Dear Greenwich Community, Ah, February – a month that often leaves us torn between the allure of Valentine's Day festivities and the desire for more understated celebrations. As we navigate this delicate balance, our charming town of Greenwich offers a unique backdrop to express love in various ways. In the heart of winter transitioning into the promises of spring, let's take a moment to come together within our community. From the familiar faces on our streets to the cozy corners of our neighborhoods, there's a special magic that binds us. “Love local” encompasses not only supporting our beloved Greenwich businesses but also cherishing the treasures close to home. So, grab a coffee at one of our local gems like Aux Delices, Raphaels or CFCF and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or treat yourself to a bottle of wine from Vals, paired with artisanal cheese from Greenwich Cheese Shop, for a delightful movie night in. Remember to scan the barcode in the front of the magazine and vote for all of your favorite local spots this month for our annual local love awards. Our town thrives on the collective strength of shared stories and connections. In February, we celebrate the spirit of togetherness that makes Greenwich a haven to call home. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of the rich tapestry of life in Greenwich. Our hope is that we inspire you to cherish it just a bit more than you did before. Happy February!

“
“I’m riding out that feeling and can’t put the paintbrush down!”
If you’ve strolled down Greenwich Ave and into Maman, you may have noticed your morning latte served in a beautifully designed, exclusive Greenwich cup. The coffee cup depicts some iconic Greenwich landmarks and was designed by another icon of the Greenwich community, artist Kate Foley. When Maman, a beloved NYC based café, opened last summer on Greenwich Avenue, a friend encouraged Kate to submit her art for a competition to design a custom cup the café would produce for their new location. The ask from Maman was general; for “any art” but Kate knew she wanted to include special places from around town. CONTINUED >

“I started to think about all the things I love about Greenwich—Tod’s Point, the Greenwich clock, the train station, polo fields, Island Beach ferry, the Bush Holly House, the top of the avenue, time spent out on the water, or walking my brother’s dog, Bodhi, around all those places. I even included those annoying parking meters that I always forget to pay!” She began to sketch and watercolor in the Maman blue and white colorway to pay homage to their interior décor and dishes and once finished, submitted her work. Several weeks later, she received an email informing her that her art had been selected for the custom cup. “When the cup was finally in store, I was so excited and moved by all my friends (and even strangers) sharing and tagging me in their coffee photos. That was a total WOW moment!”
Kate Foley
Kate Foley is a fashion and jewelry designer by day; a painter and illustrator by night; inspired and influenced by the delight and wonder of fashion, art, architecture, world travel and everything in between. Kate can usually be found with a paint brush in hand at the beach or burning the midnight oil doodling before bed. Her art is inspired by weekend getaways, happy hours with friends, endless summers, objects she adores, and some that she so wishes she could afford! All those big and little things.. because no detail should be overlooked, and there is so much to enjoy!

“When the cup was finally in store, I was so excited and moved by all my friends (and even strangers) sharing and tagging me in their coffee photos. That was a total WOW moment!”
Kate is a Greenwich native who’s always enjoyed art and creating it. After years of painting cards or gifts for family and friends, she hosted her first official art show last year with two best friends at Half Full Brewery. Kate’s art is a direct reflection of the artist herself; effortlessly cool and a bright presence. Think a Veuve Clicquot bottle brimming with hydrangeas, a directional ‘Happy Hour’ sign, flowers surrounding a construction site, summer scenes and so much more. When several pieces of her art sold almost immediately and she received numerous requests for commissions, she “officially felt like a true artist!” For Kate, the Maman x Kate Foley cup was “the cherry on top of 2023!” But she’s not stopping there. The momentum and inspiration from a successful year is now fueling her creativity in the new year, “I’m riding out that feeling and can’t put the paintbrush down!” If you’d like to see more of Kate’s beautiful art, you can follow her at @artportfoleyio or visit her website at KateLFoley.com.

REVIEW: Greenwich + DELANCEY ARTICLE BY KELLIE KERWIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID TEYF/GREENWICH & DELANCEY
One of the things I personally love doing is being up to date on the Greenwich food scene, so you can imagine it was quite the shock to learn about an old-fashioned, kosher and classic Jewish restaurant with a modern twist in the Cos Cob section of town. Tucked behind Sandra's Cleaners on the Post Road, is an absolute hidden gem called Greenwich & Delancey owned and operated by Executive Chef David Teyf who also runs other establishments based in NYC, such as Madison & Park Events, LOX

by David Teyf at the Museum of Jewish Heritage and Greenwich & Delancey at 50 West Street. When I set out to meet David for lunch recently, I was once again pleasantly surprised to find a full-service establishment that not only offered sit-down options and a full bar, but catering, curbside pickup, private dining, event capabilities and more. Opening the CT location during the pandemic, everything David and his team have done since then has been strictly word of mouth followed by a strong following from the neighboring Westchester County crowd, as well as loyal patrons from our community. But it still felt like more people needed to know about David's talents, which is why I am here to help spread the good word of great Jewish, kosher food in town. My personal goal is to get more people talking about Greenwich & Delancey and what it offers, because excellent food should be celebrated. I remember hearing about an "unbelievable pastrami sandwich" that was available locally and a family friend talking about the "best bone broth she's ever had" from the same place. All thanks to a co-worker recently introducing me to David, I was finally able to experience this little slice of heaven located not even five minutes from my home. Before I headed out for my lunch meeting with David, I made sure to do my research and make good on my promise to come hungry. Boy, am I happy I did, because it allowed me to sample a number of absolutely mouthwatering dishes as David told me about his history, background and passion for delivering a high-quality, elevated experience using only the freshest ingredients (no fryers allowed here). The signature pastrami served table side was unveiled from under a smoke-filled glass dome, carved and cooked to perfection with a side of mustard and other classic condiments. We also started with homemade pickles, a personal favorite of mine, and several dishes including a series of small bites like Chicken CONTINUED >

Blintzes, Franks in a Blanket, Shitake Mushroom Deviled Eggs, G&D Smoked Pastrami Mini Donuts (WOW) and a cup of G&D Immune Boost Soup. The taste of everything I tried was exquisite, much like a burst of unbelievable flavors with every bite - even the most simple dishes had a touch of elegance to them. And I have a special place in my heart for a good ole bologna sandwich, so I am already planning to try the Going Back to Camp the next time I stop in as it's served with grilled beef bologna, which is reminiscent of my grandmother's house on Sunday mornings. Greenwich & Delancey not only lived up to my expectations, it exceeded them, which is why I want to see David and his team continue to flourish here. It's also nice to know that there's another neighborhood restaurant my children would enjoy where my husband and I could also have a delicious meal - with a cocktail or two. David was extremely accommodating and even packed up several items for me to take home, including a glass container of his famous Matzo Ball Soup. I would also be remiss not to mention that beyond the food, service and atmosphere at Greenwich & Delancey, is a man whose life mission is to serve. David has been supporting and feeding Holocaust survivors in the NY and CT-areas since the pandemic. And for many of the Jewish holidays, David tries to prepare something extra celebratory to send to the survivors. For example, during Rosh Hashanah, he delivered packages with a special meal, along with apples, honey and round challah. David has big plans and some exciting renovations planned for the Cos Cob location. He also continually changes the menu each season and has a number of health-conscious items available from salads to healthy sides. If you're in the area (59 E Putnam Avenue) and in the mood for your favorite Eastern European and classic Jewish Deli favorites with a modern twist - make sure to stop in and hang out for a bit. Greenwich & Delancey is open Monday through Thursday, as well as Sunday but closed Friday and Saturday for the Jewish Sabbath. For more information, visit http://www.greenwichanddelancey.com or follow along @greenwichdelanceydelicatessen. Reservations are accepted.

SELF-C A R E SE ASON What Wellness Looks Like This Year
It’s self-care season: How can we prevent the winter blues? My prescription for warding off wintertime sadness is to (a) take a daily vitamin D supplement and (b) book a beach vacation. If you’re already subscribing to the standard regimens of eating healthy, getting enough sleep, exercising and spending quality time with people you love, you are well on your way to preventing feelings of sadness, low mood and low energy. However, we all know that winter can drag on, negatively impacting our mental and emotional states, so it is crucial we find ways to enjoy the season instead of wishing it away. After all, complaining about the cold doesn’t make it any warmer outside. Last February, I took a trip to Mexico with my husband and another couple.
The resort we stayed at was divine, the weather couldn’t have been more perfect and I swore to myself I would continue the tradition of a luxury getaway each winter in order to reap the feel-good effects that seemed to linger for weeks after. And it got me thinking about how I am going to fend off the winter blues this year. It wasn’t just the five days of Cancun bliss that perhaps both cured and prevented the winter blues. It was the several weeks of anticipation leading up to the trip, followed by the week-long (or more) high that followed afterward. So, how can we freshen up our self-care routines this year? Through researching the upcoming wellness trends, I bring to you the self-care fads you will be seeing, and loving, this year. CONTINUED >

DIGITAL DETOX
According to SHAPE magazine, we are going to see a surge in digital detoxes. While I have been wanting to take the plunge in this area, I haven't yet. I can already see, and feel, the immediate effects that reducing screen time has, one of my favorite results being an increase in energy. In an online SHAPE article published on December 14, 2023, the writers stated research from 2022 found that “cell phone usage was associated with negative effects on both physical and mental health, particularly in young people.” Reducing screen time (especially on our phones) will leave us feeling much better in body and mind.
Other self-care trends predicted this year include a surge in skincare and bodycare, slow travel, even more mocktails and, wait for it, badminton. That’s right. What was once an uncool sports game in your sixth grade gym class is now popular.
Also from SHAPE magazine, “knockout workouts” are projected to go more mainstream in 2024. What on earth is a knockout workout? According to SHAPE, these exercise routines include combat sports like karate, kickboxing and jiu-jitsu, “which not only provide an excellent cardio challenge but could also help clear your head.” A study from 2020 even concluded that martial arts training could help reduce adverse mental health symptoms.
BIG TALK
“Big Talk” is more than just talking about your feelings. It refers to “deepening connections through meaningful conversation,” according to SHAPE. So, think more availability in your communities centering around deeper, more meaningful conversations instead of fluffy, surface (and frankly, boring) talk. Because going straight into deep convo doesn’t exactly sound fun either, SHAPE thinks we may see a rise in products like conversation starter games and apps where questions are designed to help you and your partner or friends or even acquaintances share more meaningfully about your dreams, passions and values.

KNOCKOUT WORKOUTS
Editors are touting badminton as “tennis’s cuter, more accessible cousin,” seeing as it is “an accessible, low-impact, highly social game,” while wellness experts are seeing a rise in at-home aesthetics treatments for all skin—on your face and everything below your neck—as part of the bodycare movement. Strawberry-Guava Cake
Lady Wong Brings Cakes & Pastries to Your Doorstep ARTICLE BY JENNIFER CARMICHAEL
The unique and buzzed-about cakes and pastries of Lady Wong have even the hardest to please New Yorkers going gaga over the new pastry and dessert shop. A pandemic project from husband-and-wife team, and Greenwich residents, Mogan Anthony and Seleste Tan quickly escalated into one of New York City's most talked about bakeries since opening its doors in 2022. Nestled in the East Village, Lady Wong rose to dessert royalty in just one year, with countless accolades, including what Eater New York called one of "the hottest bakeries in NYC right now."

S T R AW B E R R YG UAVA C A K E "When the restaurants where we worked closed their doors, we longed for a happier time and the pastries of our childhood," says Tan. "So we decided to create our own to bring customers joy and a world of new flavors." Anthony, originally from northern Malaysia, and Tan, who hails from Southern Malaysia, met at the Four Seasons Singapore, where Anthony worked front-of-house and Tan as a pastry chef. Little did they know that their meeting and many years of honing their skills in five-star hotels, resorts, and Michelin-starred restaurants, such as Jean Georges and Wylie Dufresne's WD-50, would culminate in running their pastry shop. "Our shared experience in cooking, eating, and researching around the world have come together in the creation of Lady Wong," notes Anthony, who is no stranger to the Connecticut and Westchester dining scene, having served as culinary director of Village Social Restaurant Group with restaurants in Rye, Pleasantville, and Mount Kisco, NY and New Canaan, CT for nearly 12 years. "What started as the introduction of the nostalgic flavors of our childhood has grown into an almost new genre of pastries that celebrate Southeast Asian flavors but for a modernized palate." Now, the couple has the ears and eyes of customers in their hometown, all eager to have these beautiful, almost museum-worthy cakes. Delivery to the area has begun, in addition to their recently launched nationwide shipping. Tan continued, "This next step in sharing our offerings with Connecticut and Westchester was a natural progression. With our warm welcome in New

York City, we are excited to continue to share these unique flavors - a celebration of East and West - in the area we call home." Lady Wong has expanded its offerings to give Fairfield County and Westchester foodies something they've been missing — a special occasion cake or pastry at the center of their table and conversation. The pastry shop transcends the ordinary; its Black Sesame Passion Fruit Entremet, hiding a bright, fruity center beneath a dark, crackly, nutty dome, was included as The New York Times' "One of the Top 25 Restaurant Dishes We Couldn't Stop Thinking About'' in 2022. Unique flavors like pandan, passion fruit, sour plum, ube, calamansi, and durian keep customers wanting to try more, while colorful shades of lilac, mint green, or poppy red serve as iconic styles of the shop.
Anthony and Tan recommend StrawberryGuava Entremet for the love-themed month with its fruity fragrance, soothing flavors, and gentle textures. It's incredibly light and refreshing, serenely highlighting the rich and fruity tones of natural guava and strawberries that refresh the palate along with velvet cream cheese mousse. Other popular offerings include Pandan Pistachio Royaltine Cake, the tangy Calamansi & Passionfruit Cake, the unique Matcha Mille Crepe, and the decadent Peanut Butter Cake. Additionally, platters featuring a mixture of Lady Wong's traditional and modernized treats, are available for online ordering. For more information and to place orders, customers can visit ladywong.com.
