clustered together in a corner, always remember the key to any house plant décor is to have a thriller, a tall plant usually with a strong color and form; filler plants that literally will fill the pot covering all the soil; and a spiller plant that trails over the edge

of the pot. Try any combination of your favorite plants or a tried and true combination of a fiddle-leaf fig, a prayer plant, and a string of pearls.

No matter how you look at it, houseplants improve our lives in many ways. Indoor gardens provide us an alternative way to commune with nature and to reconnect with the living world. We all benefit from the additional life that houseplants bring into our homes. In this crazy world of ours, wouldn’t be it nice to return home to your own personal indoor greenspace. Happy gardening!
