THE BRAVE STORY OF THE FORMER NFL PLAYER TURNED JUDGE
Inspiring the Next Generation with Ed Newman
ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL
INSPIRED BY | LIFE + CULTURE 18
"Life throws curveballs your way - things like cancer, physical injury, and intractable rivals. However, with true grit and determination, you can overcome your obstacles and achieve your goals." - Ed Newman
Determined, resilient, and focused are just three words Holly Newman Greenberg uses to describe her father. A proud member of the Greenwich community, Newman Greenberg is the daughter of four-time allpro NFL guard, Ed Newman. She walks us through the story of her remarkable father, a football star, cancer survivor, and elected judge in South Florida. Through his memoir, WARRIOR JUDGE: One Man’s Journey from Gridiron to Gavel, the story details Newman’s experience of becoming a Super Bowl champion and an All-Pro in the era of Don Shula and a perfect season for the Miami Dolphins.
Newman grew up on Long Island, New York, and attended Duke University. The Dolphins drafted the NFL star in 1973 where he played for 12 seasons. While playing football professionally, he was constantly furthering his education, taking classes in real estate, and eventually law school leading to a successful career post NFL.
Newman Greenberg, co-authored the book alongside her father, with feelings of immense pride, to bring his story to a bigger audience across the country, and here to her new community in Greenwich. For our men's issue, Ed Newman's life sparks inspiration for many. Including athletes, young and old, anyone who might be battling cancer, or for those wearing multiple hats like Newman who attended law school while also in the NFL. Unfortunately, a knee injury ended his career in football in 1985, but that did not stop him
from pursing his dreams as he continued his law career in South Florida. In 1994, he was elected County Court Judge in Miami, Florida where he served for 28 years.
Newman Greenberg shared the many obstacles her father had to overcome over the years, all told throughout his remarkable memoir (we won't spoil it all for you!) The book is recommended for many, whether you're an athlete entering your rookie season, an athlete retiring from the world of sports, or a cancer survivor battling unprecedented challenges. Through Newman's various stories, you can expect to read several anecdotes and insights into Coach Shula and his Dolphins teammates.
WARRIOR JUDGE is a captivating and moving read that will leave you feeling inspired. Throughout the course of his memoir, the prominent message is the battle of overcoming the unexpected in life. Newman's life experiences are just that and how to handle them with strength. Newman officially retired in 2022, after serving for decades alongside his bailiff and former Dolphins teammate, Tony Nathan
Holly lives in Greenwich with her two children, and it has been a dream of hers to share the exhilarating story of her father through print for the whole world to read.
You can get your copy of WARRIOR JUDGE: One Man’s Journey from Gridiron to Gavel on Amazon, Diane's Books of Greenwich, Dogwood Books and Gifts, or Barnes and Noble.

HOW DO YOU SERVE YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY?
When I started working as the General Manager here I spoke to Marc the restaurant’s owner and we agreed that we would give discounts to area First Responders on food and drink. I also have built a great relationship with organizations like the Greenwich Young Professionals Group and Woman Owned Greenwich to host networking events in our bar area where we extend the hours of our discounted Happy Hour menu. I think it is important to give back in these ways.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING IN GREENWICH? I started working in Greenwich while I was living in Westchester County and recently moved to Fairfield. What I love most about Greenwich are the relationships I’ve built with customers. We’ve become friends, they have my cell and I am here to help them celebrate special occasions or just catch up on life. We have regular customers that I see daily and some that travel a long distance on the weekend to visit us for live music bottomless brunch. Beyond the community of interesting people, I love the energy on Greenwich Avenue. It is a diverse place and offers something for everyone - there is always something happening!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE HIDDEN GEM IN TOWN.
Occasionally I am asked by visitors about areas to take photos and I always suggest the pier. It is easy to get to, just down from Greenwich Avenue past the Delamar Hotel. From this area you can see the Long Island Sound and enjoy the fresh breeze. Another gem is all the live music at restaurants in town. Follow @livemusicgreenwich on Instagram to see where you’ll find live music. We regularly have music on the weekends which is a huge hit.

Dutch Baby Recipe
A SURPRISINGLY EASY BREAKFAST DELIGHT!
ARTICLE BY ANNA BARNES
ANNA BARNES • @BLISS_AND_BELLINIS
Anna Barnes of @bliss_and_bellinis loves to create and share; especially when it comes to sharing great recipes with others. A Dutch Baby is wonderfully versatile because changing a few ingredients can make it sweet or savory. Next time, try subbing goat cheese and dill instead of sweet berries and lemon curd!
CULINARY CREATIONS FOOD + BEVERAGE 44
ingredients
• 3 large eggs
• 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup milk
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 2 tablespoons butter
• lemon curd (I'm partial to Bonne Maman)
• fresh berries for garnish
directions
1. Preheat your oven to 400°F and place a 10-inch cast iron skillet into the oven and heat for at least 5 minutes.
2. Combine eggs, flour, milk, salt, sugar, and vanilla. Mix until completely smooth. You can either mix this by hand or combine in a food processor or blender.
3. Open the oven door and drop the butter into the preheated skillet. Close the oven and allow the butter to melt, just about 2 minutes (be careful to not let it burn).
4. Once melted, carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven and pour the batter into the buttered skillet and return to the oven.
5. Bake for about 20 minutes, until puffed and golden.
6. Once fully baked, remove the skillet from the oven and drizzle with lemon curd and top fresh berries.
7. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.
8. Enjoy!

As a community bank, the team tailors its services based on the interactions they have with customers each day. From creating a Pet Saving Account for pet owners to advocating for financial literacy, the team is encouraged by the passions of their customers’.
“People with pets are often very compassionate,” says Gaudio. “They love their animals and feel strongly about them. We want to work with people like that.”

As Loyal Friend
It’s not hard to spot someone passionate about their pet. Whether their dog or cat is the lock screen on their phone or in their social media profile picture, their passion isn’t missed by the Bank.
“We take care of every customer equally, no matter what a customer’s profession is or how big their account is,” says Gaudio. “We enjoy customers who believe in something. Their passion makes me want to work harder and gives me energy to help them do what they’re best at. It’s the synergy that makes us both successful.”
In response, the Bank is launching a new high yield Pet Savings Account. It’s a debit card that can be used by “pet parents” to care for their beloved pets, by saving money for vet appointments or other pet expenses.
The Bank’s customer centric service not only keeps customers feeling cared for, but secure knowing that people they trust are monitoring their accounts for fraud.

“The first thing I did when I joined the team was put together a monthly art event,” says Gaudio. “We’d convert the Bank at night into a local art exhibit with live music. I’d pay for the food, drinks, invitations, and a piece of art from each artist to hang at the branch.”

Community is what shapes The First Bank of Greenwich. Led by President and CEO Frank Gaudio, the Bank is an anchor and partner for communities across Fairfield and Westchester counties, empowering the region’s businesses, nonprofits, and anyone else making their community a better place to live.
WWWhen someone visits the Cos Cob branch, they’re greeted on the floor by Tellers, Assistant Managers, the Manager of Retail Operations, and President and CEO Frank Gaudio himself, who after 13 years leading the Bank still feels most in his element interacting with customers.
At a time when many national banks are closing local branches and cutting costs by replacing human interaction with automated voice systems, Gaudio has found success through understanding and caring that no amount of AI can replicate.
For Community, By Community
“We think of ideas like this to get compassionate people to Bank with us, and we want to support their passion,” explains Gaudio.

The Art of Community
Perhaps the largest answer to the Bank’s success lies in its diverse and growing 450+ person Advisory Board carefully built from trusted community members that includes everyone from musicians to medics, service industry workers to CEOs.

In addition to providing insight on where to get involved to best help the community prosper, the Advisory Board acts as a resource for other customers and community members who can benefit from their expertise. If a customer needs an attorney or tax advisor, it’s likely someone on the Advisory Board can help.
Music is a staple of the Bank’s events. Whether the performers are kids from Project Music—a local nonprofit they support—a jazz singer at an outdoor concert series, or a rock band at a gallery opening, the events bring the community together.

“Customers aren’t just numbers to us, they’re friends and neighbors,” says Gaudio. “When you care about someone, you want to find out what’s going on in their life. I want to know when a customer’s mother passes away or if their child is graduating so that I know to send flowers and cards. I don’t do this because they’re customers, I do it so they know they matter.”
While Gaudio is certainly one-of-a-kind, his interest in community is reflected in the employees surrounding him. Their experience and desire to make a difference in the lives of customers has to equal his.

Perfecting Your Golf Swing
ARTICLE BY DANIEL SCHOWENGERDT
Whether you are a new golfer or have been playing for decades, we all want the same thing—to be a single-digit handicap (or better). In some professions, golfing with clients is a must, and slicing off the tee box can kill the deal.
GET ACTIVE | LIFE + CULTURE 58
Get fit for equipment.
01.
If you are buying clubs off the rack, you aren’t giving yourself the best chance for success. Golf technology is evolving every year, and although you don’t need to buy a new driver each year, if you’ve been playing with the same clubs for 5+ years, it’s time to take advantage of the new equipment. Newer clubs have lower and deeper center of gravity (CG), creating an easier launch off the face. Even off-center strikes can produce a straight shot with the right set of clubs. Any major golf store will fit you for free—just make sure you get the correct length club and size grip. The clubs don’t swing themselves, so don’t neglect instruction and practice, but getting the right equipment is a vital piece of the puzzle.
On drivers and hybrids, some of the newest equipment have premium shaft options off the rack. Generally, a $300 driver has a low-grade $15 shaft that you should change. The shaft is the engine of the club, so getting custom shafts will add distance and forgiveness—guaranteed.
As for the putter, you use it more than any other club in your bag on every round of golf. It should be the most tailored club in your bag.

We’ve all heard someone say, “I should get a lesson sometime.” To be effective, you need regular lessons from a PGA certified pro, not just one lesson. Getting quality instruction from the same instructor can turn slices into draws and give you the confidence to play with anyone on any course. Years ago, golf instructors started instruction with chipping and putting and then graduated to the driver. Now, instructors have been pressured to start with the driver because we all want to outdrive our friends. Resist that temptation! Get instruction on your short game and irons first. My friend regularly outdrives me by 50 yards, but my ball is in the hole first most of the time because of my training and practice on the short game.
03.
Read quality golf books for a higher golf IQ.
There are thousands of golf books, but don’t worry, you only need to read a handful of them to up your golf IQ. Here are some top reads:
Short game: Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible by Dave Pelz
Mental game: Golf is Not a Game of Perfect by Bob Rotella
Mechanics: Practical Golf by John Jacobs
Ball flight laws: The Practice Manual by Adam Young (only read the first 50 pages)
04.
Practice your short game every day.
You don’t even have to spend time away from your family while practicing if you don’t have a golf simulator. You can practice putting and chipping on the carpet while watching TV with your family.
Chipping and the bump and run: The only mechanical advice I will give is the most important lesson you can learn in the short game. When you miss your approach shot you must be able to chip the ball within 8 feet of the hole for a one putt. Try this shot from Dave Peltz’s short game book. It gets me up and down from 25 yards out to just off the green.

Position the ball in the back of your stance, just inside your back ankle. This will help avoid hitting it thin. That ball position will also help you hit the ball with a descending blow, and as Dave Pelz says, “hit the little ball (golf ball) before the big ball (the earth).”
Turn your feet 30 degrees toward the target and have 70% of your weight on your front foot which also promotes the descending blow.
Use a putting stroke to hit the ball. That’s right—do not use your hands or wrists for power. Using a putting stroke just off the green will create consistency and clean contact.
Don’t take the club back very far (depending on the length of the shot) and make sure your follow-through is 20% further than your backswing. This will ensure accelerating through the ball.
Use the right club. I use anything from a 9 iron to 60-degree wedge for this shot. Use a 9 iron or wedge when you need the ball to roll further once it hits the green, and use a more lofted club for less roll. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
